HAMPTON COURT PALACE

Published by

VALENTINE & SONS LTD, DUNDEE AND LONDON

Ref: 222025

Five photographs of Hampton Court Palace contained on a ‘multi-view’ postcard printed in a sort of sepia brown colour (a not uncommon colour for postcards from the late 1940’s into the 1950’s and beyond).

Here you have; top left – East Front showing Gardens; top right – The Gardens; bottom left – The Fountain; bottom right – Hampton Court Palace (if I am right this is the main entrance – known as the Great Gatehouse) and in the centre – The Queens Drawing Room.

The Palace has a long history, which is far too long to list here but it is open to visitors and you can obtain all the details you wish from a personal visit (or cheat, as it is all on the internet anyway!)

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

WALT DISNEY WORLD

I have previously posted some artist drawn pictures of the displays along the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean ride so I thought it time to now post some photographs of the displays also available on postcard. All of the postcards shown here have a perforated edge along the top or left side depending on the image (Vertical=top, Horizontal=left side). They all have the same reference number; 0111-0079 so are all from the same postcard book.

I shall type out all the text from the reverse side of these cards as these are all different and describe, in ‘Disney’ speak what is depicted.

FAR LEFT:-

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

Adventurous visitors to Caribbean Plaza enter Walt Disney World’s swashbuckling PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, for a journey back to the days of scurvy, buccaneers and buried treasure”

NEAR LEFT:-

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

“Avast mateys! The plunder almost surpasses the rum”, a swashbuckling pirate shouts as he and his shipmates merrily loot and burn a captive city in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN”

TOP:-

YO-HO, YO-HO, A PIRATE’S LIFE FOR ME

Swashbuckling pirates “strike up a tune” while their shipmates burn and loot a captured city in Adventureland’s exciting PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN”

BOTTOM:-

WHERE BE THE TREASURE

Buccaneer raiders dunk captured citizens in an attempt to learn where the town’s treasure is hidden. It’s just one part of the action at Adventureland’s PIRATE OF THE CARIBBEAN”

(This storyline was later changed to pirates trying to find the location of Captain Jack Sparrow when the ride was updated to include the character from the films)

TOP:-

WHERE BE THE PRETTY LASS?

“A terrified maiden hides in a barrow while a scurvy seadog displays the spoils of the plunder at Adventureland’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN”

(Again this was changed when the ride was updated to include the character Captain Jack Sparrow as it is now his head that comes up out of the barrow instead of that of a maiden. This change now makes images like these historic and of greater interest to collectors)

BOTTOM:-

A PRIVATEER’S PARTY

“Lost forever in deep dark caverns, two souls have all the ‘comforts’ of home at Adventureland’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN”

(I remember this tableau from my early visits but I think it was removed when the ride was updated to include Captain Jack Sparrow as I do not remember seeing it on my last couple of visits – I shall check again when I visit in November)

TOP:-

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE

“Pirate rogues, caught looting and burning, try to entice the dungeon master’s dog to bring them the key to their jail … all part of Adventureland’s swashbuckling PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN”

(Without a doubt the most iconic tableau from the Pirates ride, and the most well-known individual scene connected to this attraction. It is also a scene that was almost exactly, except for the inclusion of Jack Sparrow, inserted into the first ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ feature film)

BOTTOM:-

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

While a captured guard looks on, drunken pirates find the rum more intoxicating than the golden plunder as they celebrate the capture of a seacoast village … all part of the action in Adventureland’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN”

(All the drunken pirates have now gone, as has the tied up guard on a chair on a table centre right. Now you get Captain Jack Sparrow sat on a throne like chair singing “Yo-Ho-Ho” amongst all the treasure – another tableau that has changed as a result of the popularity of the feature film and the desire of Disney to place the character in the ride. This is a sort of twisted logic as the ride came first, and the film was based on the ride, and the most popular aspect of the film was Captain Jack Sparrow, who was not taken from the ride, but who, because of the film, is now a major component of the ride)

INDIA POSTAL STATIONERY CARD

SGPEX ’76 – CALCUTTA G.P.O. special handstamp

I bought this because it looked to me, from the design on the far left of the special hand-stamp that this looked to be scout or/and guides related. Maybe it was a special camp or stamp/guide related exhibition? When I got home I ran some internet checks and was happy to find that I was right. The ‘SGPEX’ stands for ‘Scout Guides Philatelic Exhibition’, and this 1976 exhibition was held in Calcutta. So, a nice buy for 10p.

