GERMAN UNDERGROUND HOSPITAL

GUERNSEY

I have never been to Guernsey, but I have visited a very similar establishment on the neighbouring island of Jersey. I still have the postcards from my visit there. So, when I saw these ones for Guernsey I bought them, they also fit nicely with my military history collection.

This first one is titled:

A CORRIDOR OF THE GERMAN UNDERGROUND H, GUERNSEY

This photograph does show the awful conditions that the POW slave labour had to work in

PLAN OF A SECTION OF GERMAN UNDERGROUND HOSPITAL. GUERNSEY

I have a similar postcard for the hospital on Jersey

HAD A WONDERFUL TRIP TO

RAMSGATE

CHEERIO!

Published by

H. B. Ltd

Ref: M10

I think the location of RAMSGATE has been added to this postcard after it was printed, or by request to the publisher so that the card could be sold in that area. What I mean is, that I suspect this is a basic design which could be used in multiple locations around the country, or county and I would not be surprised to find copies of this exact design but with different locations printed in the large yellow triangle, but of course I might be wrong, which means I will definitely be looking for another card with such a location with the intention of proving my theory.

VALENTINE’S

I have no connections with Manchester at all, in-fact I have never even been there. But, I have a fascination with black and white topographical postcards from the 1950’s and 1960’s as this was a leaner period for good quality postcards like this, and as a result some can be quite expensive, although not so much with this one here, but, it still probably contains some nice modern local history.

SIX WONDERS OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT

“THE BAY SERIES”

Copyright

DEAN, SANDOWN, I.W

The ‘Six Wonders of the Isle of Wight’ is a concept that has appeared on postcard, and other items as well, for many years, and even to this day. The idea is based on the meaning of six of the place names on the island:

NEEDLES - you cannot thread

COWES - you cannot milk

RYDE - where you walk

LAKE – without water

NEWPORT – you cannot bottle

FRESHWATER – you cannot drink

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This postcard was posted from Sandown on the Isle of Wight on 3rd May 1948 with the 2d orange King George VI definitive being cancelled with a wavy-line machine postmark. The Bay Series logo, top centre, is shaped like the isle of Wight and it is a well-known logo.

THE CUMBRIA COLLECTION

EARLY TRANSPORT SERIES No 1

WHITEHAVEN TO SILLOTH BUS (c1920)

From the Local Studies Collection of Cumbria County Library

This is the type of postcard which would, really, only appeal to two types of collectors. Those with an interest in Transport, especially buses, and those with a local history interest in Cumbria or more likely the smaller areas of Whitehaven and, or Silloth.

PERSONALITY PHOTO PRESS, LTD

These four postcards came with a bundle of old cards I received some years back because the owner no longer wanted them and the cards were going to be thrown away.

Unfortunately, there is no printed information on these postcards, so it is fortunate that someone has written in pencil the following; ‘Ko Ko, The Mikado’ on the reverse side of the right-hand card. Fortunately, I am aware of the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera of this name, The Mikado. The character Ko Ko is the Lord High Executioner in this opera.

This means that the first postcard is the three characters who sing the following song (although here they do look like males playing the parts):

Three little maids from school are we

Pert as a school-girl well can be

Filled to the brim with girlish glee

Three little maids from school

Everything is a source of fun

Nobody's safe, for we care for none

Life is a joke that's just begun

Three little maids from school

Three little maids who, all unwary

Come from a ladies' seminary

Freed from its genius tutelary

Three little maids from school

Three little maids from school

One little maid is a bride, Yum-Yum

Two little maids in attendance come

Three little maids is the total sum

Three little maids from school

Three little maids from school

From three little maids take one away

Two little maids remain, and they

Won't have to wait very long, they say

Three little maids from school

Three little maids from school

Three little maids who, all unwary

Come from a ladies' seminary

Freed from its genius tutelary

Three little maids from school

Three little maids from school

This second pair of postcards have been produced from the same source but appear to be from a completely different production. This time one of them has the following written on the reverse side:

‘Coquenard, “Veronique”’. The male character that appears on both of these postcards is, I therefore assume, ‘Evariste Coquenard’, Captain in the National Guard and florist in another comic opera (opera comique or operetta) called ‘Veronique’. This one was written, or more properly, composed by Andre Messager.

