CRINKLEY BOTTOM
25TH ANNIVERSARY
1994 – 2019
SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY PACKAGE
In 1994 Noel Edmonds agreed a deal with Lancaster City Council to open a Crinkley Bottom theme park area in the grounds of Happy Mount Park in Morecambe. The original name was ‘Noel Edmonds World of Crinkley Bottom’, but after issues over the lower than expected attendance levels, and the liquor licence awarded the property causing locals to complain, the park was closed after just thirteen weeks.
Two other parks were also opened, but these also closed after only a short period.
The parks were based on the fictional village of Crinkley Bottom that appeared in the television series ‘Noel’s House Party’. Some of the parks apparent attraction seemed to rely on the then popularity of the character Mr Blobby, who appears on two of the below postcards.
This package of items seems to be some sort of commemoration of the opening of the park, although why is anyone’s guess, but with the TV connections I decided to obtain one of what appears to be 50 numbered packs (although I would not be surprised to find any of these items being sold separately)

Clearly this is the photograph from which the postcard further up (which did come with the package), with the artwork version, was taken from. The artwork is a direct copy of this photograph. The logo in the centre on the postcard further up is clearly the 25th anniversary logo, whilst the one here has a location-based logo. I bought this one first and then came across the package above and thought the two postcards were the same and therefore I was going to be needlessly buying this one, but when they arrived I realised the difference and was glad that it happened this way around otherwise I might not have noticed and would not have had this example in my collection. The reverse side of this postcard is also different.

RUTGER HAUER…..RIP
Rutger Oelsen Hauer
23rd January 1944 – 19th July 2019
Dutch actor known for many film appearances and the Guinness TV adverts. His films included:
Nighthawks (1981), Blade Runner (1982), Ladyhawke (1985), The Hitcher (1985), Flesh & Blood (1985), Wanted: Dead or Alive (1987), Split Second (1992), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (film – 1992), Sin City (2005), Batman Begins (2005), Hobo with a Shotgun (2011 – possibly one of weirdest films he made, its not a good film, not by any means, but it defies description in its strangeness!).
On TV he appeared in many programmes including ‘Inside the Third Reich where he played Albert Speer, and ‘Escape from Sobibor’ (1987) which I remember watching, but these mentions barely scratch the surface of both his film and TV appearances.

I was saddened to read in the current issue of PPM (Picture Postcard Monthly) of the death of Rosalind Wicks. I was a huge fan of her postcard artwork and collected her cards from her early days right through to her retirement. I also had the pleasure of meeting Rosalind several times and she signed a selection of her postcards for me. It was always a joy to chat with Rosalind about her work and the current postcard situation. Even better though, in my view, is that I got to subsequently regularly correspond with Rosalind over the last fifteen years of her postcard issuing period. Rosalind would send me copies of all her new issues and explain to me why they were being published. I thoroughly enjoyed these years of exchanging letters and was sorry to hear from her when she announced to me that she was ceasing her postcard work, but over the years of her postcard publishing Rosalind was responsible for an outstanding range of images all painted in her very distinctive style (although Rosalind also produced some photographic postcard images as well, nearly all with a Post Box theme). My condolences to her family on their loss.

The Apollo 11 crew were the only astronauts to be kept in quarantine after their return to Earth, but at that time no one knew if they would be bringing back anything that might cause infections or issues here back on Earth. Thankfully this was not the case and all future astronauts did not have to go through this procedure.

New TAB:
‘FERNSEHTURM – The East Berlin TV Tower’
I have spent the last two days doing a large posting related to the Fernsehturm, or the Berlin Television Tower (previously known as the East Berlin TV Tower) postcards. Rather than place these on the main page I have placed the cards – all 113 [yes one hundred and thirteen] under a separate Tab titled ‘FERNSEHTURM – The East Berlin TV Tower’ (see home page). Under this tab is a further three tabs all showing postcards of this famous Berlin landmark (‘Berlin TV Tower 2’, ‘Berlin TV Tower 3’ and ‘Berlin TV Tower 4’). The 113 postcards are spread across these four pages. The cards include photographic, art, montage, novelty and the down-right weird. There are some interesting postcard images here and it also works as an example of what you can do towards building a collection related to just the one structure (and all the cards were bought this year over two visits to the city of Berlin)

(This is the series of postcards which I discovered in the town of Sainte, which is located close to where my In-Laws house is located, in Venerand, France. The cards depict old adverts from all periods, but I particularly like the ones from the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s, and those depicting farm equipment & vehicles, Cars, Vans, Motorcycles and other forms of transport – many of which I have not seen on postcard before. I also like the fact that these postcards were locally published in Saintes. I like this series a lot and I have previously posted some examples)
This is another great example of this local French company’s output. I loved these cards and they were one of my major finds when visiting my in-laws here back in the late 2000’s. On my last visit, last year it was sad to see far fewer of their cards being sold. Thankfully I had picked up quite a few over previous years. This advert here is an early American with a great piece of artwork.

