NOVELTY ‘STICKERS’ POSTCARDS

SERIE: CARTES-STICKERS/STICKERS-CARDS

PART ONE

I bought a selection of these on my last visit to France and I was fascinated to find what appeared to be matching cards with the same theme and basic shape of the images depicted but in two different styles, you will see what I mean when you look at these cards:

Each individual dinosaur is a separate detachable sticker. I really like these postcards, which are published and issued in France. The selection of designs is quite interesting, with the little twist of the two similar designs for each issue – see below!

New artist, but the same dinosaurs in the same position and doing the same things as those depicted on the postcard above. It looks to me like someone has said to the artist “Here is the previous postcard, we want the same but more detailed”. What do you think?

By the same artist that did the first of the dinosaur ones depicted above. All of the depicted creatures and pictures including the larger three stars top centre, the balloons lower left and the balls being juggled by the clown are individual stickers (it is only the small yellow stars that are not stickers).

There are small differences here between the design of the card above and this one here, and I prefer this one to the one above. Here I am assuming this design came first, but only because of the numbering system. The main differences are the birthday cake in the tent entrance instead of a clown and the inclusion of a bear and a tiger in the train cages (and you know how much I love tigers). None of the little wrapped packages are stickers but pretty much everything else, with the exceptions of one dark green star and the little yellow stars, are stickers.

I will place some more of these sticker cards on the webpage over the coming days, or weeks

Amongst this museum’s extensive poster postcard series there has always been an interesting and large selection of sporting event poster designs. These are always going to be popular because of the duality in the interests. Rugby has its own unique band of collectors and this superb design would appeal to them.

One of the great things about this museum’s long running series is that despite the amazing number of old posters in their collection they have continued a policy of producing postcards depicting modern and extremely recent posters as well. As a collector of London Eye postcards this one was always coming my way.

I have always liked the fact that this museum has never just published obviously popular designs, or ones which would clearly fit into popular themes. Unusual poster designs like this one also make an appearance. Other than the ‘Poster’ theme itself this card would not fit easily into many other topics (at a push I suppose ‘Advertising’ and ‘Transport’ because it is an Underground poster, but I would struggle to come up with more).

A CHILDREN’S NONSENSE ALPHABET

EDWARD LEAR (1812 – 88)

Published by the

VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM

Ref: 085405

In 1988 when the Royal Mail issued a set of stamps for the death centenary of Edward Lear this ‘C is for CAT’ image was used on the 32p stamp (SG 1407). So, when I saw this postcard image of it I was reminded of the stamp so bought this card. I have always liked the work of Lear, both his wildlife paintings and his ‘nonsense’ poems, with perhaps the best known one being ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’, the inclusion of another cat in his work

It has been a busy couple of days on my holiday, so there were no postings over the past two days, but I did attend a great Flea Market and Antiques Centre yesterday and bought some cracking cards (see the facebook page) which I will scan and place on here when I return to the UK.

“Hunters become the hunted, as an angry rhinoceros sends an African safari scrambling for high ground… one of many surprises in store for guests aboard explorers’ launches on the Adventureland Jungle Cruise”

Without wishing to repeat myself, I love this ride attraction as it was one I had always wanted to ride long before ever visiting the park itself. This section with the party trapped up a rotting tree is my favourite part of this quite big and memorable (despite the truly terrible puns) ride.

This is a superb design and if, as I suspect, this was given away free to everyone attending the September 2015 Norwich Postcard Fair then it was also a cracking free postcard as well. The 100th anniversary period of the first world war has produced some really-nice related postcards, but this is the first I have found which commemorates the sacrifice of Nurse Edith Cavell, whose execution by German firing squad on the 12th October 1915. This image captures the sentiment of the period following her execution when she was used extensively as a propaganda tool leading to her martyrdom.

Official National Stamp Collecting Month Postcard

This is an American postcard issued to promote an American campaign to promote the collecting of postage stamps. This has now been an annual event since the first one in 1981 and this postcard is definitely from the early years, if it is not in fact from the very first one in 1981, which I think is a definite possibility. On eBay this card sells well, but I was fortunate to pick this up recently for just 30p here in the UK.

TYPHOON LAGOON

WALT DISNEY WORLD

Official Walt Disney World Postcard

Ref: PC46-DA1015

I spent today at Typhoon Lagoon, my favourite of the water-parks in Orlando around the theme park areas. This postcard is an older one (this copy was posted in 2002) which has not been on sale for many years now. Mint copies sell for £5+ on eBay. Nice used copies still seem to sell for £4+, so it is an expensive card to buy online, but I was lucky enough to find this one on a dealer’s stall at a postcard fair here in the UK for just 50p. Because of my love for this water park I had searched eBay and had seen copies of this card. It was one I wanted, so to find one being sold so cheaply was a real bargain and it again shows why attending postcard fairs can be so rewarding.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This has been used with a great ORLANDO slogan cancellation which reads “POSTAL SERVICE GOES BATS – 2002 NATIONAL STAMP COLLECTING MONTH – 16 October 2002”. As you will have worked out by now I have a strong interest in used postcards with special cancellations, slogan postmarks and general cancels and cachets. This one ticked several boxes.