I do wonder how old these postcard are, they are probably pre-WWII, and possibly much older.

GIBRALTAR

15 CENTIMOS

POSTAL STATIONERY POST CARD

Originally Gibraltar issued postal stationery post cards with the stamp vale shown as ‘HALFPENNY’ in 1886. Later they overprinted these English values with Spanish valued black print. Then in 1889 they issued postal stationery post cards with the stamp having Spanish values as part of the stamp design. These Spanish values appeared along the bottom of the printed stamp. This card here is one of these Spanish currency cards.

This is a 15 Centimos brown (Ref: No 17 in the Higgins & Gage catalogue).

These overprints come with either a flat-topped number 1 or a slanted top to the number 1, this example here has the slanted top version. This is the REPLY half of a two postcard reply set. You can just about see the perforated top where this half has been removed from the other part.

DISNEY’

BOARD WALK

Walt Disney World, Florida

Experience the whimsy and elegance of Disney’s Board Walk Inn – featuring fantastic pools, unique dining and exciting nightlife at Walt Disney World Resort”

(Text from reverse side of Postcard)

If you ever visit Walt Disney World then you will find that besides the four main theme parks there is also a varies number of other locations which can be visited for fine dining or drinks. The Board Walk is an area close to the Epcot theme park which is worth a look as there is a nice restaurant and a great ice cream shop as well. This postcard can only be bought in the main Disney shop at the Board Walk and is one often missed by collectors.

BEER MAT

“ABRACADABAR”

If you do visit here I can really recommend having a drink in the ‘Abracadabar’, which is a smashing themed bar which looks nice and old and which is ‘Magic’ themed (thus the name). Try the one where they melt blue coloured candy-floss into the glass – very sweet, but delightful.

“I DON’T KNOW HOW WE SHALL PASS THE TIME HERE, MISS JONES, WITH NO TELEVISION!”

“COMIC SERIES”

This is a great ‘Fitzpatrick’ cartoon image and one that I bought because of the mention of ‘Television’. This ‘particular’ copy here was posted in August 1959 from Penzance, so I like to think this was acquired at the seaside, making this a true ‘saucy seaside comic’.

PENNY ARCADE CARDS

WESTERNS

(Part 3)

It has been some time, I think it was back in November last year, since I last pictured some of these American plain backed arcade cards. If I remember correctly the last lot were the ‘Playing Card’ type western cards.

Here are some more, and with quite a few of these you can see my ‘television’ interest coming through. In-fact, some of these are superb and appear to be in some sort of series, one which looks like it was an extremely large one.

FAR LEFT

WESTERN 215

John Bromfield in U.S. Marshal

John Broomfield was on television during the 1950’s. In 1956, he appeared as law enforcement officer Frank Morgan in the series ‘Sheriff of Cochise’ and later in its spinoff series ‘U.S. Marshal’ (for which this card was issued)

NEAR LEFT

WESTERN 18

Will Hutchins as Sugarfoot

Without any information around these card items I do not know if this is from the same series as the first card. I wondered if the earlier cards came in this format but later cards in a different format, i.e. with the strip across the bottom with the text in it.

Will Hutchins played the character of Tom Brewster in the television western series ‘Sugarfoot’, which ran between 1957 and 1961 (on the American ABC network). The character was a young lawyer from the Oklahoma Territory.

FAR LEFT

WESTERN 311

Nick Adams in “The Rebel”

The numbering system here has shot up into the 300’s. which indicates how many different versions of these simple cards were produced. Some of the collectors of these cards have massive collections and any search on eBay will produce hundreds of different cards that are on sale.

Nick Adams was both a film and television actor. He appeared in several Hollywood films during the 1950’s and the 1960’s but, although not depicted in costume here, this card mentions his starring role in the ABC television series ‘The Rebel’, from 1959.

