POSTAL STATIONERY POST CARD

HUNGARY

(MAGYARORSZAG)

70 EVES A MAGYAR RADIOHIRMONDO

(70TH ANNIVERSARY OF HUNGARY RADIO HIRMONDO)

Official plain backed Postal Stationery ‘Pre-Paid postage’ Post Card

I am guessing some of the above details relating to this postcard as I do not have access to information relating to this one, but I think my guesses are quite good. The person who appears on the pre-printed stamp is Guglielmo Marconi, the Italian inventor of radio broadcasting and transmission. The date on this stamp looks to be 1995, so this postal stationery card may be from this year as well.

The postcard depicted above is a more modern design whilst this card here, although a new modern issue, is in an older ‘Greetings From’ style. This has a very attractive piece of artwork as a backdrop whilst the main design has the traditional American picture-filled-letters layout, something which the Americans do really-well, and which is a type of postcard which is almost unique to North America.

The Sierra Club is a large organisation based in America which is an environmental organisation which was founded in 1892 in San Francisco. It is a non-profit organisation with a reported membership of 3 million. I believe the Sierra Club was one of the worlds first preservation organisations. Somewhere in my collection I have two postcard books which I bought many years ago which depicts photographs of American wildlife, not unlike this American bald eagle one.

THORPE BAY

Published and Printed by

COLOURMASTER LIMITED (SUSSEX)

(COLOURMASTER POSTCARDS)

Distributed by

DENNIS BROTHERS, SOUTHEND

Ref: R80491

Such a simple postcard and to most collectors one of very little value, but Thorpe Bay is part of Southend and when I lived in Shoebury (which is the other side of Thorpe Bay) I often used to shop here along the street shown top left. There is now a Chinese Restaurant and take away located here, beside where the grey car can be seen in this photograph, where we have celebrated New Years Eve a couple of times (this photograph pre-dates the opening of this restaurant). The two photographs on the right side, top and bottom, depict scenes in Southchurch Park, which some would argue is not in Thorpe Bay but in Southend itself, although its all part of Southend District. I have boated on the lake that can be seen here, but that was a long time ago when I was a kid. This is a great local history postcard for me and it’s from a period which was ignored by collectors for many years, but which now is becoming more and more popular as collectors like me seek out images from not just our areas past, but from our own personal childhoods.

THE FABULOUS FIVE

WALT DISNEY WORLD

Official Disney World

Not sure from when this card comes from as I have nor seen it on any of my visits to Walt Disney World, and looking at the reverse side I think it pre-dates 2003, which was my second visit, the first being 1993 and I feel fairly confident in saying that this card post- dates 1993 because of its shiny (Dufex styled) surface, and I saw nothing even remotely like this in 1993. It is a lovely theme park postcard and one I rarely see.

TRUE BLOOD

FX FIRST FOR BRAND NEW TRUE BLOOD

FXUK

FOX INTERNATIONAL CHANNELS (UK) LTD

Official FOX CHANNELS (UK) postcard issue

This came out a few years ago and was, I believe, originally a free postcard issued to promote the appearance of the television series ‘TRUE BLOOD’ on this channel, or more importantly, the appearance of brand-new episodes, as they were then. The programme was about vampires and humans interacting and was based on a very popular series of novels called ‘The Southern Vampire Mysteries’ by Charlaine Harris. The TV series ran from 2008 to 2014, so I assume this card came out prior to 2014, which seems a fair assumption considering its claim re brand new episodes.

This is another postcard from this TV Channel which is in the same format as the above True Blood one, only this one is for the television series based on the graphic novel of the same name (although the TV series went off in its own direction away from the graphic novels quite early). I watched the first two series of this, but I thought it then went a bit off the rails. The photograph used here is from early-on-in the television series, series one to three era, as some of the characters depicted here [SPOILER ALERT] …. do not last throughout the programmes run.  The reverse side is the same as the True Blood one above, but with the exception of the programmes name in the main text line.