Hovercraft are currently amongst the most collected of postcard transport images. I believe this is because they have a nostalgic appeal to those who are of a certain age and who are currently in the age range of most UK postcard collectors. With all this popularity they are also the amongst the most expensive of modern postcard themes, especially the ‘really’ early types.

DISNEYLAND

SWASHBUCKLERS OF THE SPANISH MAIN

Official Disneyland Postcard

Ref: 0100-11502

“Past Dead Man’s Cove and a cave full of glittering treasure, guests come upon the salty crew of Pirates of the Caribbean”

(Text from reverse side of postcard)

So, this is from the other Disney theme park all the way across America over in California. Now, clearly, we are in Florida but this section of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ depicted here was the same as the one that was here in Florida. The reason why the last sentence is in past tense is because this scene was changed this year, well definitely this year at Florida but I also think this year at California. This was always known as the auction of the women in red scene, but this year it was decided to change this scene because it was deemed to be sexist towards women through the expression of the sale of this attractive ‘women in red’. You can see the women in red in the centre of this photograph, she is touching her hair and has almost been placed dead centre of the image.

She is still here in the scene, but she has now changed completely and is dressed as a pirate and is joining in with the auction on the other side.

Today we visited the ride in Florida and saw the change for the first time. I preferred the previous version, but all things change. At least this postcard exists to show you what the scene did look like before this year’s politically correct change (I wonder when, or if there will ever be a postcard depicting the new ‘Pirate Woman’ change?).

As mentioned above we visited this attraction today, and this postcard and photograph are from the Florida location version, and it is one of my favourite rides in the Magic Kingdom theme park. It is also a classic ride and one which I do recommend if you come here as a ‘must do’ ride.

DURIA ANTIQUIOR

(1830)

Or Ancient Dorsetshire, a hand-coloured lithograph by Henry de la Beche, was the first scientific attempt to picture the geological past, in this case based on the fossil evidence of extinct species of fauna and flora from the Liassic (Lower Jurassic) rocks of Dorset. De La Beche named the ichthyosaurus vulgaris (1 on the lithograph) which snaps the neck of Pleisiosaurus dolichodeirus (3). Ichthyosaurus tenuirostis (2) is eating the fish Dapedium politum (5). Pterodactylus macronyx (4) wheels in the sky above and the ‘stone lilly Pentacrintes briareus (6) occurs bottom right. The sea floor is littered with future fossils. LARGE A5 SIZE POSTCARD

The text from the reverse side of this large A5 postcard pretty much tells you all you need to know about the image and I love the fact that the word ‘Dinosaur’ is not used anywhere! The only thing left to tell you is that this is a postcard I picked up from the ‘Geological Survey’ shop within the Natural History Museum, London. This used to be in the building that was the old Geology Museum, which I visited as a kid, but now this has been incorporated into the Main Natural History Museum although the old main entrance to the Geology Museum still has the museum name carved into the stone above the doorway despite this now being the side entrance to the Natural History Museum (and this was the entrance we used last week – both me an Jo reminisced about the old Geology Museum which was mainly just your standard rock collection display except for a great volcano exhibit at the back which lit up like lava flowing across the wall).

ZIPMAN!

Zippy from the children’s television programme

RAINBOW

Presented free with

RAINBOW COMIC

Thames Television Limited 1990

Here in the UK the children’s series ‘RAINBOW’ is iconic and was a firm favourite of several generations of kids. Everyone remembers Zippy, here shown dressed up as a version of Batman.

In the 1990’s there was a trend for children’s magazines and comics to often come with free postcards attached. These were rarely printed on good quality board or card, more likely a flimsy thin card, but they have become quite hard to track down nearly twenty years later. This one is a cracker for any television collector and until I found it on a dealer’s stall earlier this year I had not been aware of this one (it is always nice to find an older card for your main theme which you were unaware of).

The thing which can be seen top left is the top of a stamp which has been applied too high on the back and thus folded over onto the picture side of this card.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This has been used with a 20p 1990 issued Royal Mail Victoria Cross stamp (SG 1517) from the ‘Gallantry Awards’ stamp set, but this is upside down and folded over! This stamp has been cancelled with a red DONCASTER MLO slogan cancellation dated 12 September 1990:

RAF FINNINGLEY

AIR SHOW

INFORMATION 0302 771120

SAT 22 SEP

This slogan was in use between 3rd September and 15th September 1990 at Doncaster (as shown here), Leeds, Lincoln, Nottingham and Sheffield, although there are some recorded late usage of this slogan, and some late error applications in black.

