IAN McCASKILL
.. RIP

John Robertson McCaskill

28th July 1938 – 10th December 2016

Meteorologist and TV weatherman

I am a bit late with this one because I missed the news that Ian had passed away. This was a shame as he was a postcard collector himself and interested in the hobby, so, it is nice to put that mistake to bed.

I thought this postcard was a suitable one to represent Ian’s work. The design is clearly based on the film ‘Singing in the Rain’. It was a free postcard for all those who attended the fair it promoted. I think it was one of the nicest of the IPM Promotions cards.

CUBS 100

Across the country tonight (and across the world) cubs from every pack have been out celebrating 100 years of cub scouts. Scouting itself of course has been around for longer, but the version adapted for younger kids, named ‘Cub Scouts’ has been around for 100 years today. My own pack, and the other packs within our district, spent tonight at an indoor adventure playground called ‘The Fun Factory’. So we had several hundred cubs running around, screaming and having exhausting fun.

‘YOUTH ORGANISATIONS (Scouts and Cubs)'

Reproduced from a stamp designed by Brian Sanders and issued by the Post Office on 24th March 1982

Printed at ‘The House of Questa’, London

Ref: PHQ 58( c) 3/82

This seemed to be an appropriate postcard to depict considering today’s anniversary. This copy has the depicted 26p stamp attached bottom left, which has been cancelled with a first day of issue hand stamp for the ‘75TH Anniversary of Scouting – Caterham, Surrey – 24th March 1982’ .

The little boy on the right is wearing what was then the standard UK Cub Scouts Uniform - it hasnt changed much.

This is todays Disney ‘Wonderground’ offering, a lovely image of the character called Mulan. It is the princesses, or female characters, that seem to be the most popular for portrayal on these new Wonderground postcards. This is another quite attractive image (still expensive though).

VIVE GUSTAVE EIFFEL

CENTENAIRE DE LA TOUR EIFFEL 1989

(Centenary of the Eiffel Tower 1989)

Artist – VASCO GASQUET

Ref: M3/37

A large number of postcards were produced for the Centenary of the Eiffel Tower, in 1989. During the 1980’s there was a large number of artists issuing postcards depicting their designs, and this centenary lead to a proliferation of postcards.

This one here is by the artist Vasco Gasquet and it was one of the more unusual designs as it depicts graffiti on a wall.

Although the design is simple it caught my eye, but to be honest it was the reverse side which made me buy this (see below).

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

What makes this postcard extra special is that someone has added a postage stamp and had this cancelled with a special hand stamp which commemorates the Centenary of the construction of the Eiffel Tower – 9th February 1989. The Eiffel Tower is depicted within the hand stamp as well, as a bonus. But, there is more. Bottom left is the signature of the artist himself; Vasco Gasquet. The addition of the autograph adds a nice final touch to this postcard (and what a bargain at just £1, as I found it in a sale box).

RUSSIAN MAXI-CARD

1989

This is my Christmas offering for today, although technically the stamp was issued for the ‘New Year’ towards the end of 1989. The stamp depicts what is known as a Dymkovo Toy, which appears to be Father Christmas riding a horse (SG 6065). The design on the postcard though has what looks like Mrs Claus on the horse with Santa Claus standing in the foreground with his hands on his hips. In the background is a Christmas Tree. The type of artwork used here is quite typical of many Russian designs, many of which are quite delightful. The hand stamp also features the Santa riding image that appears on the stamp, so this compliments the whole design of this postcard. This postcard is now of course 27 years old, which sounds like a long time when you say it like that, but it is still considered to be a modern issue.

