CHRISTMAS GREETINGS

(Overprint)

Published by

M. M. VIENNE

Ref: Nr. 152

Is this the worse possible postcard to have a Christmas Greeting s overprint? Quite possibly. Here in the UK I suspect that very few, if any in fact, will be having their Christmas meal outside in the form of a picnic, and I doubt it is very likely in France where this particular postcard was possibly issued, with the company having an office in Paris (16 Cite Trevise), although I have read that all their postcards were printed in Austria. Quite possibly this is my strangest Christmas themed postcard, but then really it is only the additional overprint which has this connection.

MAY CHRISTMAS BRING PEACE AND GOODWILL

Published by

JOHN THRIDGOULD & COMPANY

Ref: THE CHRISTMAS PATRIOTIC SERIES : 16

(Postal used 24th December 1914)

Published in the first year of the First World War for the Christmas that many believed that the war would have been over by, but as we all know there were many more years of fighting still to occur.

This card has been postmarked 24th December 1914 from BALHAMS.W and was cancelled with a rolling machine cancellation. A nice, although simple, postcard with nice usage.

I missed yesterdays post because of work, so today I will post a couple of cards. This one appeals to me because it is by one of my favourite postcard artists, Rick Geary. It also has an unusual Christmas approach about it with the publishers themselves depicted on the front in Christmas costumes.

PANEL GREETING CARD

“A MERRY XMAS FRIEND – TO YOU – AND YOURS”

Special overprint on reverse side

All printed on a thick ‘panel’ card

Published by

C. W. FAULKNER & Co. Ltd., London, E.C.

These thick panel cards were a novelty type which had popularity for a short time. The Christmas connection here is the printing on the reverse side which places it firmly in the theme, even if the front image has no connection at all. I bought this one for the dogs that appear on the front, and for its novelty aspect as I collect novelty postcards as a theme, the Christmas connection was just a bonus.

The Christmas theme is acquired through the additional red printing applied to the front of this postcard top left. Louis Wain cat postcards have always been popular, and I was fortunate to pick this great card up in Florida for just $5 back in 2019, it was a real bargain.

Although the stamp has been damaged, probably in transit in the post at the time, but the cancellation is a lovely flag ‘BACK BAY STATION’ cancel. This cancel adds interest to the card for me. It is also nice to see that this was posted on Christmas Eve in 1908

For a couple of weeks now I have been both unwell and busy working on my Covid collection (my collection has helped take my mind of the bug I have caught – and I have tested and its not Covid I’ve gone down with). As a result, through all the coughing, when it came to starting the Christmas countdown this year it was the Covid masked Santa cards that came to mind. It can come as a bit of a surprise to some just how many masked Father Christmas postcards came out.

I am not ready to start my Christmas countdown yet, but somehow this postcard has always had a bit of a Christmassy feel about it to me, although it is not themed as such. Perhaps it is the religious context and look about it that does it and until you realise that one of the depicted people is a woman there is a three wise men initial look as well, but this is definitely not in anyway linked to the nativity story. It is a lovely card though and was extremely cheap so I could not resist it for the collection.

Printed by

When our kids were quite young, we went to the Isle of Wight for a holiday and visited Blackgang Chine and walked through here. Jo, my wife, has a photograph of her and her brother sitting on a horse here when they were both children on one of their family holidays, so Jo has been here many times as the Isle of Wight was one of their regular holiday destinations. Although I have been to the Isle of Wight a few times I have only been to Blackgang Chine once, so my memories are all as an adult (although Jo says that where I am concerned it still counts as a child!)

This postcard was posted in the early 1980’s as it has a 14p Machin head stamp, although cancelled slightly off card so the year cannot be discerned, but the 14p was the first class rate between 26th January 1981 and 1st February 1982, so the card was logically used in this period, and this is where stamp knowledge can help you with your postcards.

Thanksgiving starts tomorrow for all my American friends, so I am going to start early by showing a card from my collection. I don’t have a large collection of these, but I like to pick up US holiday and special day postcards when I am actually in America. This card, and the one I will depict tomorrow were both picked up at an antiques fair in Florida back in January of this year. I do think that the style of these Thanksgiving cards are great and I like that they are often, like this one, embossed.

We had our church remembrance service yesterday on the actual 11th November, but today is still Remembrance Sunday so this year we remember those who lost their lives during military conflicts across two days, so, for the whole weekend, and I cannot think of a more deserving cause to receive these commemorations.

This is a postcard I picked up earlier in the year from a cheap box and it is a superb example of how across the country the 11th November Armistice Day anniversary is remembered.

I bought this great card in America in 2019 and have been waiting for this year’s Halloween to come around to show it to you as it is a favourite of mine. It was an expensive card despite being a reproduction card, but then in the US Halloween cards are highly collected and reach much higher prices than they would do here in the UK.