Sadly, he passed away on 7th February 1968 from a prescription drug overdose.

                                                                                             NEAR LEFT

WESTERN 305

Michael Ansara in “Tales of the Plainsman”

Michael George Ansara (15th April 1922 – 31st July 2013) had an amazingly mixed and interesting television appearance history. He was a Syrian-born American stage, screen, television and voice-over actor who worked for many years and whose face should be well known to many from the 1960’s through to the 1980’s and beyond.

Amongst his more memorable appearances are Cochise in the series ‘Broken Arrow’, Kane in the sci-fi series ‘Buck Rogers in the 25th Century’, Commander Kang in three different Star Trek series and, as depicted here, U.S. Marshal Sam Buckhart in the NBC series ‘Law of the Plainsman’, also known in some areas as ‘Tales of the Plainsman’.

FAR LEFT

WESTERN 315

Michael Landon in “Bonanza”

Bonanza was a long running, and extremely popular television western series which ran for 14 seasons between 1959 and 1973. Landon played one of the main family characters, Joe (full character name Joseph ‘Little Joe’ Cartwright)

NEAR LEFT

WESTERN 309

John Smith in “Laramie”

John Smith (6th March 1931 – 25th January 1995) played a range of western themed characters on television, including that of Sheriff Mort Cory in the series ‘Laramie’ (the series ran between 1959 and 1963).

FAR LEFT

CHRIS JONES

Christopher (‘Chris’) Jones (real name William Frank Jones – 1st August 1941 – 31st January 2014) was an American stage, movie and television actor. He appeared in an ABC television series called ‘The Legend of Jessie James’ in the 1965 – 1966 season and I believe this image here is taken from that television series.

NEAR LEFT

CHUCK CONNORS

Chuck Conners (real name ‘Kevin Joseph Aloysius ‘Chuck’ Connors’ – 10th April 1921 – 10th November 1992) was not just an American actor as prior to this he was a professional basketball and baseball player and was one of only 12 athletes in the history of American professional sports to have played in both ‘Major League Baseball’ and in the ‘National Basketball Association’. From this he went on to have a 40-year film and television career.

Although again not stated I believe this image is taken from the television series ‘The Rifleman’ which starred Connors as the main character Lucas McCain. This was an ABC series and it ran from 1958 until 1963. The series was set in the 1870’s and 1880’s and was one of the first prime time series on American television to show a widowed parent raising a child.

FAR LEFT

LEE MAJORS

Lee Majors is perhaps far better known in the UK as being the ‘Six Million Dollar man’, and, also, perhaps for his other popular series ‘The Fall Guy’. But here he is depicted in a western costume and although the programme is not given I believe this is taken from the television series ‘The Big Valley’ in which he played the character Heath Barkley. The series ran from 1965 to 1969.

For a television theme collector, this is a cracking card to obtain as it is an early card for an actor who I watched as a kid in later iconic programmes.

NEAR LEFT

JAMES DRURY

I don’t even have to wonder about this one because as a child I was a huge fan of the western series ‘The Virginian’ which was the rare example of an American western series which also became popular in the UK. The series starred James Drury and Doug McClure and in America it originally aired on the NBC network between 1962 and 1971 with a total of 249 episodes. It was America’s third longest running western (the above mentioned ‘Bonanza’ was second (430 episodes) – and, if you are interested, ‘Gunsmoke’ is the longest, at 635 episodes). The series was filmed in colour and it was the first western series, I believe the first American series programme full stop, to run to 90 minutes an episode (which worked out as a 75 - minute episode in the UK as here it was shown without advert breaks, which added 15 minutes).

So, for me this is another fantastic television related card. In the future I will again be trying to buy a few more of these unusual arcade machine cards for my collection, especially if I can find TV related ones, as I have become a bit of a fan of these items.