A Dymkovo toy is a moulded painted clay figure, either of a person or animal, or both. They are an old Russian folk art handicraft, one which still exists in the village of Dymkovo near Kirov. These toys are traditionally made by women. The making of these toys in the form of a horse goes back to an ancient magic ritual image

VERSAILLES

L’Horloge Florale

‘The Floral Clock’

Published by

EDITIONS DU GLOBE, PARIS

Ref: 56

Floral clocks appear around the world and there are large ones in Geneva, Tehran and Kentucky USA. This one here is from Versailles and is depicted on a black and white photographic postcard which was posted in 1956, from Versailles.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

The stamp used on this postcard is a 1955 ‘Views’ issue 12f value brown and grey image of Valentre Bridge, Cahors (SG 1265). This has been cancelled with a slogan cancellation, which unfortunately ended up being applied at an angle which means you can actually see the slogan part (well, half of it anyway). Nice, simple usage though (and I like used postcards because they mean I also have a stamp collection running at the same time)

Two days ago, I posted another ‘Wonderground’ Disney Mickey Mouse postcard by Matt Hawkins (the one where Mickey has a square head). If that one was unusual then this one is off the wall! But I think I prefer this one over that one. Here you have a’ robot like’ Mickey on a very modern looking piece, I really like it.

HO HO HO

PAUL THURLBY (Illustration)

Ref: CARD:4433

This is tonight’s Christmas offering. I bought it at the weekend in a branch of ‘paperchase’ in Covent Garden. At first I was taken with the jolly looking Santa, which I thought was very topical. It was only later, after a more concentrated look, that I became a little concerned about how Santa was propelling himself across the sky! Well, a couple of days ago, I posted a postcard of Nigel Farage, so why not a flatulent Father Christmas as well. So, HO, HO, HO it is

CHRISTKINDL

15 – 12 – 1976

AUSTRIA

Postal Stationery Postcard

Tonight, I am off to my office Xmas meal, which is a good indicator that Christmas is just around the corner. In-fact we are now in the twelve days of Christmas, so I here commence my Christmas related postcard offerings.

With this postcard it is not the postcard itself which has a Christmas theme, it is the special cancel that has been used on it. The postal stationery card is from Austria and has a pre-printed stamp top right but also has had an extra postage stamp applied on the left side which also required cancellation, thus you have two cancels.

The cancel depicts Mary and the baby Jesus and has the word CHRISTKINDL across the top. The cancel is from December 1976.

CHRISTKINDL is the CHRISTKIND or in German the “Christ-child” who is the traditional Christmas gift-bringer in Austria (and also in Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Portugal, Slovakia, Hungary, parts of France and the South Tirol area of Italy and Upper Silesia in Poland and areas in Hispanic America, like Southern Brazil).

The Christkindl (Christ Child – Gift Bringer) came from Europe in the 16th – 17th century after being pushed forward by Martin Luther at the Protestant Reformation. Many Protestants subsequently adopted this gift bringer (the date of gift giving also changed from 6th December to the now more traditional Christmas Eve). The Lutheran Church thus promoted Christ as the children’s gift-giver with the intention of bringing attention to the child for whom Christmas was named.

The Christkindl is still the main gift bringer in many Latin American Catholic countries but in Europe the figure of Santa Claus has all but taken over this position.

In early November I posted the image of a large postcard depicting a tiger in water. This cheetah postcard was bought at the same time and is by the same artist; Renato Casaro. ANNECY

FETE DU LAC 1969

EXPOSITION PHILATELIQUE INTERNATIONALE

(ANNECY 1969 LAKE FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL PHILATELIC EXHIBITION)

An official plain backed postcard issued for a 1969 International Philatelic Exhibition in the town of Annecy (located in East France reasonably close to the boarder with both Switzerland and Italy). The design used here is simple but is indicative of the style of some modern (if you can call 1969 modern) French postcards. I doubt this one has very much value but I think it would fit well in any cat collection

DEUX SEVRES

REAL PHOTO POSTCARD

Printed/published by

7) Cie des Arts Photomecaniques, 44, rue Letellier, Paris – 15e

Ref: 1599 – DEUX – SEVRES

This is a nice French map postcard with a quite detailed central map surrounded by ten photographs of locations within the area of Duex – Sevres, France. Deux-Sevres is a department in Western France in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.  Deux-Sevres literally means ‘Two Sevres’, as in two rivers, the Sevre Nantaise and the Sevre Niortaise which both flow through this department.

The postcard itself has a deckle edge and, although unused, is probably from the late 1950’s or early 1960’s period. As far as map postcards go this one is a quite collectible one, especially, obviously, in France.