As you can see here, the pumpkin has been moved around. Mechanical postcards have always been popular and even though this is a modern reproduction card it cost me $12.

The loss of life and all the people who have sustained injuries is truly tragic and I naturally hope that all the people who helped make my recent holiday in the city so fantastic have not suffered. Also, as someone who was only recently in the area and who was fascinated by the beauty of the buildings and architectural heritage of much that I saw, I am also saddened by the damage I have witnessed in images coming from the area of the buildings concerned.

The quality of printed postcards does often depend on the productivity quality and monetary position of the country in question. This card is very simply printed on what I think it would be fair to describe as cheaper quality matt card stock, but having stated that the card here is not well printed there was still something about it which made it appeal to me. Perhaps it was the price, just 10p, but it may also have been the Russian connection. I like looking at cards produced in foreign countries as there is often a lot of social history wrapped in the story behind how these cards were printed.

I could never resist any postcard which depicts animals of any type, even unusual ones like this name card. The reason this card also caught my eye is that there was something about the animals which rang a bell. Going back through my old London Zoo postcards I realised my initial thoughts were correct and at least some of these animal photographs were taken from photographs used to produce postcards from London Zoo. I strongly suspect that all these animals were photographed at London Zoo. As I collect London Zoo postcards, I think this will make an unusual unofficial addition to that collection.

BARBIE

IN THE 12 DANCING PRINCESSES

Official Barbie Animated Film Publicity Postcard

My daughter and her friends went to see the new Barbie film last night, the one everyone seems to be talking about and starring Margot Robbie, and they really enjoyed it. I have not seen any postcards featuring the new film yet (but they will come if they are not already out there). So, to be topical I am depicting this postcard showing artwork from the 2006 animated film featuring Barbie. This was initially released on the 19th September 2006 and was distributed by Universal Pictures.

I am unaware of the exact source of this particular postcard, but it has the feel of a freebie card and possibly, just possibly, it could have been a DVD/Video free extra. It just has the feel of a card given away with something rather than an individual issued card. If you know where it came from then let me know.

This is another early attempt to find a way to make postcards look and feel a bit different, this is because postcard publishers were always trying to find something different to make their cards stand out to customers. Dogs were always popular as a theme and many cards featuring them were issued during the golden age period of postcard production, but they are still popular today.

H.M.S. MAJESTIC

(FIRST CLASS BATTLESHIP)

Published by

(Posted from Aldershot 27th July 1906)

The HMS Majestic was ‘Majestic’ class pre-dreadnought battleship which was commissioned in 1895. She was attached to the Channel Fleet until 1904 and then transferred to the Atlantic fleet. When the first world war broke out, she initially was attached to the Channel Fleet again before being moved to escort duties for the Canadian troop convoys. In 1915 she could be found in the Mediterranean participating in the unsuccessful Dardanelles campaign. She took part in bombardments of Turkish forts and supported the allied landings at Gallipoli. Sadly, she became the victim of a U-boat off Cape Helles and was sunk by torpedo on the 27th May 1915 with the loss of 49 men.

This is what I like about postcards like this. I found it in a 10p box at a fair and bought it without any knowledge of the battleship or its history. Having the card has caused me to research it and discover the story of its involvement in the Dardanelles and its tragic ending. A great early military postcard with a fascinating story attached to the depicted battleship.

This lovely American postcard has the bonus of fitting into several themes including Trains, Transport, Food, Advertising and possibly even posters, although this last one is a bit of a push. Being a posted postcard, the card has received some transit damage, something which is not unusual and happens when the cards go through the sorting machine. Despite this minor image damage, I thought the image was superb and I do like these food advertising labels which were so popular in America and which often appear on postcards. This cracking card cost me just 10p, from a box of 10p cards I just had to have a look through.

This postcard has the poster for the 1974 film version of this Agatha Christie book. I am posting this one here because last night I watched again the more recent 2017 Kenneth Branagh version which I prefer. I really enjoyed this one when I saw it at the cinema and have watched a few times since so when I saw it was on last night, I settled down for an enjoyable night of viewing. Having said I really enjoyed this film I found it such a shame that the next film, ‘Death on the Nile’ (2022), which is my favourite Christie book, which also meant I was looking forward to it, was such a disappointment and was in my mind just too dark and lost much of the background humour that was built into how the character interacted with others. In this case I preferred the earlier 1978 version starring Peter Ustinov. I shall therefore not be holding my breath in anticipation of ‘A Haunting in Venice’ which is released this year (currently booked for September). This new Hercule Poirot film is based on the Christie book titled ‘Hallowe’en Party’ which was first published in 1969. The books story is based in the UK so the film is taking some major leaps situating it in Venice – do I need to be worried again?