HOVERCRAFT

RHYL to WALLASEY

CARRYING CAPACITY 24 PASSENGERS

CRUISING SPEED 60 MPH

Published by

BAMFORTH & Co., LTD

HOLMFIRTH, Yorkshire

Hovercraft postcards have always been extremely popular and they have a very dedicated band of collectors. This is a nice early one published by the well-known postcard publisher ‘Bamforth & Co’, best known perhaps for their saucy seaside postcard cartoons.

Unfortunately, the depicted hovercraft is not named on either the front or the reverse side of this card. But, the internet is an amazing thing and through this, and a check on ‘British United Airways’, which I can see is written on the side of this hovercraft, I have found out that this is a VA.3. It apparently ran on a service between Rhyl, north Wales and Wallasea, information that is recorded on this card. What it does not say is that this was the first ever passenger hovercraft route. The service was scheduled to run for an experimental two-month period. Although the service, 12 trips a day, was popular with the public the service suffered from the hovercraft having unreliable engines, as well as issues with running in bad weather, due to the lack of skirt the craft required good clam weather to operate. Because of these factors the service only ran for 36 of what was to be a 59 - day period. The service ended on the 17th September 1962 after the craft broke free from her moorings during extreme weather and ended up being towed to shore by the Rhyl lifeboat, but, unfortunately, she suffered some extreme damage, preventing her from continuing as a passenger hovercraft.

Later the craft was used in ‘Hovershows’ making public appearances. Then the British Government used the craft in marine mine tests in the belief that a hovercraft type vehicle would suffer less damage than a more traditional craft in a mine strike. I am not sure that it did though as history states that the craft was blown apart and bits of it were scattered across the Solent sea floor. A sad and undistinguished end to what was a craft with a short but interesting history.

This cost me £6, but I think it was worth every penny.

PRIMEVAL

SATURDAYS 9PM – AUGUST 9

BBC AMERICA

COMIC-CON 2008

BBC AMERICA booth #3629

FRIDAY, JULY 25

PRIMEVAL PANEL, ROOM 6A

This is an American Comic-Con advertising free postcard issued out to promote the ‘Primeval’ programme panel at the event. These Comic-Con BBC America cards are a little bit bigger than the normal postcard size but are proper postcards. They are quite collectible and can cost anywhere around the £5 to £7 mark, each. I bought this one on eBay because I was a fan of the original couple of series of this television programme, the ones this card advertises.

The series was a science-fiction one which followed a team of scientists tasked with investigating temporal anomalies which appeared across the UK and through which passed dinosaurs and other extinct and old animals and creatures. As the series grew a species of monster from the future started to appear as well.

First shown here in the UK on the 10th February 2007 its popularity grew and it became popular worldwide, including America, thus this postcard. My favourite programmes came from the first two series’, and these were the most popular with everyone as well.

The series was first broadcast in America on the 9th August 2008. A third series was shown from the 28th March 2009 (16th May in the US). I thought the series started to go downhill from here, but that’s just my opinion. I still believe it started off well. Later versions became even more convoluted and I lost my interest, but never stopped watching.

PHOTOGRAPH

One of the main characters throughout the programme’s history was Abby Maitland, as played by Hannah Spearritt (also known for being in the pop group ‘S Club 7’). Just to show how sad my over-all collection is, here is a picture of my Abby Maitland figure with Sabre-tooth Tiger. Don’t worry, I got it in a sale.

Austrian Winter Village Scene

Printed by

Sepp Gastberger, St. Wolfgang (Salzkammergnt)

