BONNE FETE

‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’

Published by

M. D. PARIS

SERIES No 3870

(Serie No. 3870)

This is a series of deckle edged early French postcards which each depict a different floral banner with a ribbon and two small birds which, with the exception of the budgerigars depicted here, do not appear to be depictions of actual European species. Although they have some elements of some birds. Two of them look like sparrows, except one has a yellow chest! I have managed to pick up five different cards, all cheaply from an antique shop in France. I depict them all here. They all have the identical same reverse layout.

Not my first posting of a postcard related to this religious pilgrimage site in France. This one is a multi-view postcard made up of images which I strongly suspect were either all or mostly also available as single image postcards. I have certainly seen the painting depicted top centre on a single image postcard release. There is no date on this card and it was not posted so I am left with just the images and the fact that this has a nice deckle-edge to assume this is 1950s – 1960’s era.

NON-POSTCARD ITEMS

BLUERAY – DVD LP SIZED PACKAGEING

WITH FREE 12’ ART PRINT CARDS

I have previously depicted the THOR: RAGANAROK version of this sales item, with its four individual character art print cards. I liked these and am pleased to say that I have come across some others, all of which have four 12’ art cards included in the package. Personally, I am only going to buy these for films that I really like, and don’t already have in a different format packaging, so, mainly this has been the superhero releases and a Star Wars one, so far. I have also seen similar packages for Disney’s ‘Lion King’ and the old ‘E.T.’ movie. Today I bought the Black Panther, but I have also recently bought ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol II’. Depicted below are these three items, in the order I bought them and came across them:

I make no apologies for displaying these Non-postcard items here, but these do include 'Cards' of a type, art-cards, or prints if you like, and it is always nice to add something new to a collection, something which is on the fringe of your collection. I also think these are interesting and I wonder how long they will continue to issue these films in this type of format (hopefully long enough for the Avengers: Infinity War to be released like this)

MODERN RAILWAY ART SERIES

(THE ART OF RAILWAYS)

Ref: AR 04

To cap off todays railway theme it is probably right to include a poster design, although, it should be pointed out, that poster designs from the modern period, the 1990’s and beyond, appear on postcards far less than the much popular and highly collected early and late Victorian designs.

This is a rare example (one exception being the cards of the London Transport Museum who regularly issue modern poster designs from their collection) of a 1990’s basic use advertising railway poster.

I believe these postcards are not issued in a large print run, so may be harder to find than some issues

The early, around the 1970’s, model postcards published by the Science Museum in London are amongst the museums most collectible cards. Those which depict their display models of ships and trains are the most popular and can cost anything around the £2 mark from dealers and eBay today [although if you are lucky they do turn up in cheap boxes as well and are worth looking out for]. This is a good example of the type of postcard they were selling before they moved away from postcards depicting their models and basic displays.

BBC Hulton Picture Library image

Published by

CAMDEN GRAPHICS LTD

Ref: PC 333

I appears that I have decided we are going to have a ‘Train’ themed morning! So, we had a nice painting and a cartoon, so it must be time for a photograph. This nice old 1930 image appears on a modern Camden Graphics postcard. This company issued postcards on a wide range of themes and both art and photographic designs. They are one of those companies which some collectors specialise in despite, or possibly because of the wide range of topics and images issued.

Another railway related postcard but this one is a cartoon one. There are any number of smaller railways up and down the country and I believe most, if not all issue their own postcards. With railways and trains being the top transport collected theme you often find examples in postcard dealers stock at fairs. This is where this card came from. I like cartoons anyway and this is a nice example of a company using a local artist.

THE ‘UP’ ROYAL SCOT TRAIN

By

ALAN ANDERSON

Printed and Published by

J. SALMON LTD (SEVENOAKS)

Ref: 5163

The early 1950’s transport art postcards published by J. Salmon have always appealed to me. They are often beautifully painted, and I believe the designs were exclusive to their postcard issues and are thus very collectible. These were not just randomly painted but were placed in proper landscapes which were images of real locations, as explained in the text on the front of this one.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This card was posted from Salisbury, Wiltshire on 17 August 1953 using both a Queen Elizabeth wilding stamp (1 ½ d) and a stamp from her fathers, King George VI, definitive issue (1/2 d). 1953 was the year of the Queen’s coronation and only the year after the death of King George VI so the use of stamps from both reigns was not unknown.

This year is the 75th anniversary of the Dambuster’s Raid which is probably the most famous raid that the Lancaster bombers took part in although of course they were one of the main bombers in use by the British during WWII. I like the idea of councils and counties having their own digital libraries of local images both old and recent. This type of archive can produce some fascinating images for release on postcard. This little series of three cards produced here are images from a specific archive related to the Second Air Division which was based in Norfolk during World War 2.

