AMERICAN POSTAL STATIONERY POST CARDS
With
Company advertising and calling card reverse printings
I like advertising postcards, and I have recently, over the past year, found an interest in old American postal stationery post cards which have been used by companies to advise that a representative would be calling, and which advertise the goods and wares which the company produces or sells.
I consider these to be not only interesting from a philatelic/postcard point of view but also from a social history point of view. I have managed to obtain a few of what I think are interesting examples, many addressed to the same person in Nunda, New York. So, here is a selection of these cards from several eras.

This postal stationery post card was used on the 25th May 1887 from Rochester, New York to Nunda, New York with representative cancellations for both locations (25th May for Rochester - a number 2 Duplex styled cancel, and 26th May for Nunda, a simple single ring cancel).

Another copy of this Jefferson postal stationery post card, again addressed to Nunda, New York, this one was posted in 1888. This one was posted from Baltimore on 15th September 1888 receiving a nice single ring Baltimore cancellation.
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
This one has the reverse side printed vertically and rather than being a calling card this one contains a statement for a bill. The company here is the KEAGLE & GUIDER, Packers of the celebrated NATIONAL BRAND BALTIMORE OYSTERS. I know someone who collects stamps and cards related to Oysters and he really like this one.

This copy was posted around the 15th April 1897 (there is a cancel on the reverse side which is dated the 15th, and the date cachet used on the correspondence section is also dated the 15th, so I am assuming it was posted and delivered on this date – the cancel on the front has no discernable date).

This postal stationery post card was issued between 1914 and 1951, and over 58 billion of this variety were printed and issued. It is therefore, in this colour and shade of card, a very common card. This one here has the pre-printed stamp canceled with a ‘CHURCH STREET STATION – NEW YORK’ machine cancel dated 1948.

Issued 1902
This one cent postal stationery Post Card was uprated with an additional 1 cent Franklin green (from the 1894 issue with triangles in the top corners (SG283)) to pay the postage for onwards posting to the Netherlands. This copy was posted in 1903. The card has received a HILVERSUM, Netherlands double ring cancel dated 14th March 1903. The card was posted from America on the 2nd March, from Cleveland, Ohio. This has nice clear cancels and an attractive usage.

I suspect this is a mother and her two daughters (and I will almost certainly never know who these people were) who have attended ‘The De Freyne Studios’ in Liverpool and posed for this photograph and for this to then be made into postcards for them to send out to family and friends. This one was sent as an Xmas and Happy New Year postcard (although no stamp was applied, and this was probably sent in an outer envelope). There is no printed dating information on this card so the only thing we can use to try and date this card is the clothing worn by those depicted. Having looked at this, and I am no expert, I want to say that this is from the early 1900’s, sometime between 1900 and 1905, certainly before the end of WWI. I like this posed image, it is a good example of this type of group portrait image, but despite liking the photograph itself it was in fact the reverse side which lead to me buying this card.

Printers, and photographic studios, which is where many of these portrait postcard prints were taken, all needed to promote their wares. On postcards the best way of doing this is to have an ornate post card header on the reverse side. My interest in the history of postcard production and types leads me to look out for interesting ones. This one here I found last week on an antique market stall in Islington, London. The company’s logo design, used here, caught my eye and I think it is a superb example of self-promotion, and a lovely piece of postcard history.

EMERGENCY WARD 10

I have very few ‘Emergency Ward 10’ related postcards in my television collection, but when I saw this one, which I had previously been unaware of, I had to buy it.
Emergency Ward 10 (initially known as ‘Calling Nurse Roberts’ for its first six weeks) was a British medical soap opera which originally ran between 1957 (19th February) and 1967 (27th June). It is now considered to be one of the first major soap operas to be shown here in the UK. This was all before my time of TV watching as in 1967 I was still only 4yrs old, but it must have been popular as there were 1016 episodes (all originally 30 minutes long, although as this was an ITV show I wonder if the adverts cut into this time, later it was changed from a twice weekly soap to a single one hour drama shown on Saturday nights).
This children’s nurse costume toy shows just how popular I suspect the programme must have once been, probably earlier in the programmes run. It does make for an unusual addition to my television collection.

