I have always liked the work of Donald McGill and I also like the post office red post boxes, so when I saw this design it was a no brainer. This ‘particular’ postcard was posted in 1915.

A nice political themed postcard from America. President John F. Kennedy is a very collectible President, almost certainly because of the circumstances around his death, which of course was by assassination. He features on many postcards, both prior to his death and after. This one here is a modern issue from the prolific postcard publisher Classico San Francisco.

ALEXEI ARKHIPOVICH LEONOV….. RIP
30TH May 1934 – 11TH October 2019
Soviet/Russian Cosmonaut and Air Force Major. In 1965 Leonov became the first man to conduct a spacewalk after leaving the capsule during the Voskhod 2 space mission. Leonov was outside the space craft for 12 minutes and 9 seconds. Leonov was awarded the ‘Hero of the Soviet Union’ distinction, twice. In 1975 (July) there was a docking between the American Apollo capsule and the Russian Soyuz capsule which lasted for two days. The Russian Soyuz capsule was commanded by Leonov. Leonov went on to be an accomplished artist. Leonov was a true hero of the Russian space program.

There will be no posting tomorrow, Friday 11th, because I am travelling to Canterbury for the day with an overnight stay for our attendance at Saturday’s Canterbury Postcard/Collector’s Fair. Depending how tired I am when I get back Saturday, especially as I have another Fair at Billericay on Sunday, there may or may not be any posts Saturday or Sunday (I I suspect I will get in at least one post over the weekend, fingers crossed).
Posts will continue on our ‘facebook’ site, of course.

I have a collection of ‘Smurf’ postcards, but this is the only one which depicts smurfs like this! It is an interesting idea to use the Hulk and Smurfs to illustrate racism, and it does make for a ‘really’ strange postcard.

Official Walt Disney Item Produced for the food company:
NESTLE

ELK GROVE, IL
MADE IN USA
I bought this one at a recent postcard fair, so I do not know its exact source, but it is similar in style and design to a set of ‘Monsters Inc’ 3D postcards which were attached to cereal boxes. Therefore, it is possible, if not even probable that this Tarzan card was given away with a Nestle cereal.
Staying on theme, sort of, and it is the reason why I have chosen to depict this card tonight, I have just finished reading the original book ‘Tarzan of the Apes’, written by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912. Considering I am such a fan of the Tarzan films and television series it is a bit of a surprise that I have never considered reading the original source material, but I came across a copy in a charity shop recently and thought, why not? To my surprise, I loved it, it’s a great read. I enjoyed it so much I immediately went on eBay and bought the second book in the series (The Return of Tarzan – 1913).

Official Whitehall Department Recruiting Poster order return Post Card
A simple mint official post card form from 1915, so, for use during World War 1. I like the unusual and when I saw this, I thought it would be an interesting addition to my collection. I like the history behind this card, despite it being unused. This card may well have been designed to be used to order army recruiting posters, to put more soldiers through the front line in the Great War. Used cards would have been filed with the Whitehall department and thus would be unavailable, so mint copies like this may be the only copies collectors like me can access. Worth a thought.

During my time at work I had a number of friends on the police dog unit. For around 12 years I worked at a station where a dog unit was stationed so I got to work with both types of police dog, the Alsatian tracking dogs and the spaniel drug dogs. When I saw this card, it did make me laugh as we often used to say that the drug dogs seemed a little over excited and mad! They aren’t, their just dogs, and dogs yap and run around when they have been in the back of a police van for a while, but I do understand where the comedy element comes from here.

Now, let me start straight off by saying that I don’t think AIDS was anything worth making light of, which it may seem this card design does. AIDS in the US came to the attention of the public from 1981, but had been around much longer, but it was the publicity around the horrors of the then affects of AIDS which caused such consternation and worry, which thus lead to this design, which is quite subtle compared to some early ones I have seen.
Going back to the card design itself I should let you know that these were individually produced by way of a ‘Lino Cut’ process, i.e. a cut block of some sort which is inked and then pressed onto the card, more than one block when mixed colours are used as with this design.

Yes, another Rick Geary design, but I do like them. On a, ‘completely’ separate note, it always amuses me that there are real places in America called Springfield. Actually, as it happens, it seems to be a very common name, so maybe that’s why the creator of the Simpsons animated series picked that name for their home-town!

One of the many romance themed early French postcards I picked up from a French antique postcard/stamp shop in Saintes early last year. This one has a nice drawn historic scene at the bottom with the traditional flowers, required for all ‘romantic’ postcard designs, and the love torn male with his love letter in hand. This one is circa WW1 period.

I bought this unusual postcard, and the further two below, whilst in San Francisco last year (and very nearly a full year ago, give or take a couple of weeks). I bought these at a bookshop in the dockside area close to where you can catch ferries across to other parts of the area across the water. I love unusual postcard designs, and these ‘definitely’ fit that bill.

If you ever visit Berlin then you will struggle to avoid Checkpoint Charlie related items and souvenirs during your visit, especially postcards depicting both how Checkpoint Charlie looked then, but also how it looks today (which is extremely touristy, although the museum near the site of where Checkpoint Charlie was is a real gem of a museum which I highly recommend). This photograph here appears on several postcards either alone, like here, or on a multi-view postcard with other images. It is a bit of history, but a bit which affected many people who are still alive today.

On my first visit to Berlin this year I had the opportunity (having paid for my entry) to climb the many, many steps up to the walkway around the base of the dome on top of this well-known Berlin attraction and tourist landmark. I therefore got to stand at the very point that this photograph was taken. As I result, I could not resist picking up this souvenir postcard.

The postcard also has a New Zealand postage stamp applied – 40c Kete (basket) – which has been cancelled with an AUCKLAND N. Z. cancellation date stamp dated 3rd July 1996.
Try and imagine, difficult for some of a certain young age I know, a time before mobile telephones were in the hands of everyone. Back then telephone cards were very common, and most people carried one for use in all the numerus telephone boxes located everywhere (most are now used for other things – I have seen defibrillators in a number recently). Here on this postcard you have an attached telephone card which has the same front image as the postcard it is attached to. I bought these cards back in 1996 and they were not cheap, but they are unusual, and I love unusual postcard combinations.
Depicted below are the other cards from this cat set.