I do like postcards, whether depicting posters or photographs which show the involvement of women in the war. These are not as common as those showing the involvement of men, which comes as no surprise historically, but women also played their part.

The stamp used here on this Antique Show postcard is the 1979 issued ‘French Art’ 2f ‘Music’ stamp (SG 2290) which was issued on 13th January 1979. The stamp has been cancelled with a special show hand stamp dated for the event – 25-26 April 1979 (so this is not first day of issue used for the stamp). The stamp depicts a 15th century miniature by Robinet Testart. This is a nice card which cost one person 7.50 euro. I found it in a £1 box on a foreign-dealers stand at a Stampex show last year. This card woud be a nice addition to any 'Music' themed collection, but would also appeal to all philatelic card collectors and with the inclusion of the swans would make an unusual wildlife/bird card as well.

This is a nice example of the type of maxi-card issued in France for every stamp issue. These were produced by several companies in the country, this one by a company located in Nice. The stamp was one from a two-stamp set and has the reference SG 2550 in the Stanley Gibbons catalogues. I am very fond of these French maxi-cards as they are very well produced. The cancellation, applied in red, is for Nantes and is dated 20th November 1982 which my ‘Michel’ catalogue confirms is the first date of issue for this stamp.

ST ANDREWS

Published by

W.S. THOMSON (COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHS)

EDINBURGH

Ref: 704

There is very little information given on this postcard, just the location of ‘St Andrews’. St Andrews is a Scottish seaside town northwest of Edinburgh. Probably best known for the golf course it also has the ruins of St Andrews Castle and the Cathedral of St Andrew (often called St Andrews Cathedral), which is the structure depicted here on this postcard. This is a ruined Roman Catholic cathedral which was originally built in 1158. When the Catholic mass was outlawed during the 16th-century Scottish Reformation the cathedral fell into disuse. Despite it now being in ruins it was the largest church to be built in Scotland.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

As can be seen here this postcard is another ‘Competition Entry’ postcard. I have always liked these because they have been a good source of slogan postmarks. This is because the message side is often sparsely filled with writing allowing a clearer view of the applied slogan section of the cancel. As I have often mentioned here I like collecting different cancels, slogans and cachets used on cards, and I have a fondness for those applied in different colours. Most often of course cancels are applied in the standard black, but sometimes they use Red, Blue or more rarely Green, as used here:

MARKS & SPENCER

GYLE

NOW OPEN

This one here is for ‘EDINBURGH LOTHIAN FIFE BORDERS’ and is in the transposed position, i.e. the slogan part is on the left and the town die circle on the right side, over the stamp. This slogan was in use from the 11th October 1993 to the 6th November 1993 (this was in the standard position – slogan to right side. In the transposed position, as used only in Edinburgh, it was used until the 7th November because here they had a Sunday stamping service and the other locations used [with standard position] did not). All the applications, at all the locations within this period were applied in green ink.

In the catalogue ‘SLOGAN POSTMARKS OF THE NINETIES. PART 1: THE FIRST FIVE YEARS 1990-1994’ (page 76) this slogan is given the reference number 4616t [the ‘t’ is for the slogan in the transposed position].

NOVELTY STICKER POSTCARD

Today is the first day of the FIFA Football World Cup in Russia. There will ‘definitely’ be related postcards issued, probably all around the world, but for the moment I do not have any. So, I thought I would show you this rather unusual Disney – Donald Duck related one issued for the 1990 World Cup. This has five peel-off stickers on the front, four smaller ones, one in each corner and a large central one featuring Donald Duck and his nephews. What a card! This would be collected by Disney, Football, Sport and Novelty postcard collectors. As I have collections related to all these themes it is probably appropriate that this sits in my collection for now.

Finally, good luck to all the teams taking part (England are in there, but I suspect not for too long) and I also hope that the tournament proceeds without any upsetting incidents both on and off the pitch.

This set brings me up to date with the cancelled sets I have so far received, but obviously another set has been released since which I await. There is not much to say about this set as it is a simple concept, five adult photographs and five photographs of young owls. Royal Mail always does good quality wildlife stamps, but the interest here depends on the viewers love of the creatures depicted:

A few years back, when I was a ‘Wildlife Officer’ we had some Short-Eared Owl chicks stolen from the local wildlife island reserve mentioned above. The chicks had been resting at night on a branch which the person responsible had cut down. The owl chicks had then fallen to the ground with the branch enabling the thief (for want of a better word) to probably bag them up and remove them. It is a sad fact of life that bird of prey and owl chicks are valuable as people here and abroad want them for their collections.

There is nothing stunning about this set, but it is a nice one. If you collect bird postcard’s then it would fit nicely with any such collection. Birds are a very popular stamp theme, so the stamps will be popular with that collecting community as well.
