This one is quite well known and crops up quite a bit in dealer’s stocks should be easy enough to find if a copy is wanted. This one has been in my collection for a number of years and cost me just 30p, I would expect to pay a little bit more these days.

This month sees the final postcard production and issue by this long running and famous postcard publisher. It is sad to see the company cease postcard publishing, but they have a massive previous output which will be collected for years to come. To celebrate their many years, I have decided to illustrate this, rather tatty, but nice, original sales pack wrapper for a ‘Dog’ series of postcards. Wrappers are often more-scarce than the actual postcards they contain, because they were thrown away of lost. This one here may be in poor condition, but at least it does exist still.

They are items for the true collectors out there who want something which will be an ornament rather than just an item gathering dust in a box somewhere (all collectors have these type of things, I have )

The word ORLANDO on the front of this card is filled with shiny glitter, which does not appear in its full glory in this scan. It is one of a ‘number’ of such cards which have applied glitter to the front, published by this company. I like these, and they are popular.

There was a period in the late 1980’s and 1990’s where the design of tourist postcards was improved, and through this there was a trend to attractively box photographic views in coloured boarders, sometimes with multiple layers of thinner boarder lines incorporated into a thicker boarder. This is a good example of the type using a dark blue boarder with two thin gold lined boarders and a purple thin boarder line as well. Hopefully you can see and agree that this makes the card more appealing, certainly more appealing than just the photographic image on its own would have done. These became more common and the older single view cards with no boarders ceased to sell (and often hung around in sales racks for years). This type of card is also extremely common coming from island resorts and those around the Mediterranean, with Spain and Portugal being big producers of this type of card visual layout. Tenerife is of course the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands (off West Africa).

There is another thing to look out for on postcards posted from such like areas of Spain, Portugal and their tourist islands, and that’s the lack of applied postage stamps but having the postage pre-paid under a private system which has a paid cachet applied and causes the card to then be placed into the countries postage system for delivery. What this means is that you can have your item posted at source without having to source the postage stamp(s) as well. Here the card has a blue ‘A. LAGUNA PARK 1 – WORLDMAIL – CANARY ISLANDS’ cachet and a red official postage mark ‘PORT PAYE’ which is boxed and dated – 21.11.97. Cards used in this way are very common from these locations, but I have still yet to meet anyone who collects these marks, although I am sure there are people out there who do (although I do know that stamp collectors hate these marks because the replace the need to have stamps applied and bought).

It was the date of this dress which intrigued me as it is from the early days of the Second World War and as such it could be considered as an unusual addition to my military history collection. It also only cost me pennies as it was in a cheap box. I think the Museum of Costume is now called the ‘Fashion Museum Bath’ which is still open. Next year this postcard here will be thirty years old, but it is still considered to be a modern card.

I have mentioned before how common these war damage postcards are. Of these, my favourites are the ‘Before & After’ versions like these. Because of the impact of the war on the production of many items these cards often look cheaply made, brown printed and printed on lower quality board (paper and card being harder to source as time went on). As a result of this they are often subject to receiving stains and discolouration, although some of this can also be down to the circumstances around their issue, especially if bought and stored by a soldier. These two here are both unused and the seller (or possibly a soldier having bought them for use) has already used a pencil to scrub out the location of the pictures as printed on the front. This was a censorship requirement, although personally I can not see what would have been gained in this specific case as the depicted structures were well known and could have been linked to the sender’s position regardless. The crossing out of locations was more important and logical on postcards of the smaller villages and towns as it would have been a security risk to reveal that a certain battalion or force was located, or billeted in that area, and this why the names were instructed to be covered over. It was not uncommon for mail to be intercepted by both sides during the war, especially when the lines were moving back and forth or on raids into enemy territory.

Judging from the films depicted on this card – Catwoman (Halle Berry), Shrek 2 (first appearance of Puss in Boots), Spider-Man 2 (I am making an assumption based around the year of release of the other films shown) and lastly ‘I, Robot’ (Will Smith and Bridget Moynahan) – this postcard was released in 2004. The text on the reverse side talks about ‘All the latest blockbusters’, so they must have assumed that Catwoman was going to be a hit – it was not! Postcard that depict anything to do with this Catwoman film are not common because of its subsequent failure at the box office.

The card promotes keeping this postcard and getting it stamped on each visit to the cinema in-order to receive free gifts, which are mentioned in the boxes at the bottom where the stamp was to be applied. If you received five, then your next visit could be for a free family ticket. Part of me wonders if there are any partially stamped copies out there, and if any fully stamped copies were kept anywhere. These would be unusual and far more-scarce than this simple mint copy.