THE MONKEES

Official MONKEES CLUB response postcard

This large A5 sized postcard was sent out to those who wrote into the programme. The Monkees were of course Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, Davy Jones and Michael Nesmith. They were of course a band (American and British members) that was formed in Los Angeles in 1965 especially for a television programme called ‘The Monkees’. The actual programme was aired originally between 1966 and 1968, and this postcard is from the earlier period of this era. Although brought together for television the four members of the imaginary band soon became, a band in reality. They had some major hits as well with songs like ‘Last Train to Clarkesville’ and ‘Daydream Believer’. At their peak in 1967 they even out sold the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

This postcard was designed to be sent out from Los Angeles using a pre-paid postage indicator (used for bulk mail items allowing this to be printed on the card at printing source). This copy here is a mint, unused copy. I believe they were only used in America and as such are scarce and rarely found in collections in the UK or Europe, where the television show was also popular. I had to buy my copy from an American dealer. To date it is still the only copy of this postcard I have seen.

NOVELTY ‘EYES’ POSTCARD

By

Unknown Publisher

British Issue

This ‘Golden Age’ sized postcard was posted in the early 1970’s (it has a 2p stamp on it and the ‘second -   class’ postage rate went up to 3p on 10th Sept 1973 – so although I can-not read the date on the cancel I suspect it pre-dates this date).

The eyes on this animal, a cat I think, are small plastic bubbles in which are moving black plastic discs, so, if you shake the card the black plastic discs move around making it look like they are looking around. Unfortunately, but rather funnily, when I laid this card down for scanning it ended up looking like the cat is cross-eyed! This little beauty cost me just 50p from a dealer and I think it was worth every penny.

CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

CUSTOM WORKS

Novelty Postcard with attached

METAL PIN BADGE

This bright postcard has an image on it by the well-known artist Quentin Blake (2013) who is famous for his pictures used to illustrate the children’s books by Roald Dahl. It is probable that the book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ is Roald Dahl’s most well-known book, it has certainly been turned into two feature films. This postcard depicts a very typical illustration from this book. The clever addition here is the coloured round metal pin badge, which has part of the postcards image on it, showing the character Willy Wonka. The badges illustration, being identical, means that it can be placed over the cards illustration, thus replacing it. The badge is held to the card, just, by a little bit of the type of sticky gel which is used to stick things to the front of magazines for easy removal.

I found this unusual item (packaged in a see-through bag with an envelope – probably because there is no way you could post this and expect the badge to remain on it without placing in an envelope for the trip!) at the National Portrait Gallery, where it was on one of the central display tables in the gift shop. It was £2, but what a smashing, and quirky item. I loved it.

This is a photograph rather than a scan because the thing would not scan clearly.

NIGEL FARAGE SMOKING A CIGAR

Photographic Portrait Prize 2016

Charlie Clift – January 2016. Inkjet Print

Published by the

NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY

I am not one for politics, but I do collect political themed postcards (I know that sounds strange, and I can’t explain it either, but there you go). This postcard here fits into my ‘Political’ themed collection. I found it in the National Portrait Gallery shop yesterday, and it was new to me, which is explained by the 2016 date, so I don’t think it has been here that long.

Farage of course has been back in the news recently, as a direct result of the legal review into the commencement of ‘Brexit’. I saw him on the news looking as cheerful as ever, in fact, much like he does here in this photograph.

So, this postcard is topical, even if it does depict Farage, and, no, despite buying this postcard, I am not a fan.

p.s. Is this the first time Farage has appeared on a postcard? It is certainly the first one I have seen.

THE WORLD OF PETER RABBIT

A BOX OF POSTCARDS

150TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

Beatrix Potter 150 years

Retail Price - ÂŁ14.99

I bought this smashing box of 100 postcards in London yesterday from a branch of Waterstone Book Shops (just up the road from ‘Fortnum & Mason’, but that’s another story).

I have been collecting these box sets for some years now, since they became popular, about five years ago (give or take a year). They are a great way to add 100 postcards to your collection without having to pay out a fortune. So far, I have boxes for Doctor Who, Thunderbirds, Mr Men, Star Wars, DC Comics, Penguin Book Covers, Puffin Book Covers, Vogue Magazine Covers, Radio Times Covers (this box set when one further with 101 postcards)
 amongst others.

