Vote in this year’s General Election
‘MINISTRY OF SOUND’
This was an interesting and highly controversial set of four cards, so controversial in fact that one of the designs was pulled and even banned in some areas.
The idea is simple enough, depict a person, or a person’s actions that would cause either a perceived or real offence to what could here be described as normal people and use this image to try and get the viewer of the image to make their vote at the general election.
USE YOUR VOTE
When this card came out the whole campaign around fox hunting and banning it was a top agenda news item. Thus, this image was very impactive, and I am not sure that it is still not the case. Having said that this image was designed to be offensive, it is not the worse of this series, as you will see.

Nazi Modern Follower
Again, you have an image of someone who would cause offensive on so many levels. Can you imagine coming across a stack of this postcard in a free postcard rack? These postcards were given away in spinners and racks from the Boomerang freecard distribution company. I don’t have to imagine the surprise of coming across these as I did just that, in my local Odeon cinema! I can see what was trying to be achieved here, but I am not so sure the route the designers took was such a good one.

Praise God for AIDS
If the card above was not offensive enough, I think this design was the second from worse of the four designs, remember one design was withdrawn after causing extreme offense, but that was the card shown below, not this one, although I think this one comes pretty close to being over offensive, the message on the placard certainly is offensive. Some people collect AIDS related postcards, I certainly have a number, but I concentrate on Aids Day postcards which are therefore more compassionate towards those who suffered, died and still suffer from this virus.

Piss on Niggers
I am sure that like me you can clearly see why this card got withdrawn after being banned in some locations. If the images in this set were designed to cause offence towards the person depicted within the image then this one, which was the only card to not feature a human being in the image, succeeded too well. Rather than achieving what I think was an admirable intention, to get more people voting, this design just shocked people so much the intended message was lost.
This one was too much, the use of the ‘N’ word was beyond the line, rather than concentrating on the type of person who would graffiti such a thing people, understandably I think, were just too shocked by the image itself.
Unfortunately, as is often the case with any design that is banned, withdrawn or causes such offence that it becomes news, in-its-own right, this postcard became collectible and hard to source, even at the time, but especially now. The three cards depicted above can be picked up for around £1 each (I have even seen them at just 50p recently), but this card here is catalogued at £5, its that scarce (although I give you the prevision that if you come across one much cheaper it is because the seller does not know the back story, not that the card is not worth this much… but good luck trying to source this one)

I like good photography, especially stuff which could be called artistic, although I think photography is a form of its own which is a separate form of skill. I know some call it art, but why can it not just be good photography rather than art.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has any more cards in this style in this series. Judging from the numbering I am missing a few at least.

There are some unusual postcards which come out of Sweden! This one was apparently given away free, or at least made available to, students! Which seems even more explicable to me. I can’t be bothered to translate all the text on the reverse side, so I don’t know what all these breast manipulations mean… is it art? I don’t know, if you are interested, by all means translate it!

Ok, apparently you can stick your fingers through the two well placed holes. Why you would want to do this is another thing entirely! For me, this is just a rather unusual television related postcard in my collection.

CREATION BY THE ARTIST
EDITIONS DU TRIANGE
Limited Edition of just 50 copies
A rather unusual Gulf War postcard which has a naked Margaret Thatcher running across it! A naked Margaret Thatcher postcard normally means a French issue, and this is the case here. You can always rely on the French private postcard producers to come up with something different. As there were supposedly only 50 copies of this postcard it can be an expensive one to pick up (at £3.50 per card now).

To be honest this one could probably have gone on the main webpage, but I’m playing safe with the clear S&M content that is here. A great card which must have caused some parsing interest in some racks in some states in the US, but not San Francisco I suspect, so maybe it was only distributed here.

Another postcard with a superb and important message, but as it includes nudity, I have decided to depict it here, probably against my better judgement considering the cards message.

