Large shaped edge Postcard

I bought this cracking postcard, with its rough- cut edges, making it look like an old piece of parchment, from the on-board shop on the Disney cruise ship ‘Fantasy’ whilst I was on my cruise last month. I did not see it in any of the subsequent theme parks I went into after returning from the cruise, so it may well be a cruise line exclusive (although this is not confirmed – although I can say that it was not on sale in the Walt Disney World anywhere, and I did look).
I liked this postcard because it was attractive to the eye, but also because it has the characters, Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Pluto as the appear in the new animated cartoon shorts which are on television. This means that this card could fit very nicely into my television collection as well.

MICHAEL JACKSON ON THE WALL

The Gallery currently, until the 21st October, has an exhibition on which is dedicated to the late singer Michael Jackson. The exhibition’s title is a nice turn on the title of one of his albums, my favourite one as it happens. I’m not interested in the exhibition myself, and I was only a fan up to and including the ‘Off the Wall’ album (what came after was slick and professional, but I was not as interested). But, despite my lack of interest in the exhibit I did like the range of exclusive exhibition postcards. These are all currently on sale (I only picked mine up last week), and I suspect may be on sale for a period after the closure of the exhibition next month, until they are sold out (from previous experience this is often less than a year). I have depicted here all the postcards available, but please note that the price for these has gone up to £1 each and although they still have the offer of buy 5 cards get a 6th one free this offer does not include the postcards for this exhibition:

This is an unusual piece of artwork. When I first saw it, I thought it was just the standard old record sleeve, but its not. The artist has used an old record cover sleeve, but has added to it to make what I assume is considered a piece of art. If nothing else, it makes for an unusual and nice-looking postcard. Come to think of it, the more I look at this one the more I like it.

From the image alone I suspect few, if any without prior knowledge, would identify this as being a portrait of Michael Jackson. An unusual postcard image though, and is it me or does the image make him look like the Medusa?

This postcard image, and the one above, are classic Andy Warhol art pieces and in a style, which is immediately identifiable as being Warhol. So, that completes this postcard collection for this exhibition. I think they have produced some very interesting postcards here, and ones which would grace any Michael Jackson collection. Because they are for a specific exhibition they will have a limited shelf life as well, which will add to their collectibility in the future.

It was the Disney cruise line ship the ‘FANTASY’ that I travelled on whilst doing my recent Disney Cruise around the Caribbean. I bought some superb postcards whilst on board, but this postcard is one I found on sale in the Disney outlet store when I was back in Florida. It was on sale at just $1.99. I suspect it was originally more than $5 when being sold onboard the ship, although it is no longer being sold and was not on sale during my cruise and I suspect has now been discontinued. Copies will be much harder to find in the future, especially as I bought the last remaining copy in the outlet store.

This great Sir Winston Churchill postcard can be picked up in London for as little as 15p (I have also seen it for 20p, and further out from the centre of London for anything up to 40p). Churchill had some great quotes, and this is one of his well-known funny, and derogatory ones.

Superb book advert postcard which has a nice piece of artwork on the front which was the original cover artwork for the books release. I expect this was originally a free postcard, although I had to pay 25p for it from a book shop in London which had a box of postcards by the sales counter, the book shop was in Charring Cross Road, London. I liked the fact that the artist of this this piece of artwork seems to have incorporated postcards within it, which is a nice touch considering it appears itself on this postcard.

I am not sure if the top image was not considered a little ‘risqué’ at the time this postcard was released, which I think was the 1920’s (maybe the early 1930’s, but my money is on the former). This type of postcard was extremely popular in France and the style is quite unique to this country for this time. This is one of many old postcards I bought in an antiques shop in France at the start of the year.

A very seductive kiss depicted on what can only be called a typical French published postcard. If you wanted to send your loved one a romantic postcard then I suspect this would have fitted the bill back in the early 1920’s. Having said that, you might want to place this in an envelope to avoid the receiver being embarrassed upon the postman handing over such an image 9this probably happened as the card has no stamp on it, but it has an extremely long message on it so must have been sent to someone, surely!

Yes, this is another postcard from the French correspondence collection which I picked a number of examples up when I was in France at the start of the year. This postcard, and the one above, are definitely-from the same sender – I wonder if they went to the same receiver? I suspect they did.

I have posted many postcards here relating to the town of Saintes in France. This is because I know it well as my in-laws used to live just outside it, and we still have their house there today. As many postcard collectors do I collect view postcards of places which I am connected to, have lived at or which I have visited. Saintes comes under the heading of places I am connected to.
These two postcards are identical but for one small detail, one is the classic black and white (see below) whilst this one here is a hand coloured negative print version, also called a ‘Colourised Version’. I found both versions in an antiques shop in Saintes earlier this year. I like having varieties of the same card and this is a classic example of a card design being used in more than one way. With the slight deckle-edging this is a classic looking 1950’s era postcard.

This one has been used to write a message on, although it has not been posted with an applied stamp (it was probably posted to someone within an envelope, strange I know, but not that uncommon if the message was something someone did not want others reading or if the sender was someone who was after some discretion). Fortunately, the sender added the date, always useful, and this confirms my dating of the 1950’s era for this, and the above, postcard – 1956. Otherwise this reverse side is identical in printing to the colourised version above.