This was a glassed off area of sunken road which the tour tram drove down into to give the appearance of the tram travelling into and through the water. I suspect, having seen other images of this area, that the effect was better for those looking at the tram than for those travelling in it. It must have been popular though as I have seen several postcards depicting this aspect of the tour. This is from the California based theme park studios (which was a fully working studios that you toured rather than a theme park as such, in those days)

Several years ago, at an NEC ‘Memorabilia’ collectors fair I met Ann on her stall where she was selling examples of her work depicted on different things, including this very attractive set of postcards. I was really taken with her artwork and as Pokemon is a television series I could also gladly add these cards to my favourite theme. The cards are untitled but do have full postcard backs.

It is almost ‘Harry Potter-ish’ in its content, but you can clearly see the same artistic style in her work. I shall look forward to seeing what Ann comes up with in the future if she returns to Memorabilia.

(Pope John Paul II had been Archbishop of Krakow)
Pope John Paul II did visit Poland in 1983 but this was between 16th – 23rd June, so this hand stamp does not relate to that visit directly. But, the postcard was issued for this visit as the blue text down the centre reads “SECOND VISIT OF POPE JOHN PAUL II IN POLAND”. The hand stamp date seems to have no obvious immediate link (it is for instance not his birth date). It may be linked to his past as Archbishop of Krakow, but if it is I have been unable to track it down.
I do like the large blue pre-printed stamp design used on this card, and as with all Polish Stationery post cards the design is unique to the card.
The brown text bottom left seems to roughly translate as:
“Fragment of the picture of the mural depicting the wooden church in Bartlomieja 1303 – 1846 bakery”

This one has been in my collection for many years (it cost me just £1 when I acquired it). I liked it because it was unusual. It is also a card which was almost certainly only originally available in the Blackpool area.

A very nice postcard image but a cheap and mass-produced item for the tourists who would flock to the capitol every year. The photograph used here is well constructed and catches the eye and I suspect it would have been a popular souvenir to either keep or send home to relatives to show what they were missing (an age-old postcard tradition of course).

One thing to look out for on postcards from the mid 1940’s through to the late 1950’s (and sometimes outside of this era) is a line of text which looks almost hand written. It is a kind of lead in for the sender, a starter for their written message. Here on this card it starts:

This is another of the cards I picked up from the antiques shop inside the Universal Studios theme park in Florida (I have already posted a Superman, Christopher Reeves, one and a smashing Shirley Temple one, both from the Movieland Wax Museum). These were not cheap, but I wanted some examples of the cards that were on sale here, so, I picked mainly the TV/Film ones. Early western stars like Will Rogers are highly collected in the US but not quite so here in the UK. But, regardless of this fact this is a nice card and one which does have interest both sides of the Atlantic.

From the front this looks like any other Royal Mail PHQ stamp card release, and therefore valued in pence, not pounds. But, this one here is very different – see below.
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
This is the design picked to receive a very special reverse print advert. At the time of this release there was an official Royal Mail children’s stamp collecting club which had a mascot called the Stamp Bug, thus you had the Stamp Bug Club. Members of the Stamp Bug Club at the time all received this special card with an issue of their club magazine. Many of the cards got damaged or suffered from the over attention of the younger club members, but some survived. Some adult collectors even managed to pick up a copy at the odd Stamp Exhibition. But, these are much harder to find than the standard print card version. This is a card which is well worth looking out for.

I have previously mentioned how my postcard collecting was given a boost and early start from a childhood visit to the Natural History Museum, London. As a result, I have always collected postcards related to this museum. This was a recent buy and it is one of many that were issued in the golden age of postcards. This copy was posted from London on the 18th February 1904.

Now, this is an interesting card for a ‘number’ of reasons. Firstly, it is a design which I have not seen before. This came to me recently in a charity lot and as soon as I saw the front I thought to myself “I’ve not seen this before”. Considering how many Disney sections in dealer’s stock, and on eBay I have gone through this is quite unusual, especially for a British release from such a big company as this. It is also a very nice image, all be it one which I have seen in other formats on other cards. But, then I turned it over, and received another shock.

There is also a large block of black which has been placed over what I expect is the descriptive section of text which is normally printed on these postcards in this area, but why you would want to do this I do not know, unless it is done to concentrate the eye on the Oden Cinema advert. I have not seen this on any other postcard, and was also unaware of this advert release. Was it free? Logically it must have been as who would have bought a card with this type of advert on it.
The film was originally released in 1942 but, this postcard here is from the 1970’s era, judging from the reverse layout and printing, and the film was re-released in 1975 so I am going to say that this postcard is from then, or thereabouts. I believe this is a highly collectible Disney postcard and if I wanted to sell this on eBay (I don’t) I bet I could get £6 - £10 for it (especially from an American collector as they would love this).