I love this unusual card, which my eldest son and his family bought for me on their holiday last year and which was in a bundle of postcards they gave me for Christmas. I have a thing for novelty, and unusual, postcards and this one ‘definitely’ fits the bill. I also wonder how many people have bought this card and cut out the lobster shapes and actually-have put this together, as per the instructions, and made their own lobster?

As you can see here the lobster pieces are printed on both sides. Despite the lobster having to be printed on both sides the design of this card still allows for a proper postcard reverse with address lines and a stamp box, so it could be posted (not much room for a message though – but, you get to cut out your own lobster! What could be better? Well, having one to eat, probably as I really like lobster)

These four postcards all have the same reverse layout but have some nice front designs. I recently joined a postcard collectors facebook page and on it someone was offering a bundle of postcards to anyone wishing to just pay the postage. I was happy to do this as the bundle contained these Postman Pat cards which I had not seen before and did not have in my collection. The transaction was arranged, and these came my way, along with a number of other cards which made the experience quite delightful, and extremely cheap.

This Royal Wedding postcard actually depicts a photograph taken at the announcement of the engagement. Both parties look very happy in this photograph.
A local dealer applied the 14p and 25p Royal Wedding stamps on the front and had them both cancelled with the basic BASILDON, ESSEX first day of issue single ring cancellation dated 22 July 1981. BASILDON was where I was working just prior to my retirement in December last year.

This copy has the 14p Royal Wedding stamp applied to the reverse side which has been cancelled by a special hand stamp (not first day of issue as this is an event special hand stamp) for ‘THE ROYAL FIREWORKS – 28 JULY 81 – LONDON SW1’. I have mentioned this special firework display before, held the night before the wedding, because I was one of the venture scouts who lined the road through Hyde Park which the royal family and the leaders and statesmen and women of the world travelled along. I even posted an image of my Royal Fireworks pass with the postcard, which I found in Florida funnily enough, depicting the event (see dated entry 04/12/2016 – use main tab ‘December Blogs 2016’).
I did not know this hand stamp for the event existed until I came across this example at last weeks Stampex. Because of my personal involvement in the event I had to have this hand-stamped card.

Headline Postcards were the creation and work of Ted Hawkings who drew the simple black and white drawings which were depicted on the cards. The cards were issued quite quickly after the events so were very topical when they were released. Bobby Moore passed away on the 24th February 1993, the anniversary of which was just two days ago.
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
Bobby Moore was commemorated on a 25p Football Legends stamp issued on 14th May 1996. A copy has been applied top right and cancelled with a special ‘1966 ENGLAND WINNERS – WEMBLEY – 14 MAY 1996’ hand stamp, depicting a football player. This is therefore a first day of issue handstamp for this issue. I originally bought this hand-stamped card from a dealer who specialised in such things. The boxed section of text on the left side was also added to this card by this same dealer and was not present on the original issue.
In 1999 another royal mail stamp was issued which depicted Bobby Moore. This one was a 26p stamp from the Millennium series under the ‘Entertainers’ set issued on the 1st June 1999. I applied one of these stamps to this card, top left, and this cancelled with a special first day of issue cancellation: ‘ENTERTAINERS – FOOTBALL’S GLORY – WEMBLEY – MIDDX – 01 – 06 – 99’. This is now possibly, if not probably, a unique usage for this card.
Bottom right is the artists signature under the hand numbering of the card. This is not unusual as each of the 500 cards were signed.

This is another postcard that got a quick release after the death of Bobby Moore. ROPC cards were printed by a dealer from the Brighton area, although these details were not universally known as often the cards were printed without seeking copyright for some of the images. The cards were always issued in a limited edition which did not exceed 100 and there were some interesting cards in the ongoing numbered series.
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
This time it was me that added the 25p Bobby Moore Football Legends stamp (issued on 14th May 1996) to the reverse side and had it cancelled first day of issue with a special WEMBLEY hand-stamp featuring the image of a football.
Then in 1999 I also applied the second stamp, top left, a 26p Booby Moore stamp from the Millennium series under the ‘Entertainers’ set issued on the 1st June 1999. Again, I had this cancelled with a special first day of issue pictorial hand stamp: ‘BOOBY MOORE – WEST HAM UNITED & ENGLAND – THE CAPTAIN’S TROPHIES – LONDON E13 – 1 JUNE 99’. There were not many of these postcards issued anyway, 100 at most, so the card was never easy to obtain, so I can say with near certainty that this usage is unique.
Both the two postcards depicted here show what can be done, with a little time of thought and pre-planning, with special issue stamps and special hand stamps. Both, of these postcards would easily be worth £5+ each now.