Many of the images included here in this box set have been published on postcard before, but not all of them, and this is what makes the set so attractive. Personally, I have collected Beatrix Potter postcards for years and have a large collection, but there are some pictures here which I have not seen outside of the actual books themselves.

Here you can see the front of this box set

PHOTO

Here you can see the range of postcards depicting the covers of the Beatrix Potter stories. There are twenty-three here, all showing a modern styled book covers. Most of the classics are included. These are just one type of pictorial postcard included in this box. These are the covers as issued on new books in 2011

PHOTOGRAPH

Four postcards depicting the original letter with the Peter Rabbit story and sketches which Beatrix Potter sent. Images of these letter pages have been released on postcard before, but they are worth repeating here.

PHOTOGRAPH

A range of the horizontal postcards depicting the watercolours for the stories. These are of course extremely well known around the world and are amongst the pictures which have mostly appeared on postcard before.

PHOTOGRAPH

Here we have a range of vertical postcards depicting watercolours of many of the characters. Peter Rabbit appears top right and top left.

PHOTOGRAPH

Here is a second selection of these delightful watercolours, again, many of which previously issued on postcard.

PHOTOGRAPH

Another range of images. These are the ones which are like a cameo picture with white backgrounds. This was a typical style for many of the pictures within the books.

PHOTOGRAPH

Some more horizontal pictures

PHOTOGRAPH

This selection includes some photographs of Beatrix Potter, which are nice additions to any Beatrix Potter themed collection. There also some of her other paintings which also expand the theme.

POSTCARD

TOP

From ‘The Tale of Mr. Tod’, 1912.

Endpaper used in the first edition

BOTTOM

From ‘The Tale of Samuel Whisker’s, 1908. Samuel Whiskers running. “There has been an old man rat in the dairy – a dreadful’ normous big rat, Mother; and he’s stolen a pat of butter and the rolling-pin”

I have chosen a few of the postcards to show in full, either because they are unusual, or ones which I especially like or have not seen before. This image here, at the top, was new to me.

I also had not seen the lower rat image on postcard before, although I would not be surprised to find that has been issued before.

POSTCARD

From ‘The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, 1906. Mr Jeremy Fisher has an encounter with a trout. ‘A great big enormous trout came up – ker-pflop-p-p-p!’

The Jeremy Fisher story is one of my favourites, if not the favourite, and the pictures from this story are the ones I have sought out on postcard most. Having said that I had not seen this one before.

POSTCARD

From ‘The Tailor of Gloucester’, 1903. The note left by the mice. ‘Where that button-hole was wanting there was pinned a scrap of paper’

I thought this an unusual image to be included and thus one of the reasons to include this set in my collection.

POSTCARD

From ‘The Tale of Two Bad Mice’, 1904. The dolls’ house.’
it was red brick with white windows, and it had real muslin curtains and a front door and a chimney’

This one must have been crying out to be released on postcard but again this is the first time I have seen this image outside of the books

POSTCARD

From ‘The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin’, 1903 The squirrels collecting nuts. ‘This is a tale about a tail
’

After Jeremy Fisher, I think, perhaps, it’s the Squirrel Nutkin pictures which I like the most. It may be because they are more natural as the squirrels are not depicted wearing cloths. As a result, these pictures have a lovely look about them. This one here is a real cracker.

POSTCARD

The cover of Beatrix Potter’s original privately printed edition of ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’, 1901

POSTCARD

The cover of the first Frederick Warne edition of ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’, 1902

POSTCARD

Decorated clothbound first edition of ‘The Tale of Benjamin Bunny’, 1904

Another of my favourite characters

POSTCARD

First edition of ‘The Pie and The Patty-Pan’, 1905

POSTCARD

Deluxe clothbound edition of ‘The Tailor of Gloucester’, 1903. The material came from the calico works owned by Beatrix’s grandfather

POSTCARD

The jacket design for ‘The Tale of Little Pig Robinson’, 2011. This book was first published in 1930

This postcard does appear in the selection of these modern covers included at the top of this posting, but it is such a little-known story, and one I have not read, that I thought I would include it here.