Really, the text on the reverse side explains all you need to know about this image (except that a double episode story of Doctor Who was filmed here in this area and when I saw the skyline on this postcard it reminded me of that Dr. Who story – sad I know).

This postcard was posted from New York to Belgium in 1921 with the 2 cent Washington stamp being cancelled with a boxed slogan cancel; “ADDRESS YOUR MAIL TO STREET AND NUMBER”, 15 – NEW YORK. N. Y. SEP 18, 1921. This has been nicely used and is clean and well cancelled.

The front of this postcard depicts a building with a horse and carriage outside. But, for some reason there is no text to explain what is being depicted here, but, I assume there must be a link to Vaduz and/or the postal history of the area. To be fair it is not a great photograph, it’s a bit blurred, perhaps not unusual for what I take to be a very old photograph, and has nothing that stands out in it, so surely it must depict something important and relevant?

This is a bit more colourful and gives all the indications that this post card was produced as a special souvenir for this stamp exhibition. The postage paid marker is an unusual oval shape and is unique to this post card. This is a mint copy, but I also have one postmarked – see below

Lynn Tait, who took this picture and published the postcard, sadly passed away this year. She was a massive local presence and had been publishing local postcards for many years. These are very simple postal stationery postcards all from New Zealand during the earlier part of Queen Elizabeth’s reign. The bottom card is clearly more recent in issue to the two above it which can be discerned from the far more modern approach to the design of the pre-paid postage marker/stamp.
These are not really collected by those who are purely postcard collectors and appeal far more to ‘postal history’ collectors, and, also some stamp collectors, who buy them for the pre-paid postage impressions.
What I like about these is that they are part of the overall postcard story and they follow the same design format as the very first postcards issued back in 1869 onwards. These three stamps depicted here are all for inland use only. They are also cheap as well. These ones here cost me just 50p each.

On the Isle of Man stand at the most recent Stampex show I came across this set of four postcards depicting a set of stamps issued to celebrate the famous TT Races held annually on the island. There was a pack which contained the four stamp cards, and information card and a leaflet which advertised the items being sold in respect of this set.
Thankfully the cards have a nice block of information about the depicted rider on the reverse side, so I do not need to do much writing around the people depicted.
At the Stampex show the Isle of Man had a special cachet which could be applied to any items bought at the exhibition. So, I had the cachet applied to all of my cards, on the reverse side. Depicted here are both sides of each card:

This came with the above cards and gives details of the items sold in relation to the stamp set, including this set of stamp cards (top right). If you ever buy a pack of cards and it comes with leaflets or information cards, then my advice is keep it all. Put it together in one place as in the future it is completeness which makes any collection special and it shows that you bought the item at point of sale. Also, if there are any special cachets, stamps or stickers for the location then have them applied as this adds interest and some extra value.

No mention is made of the location depicted here on either the front or rear of this postcard. But, I suspect if you were in New York in the early years of the last century you didn’t need to know this was Brooklyn Bridge as it would have been obvious.

The stamp used here is the 2 cent Washington ‘Shield’ stamp which was issued in 1903. The stamp has been cancelled with a ‘WINCHESTER STATION – NY” double ring oval undated cancel. The card was addressed to London, but no message was written. I wonder if this was sent as a confirmation of arrival by someone. The postcard was after all posted from a station.

What a cracking postcard. This is from the 1950’s and it is a highly collectible postcard. Aviation is still one of the top collected themes, and not just in Transport terms either, so this image would appeal greatly to those who collect airplanes. It is also by the publisher Salmon who are sadly ceasing postcard production next month. They have been one of the UK’s best and most prodigious postcard publishers for many years now and their loss will bring to and a famous postcard publishing story.

These cards are out in Boot’s stores as I write this, I picked up my one last weekend. It is not a real postcard, although it is the same size and the same quality card. For me the interest here is the television connection as Ferne Cotton is a well-known television, and radio, personality. So, it becomes a free item for my favorite themed collection. It depicts a nice photograph and is a nice item, and one which I am happy to place in one of my albums.
More and more collectors are adding these advert double-sided cards to their collections and in the future interest in them can only increase.

Prince Henry of Wales is of course far better known to us all now as Prince Harry. Having heard the news today of his engagement to Meghan Markle I thought I would dig out a postcard depicting him. Although I have many postcards which do depict him as an adult I have decided to go right back to 1984 for this delightful official christening photograph (I fancied picking a more unusual one). So, my congratulations to Prince Harry and Miss Markle on the announcement of their engagement. I have no doubt that it will not be long before the young couple are depicted together on a postcard, and as soon as I find out that one has been released I shall hunt it down and depict it here (I wonder if Royal Mail will issue a related stamp set – they have for every other direct Royal Family wedding – if they do ten there will be PHQ Stamp Cards depicting them).