PIPPI LONGSTOCKING

I recently bought a postcard from eBay, its not important but it was a London 2012 card, the seller used some other postcards as stiffeners to protect the card in the post. For me this was a godsend as the cards he used were three copies of this Pippi Longstocking postcard. Now, this card was even better than the London 2012 card I had bought, and I got sent three copies of it. My interest here is that this is a television related postcard. Depicted is the child actress Inger Nilsson who played the main character of Pippi Longstocking in this Swedish television series which ran from 1969 (8 February to 3rd May). There were only 13 episodes but in Sweden it was a very popular series. The series were cut and re-edited into two dubbed English language films which were shown in America throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s and which became a bit of a television staple during these years. I do have some original postcards of this programme which I have bought from some European postcard dealers, but this is the first modern issue I have seen which shows the programmes character. What a fantastic freebie to get, it just goes to show that luck can play a big part in any collection.

When I was in London last week I paid my normal visit to the National Portrait Gallery shop. It has not been long since my last visit so there was not so much new stuff for me to look through, but I don’t think I have seen this Adele one before. Adele is of course a massive award-winning singer whose last couple of albums have sold in massive albums. She has even headlined at Glastonbury. This photograph is now ten years old, but it does show the huge number and range of the images held by the National Portrait Gallery.

This is a lovely example of a golden age multi-view postcard which is packed with lots of little photographs of local landmarks. For anyone interested in the history of Cheltenham and its architecture this would be a lovely item.

Henk Heiden is a long term, since the very start I believe, member of the Concorde Study Circle. He has produced a wide range of personal Concorde related postcards and was partially responsible for the other 40th Anniversary postcard which I have already depicted (see under date – 16/02/2018 – February 2018 Blog 2 tab). As only 10 copies have been made I suspect that these will soon have sold out as members of the study circle have already snapped up most of them (like me, I had to have one for my collection).

Now, I came across this at Stampex on a stall which specialises in postal history. I realised immediately that the image on the front of this field post card was hand drawn in pencil on the card. Sadly, the card was not posted but someone still took a lot of time and patience and has produced what I think is a superb little piece of art. This was quite expensive, it was priced at £10, but when I saw it I loved it, and it is unique. If I had not bought it, I know I would have regretted it and thought about it often. I had to have it and I am happy that it sits in my collection.
There is a name and a year penciled in the top right corner, but it is really-hard to make out, but I think the year is 1917. Because this is a field post card, and these were ‘really’ only available to soldiers and military staff, I therefore find myself, assuming, that this has been drawn by a soldier. To be fair, there is a real knowledge of equipment and the backpack on the man seen crumpled on the ground is precise in its depiction, something which a soldier would know and see, and I think this backs up my speculation. I wonder if the soldier, or suspected soldier, drew this whilst having some down time from fighting at the front? Was this his escape from the horror of it all, or just that he was an artist, professional or hobbyist, someone who relaxed through art. I will probably never be able to confirm who drew this, although it’s not yet impossible as I have only had it a week, but, what a superb item, a unique piece of militaria, and a unique postcard.
If anyone can make out what is written here I would love to hear from you. I suspect this is a name and possibly a rank as well, but I can not make it out. Knowing what this says could really help me progress forward with who was responsible for this sketch.

Although you can not see it on these scans each of the cards has a message across the front of the picture in hidden morse code, which can be seen whan the cards are titled in the light, all very clever and unusual and an additional curiosity with these cards.

This is a simple religious angel themed art postcard from the golden age period. For some reason, possibly the complexity and quantity of the available postcards, religion has never been a popular collectible theme, within the postcard world. But, some of the designs can be quite attractive, and this one is a very nice one, although, as is often the case with cards in my collection, it was the reverse side that caught my eye.

This side has a full printed advert on it for a company supplying a range of apparently ‘beautiful gelatined picture postcard’. There some interesting themes mentioned as well: Teddy Bears, Kittens, Scouting and of course, Angels. This is not the first of these overprinted advert cards that I have depicted, but it is a very nice one.