RUMANIA

POSTA ROMANA

Published by

ART DESIGN (Box 7763, Bucharest)

This is a nice series (incomplete I think – as there are stamps in this set which feature the American Bald Eagle, Spotted Owl and wolf) but it has provided me with some interesting questions. The hand stamps applied here are obviously designed to be connected to the animals depicted on the stamps and the cards pictures, but, the cancels have different dates, well, some of them do. They are dated between the 15th July 1993 and the 17th July 1993. So different dates. But not first day of issue cancels as the stamps came out in 1992, and these are all from 1993. So, why were these, admittedly lovely, postcards issued? And what do the cancels on the stamps relate to? Anyway, what-ever the reason I liked them.

URSUS ARCTOS

BROWN BEAR

(9L stamp – SG5480)

Is it me or is this bear smiling a little? The picture on the postcard looks a little unnatural as I am sure bears do not smile like this. Regardless of this painting the combination of the bear stamp, bear cancel and the postcards image is quite attractive. The cancel here is dated 15th July 1993.

HAEMATOPUS BACHMANI

AMERICAN BLACK OYSTERCATCHER

(10L stamp – SG5481)

The picture here is much better than the bear one, although the picture in the cancel is not quite so good. We have Oystercatchers in the UK but they are black and white here. I see these often as there are lots just off the coast in my home town. I have never seen these all black ones shown here though. The date on this cancel is the 16th July 1993.

ODOCOILEUS VIRGINIANUS

WHITE-TAILED DEER

(30L stamp – SG5483)

The painting on this postcard makes the deer look a bit ‘Bambi-ish’, if you can see what I mean. I assume, or perhaps hope, that the artist is trying to show a young white-tailed deer here rather than an adult, because if this is an adult it has HUGE ears. The image on the stamp is a photograph of an adult and an adult deer is depicted, rather well I thought, in the cancel. Here the cancel date is the 17th July 1993

ALCES ALCES

ELK

(55L stamp – SG5484)

That’s better, a nice picture on the stamp, the postcard and within the cancel. This is perhaps my favourite of the cards (although it could be tie with the Oystercatcher one). All of these cost me just 50p each and were a bargain I thought. I just need to find out if there are cards for the American Bald Eagle, Spotted Owl and the wolf. The date on this cancel goes back to the 16th July 1993.

WONDERGROUND GALLERY

THE ART OF DISNEY THEME PARKS

Original Artwork by artist Dave Perillo

I have mentioned the ‘Wonderground Gallery’ Walt Disney postcards before and have posted a few as well. Whilst I was in Florida last year I found my first examples of these and bought quite a few (despite their very high cost - $4.95 each before tax).

One of the bonuses of these postcards is that occasionally the artist themselves attends the shop and signs postcards for those buying their designs. This is all done for free but then the sales of their designs are probably increased by their presence.

Whilst I was there the artist Dave Perillo was present. From what I saw he signed a lot of postcards and obviously I was not going to miss out on this opportunity to add something different to my ‘Disney’ collection. So here are the four cards that Perillo had designed and which were on sale that day.

A LAND OF ADVENTURE

EXPERIENCE A LAND OF ADVENTURE ONBOARD A JUNGLE CRUISE

This is the first of the four postcards and the first one signed. It shows a design based on the famous, and very old, ‘Jungle Cruise’ ride (one of my favourites because as a child it was one ride that always appeared on the television programmes that visited and filmed here almost yearly). From this design you get a feel for the style of Perillo. When Perillo signed the cards he also drew a little mickey mouse face, made up of three black dots – on all four (actually five – but I will explain in a minute) of the cards signed by Perillo he placed the signature in the bottom right corner. The postcards have no printed signature.

The signature with the Mickey Mouse head logo of three dots - enlarged from above postcard

A LAND OF ADVENTURE

EXPERIENCE A LAND OF ADVENTURE ONBOARD A JUNGLE CRUISE

Perillo signed on at least two days whilst I was in Florida and I was present on both occasions. On the second I bought just the one card – the Jungle Cruise one again. If you look at the added signature, in the bottom right corner you will notice that this one does not have the added mickey mouse shaped three black spots – this because of what Perillo placed on the reverse side of this particular card – see below.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This time Perillo took the card and on the reverse side drew a little sketch and signed underneath it. The little sketch was also dedicated to me. I thought this was very kind and it added a little something different to the postcard. I suspect it also makes the card very collectible.

BOAT TOURS DEPARTING DAILY

SMALL WORLD TRAVEL – BOAT TOURS DEPARTING DAILY

This design is based on the ‘It’s A Small World’ ride which is one of the most famous divisive of ries in the park because you either love or hate it. I think it is the song, which plays throughout the ride and which really gets into your head.

