A Policeman’s lot is not a happy one…, or so the song goes, and it is a sad fact that old police officers find themselves attending the funerals of other officers, both colleagues and friends. Today was such a day. After the festivities of the past two days it was sad to have to attend a funeral this morning and along with many of my colleagues say goodbye to an old work friend. So, in remembrance of Mick, a good Sgt friend of mine and whose funeral it was, I post this photographic postcard depicting a policeman still working hard despite the atrocious weather. Mick would have approved.

This postcard depicts the abandoned coliseum in Nuremberg which was intended to be a grand and major Nazi rallying ground, but work stopped on it before the war came to an end. It was designed by Franz and Ludwig Ruff in 1935. It is located very close to the massive Nuremberg parade grounds where Hitler gave his speeches, and which is known to historians and TV viewers through the images of Hitler on the podium in front of massed Nazi supporters. The structure was clearly designed to resemble the Coliseum in Rome, and you can see the similarities, and I have been to both locations.
Today the edifice is the location of the Documentation Center Museum, although to be honest most of the buildings central parade area is now just an open site, which you can walk into free (the museum part does have an entrance fee). The main area is a bit derelict and rough looking, almost like a work site, but I wanted to pay a visit, and I took some photographs whilst there, which can be seen below.
I did not find any current postcards like this one on sale, but fortunately I found this one in a box of old postcards on sale at a museum shop.

I collect super-hero themed postcards, even really-unusual ones like this one. The colours of the clothing on this peg are clearly meant to resemble the costume of Superman, with its classic blue body stocking and red over-the-top underpants, although here its more of a red belt. I picked up this card in Nuremberg, so its another of my German trip finds. Germany, and here I mean Nuremberg for my holiday, proved to be a wonderful source of modern and interesting postcards.

Before we move away from all the Christmas related postcards which have been appearing across the webpage over the past few weeks I just want to show this last one because it is a companion card to a Father Christmas card by the same publishers which was posted on Christmas Day, so I thought I would say goodbye to all the festivities with this last card.

“GEDENKKARTE ZUM TAG DER BEFREIUNG DES KZ. DACHAU 29. APRIL 1945”
(Memorial Card for the Day of Liberation of the KZ. Dachau 29 April 1945)
I have wanted a copy of this 1946 issued postcard, which commemorates the first anniversary of the Liberation of the Dachau Concentration Camp, for a few years now. They do not crop up often and can therefore be hard to source. So, I was delighted to receive this copy as a Christmas present from Jo (you got to love a partner who knows what you like). When I first saw a copy of this card, in an auction catalogue a few years ago, I was surprised that someone had produced it, but I believe now that it’s issue may have some connection with the Jewish military or civilian organisation working at the Dachau location post war. With my interest in military related postcards, and all aspects of the history of World War II, this postcard immediately appealed to me. Now I own a copy.
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
Not only is the postcard itself a great item, but it is also one used with a special hand stamp:
TAG DER BEFREIUNG

DACHAU
29. 4. 1945 – 46
Day of Liberation
I. I. O.
Dachau
29. 4. 1945 – 46
This hand stamp is dated for the first anniversary of the Liberation of this horrendous concentration camp. A few years ago, Jo and I were on holiday in Germany and were close enough to make a visit to Dachau and see the Concentration camp. The gas chamber and crematorium building still stands and it is without a doubt the most hauntingly awful place I have ever stood in.

I hope you all had a marvellous day yesterday and received all the presents you wished for. Boxing Day is a big day in our household and is ‘actually’ the day that we, in my family, all get together, so only a quick posting today during a short quiet period (not that quiet to be honest!) Christmas Day and Father Christmas postcards are fairly-common as could be seen by my Christmas Day Count Down postings up to and including yesterday, but ‘Boxing Day’ related postcards are far more-scarce. This one, and the one below, are the only two modern ones that I know of.

Father Christmas was traditionally depicted in a tan coat, but many old original postcards from Europe do depict him in green. This is a good example of how our ideas of the character have changed over the years. I believe the red coat originated in America around the 1880’s with the drawings by Thomas Nast, who also came up with a green coat, the idea of which also caught on and as can be seen was used here

Personal Christmas Card 2018
David and Pat Rye always send me something unusual every Christmas, usually a hand-made individual card. The image is made up from applied pieces of coloured card, which almost gives this a 3D(ish) affect which is far better than this scan depicts.
David has also applied the 2nd class Royal Mail 2018 postage stamp which has been cancelled first day of issue 01 DEC 2018 with a ‘MILFORD HAVEN PEMPS’ single circle date stamp. This also adds extra interest to the card as well.

This is a nice religious themed postcard which I found in a large box of these in the highly religious shop (it was also a quite large shop as well) attached to the St Elizabeth Church, a large domed Catholic church in Nuremberg. For me the attraction was the illustrated bird, which is a Bullfinch, a bird I really like but rarely see around my way. I have oft mentioned the lack of interest in religious postcards by postcard collectors, but I have come to realise that on the continent of Europe these cards are picked up as souvenirs of visits by non-collectors who attend these churches, and although these people do not consider themselves to be collectors I think they are, all-be-it a different type of collector to someone like me.

NURNBERGER CHRISTKIND 2017 / 2018
REBECCA AMMON

CHRISTINE DIERENBACH
Official Christkindlesmarkt Postcard
For the past two years the Nuremberg Christkind has been portrayed by Rebecca Ammon. The Christkind is a traditional gift-bringer in Germany (also in Austria, Switzerland, The Czech Republic, Slovenia, Belgium, Ital and other countries around these across Europe).
Now, I was very lucky to get a copy of this postcard as it can not be bought. Usually you obtain a copy by meeting the Christkind, i.e. getting to see Rebecca Ammon in this guise. She hands out copies personally. But, the philatelic counter in the main Nuremberg post office have a few under the counter. I visited here to buy a selection of stamp sheets for my television stamp collection. I had bought five sheets and a special presentation stamp folder and was having a nice chat with the man behind the counter. As I bought quite a lot of stuff it was clear I was a collector, so he very kindly pulled one of these cards out of a drawer and gave me a free copy. He also explained to me that normally the card was only given out by the Christkind personally. The card makes a great souvenir of my trip and is also another great example of why I always try and talk with people at these locations as you never know what else they might have.

Paddy Ashdown, as he was then (he was to become Lord Ashdown later) did not appear on that many postcards, but he can be seen here depicted as the referee during the election of 1992. This cartoon intimates that it was really a fight between the tory John Major and the Labour leader Neil Kinnock. Clearly the Conservative Tories won as Major can be seen standing over a knocked-out Kinnock. The results of the election were printed on the reverse side of this card:
Conservatives 336
Labour 271
Liberal Democrats 20