The thing with some of these images is that although they depict some naughty happenings they are also quite exceptionally artistically crafted. This one caught my eye on Saturday so I bought it to depict here.

GRATISPOSTKARTE – PICKUP EDITION
Official Record Promotion Postcard
It is a shame that this postcard had to include the ‘F’ word as otherwise I could have placed this on the main webpage as I like what it is saying here. Having said that, I accept that it had to be used here as this is the records title.

Postcard Sized Card Flyer
I like these double-sided advertising card flyers when they have something film or TV related on them. This one has a bit of everything on it. Anyone interested in music is immediately going to realise that this design is based somewhat on the Beatles album ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. There is some nudity on the left side, so I have depicted here rather than on the main page.
EDITIONS JACQUES LARDIE
When Aids was circulating around in the news and becoming the big fear of the moment with the general public private postcard publishers around the world were issuing postcards related to the topic. These were sometimes blunt and distasteful, but sometimes also they were trying to be pictorially informative, anything really to make their cards catch the eye. This one has an interesting comment in its reference to the use of needles in transferring the disease and the use of the French word for Aids, ‘Sida’.

A similar idea by the same publisher, although I think the above design is by a different artist (although I could be wrong) whilst this design is definitely drawn by Lardie.
THE BRITISH WAY OF LIFE IN IRELAND
Printed and Published by
THE REPUBLICAN MOVEMENT
Like any organisation, terrorist or otherwise, there is a perceived requirement for propaganda, and postcards are a cheap and quick way of putting forward your views and ideologies. This means that organisations which are fighting for their cause, like the IRA (Irish Republican Army), have produced their own propaganda political postcards. This one here is from the height of the IRA’s 1980’s campaign of bombing and terrorism, not that they would refer to their actions in the same words.
R. V. H. WORKERS – I SUPPORT – THE MEN IN H BLOCK
Printed and Published by
THE REPUBLICAN MOVEMENT
This card is from the same period of ‘The Troubles’ as the above card. This one is more political in its content as it relates to the hunger strikes being conducted by the IRA inmates at the Maze Prison’s H – Block in Northern Ireland. This prison was used to house paramilitary prisoners during the Troubles from around 1971 to 2000.
IRA postcards like this were simply printed and despite their political ideological source they have become quite collectible. They are also often quite hard to find as well as copies got circulated and damaged, and, also kept by those who followed the beliefs. For me these cards cover a period of modern history which I lived through, and my interest in them is in their historic place in our story.
SUBJECT OR OBJECT?
OPEN HEAD PRESS
2 BLENHEIM CRESCENT, LONDON W11 1NN
This postcard caused an uproar when it came out and it quickly became notorious and was all but banned from many locations. Having said all that, it is probably no surprise that it has gone on to become a very collectible and valuable postcard, and one which now has a catalogue value exceeding £5, but copies are scarce.
HOW I SLEEP
KNOWING THAT I REALLY F*UCKED UP TODAY
Ah, a cute little kitten, but also, again, the ‘F’ word is considered a vital element of the joke, and this time the joke would probably not work without it.
To be fair this card could probably go on the main webpage, but better safe than sorry. This is a current issue and can be found on sale in many of the paperchase shops at this time.
I TOLD YOU NOT TO USE BLEACH.
FUCK OF SHARON
Exclusively Published by the Stationery chain
This one fits into my ‘Tiger’ theme, and although I like the joke, and the image, this is a design which uses the ‘F’ word, so it needs to be depicted here under the Censored tab.
This one is currently available in branches of ‘Scribbler’.

In my opinion this is art as you can go into any major London Art Gallery, or other located major collection, and see paintings like this, and ones that are more extreme. Having said that, the depicted nudity here is greater than the previously depicted card.

A version of this image has already appeared on the main webpage, and a year ago I would have put this one on their as well, but I have made a decision that any nudity, art or photographic whether considered art or otherwise will now be posted here. This will save me any issues in our current age of over sensitivity.