I was unable to read the printed text on the front of this postcard, or at least I was unable until I looked at the printer details that were printed on the reverse side. From this I could then surmise that this is a village called St Wolfgang in Salzkammergnt, which the internet informs me is in Austria. It is a market town in a region of Upper Austria named after Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg. It is located on the northern shore of the Wolfgangsee lake at the foot of the Schafberg mountain.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Now this is the side which really interested me. You can see the printed text down the centre, which enabled me to locate the whereabouts of the front image. You can also see two cancels. The top placed cancel is a pictorial one for the location of STROBL, which is not far from St. Wolfgang and on the same lake. So, I immediately wonder if this card was posted from Stobl by someone who picked the card up in St Wolfgang. Then you have a Nazi swastika and eagle cancel which is has the word ‘Briefstempel’ printed along the bottom, which translates as ‘LETTER POSTMARK’. The date of the Strobl cancel is 17(?) February 1941. This is clearly during the period of the Second World War and I think this card was sent by a soldier or other military person and as such did not require the addition of a postage stamp as it was posted under the free ‘Fieldpost’ system. To me, this side has much more to recommend it to a collector than the front. There is certainly far more research that can be done around the marks applied and cards actual usage.

Last night Jo and I went to see the new Disney live action ‘Beauty and the Beast’ feature film at our local Odeon cinema. Jo was really looking forward to it, but then she is a big Disney fan. I went in a little more open minded, but still as a fan of the animated film (the postcard depicted here obviously depicts the film poster for this 1991 animated version).

So, is the new film any good? Well, actually, yes it is. I did enjoy it. But, like any new film version of a classic, or favourite film, there are always going to be one or two gripes or little bits which don’t gel. I was confused by the voicing of Mrs Potts, the teapot, not sure what Emma Thompson was aiming for, but she sung everyone’s favourite ballroom dancing ‘beauty and the beast’ song very well, I just think that Angela Lansbury’s original is a very hard act to follow. A couple of things that I did like was that all the actors sung their own songs (even Emma Watson – I read a review that said her acting was a bit wooden, which I think was a bit harsh. She may not be a natural singer but she did sing and did a good job of it and played the character well, she can certainly sing better than me, although that’s not hard to be fair!), also the story did not come as a scene for scene live action copy of the animated film, and they captured the Beast’s character much better than the animated film did. All in all, a good 7 out of 10 (a good score from me – I suspect Jo would score it higher!)

A scene captured from the animated 1991 film depicting Belle and the Beast. The scene where they both drink soup by holding the bowl and drinking from the edge of it is one which is also used in the live action film.

There are a large number of images available in this ‘Disney – The Archive Collection’, from this feature and films such as Aladdin, The Lion King and from early animated shorts where sketches and drawings from these early days of Disney animated features are depicted. These have always been popular and are worth looking out for.

This is another of the many postcards available outside of the official theme parks. This one is extra nice as it has applied glitter dust around the orange heart border around the main characters and in all the little yellow and red hearts around the design. So, I suppose it could be classed as a novelty postcard, because it has something applied to the front. The design depicts probably the best-known Disney characters.

COMIC RELIEF 2017

Well, Friday night was ‘Comic Relief’ night and over more years than I care to think about (as I remember the very first one back in 1988…..yes, 1988!) they have raised a considerable amount of money for many good causes. Unfortunately, Friday nights programming was not their best, but this does not take away from them the huge amount that was raised and the good this will do.

But, one highlight of the night was the ‘Love Actually’ mini film showing the characters from the original film today, and updating us with how they are getting on. It was good, possibly not worth watching the entire Comic Relief night for, but definitely, worth waiting for it to come on.

So, in response I picture here the poster for the original film

Ok, the whole Comic Relief programme was not great - but they did raise £48,257,346

I have previously posted two Avantcard Australia issued postcards for this exhibition. One was Superman, in a different all blue model to the one seen here, and, Wonder Woman who again was entirely in dark blue lego bricks (the two cards were also vertical in format).

Already having the previous two meant that when this one arrived I was delighted, for many reasons, perhaps the best one being that I think this is the best so far. Also, the super-heroes are depicted in their proper costume colours here, and, you get quite a range of the Justice League members:

Aquaman – Green Lantern – Cyborg – Superman -Wonder Woman – Batman.

All of the ‘above mentioned’ postcards are related to the exhibition when it was on in Australia. But, the good news is that the exhibition has come to the UK and commenced on the South Bank in London from the 1st of this month. Having seen these postcard’s I fully intend trying to visit the show here. If I do I will take some pictures and let you know if I find any postcards.