This French issued postcard (I am sure the language had already given it away) was issued in the post WWI period, it was actually-posted in 1920. It is of a common style of design where a black and white photograph of items laid down against a drawn backdrop is taken with the negative then being hand coloured (they refer to it as being a ‘Colour Tinted’). These were cheaper to produce and therefore cheaper to buy and thus popular with the postcard sending public, especially in a time, post-war, when people were still recovering from the impact of that conflict.

I collect postcards which relate to disasters, both natural and man-made. This photograph clearly shows the aftermath of some sort of disaster although details are not given on the postcard (and may not be known as the display this card promoted is of photographs by unknown photographers. Perhaps the location is also not known. I have discovered that there was a tri-state tornado that hit in 1925 causing a massive amount of damage. Was this photograph taken after this tornado struck?

I loved the look of this postcards image when I saw it on sale in one of the outside gift shops in the Kissimmee area of Florida. This is a nice postcard image, a young girl and her pet Collie dog. There are lots of collie dog postcards from this period and this is almost certainly due to the popularity of the feature film dog ‘Lassie’. This postcard has a very ‘Lassie’ like feel to it, but I can not find this girl on anything which is officially Lassie related, so, unless anyone knows differently, I think this is an Italian attempt to cash in on the Lassie phenomena, and it was a phenomena. Official Lassie postcards are still collected to this day and I have a few myself, but cards like this still appeal to me (and you never know, one day I may find out it is a Lassie related card….)

The launch of Channel 5 in 1997 was much publicised and promoted through the use of free postcards, with versions published by most of the free rack publishing companies of the time. The London Cardguide Ltd were a very good rack card publisher who specialised in producing more unusual designs, many of which have become very collectible, although they were hard to source and have always been amongst the hardest of the UK rack company cards to hunt down. They were also one of the first of these companies to close-down as well. This is a great TV postcard and one with an important modern history TV connection.

There have always been postcards issued for the current pop star(s) of the moment, and these come and go these days at an alarming rate (which means for the last few years postcards of current stars have been produced in far smaller numbers). But, for some reason, postcards related to Jazz music and musicians have always maintained a strong popularity and this type of music has always produced some fascinating and well-designed images. The reasons for this popularity escape’s me as I am not a Jazz fan (as my wife knows because she does like it), but I can see the beauty and work involved in creating some of the poster styled modern images, like this one, so if I see something like this for 20p then I will buy it.

I have loved flying boats since I was a kid and I have specialised collections around the Dornier DOX and the Short Sunderland flying boats. The Clippers are probably the best known of the flying boats as the operated for many years (Indiana Jones flies in one in the characters first film). I have now visited the ‘Forever Florida’ farm, located about an hour and a quarter outside the Walt Disney theme park area. They do escorted-vehicle wildlife tours and horse riding (no previous experience is required, trust me, I did not have any) and have their own zip-line adventure as well. So far, I have done the horse trail, twice, and one of the wildlife trips. The horse trails are great and the whole thing, with about 15mins instruction, lasts some two hours and you get to ride through some very deep-water swamps and flooded areas, which is fun. This image shows some of the drier grassland you go through.
I have had two particularly superb experiences whilst out on these horses. The first year we disturbed an American Bitten which took off in front of us, very close and flew past me. As a birdwatcher this was a brilliant bird to see. This year we were in the woods and saw some white- tailed deer up close. I have seen these deer elsewhere, but it is always nice to see them deep in the wilds of the country, rather than in the built-up areas where they look out of place.

I did this one about three years ago now and we saw alligators, massive orb spider webs (truly massive as they were between threes and completely covering some trees – very impressive, unless you are an arachnophobe), gopher tortoises and the farms cracker cattle (I also saw some Sandhill Cranes, which was a tick in my birdwatching book). The vehicles, as shown here, are weird looking raised boxes which can go through water marshes and over rough terrain, not that it gets too rough as Florida is a very flat state, especially around here. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience, but the horse trail is better.

You can never guarantee seeing wildlife on any trip into the wild, but the farm’s surrounding wildlife area does contain alligators and I have seen them on the vehicle expedition adventure.
The ‘Forever Florida’ attraction is located on a very, very large farm the owner of which bought up all the surrounding countryside and had it set aside as a natural area of wildlife, a piece of natural Florida which was to be left alone. There are some paths through it for the vehicles and the horses, but it is preserved area of natural beauty. If you fancy seeing a bit of the wild side of Florida on a trip, then look up this company and book one or more of their adventures. If you fancy the horse trail I recommend doing an early one when it is not so hot, especially so during the summer.

This is a great appointment reminder postcard sent out in New York in 1989. I picked this up in America on my most recent trip. I am always on the look out for the unusual and this image caught my eye when I was going through a box of cheap postcards at a flea market. Emails and text messages have now replaced these cards, so they are now a thing of the past.

Something about the design appealed to me and sometimes it is difficult to say exactly what it was, but possibly it is the look on the cat’s face! This card was posted in America in 1909 (29th October)

I collect both Harry Potter postcards and stamps (I also have a few wands as well, but that’s another story!). I also keep an eye out for other little intriguing items. This small label was attached to an item of clothing we bought for one of our grandchildren for our recent holiday. I loved the fact that the small brown card resembles the envelope Harry Potter receives in the first story which contains his Hogwarts School acceptance letter. I thought it was a lovely little item, so I therefore have kept it. I will be putting it into my mounted ‘Harry Potter’ display alongside my postcards.