ROCK & CHIPS

Published on behalf of

SHAZAM PRODUCTIONS

Rock & Chips was a prequel television show for the far more well known and loved (and recently voted the No 1 British Television show – i.e. the show with the highest viewer figures on one specific showing – I think it was Xmas day one year) ‘Only Fools and Horses’. This prequel show was set in Peckham in the 1960’s. The series concentrated on the early days of Del Trotter and a character called Freddie Robdal (played by Nicholas Lyndhurst who of course played Rodney Trotter in Only Fools and Horses – he appears on the second postcard shown here – he is the character on the right side).

Three extended special shows were produced and they were as follows:

ROCK & CHIPS – originally shown on 24th January 2010 – 90 minutes long – 8.42 million viewers

FIVE GOLD RINGS – originally shown on 29th December 2010 – 60 minutes long – 5.83 million viewers

THE FROG AND THE PUSSYCAT – originally shown on 28th April 2011 – 60 minutes long – 3.77 million viewers

The first special had a story about Joan Trotter, stuck in an unhappy marriage with Reg, who was lazy and work-shy. Derek (“Del-Boy”) is their son. It is the appearance of a character called Freddie Robdal, a bank robber, art connoisseur and womaniser, out after a 10 year period in prison, who changes Joan’s life. The story also has some of the other characters from ‘Only Fools and Horses’ in their younger years, Boycie, Trigger and Denzil. Another well known ‘Only Fools and Horses’ constant also makes an appearance – the ‘Nag’s Head’ pub.

These four postcards have no descriptive text on the reverse side (or for that matter the front either), in fact the programmes title is not even mentioned or shown in logo or otherwise. Other than the stamp box, address lines and centre parting line the only other adornments are ‘Printed in London’, which appears down the far - left corner edge, and SHAZAM PRODUCTIONS which appears as their word logo along the bottom centre. The programme was co-produced between the company Shazam productions and the BBC.

Anyone picking these up in the future might struggle to identify what programme is depicted. But a true television theme collector would love these as I suspect they are not that common and these four here are the only copies I have found in all my searches through TV card selections.

I bought this ‘Fantasy’ recruitment styled poster postcard on my visit to Dover Castle, an English Heritage attraction. It is a lovely designed poster, with an almost 1950’s comic book styled artwork (I’m thinking ‘The Eagle’ comic here). I loved it and it fits nicely into my military themed collection and postcards featuring warriors of this era are not that common.

‘TRAVEL THE WORLD IN A GLASS’

‘VOTED BEST BEER LIST IN AUSTRALIA’

20+ CRAFT TAPS & HANDPUMP

400+ BOTTLED BEERS

12 WATTON STREET, WERRIBEE, AUSTRALIA

The front of this postcard is simple in design but still manages to be eye-catching (for me the layout and type of text, for many I suspect, the inclusion of the pint of beer!).

This postcard is a promotional free postcard which advertises this award - winning hotel and bar, and although the front is, as already said, simple it was in fact the reverse side which I really liked.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

I previously mentioned that I do like postcards where thought has been used in the design of what is classed as the reverse side of the postcard. This could be the faded, or greyed out addition of another image (or less imaginatively the front design greyed out) on the reverse side. Or the addition of anther picture in full in the message side, or along the bottom (a common addition in some modern German postcards I have). On this postcard, you have an attractive text layout, using the hotels logo, and the rather smashing addition of different coloured passport country stamps. I really like these on this card and I think they lift the design above that of a normal postcard reverse. Well done to them.

CATS PROTECTION

Last week at Cub Scouts we did calendars. One of the leaders brought in a pile of Christmas looking images and other pictures and cards, including some cards featuring images of cats. Amongst this selection were three ‘Cats Protection’ postcards. The cubs were all allowed to choose from the images, and then cut out stuff and stick them to a card which they could then decorate. The three cards here were looking like they were doomed. At the end of the evening the remaining images and cards were collected up, and these three cards had survived
But, I was informed that the Beaver Scouts still needed to do their calendars the next week (last night). So, the three cards were returned to the pile. I was informed that if they survived the ‘beavers’ night then I could have them. So, I attended last night with my fingers crossed but suspecting the cards were now all cut up and adorned to bits of card now hanging in any number of mother’s kitchens!