The slogan has the reference 4141R in the ‘Slogan Postmarks of the Nineties – Part 1: The First Five Years 1990 – 1994’. For those who collect slogan postmarks from the UK the Slogan Postmark catalogues are essential guides, packed with information (there are five of these, one for the periods up to and including the 1970’s, another for the 1980’s and two for the 1990’s).

ARMADA PORTRAIT

BY

MARC GEERARTS

Printed in Britain for Woburn Abbey by

JARROLD & SONS LTD

NORWICH

 Ref: WOB 104

A famous royal painting which I have seen at Woburn Abbey, although some years ago now. Royalty postcards are still popular although I do not think that many of those collecting them buy those which depict the countries older monarchs from history, which is shame as there are some cracking images out there like this one.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This one has the infamous ‘pen cancel’ which annoys so many stamp collectors, but it is common practice for the UK postmen, and post-ladies, to do this, in fact it is the policy of Royal Mail that this has-to be done. I have also found out that it is done in the US as well. Although annoying for stamp collectors it is also a a piece of mail history as it is the policy and normal behaviour of current postal authorities (although this one is quite a well done one).

DIE BADESAISON IST EROFFNET

‘The Bath Season is open’

Published by

EDGAR MEDIEN AG

This is an advert postcard for a re-showing of that classic film ‘Jaws’. It is technically a novelty postcard because it has a section missing top right which looks like a shark bite. It was this missing chunk of card which first caught my eye as obviously I could not initially, at the fair where I bought this, read what was on the front. When I turned it over and saw the shark – see below image – then I knew this was related to the film. I remember queuing up to see Jaws when it came out and having to queue right around the cinema and then not getting into the first showing with just eight people in the queue in front of me when the line stopped. I then waited there through the complete showing of the film so that I could get into the next showing – with still a massive queue behind me. That was how popular this film was!

By

ANTHONY BUCKLEY

Modern bromide print from original negative

Published by the

NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY

This is one of the new postcards that I first saw this year in the National Portrait Gallery shop. I was, and am, a big fan of the Roger Moore films. He was the first person I saw as James Bond when my late auntie took me to the cinema to see ‘Live and Let Die’, so for me he is my favourite Bond actor, although I am willing to admit he has not been the best actor in the Bond part, but to be fair Sir Roger used to say the same thing, usually with a smile on his face. Roger Moore was a good actor, often underrated (most often by himself with his own comments), but ‘definitely’ a great man.

TRAVEL THE WORLD

THE LION KING’S TIMON AND PUMBA

DISNEY’S ‘BIG TIME’ MAGAZINE

“SUMMER FUN”

Free postcard that came with an issue of the Disney ‘BIG TIME’ magazine

I remember well when there was a period where many children’s magazines and comics came with exclusive free postcards, often attached to the front or back of the magazine via the side staple(s). This is just such a postcard. My copy is postmarked 1997, so this postcard came out either in that year of definitely prior to the date of 20th August of that year (which is the full postmark date).

These free postcards can be hard to find these days as many were used by the children who received the comic or magazine and removed the postcard(s) and either posted them (this is where copies now originate from) or used them as mini wall posters or stuck them down on school book covers or just pinned them somewhere where they would deteriorate. So, good quality examples do not often turn up. This is a lovely example, nicely used as a competition entry postcard.

This is also an appropriate postcard for today as I have been in the Disney World for nearly 24 hours now!

Novelty ‘Sticker’ postcard

Honda Diesel Engine advertisement postcard (yes, really, it is)

Published on behalf of

HONDA

Ref: CP0176

This postcard has five removable stickers attached to the front, each of the two penguins and each of the two rabbits and the big central sun/flower/firework shape. Because of the stickers this fits into my novelty collection, but, and I still struggle with the concept here, this is also a Honda motor company advert! Apparently for their new Diesel engines! See the text on the reverse side of this postcard (image below). Definitely this is an unusual postcard for a motor company topic.

Published by

THE BRITISH MUSEUM

Ref: C/OPB/56

This is an older British Museum postcard issue and another good example of the many different items they have in their collection. I have mentioned before, I think, that religion is a little collected theme, but this does not mean that there are not some very interesting related postcards.

A little while ago my cub pack had a fascinating visit to our local mosque where we were warmly greeted and given a tour which I really enjoyed. Learning about different cultures and religions helps to break down barriers and I also learnt a lot about the Koran and just how important it is to the Muslim religion.

MY BOOSTER IS OVERDUE!

