The DVD release for the last Doctor Who series to star Peter Capaldi was released in two parts. Initially each part could be found with six exclusive postcards contained within the DVD case. Each card depicted artwork relating to one of the episodes from that series, or in the case of this part 1 package the first six episodes. This was also the series which also starred Pearl Mackie as the Doctor’s companion BILL POTTS (who I was initially unsure about, but whom I grew to really like, and I thought she deserved more than just one season). Each card in this set has the programmes title on the front and a line of descriptive text from that episode, often a quote from that episode, on the reverse side. The six cards from this first DVD release are depicted below:

This postcard was very kindly sent to me by Frank Roche who has used it to send me some fantastic new stamps for my collection – see below. The depiction of the yellow taxi cabs is quite appropriate.

This has been sent using four of the new US ‘HOT WHEELS’ 50TH Anniversary stamps which were issued on the 29th September 2018. The stamps have been cancelled with a special ‘FIRST DAY OF ISSUE – 50 HOT WHEELS – FORTWORTH TX – SEPTEMBER 29, 2018’ hand stamp. This is another great postcard/stamp combination sent to me by Frank, who does me proud with these collectible items.

There are a number of bonuses to having friends who travel, the best one being that you have friends, with the second being that they send you postcards from their trips and thirdly these will have interesting stamps on them which add to your collection. Les and Arlene we have known for a few years now and whilst we were away, they were also away, their trip being to Venice. They very kindly took time out from their holiday to send me this great artist drawn postcard which depicts the iconic gondoliers of the Venice waterways.

MARKS-POSTCARD-CHAT

Today I picked up my brand-new business cards. I decided there would need to be a postcard depicted on one side, and my details, with an acknowledgement to my postcard interest included in this sides design layout. The cards have my telephone number in the centre, which has been removed on this one as I don’t want it internationally distributed, but anyone getting one of these will have the telephone number included version.

PAPERCHASE

This was one of the new postcards I found on my most recent visit to a paperchase store. I like shaped postcards, but I find that paperchase are the only people still producing unusual new issues. If you visit London you can always find the ones of the heads of the members of the royal family, which have been around for years now, including Lady Diana, who still seems to maintain interest.

GRAF ZEPPELIN

Plain Backed Card

3RD SOUTH AMERICA FLIGHT

1932

This very collectible postcard was posted from Denmark to Paraguay and carried on board the Graf Zeppelin airship. Three stamps from the Denmark 1925 Air set have been applied:

50ore grey (SG 227 – 2014 Catalogue value used - £300)

1KR brown (SG 228 - 2014 Catalogue value used - £275)

15ore lilac (SG 225 -2014 Catalogue value used - £90)

These are quite high value stamps – total catalogue value £665 (although probably worth half this in real money) – they have been cancelled with a Copenhagen [KOBENHAVN] double ring cancels dated 15th April 1932. The card was posted in Copenhagen and then flown from Berlin to Friedrichshafen as indicated by the large circular red cachet ‘DEUTSCHE LUFTPOST – BERLIN-FRIEDRICHSHAFEN – ANSCHLUBFLUG ZUR 3 SUDAMERIKAFAHRT 1932 – DES LUFTSCHIFFS GRAF ZEPPELIN’ which can be seen top centre. The card was then carried on the Graf Zeppelin to South America where it received the special exclusive brown flight cachet which can be seen top right, and which reads: LUFTSCHIFF GRAF ZEPPELIN – 3 SUDAMERIKA FAHRT 1932. The flight took place between the 17th and 20th April 1932. The card is addressed to Paraguay and received an arrival cancellation on the reverse side dated 30th April 1932 (see below)

This one is another from my ‘Philatelic Used’ collection

See Below

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Here you have a 1985 issued 31p value ‘350 Years of Royal Mail Public Postal Service’ stamp (SG 1292) which has been cancelled with a ‘NORTH EASTERN T.P.O. NT. UP’ number 2 double ringed cancellation dated 24 March 1995. The ‘T.P.O.’ part of the cancel stands for ‘Travelling Post Office’. The ‘NT’ stands for ‘Night Time’ so this postcard was carried on the night time train travelling post office on the up-line trip.

Bottom left the card has a NYMR (North Yorkshire Moor) 25p Railway Letter stamp, a stamp classed as a Cinderella private carriage label rather than a proper postage stamp, although these are collected by stamp collectors and a range of dedicated Cinderella Label collectors. The ‘Cinderella Label’ has been cancelled with a special hand stamp that reads:

RAILWAY LETTER SERVICE

SEMINAR

AT

THE GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY

HOTEL – PETERBOROUGH

NORTH YORKSHIRE MOORS RAILWAY

GOATHLAND – 24TH MARCH 1995

There is also a straight-line cachet applied bottom right which reads:

TO BE POSTED ON ARRIVAL AT PICKERINGSTATION

This type of ‘To be posted on arrival…’ cachet is common to these postcards and covers which are carried on trains as part of a railway letter service. The 25p railway letter stamp pays for the carriage of the item on the NYMR and the postage stamp top right pays for the onwards journey to the delivery address.