But, as you can see, “Yay”, they were not to the Beaver’s liking.

CATS PROTECTION

FUDGE was rescued from a rain-filled bucket

“Cats Protection helps over 230,000 abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens every year”

Ref: 995/F/A

‘CATS PROTECTION’ is a charity that, clearly, helps cats and kittens that are abandoned and lost. These postcards, printed on flimsy ‘paper like’ card (not unusual for this type of charity/promotional/publicity postcard because they are cheaper to produce but still qualify as a real postcard, and can be used as such), were free and sent out to people who contribute to the charity, to be used by them thus spreading the word about the charity in question (I doubt the charity suspected how close these particular copies came to being adornments for kid’s 2017 hand-made calendars!!). As I have previously stated I started out by collecting animal themed postcards so I cannot resist them when I see them, especially when they are postcards that I cannot just go out and buy.

Original Artwork of

“NO WORRIES”

By Artist

Nidhi Chanani

Tonight’s ‘Wonderground’ Disney offering is a piece of artwork depicting the characters from the Disney animated film ‘The Lion King’.

Towards the end of International Drive, in Florida, there is an outlets area, where there are stores which sell a whole range of products (although to be honest, mainly cloths, and shoes
. lots of trainers
.. and cloths, oh yes, cloths. I am not one for cloths shopping by the way). Located here is a Walt Disney outlets store which sells older stuff from the theme parks which is no longer sold there, or now dated for a previous year or from a past feature film which is no longer promoted in the parks.

This postcard here was one of five ‘Wonderground’ postcards which I was surprised to find on sale here, at the much-reduced price of $1.99 (a major saving on the normal price of these - $4.95). I was surprised because firstly I did not realise that these got discounted here, and secondly because it is a really nice design.

I hate gardening, but that does not mean I do not like flowers and plants themselves. In fact, my favourite plants are the ones in the cactus family. So, this postcard, when I found it in a bundle of really cheap postcards, appealed to me. It has no real value, but who cares.

GONE WITH THE WIND

Ronald Reagan – Margaret Thatcher

I travel to and from work by train and pass the time by reading. I am currently reading the fourth book in the Peter Grant series written by Ben Aaronovitch. This one is called ‘BROKEN HOMES’. The books are about a character Peter Grant who is a young Metropolitan police officer who discovers in the first book that he has magical powers and that the world around him is not quite as he believed.

I love these books and Ben Aaronovitch (who has written for ‘Doctor Who’ in the past) drops little cult references into the text which I love picking up on.

I read the following on page 227 of the paperback version:

“The narrow hallway was lined with framed photographs while the far end was dominated by a faux movie poster for ‘Gone with the Wind’ starring Ronald Reagan sweeping Margaret Thatcher off her feet while a mushroom cloud bloomed behind them. ‘She promised to follow him to the end of the world. He promised to organise it’”

As I read this I immediately recognised the described poster. In the 1980’s I was a big collector of political related postcards and this image was one I picked up at the time. When I got back home from the gym I checked and there it was. So, it seemed reasonable, if not fate, to post it here tonight (this design was also issued on a postcard, without the red boarder, in Ireland as a propaganda postcard by the IRA, this one is much harder to source, I do have a copy but its buried somewhere in my collection and might take some time to find)

Just in case you had not immediately surmised the obvious, the above design is based on the film poster for the spectacular 1939 feature film ‘Gone with the Wind’. Here you can see the actual film poster on a postcard published by the well-known American postcard publisher ‘Classico’ (a company that sell postcard in both America and the UK).

POSTCARD

GAME OF THRONES

Unknown Printer / Publisher

This postcard features one of the shows logo’s featuring a crow and the programmes titles. This is a nice design which I picked up on a visit to the Memorabilia show at the N.E.C. Birmingham last year. Whoever produces these cards does so in prolific design quantities. I do not believe massive numbers of each postcard were produced as they change and update their postcard designs frequently. I believe the number of different designs is incredible, with probably new designs being released in triple figures each year. What it does mean tough is that collectors like me can obtain interesting designs like this one and the one below.
