Now, I am not saying I could do better than this Elephant painting, but I’m not sure mine would be considerably worse, after all I do have a Grade 1 CSE in art from my school days. They say art is in the eye of the beholder, but I do find myself wondering, and fearing, what they paid for this Elephant! This is another of the postcards I picked up this past Tuesday on my visit to London.

I was in London on Tuesday to see the new Armistice WWI installation at the Tower of London (see earlier postings dated 6^th and 7^th Nov 2018), but before that started, I had the chance to have a walk around on the South Bank of the Thames. I have walked past and looked at the Globe Theatre many times, but strangely I have never entered the structure and seen that there is a gift shop here. This time I did and found a nice rack of exclusive postcards. I bought two which depict the Globe from the outside street. This one of them

The Globe Theatre is a reconstruction of an Elizabethan playhouse which was associated with William Shakespeare. This recent reproduction is an approximation based on all the available evidence that could be found relating to the 1599 and 1614 building. Everything was done to make this as authentic as possible, and it is considered-to-be quite realistic, but health and safety rules have reduced the customer number from 3000 to 1400. The project to build the new Globe theatre was the personal project and plan of the late actor and director Sam Wanamaker. It was opened to the public in 997.

Someone, I assume Arthur De Bolle, produced this very unusual personal ‘STAMP WORLD LONDON 90’ souvenir. Basically, this is a special postcard issued to celebrate the 150^th anniversary of the Penny Black postage stamp. On this has been applied a special ‘STAMP WORLD LONDON 90’ stamp show promotional sticker which has then had a 20p Queens head double headed (Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria – which was issued to celebrate the 150^th Anniversary of the Penny Black - 1990) stamp stuck onto this which has then been cancelled with the special ‘INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION  LONDON N22 – STAMP WORLD LONDON 90 – PENNY BLACK DAY – 6 MAY 1990’ hand stamp which was in use for the special 1990 London Stamp Exhibition and to celebrate the 150^th anniversary of the Penny Black. This application of sticker, postage stamp and special hand stamp has made this a very special Penny Black anniversary postcard.

These earlier official motor car promotional postcards, which I suspect were originally given out free from motor car dealers and showrooms, are becoming more and more collectible and therefore harder and harder to source. This has also increased their value and dealer cost as well. I paid £3 for this one a few years ago, but I would not be surprised to find it at £5, or more today. These are great and anyone who is a collector of a certain age may even have had one of these cars, or remember their parents owning such a car. This nostalgia is what has helped propel these into the more collectible category.

This is a pre-paid postal stationery post card which was produced for exclusive use at the Malta Post stand at the 2012 Spring STAMPEX show in London. The card could be bought mint or, as here, with the pre-printed stamp cancelled with a special ‘MALTA POST – STAMPEX PHILATELIC EXHIBITION LONDON – PHILATELIC BUREAU -MALTA – 22-25. 02. 12’ cancellation, which was exclusive to this show/exhibition, and only available on this stand. This copy here I bought on the last day of the 2012 Spring Stampex show and, as you can see, I applied two Stampex post-and-go stamps from the exhibition, a sheep one which had been issued the day before, and a Queens head Machin design overprinted ‘Diamond Jubilee 1952 – 2012’, which was an exclusive Stampex overprint for this one Stampex exhibition. I then had these two cancelled with the events special ‘SPRING STAMPEX’ perforated stamp and magnifying glass shaped hand stamp – dated here, 25^th February 2012, the last day of this specific Stampex.

There is every possibility that this usage is unique, and for me this was a great souvenir of my visit on this date.

Early World War 1 German army cartoon propaganda postcard. Unfortunately, I cannot get my head around what is being implied here exactly with this drawing. FRANZOSEN is ‘French People’ and GESCHUTZE means Ordnance. So, the soldier is emptying a sack of French people and their equipment into a basket. Perhaps this means something about the French army being packed up and finished, or put away after the initial invasion, that kind of makes sense, I think. Whatever its full meaning it is a cracking early German issue.

This is a fairly-simple postcard image of the German Zeppelin, but then it is the reverse side which really catches the eye and contains the value. There is a ‘backstamp’ on the front of this postcard which is for Friedrichshafen dated 1^st November 1928.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Postcard posted from New York using three 1926 US air stamps; two 15c value (SG A629) and one 20c value (SG A630), and an additional 1928 5c air stamp (SG A649). The card has a ‘VARICK STATION N.Y 1’ slogan machine cancellation, whilst the stamps have been further cancelled with a ‘NEW YORK’ oval hand stamps dated 27^th October 1928. This postcard was carried on the first United States to German Graf Zeppelin flight and has received the special violet cachet ‘FIRST FLIGHT AIRMAIL VIA GRAF ZEPPELIN. UNITED STATES – GERMANY OCT 28, 1928. This flight took place between the 28^th October and the 1^st November 1928 (the date of the ‘backstamp’ on the front of this card).

These two postcards caused me some issues as I did not recognise the cartoon character depicted. I did some checks and apparently YOUPI is the equivalent of our ‘Yippee’ or ‘Yahoo’.

Youpi is also a childrens magazine which has a mascot character who is a kangaroo, so I assume this is that character and these cards relate to this children’s magazine (or is that a comic? as we would call it) and Michael Guire-Vaka is listed as one of their artists, so now I feel comfortable that I have sourced what these cards are advertising.