This is an early postcard depicting the Roman arena in the town of Saintes in France. I know this area well and have posted cards related to it several times in the past because this is the area where my in-laws used to live (and where the family still own a house).
I have visited this arena many times and have walked around its walls and sat in the seats that go up around the central arena ground, which unlike the image here has now been cleared away and has been levelled out to look like it would have done back in its heyday. It is an impressive structure, and even more so now than as depicted here as much work has been done on it since this image was taken turning it into a major tourist site for the town. Having visited it I had to have this old postcard when I came across it in a collector’s shop in the town. For me it is a memento of my visits.

DOUGLAS (ISLE OF MANN)
BAMFORTH & CO., LIMITED
Staying with the theme but showing a comic side to the fascination with the Apollo moon missions, this contemporary postcard is a smashing UK issued postcard published by the company renowned for its saucy seaside comic postcards, although this one is not so saucy, just quite amusing and topical.
NEVER MIND LANDING A MAN ON THE MOON –

Published by
BAMFORTH & CO., LIMITED
Ref: “COMIC” Series (No. 2573)
Another card by the same company as above, but this one is much closer to the Bamforth saucy seaside postcard roots. I think this card, and the one above are great and unusual contemporary moon landing era postcards, a different approach to celebrating the great event.
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
I am showing this because it has an unusual aspect to it. It has the standard “COMIC” series number down the left side, but it also has a number which has been blocked out, Number 2524 [I have written the number underneath it in pencil]. I don’t know why this number was blocked out, perhaps it had already mistakenly been used or had there been a printing era at the printing works! Who knows, whichever it is it does make for a curiosity item and another interesting aspect to the card.

This is a more recent comic take on the idea of placing a man on the moon. Even though this is much later than the 1960’s I still think it fits nicely with the more contemporary postcards depicted above. I think it would be an interesting approach to collect the comic postcard designs related to the moon landing and the idea of the sending of man to the moon.

ROYAL MAIL
Ref: PHQ 1
This was Royals Mails very first PHQ (Postal Headquarters) and it has some very different qualities to what we now know as the standard PHQ stamp card design. Firstly, the card was much larger than the now normal PHQ card size. It also had a white boarder instead of the now well-known beige like colour. It is also the only PHQ card to have added text on the front, here this describes the reason for the depicted stamps issue. Only one PHQ card was released although there were three stamps in the set. Now days we accept that a single card is realised for every single stamp in a set, but for the first few issues Royal Mail picked just one stamp from a set to be depicted on a card. Also, every subsequent PHQ card has been issued in time to be used First Day of Issue with the depicted stamp (meaning that the card(s) are issued prior to the release date of the depicted stamp(s). With this first PHQ card it was released some time after the release date of the depicted stamp and its set. This means that technically this card could not be used first day of issue for the stamp shown with that stamp. Having said that, some cards can be found back dated by favour with a 16th May first day of issue cancel, but these are not accepted as true first day of issue items.
This is an interesting PHQ card with a lot of differences than we now come to accept from PHQ issues and as a result copies are sought after and cards can be £50 even without any cancels, which we call ‘Mint’.

LIMITED EDITION LARGE FRAMED PRINT
Signed by the American artist
PAUL CALLE
(1928 – 2010)
Designer of the 1969 American 10c Apollo 11 ‘FIRST MAN ON THE MOON’ stamp
Some years ago, I was fortunate enough to be offered this large framed limited-edition print by another collector at my local stamp club. The print depicts a piece of artwork by Paul Calle who painted the artwork design used on the famous American 10c first man on the moon stamp, issued 1969. One of these stamps, along with other space themed US stamps is mounted underneath the main print. In 1962 Calle was selected to participate in the NASA Art Program which lead to him designing the 1969 stamp.
This item appealed to me because it is signed by the artist (bottom left corner of the prints boarder). The addition of this signature, and his connection with the issue of so many stamp-designs, makes this a great item with a strong philatelic connection, and something very different for my collection.

I have said this before, but it should be noted that in and around Orlando, Florida you do not have to go into the actual Disney theme parks to pick up nice Disney postcards. Personally, I think that the designs officially published by ‘The Postcard Factory’ are the best ones available, and they can be found in numerous souvenir and gift shops in the areas around the parks. They are also, thankfully, considerably cheaper than the official theme park postcards.