WINTER AID CHARITY POSTCARD

GERMAN THIRD REICH POSTAL STATIONERY POST CARD

(Semi-Official Card - ordered by the Winter Aid Charity)

This has an imprinted 6+4pfg brown pre-printed postage stamp which has a hammer and sword design by Lothar Wust. The main picture depicts a workman and a soldier with a collection box in the front. The text on the front translates as ‘FIGHT. WORK. SACRIFICE’. The card design was by Atelier Albrecht and was apparently valid for use until 30/06/1941 (although I was surprised about this as I would have thought it would have retained its postal validity if unused, but it appears it did not).

GRAF ZEPPELIN FLOWN CARD

Official Postcard

I have scanned onto my computer the postcards in my collection which have been flown on the Graf Zeppelin, Graf Zeppelin II and Hindenburg Zeppelin Airships. The good thing about these items is that there is a lot of printed information relating to them which allows me to give you detailed write-ups on these items:

German Postal Stationery Post Card posted at Dresden with the pre-printed stamp receiving a slogan cancellation with an indistinct date. The postcard was carried on the Graf Zeppelin on her second South America flight between the 18th September and 20th September 1931. The flight took place between Friedrichshafen and Recife. Card has an applied 2 Reichsmark Zeppelin stamp (SG 444) which was stuck to the card on board the Graf Zeppelin. This has been cancelled with an on board ‘LUFTSCHIFF GRAF ZEPPELIN’ double ringed date stamp dated 19th September 1931. Card has received the violet boxed flight cachet and a ‘RECIFE’ arrival cancel dated 21.IX.31 (day after the Graf Zeppelins arrival).

The card is addressed to MAX PRUSS who was a zeppelin airship Captain and who was the captain of the airship Hindenburg on its tragic final flight.

This penguin parade, when the fairy penguins walk up the beach to their burrows in the dunes, is a local tourist attraction and although you can not see them in this photograph there are boardwalks covered with humans probably watching this very special parade. Because the penguin parade is so popular, probably because these are considered-to-be cute little penguins, there are many postcards sold which depict it.

‘POSTCROSSING’

Now that I have signed up to the ‘postcrossing’ craze, where you send postcards out to randomly chosen addresses across the world and receive a postcard from a randomly picked person also on the ‘postcrossing’ webpage site, I am receiving unusual postcards from all over the world.

You have no idea what you are going to receive, and I think that is part of the fun of this craze.

I will be depicting the cards I get here on the webpage.

“D’Artagnan and the three musketeers set out from his castle of Castelmore in Lupiac, Gers. It will be noticed that their dress and trappings which were the same as worn by all musketeers, are historically strictly accurate. The only difference is that D’Artagnan’s cape is edged with gold braid rather than the silver braid of the other musketeers”

(Text on reverse side of postcard)

I really enjoyed this card, and it was a bonus to receive it after I had received a couple of very poor examples from previous senders (always a risk, and to be fair only one was completely unwanted by me as it was a boring flyer for an event which was sent in an outer envelope, kind of defeated the object in my mind), but this one here is a lovely card.

BRNO

Unfortunately, the applied stickers and stuff covers most of the information relating to Publisher, printer etc – but this is not a complaint as these do make the reverse side a little more interesting

‘Brno’ is a town located in the Czech Republic. The sender has written that this card was sent from there, but no stamp has been applied, and the bar code box has a cancellation applied.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Where the stamp should be there is no stamp, but the sender has written here ‘SERVICE DES POSTES’ which simply means ‘POSTAL SERVICE’, so, this makes me wonder if the sender has access to free mail. Certainly, no postage due has been applied to this card, and I can see no other reason for writing ‘service des postes’ unless free postage was available. Maybe the sender is in the army or perhaps the government, who knows.

For those who do not know, the Old Vic is a 1,000 (1,067 to be precise) seat-theatre, in Lambeth, London. Its proper full name is the Royal Victoria Theatre, although it has been known as ‘The Old Vic’ since before 1880. It is well known for being a not-for-profit theatre and for putting on some well known and some more unusual theatre, with Shakespeare plays being a common production. This stamp set celebrated the bicentenary of this theatre.