I have a fondness for postcard sets, especially the early ones which tell a progressed story through a series of images, often photographs. It seems like a strange topic for a photo-shoot, but the French, and this is a set published in France around the turn of the last century, although I think it was posted in 1919. There’s not a great deal of difference between some of these images and I wonder if anyone missed any when they were first sold, or were they sold as a set only?

ROUTE 66

If you go to the Tab marked up as ‘ROUTE 66, America’s iconic highway’ you will find this design illustrated as the second and third postcard down. The first one is a wooden design (no boarder), whilst the second has the same image but with a white boarder. This one depicted here has a blue boarder. The other two I bought whilst on my holiday, but this one here was sent to me by my postcard friends David and Pat Rye. I had forgotten about this card, but I did scan it when I received it back in April of this year. Today when I was going through my scanned card’s I found this one and thought that I really must place this one on the webpage… it also works well as another reminder for people to go and have a look at the ROUTE 66 selection on the new page

As tanks became so popular in the public eye it was obvious that they would feature on many postcard designs, both photographic and artist images appeared and were very popular at the time and still are to this day.

The Byng Boys, as written on this tank, were the soldiers who served under Sir Julian Byng, Commander of the Canadian Corps from May 1916 to June 1917. He was later elevated to Commander of the Third British Army where he helped to develop and lead the historic tank attack at Cambrai in 1917.

The Elephant pre-paid postage mark has been cancelled with a circular ‘RED CROSS FAIR 2006’ cancellation. There is also a pictorial 4^th April 2006 BANGKOK cancel beside it which seems to also be a Red Cross related cancel. The card also has a large purple boxed ‘RED CROSS FAIR 2006’ cachet. This would be a nice item for anyone interested in the Red Cross, a theme which I know is popular with many people.

This is clearly one card in a series, this being card No 3, with the others I assume continuing the Rule Britannia verses. The person depicted, although not named, probably because at the time, during the First World War he would have been instantly recognisable to those buying this card, is Admiral Jellicoe who commanded the Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland in May 1916.

This is a much older modern Imperial War Museum issue, one long out of print. The Tank was of course an invention of the First World War and this example, held by the museum, is of the type and shape which we associate with this conflict.    

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Although this layout is quite a dull one in appearance, it is the type which you need to look out for as these are from the earliest modern period of postcard issue by this popular museum. Any cards with a reverse like this should cost over £1 each (often £2+). They are, depending on the subject matter depicted, amongst the most collectible of their cards.

I have previously depicted a very rare copy of this card with the original applied event cachet – if you are interested in reading about this one check-out the ‘December Blogs 2017’ Tab and then the ‘December 2017 Blog 5’ Tab and tab down to the date of 30/12/2017.

Although the previously depicted version is rare and quite expensive this mint front copy would be just 50p and can often be sought out, although they are getting a little harder to find with time. This particular-copy has an interesting reverse side as you can see below.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE COPY

This nice Christmas stamp has been cancelled with a ‘BIPEX 79 – NOVEMBER 22 – LONDON SW’ special hand stamp. This missed the first day of issue for the stamp by one day as this was issued on the 21^st November. This BIPEX 79 special hand stamp was in use from the 21^st to the 24^th November, every day of the show, BIPEX being the BRITISH INTERNATIONAL POSTCARD EXHIBITION’, and event which was held yearly throughout this period.

If you have or do check out the previous posting as mentioned above you will see that the previous design had the misprinted pink around the doves, a listed variety. This one depicted here has the correct Dove printing.

Despite the clear European look and content of these images the cards were produced for sale in the US. This is clear from the details of postage rates required that is printed in the stamp box on the reverse side (see below). I wonder if they were designed to appeal to the large immigrant population that had taken up residence in the US during the late 19^th and early 20^th century. They may of course have been produced by someone who had moved to the US and was producing these out of a remembrance from where they had come from. The designs may even be from older European images, even older postcards perhaps. There is also a Father Christmas design in this same format which I obtained at the same time, but I am saving this one for depiction during the run up to Christmas in December.

The ‘Picturegoer’ series was a long series of publicity and promotion photographs of actors from the world of film, and television. This postcard here is from my ‘Television’ collection as John Richard Basehart (31^st August 1914 – 17^th September 1984) played the part of Admiral Harriman Nelson in the series ‘Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea’, a programme which I loved as a kid. So, when I saw this postcard it was another card that I had to have in my collection.

This set of five PHQ cards as a single five card set is quite cheap, it can be picked up for around £1 to £1.50 as a mint set (sometimes even cheaper if found in a dealer’s cheap box, but £1 is a reasonable price). Far less often they can be found, like this, as sealed unopened packs. Mind you, you have to be quite a serious collector to want this kind of unusual packaged full set of 20, with 20 of each individual card individually sealed in packs of 20, but I like this kind of thing. I think it is something different to show you.

The number of postcards on sale in the Tate Modern gift shop is extensive, and although some remain on sale for many years (I still recognised the odd one from when I visited the old Tate Gallery as a school child) others come and go with some rapidity. This one I found when I visited the Tate Modern on Tuesday, two days ago. Some, possibly even myself, would question as whether this is art or just a model, but regardless of anyone’s opinion I still like these bears.

This would have been an interesting postcard in-its-own right as Churchill is a popular theme amongst collectors, but this card also has the 1974 Jersey 20p birth centenary of Winston Churchill stamp (SG 114) applied to the front. This stamp has been cancelled with a special first day of issue – 31^st July 1974 – cancellation ‘WINSTON CHURCHILL CENTENARY 1874 – 1974 – THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION - JERSEY, CHANNEL ISLANDS’. The addition of this stamp turns this card into a maxi-card.