It should also be noted that the train depicted on the postcard is the same as that represented on the 25p railway letter stamp.

THE AUSTIN SEVEN

AUSTIN – Looks years ahead!

Official Promotional Postcard

Ref: No. 1834

The first car I ever owned myself was a mini and as a result I have always loved them. To be fair, the heater never worked, nor did the speedo most of the time, and every so often, for reasons unknown, the headlights would go out (which always added a touch of entertainment to any night time journey!)

The car also drank oil like my wife drinks coffee, and Jo really likes coffee, but despite all these faults it was great fun to drive.

This postcard is an official promotional item which was probably either sent out to potential customers or was available in car showrooms etc to hand out to people looking at the showroom models.

EPCOT CENTER

Official Theme Park Postcard

Ref: HSC-608-J

(PC709)

“Three of Epcot’s characters pose for a photo at the base of the 18-storey high SPACESHIP EARTH”

(Text from reverse side of postcard)

This postcard is a popular one with Disney theme park postcard collectors. I think this is because the characters, which I take to be aliens, are so strange. I don’t know how long they were around, but I never saw them, and my first visit was in 1993. I do wonder if the concept of alien characters was thought out of place in a park that is so dedicated to the planet Earth. When I have seen this card on eBay it often sells for more than £5.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

For me this has always just been Epcot, I have not known it as ‘Epcot Center’ [center of course in the American spelling, the one that always drives my spell-check crazy], but you do find that the early cards seem to call it ‘Epcot Center’.

I have a small collection of American political themed postcards. They are not so easy to come across in the UK, and cards like this one here would have had a specialised circulation so would not have been so easy for me to access without contact with an American dealer. I do not fully understand the American political world beyond the fact that there is a major presidential election run every four years. This lack of knowledge does not take away my interest in the postcards though.

This copy of the postcard has an additional sticker applied to the front advertising details of a play or piece titled ‘Be Brave and Come Home Safe’ which, at the time of writing this is probably right now playing in Daventry (as I am typing this at 1530hrs - 3.30pm - on the 11th November 2018) .

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Three further stickers have been applied to the reverse side advertising other events relating to the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1. The stickers do detract a little from the cleanness of the mint un-stickered postcards, but then the card was designed to be an advert for such events. I like the fact that they found both a mint card and one with all these advert stickers applied. To have both versions seems right and adds more interest to my overall collection.

It should never be forgotten that soldiers from all-across the then British Commonwealth countries took part and were in the fighting in the trenches across the western front, and elsewhere, like Gallipoli. This poster makes-reference to the ‘Final Knock-Out’, but I wonder when it was issued and just how close it really was to what was to be the final days of the war? If this was a 1916 or 1917 poster then there was still some extensive periods of fighting to come.

I placed postcard on the webpage two years ago, but it fits the bill so well I have no qualms in depicting it again today on the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice.

I attended todays ‘Remembrance Service at my local church with Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from our troop. The Cubs, with whom I am an Assistant Leader, prepared a special commemorative board to be put up in the church this morning during the service. It has nothing to do with postcards, but I was so impressed with their work I depict it below.

Wordy posters are not often the most popular designs on postcard, but who could resist one that states; ‘BAD TEETH NO BAR’? The Desiderata series were, I believe all released in a limited edition of 500 cards and as a result some of the issues can be a little more expensive, this is because the French really liked their limited-edition postcards and during the 1980’s these often became hard to source in the UK. Now of course a lot of these are turning back up on the market and often sell for less than they did back then.

Let’s be honest here, this is a tourist scene postcard and one which would not greatly appeal on the merits of the picture itself. Thankfully, this has some interesting reverse side additions…

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

The stamp used here is the 1980 Germany issued ‘250TH Anniversary of Moravian Brethren’s Book of Daily Bible Readings’ (SG 1932). It has been cancelled with a special hand stamp relating to the visit of a specific ship on 21st September 1980. There is also a large circular cachet for the ships visit, which was for the period of the 19th – 21st September 1980, so the special hand stamp previously mentioned is dated for the last day of the ships visit. The ship in question was the ‘TROSS-SCHIFF “WESTERWALD”’ which was on a visit to Flensburg, which is also the location on the previously mentioned special hand stamp cancelling the stamp.

This is a nice shipping related philatelic item which would be of more interest to a stamp and postal history collector than a pure postcard collector.
