This is definitely an unusual Christmas tree! As I have been posting Christmas themed postcards on the main webpage, I thought it would be interesting to have some cards here on the Censored page. This advertising postcard would seem to fit the bill, although I was surprised that this sort of image was available in the racks in the US, which is perceived to have a very puritan approach to this sort of thing, perhaps not!

You rarely find a single penis on a postcard! I really would not want to count how many are on display here. This is a postcard I have had in my collection for many years, over fifteen years at least.

Albert Dubout (15/5/1905 – 27/6/1976) is a well-known cartoonist and book illustrator, although he also created movie and theatre posters, advertising material and record sleeves. In 1953 the French president Vincent Auriol awarded Dubout the Legion of Honour. A lot of his major work could appear on the main webpage, but these rather naughty illustrations shown here really did need to be shown here.

Vote in this year’s General Election

‘MINISTRY OF SOUND’

Published by

BOOMERANG MEDIA

This was an interesting and highly controversial set of four cards, so controversial in fact that one of the designs was pulled and even banned in some areas.

The idea is simple enough, depict a person, or a person’s actions that would cause either a perceived or real offence to what could here be described as normal people and use this image to try and get the viewer of the image to make their vote at the general election.

USE YOUR VOTE

Fox Hunting

Published by

BOOMERANG MEDIA

When this card came out the whole campaign around fox hunting and banning it was a top agenda news item. Thus, this image was very impactive, and I am not sure that it is still not the case. Having said that this image was designed to be offensive, it is not the worse of this series, as you will see.

USE YOUR VOTE

Nazi Modern Follower

Published by

BOOMERANG MEDIA

Again, you have an image of someone who would cause offense on so many levels. Can you imagine coming across a stack of this postcard in a free postcard rack? These postcards were given away in spinners and racks from the Boomerang freecard distribution company. I don’t have to imagine the surprise of coming across these as I did just that, in my local Odeon cinema! I can see what was trying to be achieved here, but I am not so sure the route the designers took was such a good one.

USE YOUR VOTE

Praise God for AIDS

Published by

BOOMERANG MEDIA

If the card above was not offensive enough, I think this design was the second from worse of the four designs, remember one design was withdrawn after causing extreme offense, but that was the card shown below, not this one, although I think this one comes pretty close to being over offensive, the message on the placard certainly is offensive. Some people collect AIDS related postcards, I certainly have a number, but I concentrate on Aids Day postcards which are therefore more compassionate towards those who suffered, died and still suffer from this virus.

USE YOUR VOTE

Piss on Niggers

Published by

BOOMERANG MEDIA

I am sure that like me you can clearly see why this card got withdrawn after being banned in some locations. If the images in this set were designed to cause offence towards the person depicted within the image then this one, which was the only card to not feature a human being in the image, succeeded too well. Rather than achieving what I think was an admirable intention, to get more people voting, this design just shocked people so much the intended message was lost.

This one was too much, the use of the ‘N’ word was beyond the line, rather than concentrating on the type of person who would graffiti such a thing people, understandably I think, were just too shocked by the image itself.

Unfortunately, as is often the case with any design that is banned, withdrawn or causes such offence that it becomes news, in-its-own right, this postcard became collectible and hard to source, even at the time, but especially now. The three cards depicted above can be picked up for around £1 each (I have even seen them at just 50p recently), but this card here is catalogued at £5, its that scarce (although I give you the previsio that if you come across one much cheaper it is because the seller does not know the back story, not that the card is not worth this much… but good luck trying to source this one)

When Aids was circulating around in the news and becoming the big fear of the moment with the general public private postcard publishers around the world were issuing postcards related to the topic. These were sometimes blunt and distasteful, but sometimes also they were trying to be pictorially informative, anything really to make their cards catch the eye. This one has an interesting comment in its reference to the use of needles in transferring the disease and the use of the French word for Aids, ‘Sida’.

THE BRITISH WAY OF LIFE IN IRELAND

Printed and Published by

THE REPUBLICAN MOVEMENT

Like any organisation, terrorist or otherwise, there is a perceived requirement for propaganda, and postcards are a cheap and quick way of putting forward your views and ideologies. This means that organisations which are fighting for their cause, like the IRA (Irish Republican Army), have produced their own propaganda political postcards. This one here is from the height of the IRA’s 1980’s campaign of bombing and terrorism, not that they would refer to their actions in the same words.

R. V. H. WORKERS – I SUPPORT – THE MEN IN H BLOCK

Printed and Published by

THE REPUBLICAN MOVEMENT

This card is from the same period of ‘The Troubles’ as the above card. This one is more political in its content as it relates to the hunger strikes being conducted by the IRA inmates at the Maze Prison’s H – Block in Northern Ireland. This prison was used to house paramilitary prisoners during the Troubles from around 1971 to 2000.

IRA postcards like this were simply printed and despite their political ideological source they have become quite collectible. They are also often quite hard to find as well as copies got circulated and damaged, and, also kept by those who followed the beliefs. For me these cards cover a period of modern history which I lived through, and my interest in them is in their historic place in our story.