IMPORTANT VACCINATION REMINDER

Ref: Reminder Card Type 7/88

There are a whole range of different pet vaccination booster reminder postcards to collect and these were used both in the UK and the US, and probably elsewhere in the world. I have a small collection of these but this one appealed to me as it includes a television set in the cartoon image. This therefore goes into my TV collection.

This is an example of where postcards were used for a very important service, one which I suspect is now done by email.

DEPECHE MODE

THE SINGLES 81 – 85

Published by

‘LE TERME’

(French Publisher)

Ref: 111

The band Depeche Mode originated here in my home county of Essex, just up the road from me in Basildon, where I worked up until last year. I was a big fan of theirs when they first broke onto the record market and bought all their original singles and their first two albums. I also got to see the original band line up live here in Southend-on-Sea on their first mainstream tour. The original line up included band member Vince Clarke who I saw but who left the band after the release of the album. He was replaced by Alan Wilder who is seen here in this album cover photograph. I know that the band have gone on to massive success both here and in the US with subsequent record’s, but I still prefer the early material from the 1980’s and from when I saw them live.

COLLAGE OF MANIPULATED FILM STILLS

FROM ‘THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH’

By

David Bowie

1976

VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM

DAVID BOWIE EXHIBITION

(EXHIBITION EXCLUSIVE POSTCARD)

Published by the

VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM

Ref: 120111

The collage title confused me at first as initially this just looked like a still from the film, but on a closer look I could see that the image reflected in the mirror is not the pose that David Bowie is ‘actually’ in within the room – the mirror section has been replaced. Also, the actress Candy Clark can be seen in the bath but her breasts, which are on show in the film at this point, have been covered up with a section of the flooring cut away and applied over her body. I suppose this is photography turned into art, and why not.

I remember the film well, although I will be honest and say that when I first saw it I was somewhat confused by the story, but I was probably a bit too young for it then. I have watched it since and although I do enjoy watching it I admit it has its weird sections.

This is one of those postcards which again has multiple themes contained within it. It is an official railway line postcard with trains and carriages depicted so it fits into both ‘Railways’ and ‘Transport’ but you also have a military contact and more specific a WWII commemorative content. These photographs certainly have a ‘Dad’s Army’ feel to them and I think it was this that appealed to me. It is a great postcard with much to like about it.

This postcard was not amongst the cards they found on sale, although the same image did appear on a stamp sheet sold there (which I did depict). This is an interesting display which has film and royalty connections for those who like something different in their collections. CHILDHOOD TREASURES 8

Print Run of 500 cards

I don’t know how this one went under my radar when it was first released, but I was unaware of it until I came across it at a recent postcard fair. I have a nice sized collection of Brian Partridge artwork postcards and I was glad to add this delightful example of his art to my collection.

AVENGERS INFINITY WAR

Character set

Unknown Printer / Publisher.

Issued from Asia

(possibly China or Thailand – that sort of area)

These are not numbered or titled

This was a set of postcards I obtained through eBay. They are printed on superb quality coated board and look fantastic. I loved this film when I saw it, not the best of the Avengers films but a truly excellent wrap up of characters to this point – roll on the next one. I have also found out that the film is being shown on the plane during my return flight at the end of this holiday, so I shall get to watch it again.

Here at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure they have a Marvel Super Heroes area. Yesterday I rode the Spider Man ride again, I have done this many-times before, but I also rode the Dr Doom’s Fearfall, which I had not done before. My grandaughter screamed so much.

(Text from reverse side of postcard)

Dr Seuss books are not as highly popular here in the UK as they are in the US, but they still have a long history and you can still buy them. Over here we have all heard of ‘Green eggs and Ham’ and I was read this book by my mother, but they were not classic stories as such. Although we have knowledge of the books, they are amongst my wife’s favourites for example, and she love’s the Dr Seuss land in the Universal Studios theme parks in Florida, we do not have many other sales items here which relate to the books, so postcards are not often come across. This one here is from the US where the stories have a much higher following and are more highly regarded as classic children’s literature. This postcard is a very nice example of a related postcard and is amongst the very, very small collection of postcards depicting Dr Seuss characters that I have, which I believe are all from the US now that I come to think of it. This is also a topical card for me as we have just been in the Dr Seuss land in Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park (we rode the carousel there and did the Cat in the Hat ride).

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Pre-addressed so that they company could receive your card and donate a book as stated in the descriptive text. I wonder how many postcards they received? My problem would always be that I would want to keep my card for my collection and I suspect you would only have picked up this card if you were either a postcard collector or a fan of the character or the book, but in either case you would want to keep the card, wouldn’t you? So, I suspect not too many postcards were posted – I hope though that some were because it sounds like the books were going to a good cause.