ARTIST SIGNED ON THE FRONT

THE TRIP OF TOMORROW, TODAY!

CLIMB SPACE MOUNTAIN VIA ROCKET – TAKE A TRIP OF TOMORROW …TODAY!

Clearly based on the ‘Space Mountain’ ride which is in the Tomorrowland area of the Magic Kingdom park. This is another old and popular ride and a favourite of my younger two kids (although both are now in their mid-twenties – although that changes nothing).

ARTIST SIGNED ON THE FRON

YOUR DOOM BUGGY AWAITS

YOUR DOOM BUGGY AWAITS…THE HAUNTED MANSION GHOST TOURS

Without wishing to sound repetitive, I also really love this ride as well (my love of all four of these rides – even the ‘it’s a Small World’ one – probably explains why I liked this set of four postcards so much). This one is actually my favourite of the four designs (although clearly I love the sketch on the back of the Jungle Cruise card above).

ARTIST SIGNED ON THE FRONT

So there you have the four ‘Poster’ styled like designs by Dave Perillo. These are actually quite representative of the output of Wonderground and show how they use different artists to produce images in different styles but all relating to either Disney characters or other Disney related licensed products like Star Wars or Marvel. These are worth looking out for but on eBay cost at least £6+ (I have seen the Star Wars ones at £19+)

PRINCE OF WALES

INVESTITURE 1969

Published by

DENNIS PRODUCTIONS (Scarborough)

Ref: 90

Top Left – Conway Castle, Top Right – Harlech Castle, Bottom Left – Caernarvon Castle, Bottom Right – Cardiff Castle.

The 1969 investiture of Prince Charles as the Prince of Wales was a huge television event and a national major event. As result a large number of postcards were issued and they were extremely popular and as a result many still turn up and they are relatively cheap even now, forty-seven years later. This particular design is on a smaller (golden age size as it is called) sized card than the larger modern size which most people are now used to. Although no royal family member is depicted here this card would still grace any royalty themed collection.

A WOMAN’S PLACE IS IN (her home) PARLIAMENT

Democracy5050

After more than a century with the right to vote, women are still greatly under-represented in parliament

True democracy requires equal representation

Find out how a 50:50 parliament can be achieved”

I like the way they have used an old postcard design here and took its era defining sexism and have turned it around on its head to promote a program to increase the number of female representatives in the Australian Parliament. What can be better than an old postcard design appearing on a new postcard and being used for the opposite reasons that the original came out for.

VIEW FROM PIER, SOUTHEND-ON-SEA

Unknown Printer / Publisher

Ref: 25074

The perspective on this photograph gives the false impression that the roofed area, which takes prominence through the centre of this image, is actually much longer than it really was. This is actually the covered area leading from the road through to the seafront end main building entrance.

The pool that can be seen on the right side is actually the area where the Golden Hind replica was later placed (although this has since gone and this area has been turned into an amusement arcade, the pool obviously long gone). If you see this image from the other end, looking out to sea, you realise the true length of this covered area.

PHOTOGRAPH

In this photograph you can see the length of the roofed strip leading out to the main building through which you went to access the main pier block.

LIVE AND LET DIE

James Bond Film Poster

Published by

VINTAGE MAGAZINE Co

Ref: JB3

(From a large series of James Bond Film Poster postcards)

‘Live and Let Die’ was the very first James Bond film I ever saw. Me, I was ten years old at the time, and my younger brother Andy were taken to the cinema by our auntie, the only time we went with her, to see the film. This was because she was a big Roger Moore fan. I really enjoyed the film and became a fan immediately although I was unaware at that point that there had been previous Bond films starring other actors (but mainly of course Sean Connery – I later saw the premiere of ‘Dr No’ on television, but that was several years later after watching several Roger Moore films – this is why Roger Moore is my favourite ‘Bond’). Everything about this film appealed to me, the speed-boat chase, the bus chase, the gadgets and, most of all, the theme song. The song ‘Live and Let Die’ was of course performed by the band ‘Paul McCartney & Wings’ – I still think it is one of the best Bond themes.

AGINCOURT

Photographed, Printed and Published by

Wm. May & Co., Ltd., 45 High St., Aldershot

Not a lot to say about this postcard, but the photograph is clearly one taken at a re-enactment of this famous battle. The Battle of Agincourt was an English victory in what was called the ‘Hundred Years War’ and took place in France on Friday 25th October 1415 (a day you might remember from Shakespeare’s ‘Henry V’ play as being ‘Saint Crispin’s Da’ – the battle of course is the centerpiece of this famous play which was filmed twice, with Laurence Olivier in the lead role in 1945 and Kenneth Branagh in 1989). In the battle itself the numerically superior French army was beaten with the help of the English longbow which was present in large numbers. Henry V lead his troops and participated in hand-to-hand fighting (as depicted in both films) and came out of the battle the victor and the victory lead directly to Henry V marrying the French king’s daughter (their son later became Henry VI of England and Henry II of France).

POLISH POSTAL STATIONERY POSTCARD

‘POMOC DROGOWA’

(translates as “Roadside Assistance”)

POLSKI ZWIAZEK MOTOROWY

(translates as “Polish Motor Association”)

As with the previously posted fire service postal stationery postcard (see earlier post) I do not know what the reason was behind this issue, except for the fact that it relates to the Polish Motor Association – was it an anniversary? What-ever the exact reason for its issue it makes for a nice transport related postcard.

FRED GWYN

THE CLOWN PRINCE of Comedians”

Suitable for All Functions

196 HEADSTONE DRIVE, HARROW, MIDDX

A private issue advertising promotional postcard for a comedian/clown based in the Harrow area. This might be of interest to a local Harrow collector or anyone who knew or was related to Mr. Gwyn. So far I have been unable to definitely identify any exact details relating to Mr. Gwyn but there is one tantalizing little bit on the internet which is a request by someone for information about their grandmother’s cousin, with whom they had lost contact. This was a Fred Cheesman, also known as Fred Gwyn and as ‘Dimples the Clown’ who apparently lived in the Harrow area. Could this be the same person? Could the Fred Gwyn depicted here be the same Fred Cheesman mentioned in this request? I don’t know but I have responded to the request and await the response.

BELCHAMPS

SCOUT ACTIVITY CENTRE

(Hawkwell, Essex)

100 Years of Cub Scouts weekend camp

The reason why I am watching the highlights of the official Queens 90th Birthday celebrations is that I have been camping all weekend with my cub pack. Many official 100 years of Cub Scout events were held over Essex this weekend (although the packs down in my area were the only ones, apparently, who had an overnight camping event into Sunday from Friday night).

Around 300 leaders and I dread to think how many cubs spent a fun packed two days of activities and injuries, none of which ruined the weekend – even rain failed to do this.

This was my first camp at Belchamps for a number of years as we have not camped here for some time, this is mainly because it is so near to us and is our local official campsite, and as with many things which are easy to access we also neglect it and try and be more adventurous and travel out further. This is a real shame.

This photograph here is from the sites ‘Camp Fire’ circle where many official event camp fires, including one Saturday night, are held.

The Belchamps scout campsite (which is how I will always remember this place) has been around for many years and pre-dates my scouting years by many decades. I have been camping and visiting here for nearly 43 years. I did my first weekend camp here and my first patrol ‘10 day’ camp here, which I organized myself as Patrol Leader. We received a ‘Camp Warden’s Commendation’ certificate that camp because we helped out twice when torrential rain flooded out other camps during the 10 days and we assisted moving cubs and belongings up to dry land and inside buildings (we were at the top of the hill and despite water flowing through our camp and tents we never got really flooded out – other sites were under two feet of water – every so often Belchamps does flood and it can be very exciting!! I have suffered it four times in 43 years).

This postcard shows the fairly new cabins at the top of the field behind the camp fire circle (top right) and the main entrance office (top left) which has changed little, although that is a newish door to the original one when I was younger.

There has been climbing at Belchamps for as long as I can remember. There used to be an indoor purpose built climbing wall (it is in the building that appears in the bottom left photograph on the above postcard – the building is in the distance behind the tents). But, this was labelled as unsafe structurally a few years back. It is a shame as I learned to climb as a young scout here and was later an instructor and was a member of a club that climbed here every Wednesday night as an adult. I also trained some of the other instructors and enjoyed those days. The climbing wall depicted here is the much newer (but still some years old now) outdoor climbing wall and the high wire ‘Leap of Faith’ activity area.

There are a number of out buildings and camping huts around the campsite and these can be booked for stays. There are also areas where you can do air-rifle shooting, archery and wooden tunnel caving (much of this is arranged the buildings depicted here in the bottom right photograph which shows huts in the snow – apparently the shop staff call this the ‘Winter Card’).

None of the cards shown here are numbered or titled but there are six in all in the current range available. They are nice to find because many locations no longer really issue postcards as the sales of these have dropped off despite there being a collector’s circle of people who acquire scout related items, including postcards. The pricing here is nice as well, if also a little idiosyncratic – cards are 20p each or you can buy a full set of six designs for 50p (yep, that’s not an error – one card=20p, six cards=50p)

When I was a younger visitor and camper here there was the climbing wall and an assault course – these days there are any number of adventurous and fun activities which campers can take part in including water based bubbles which you can walk about on water in and bouncy castles and balancing bouncy games. The top right image again displays the ‘Leap of Faith’ on the high wire activity which also appears on an above postcard, but it is nice to see that it is a different picture.

A slightly more unusual postcard to end the selection of six available but considering that scouting camping is, and was designed to being young children from inner cities and towns into contact with the countryside and the wild then perhaps it is not so strange. When I was younger and only collecting wildlife postcards this would have been the only one I would have bought. A nice one to round of the cards bought (although the grey squirrels are a pain as they creep into tents and eat any food left out and opened!!!)

HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II

21st April 2016

90th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Published by

JUDGES SAMPSON Ltd

Ref: C-51092

This weekend I really did need to post at least one postcard relating to Her Majesty the Queen as there were a number of special official 90th Birthday celebrations held this weekend (the highlights of which are on television – BBC 2 – as I type this). Although this postcard here celebrates her actual birthday – 21st April 2016 – it seemed more than appropriate. I also only found it last weekend when I was on my London Dr Who walking tour – so it was new to me and I suspect has only been around a few months (unless anyone knows that it was released well before the day)

INDIA POSTAL STATIONERY POSTCARD

Tiger Pre-Printed Stamp

Very simple standard postal stationery postcard with standard tiger stamp pre-paid stamp design. Although I do have an interest in pre-paid stationery cards it was actually the rather nice ‘Flower’s Day’ special cancellation which caught my eye. The cancellation, from Calcutta – dated 10 - 2 – 95 – has a nice flower drawn within it and is mounted on top by a butterfly (so two themes covered there). All in all, a nice little item which would be mostly of interest to philatelic collectors

MAN ON A MOTORCYCLE

Black and white Photograph

Printed by

K Ltd

It used to be common for people to take their photographs, family images, studio portrait’s or other personal pictures and have these produced as postcards. These were sent to family members and friends and usually a copy was maintained in the family album. Clearly most of these are of little value or interest, outside of those searching their own family history. But, sometimes there can be an interesting social history angle, the clothes worn, any uniform worn, equipment being used or as in this case a form of transport. As we know, Transport is a very popular theme and motorcycles are not an uncommon addition to these personal styled postcards. So although I have no idea who this is, and there is absolutely no information contained on the back, or the front (outside of the motorcycles registration number – PK619) this can still be collectible because of the motorcycle – having said that I have no knowledge about motorcycles at all so have no idea what type of ‘bike’ this is – can anyone help?

(still a bargain at 10p though)

(The Brawl)

Painting by

Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier

(21st Feb 1815 – 31st Jan 1891)

Postcard Published by:

Eyre & Spottiswoode, Ltd., Woodbury Series

No. 3499

This copy is postmarked 4th October 1911

Meissonier was a French painter and sculptor who worked on military pieces including armies and Napoleon himself. He also documented many sieges and military manoeuvres and enjoyed a great success during his own lifetime and was acclaimed for his craftsmanship and fine minute detail. Because of his popularity his work was expensive and he bought a great mansion in 1846 in Poissy.

I have not really approached the world of art yet (although some modern pieces have appeared here and the odd older painting – If you do not include the portraits from the National Portrait Gallery of course of which a number have been posted) which is unusual as probably the theme of ‘Art’ has a greater number of attached postcards than any other subject. As someone interested in art I suspect more will appear.

The first of two postcards issued to promote the information around the time it takes for an Australian passport to be received (it’s not much different here in the UK – although clearly they often arrive much earlier both here and in Australia I expect).

A nice image of a red kangaroo (such a typical icon of Australia) depicted here with a new passport and case all ready for a trip.

The second of two postcards issued by the Australian Government to give details about passports. This second design illustrates made up cachets which appear to be passport like stamps. The designs use well known landmarks for the locations. The two postcards depicted both have the same reverse (but obviously different reference numbers – which are consecutive indicating they were released together, or at least one after the other by Avantcard).

It is hard to tell from this scan but the areas of dark, actually blue, around the headgear and on the items held in the hands of the depicted mummy casket are actually printed in a shiny reflective blue ink which means when you hold this card at an angle these light up and this makes for a fantastic effect (which sadly just does not come off so well here – but trust me, it works really well).

This card is also of course a television related postcard so fits nicely into my collection.
