WONDERGROUND GALLERY

WALT DISNEY WORLD

FLORIDA

Original Artwork of

“HATBOX GHOST-GHOSTLY PRESENTS”

By Artist

Jeff Granito

This image is based on a ghost in the ‘Haunted Mansion’ attraction at Disney. I have visited the attraction in Disney World, Florida many times, but, I have also visited the similar attraction located at Disneyland Paris. Although these Wonderground postcards are expensive they are interesting and seem to be popular with American Disney collectors.

POWER RANGERS MOVIE

2017

Who remembers the television series ‘Power Rangers’? It was extremely popular back in the day and ran, in one format or another, and with a constant change of characters, for a ‘number’ of series’. Its popularity has been brought right up to date with a feature film release for this year, 2017.

As pre-publicity, they have released a strip of publicity postcards which show the characters from the film. The cards are held together by perforated edges and when folded out they appear in a line.

KING GEORGE V

FIELD SERVICE POSTCARD

FIRST WORLD WAR

MINT COPY

A.F.A. 2042

114/Gen. No./5248

Ref: FCP1 (‘Collect British Postal Stationery’ by Alan Huggins and Colin Baker – Page 79)

Field Service postcards were issued to the armed services at the start of WWI and came with a pre-printed 1d scarlet stamp which is known as Ref: L12a and which is printed with a full stop after the printed word ‘PENNY.’ This ‘full stop’ version is the stamped to order variety used on these issues, and newspaper issues, but not other stamped to order postcards.

The reverse side of these postcards have a printed set of messages from which the sender was supposed to pick his options.

This version was issued on 21st August 1914. Later issues were printed without any stamp being depicted and I have posted copies of these later formats on a previous posting.

In an unusual turn of events it is mint copies of these postcards which are worth more than used ones. I suspect this is because most of them were used as intended, by soldiers writing home to advise family of their health (but not with details that could be censored). And as these were only available at the start of the war, in its first year, I suspect the enthusiasm was still in place and the men were eager to write home as they left on their great adventure.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

UNUSED COPY

Here you can see the printed message options which were available to the sender. Although mint copies may be more valuable, or at least are catalogued higher than used copies, I prefer the used ones where you can see what the sender decided to choose for his options.

KING GEORGE V

FIELD SERVICE POSTCARD

FIRST WORLD WAR

USED COPY

A.F.A. 2042

114/Gen. No./5248

Here you have a copy of this 1914 issued field service postcard. As is to be expected this copy was posted in 1914, 12th November, and the stamp has been cancelled with a quite feint cancel which I believe is a Field Post Office cancellation. The sender, Percy Platt, sent out this field service postcard on the same day he had received correspondence himself, so that was a quick response.

The catalogue ‘Collect British Postal Stationery’ by Alan Huggins and Colin Baker prices copies of these postcards as:

Mint - £15.00

Used - £12.50

RICK GEARY

POLITICAL POSTCARDS

TRUMP

2016

For every Presidential Election vote the artist Rick Geary produces a portrait image of each of the two contestants. This has occurred for many elections and they make for a nice collection as sometimes the loser disappears into history and Geary’s postcard image is the only time I have seen them depicted on a postcard. Clearly this is not the case with Hillary Clinton but these two cards make a nice addition to this traditional Geary output, two postcards every four years.

Although this is not the first Donald Trump postcard I have seen I do wonder if it is the first official postcard release (as in not a compute- generated pre-order image).

CLINTON

2016

Companion postcard to the above TRUMP design. Although I think the image of Trump is a good likeness I was not sure that that he has managed to capture Clinton quite as well. What do you think?

WINDSOR CASTLE

ROYAL MAIL STAMP CARD ISSUE

15TH FEBRUARY 2017

This issue consisted of a set of individual stamps and four stamps in a miniature stamp sheet. A royalty collector might like this set for the obvious connection between the Royal Family and the castle.

When I was younger, I was awarded, after a couple of years, the Queens Scout Award. Because of this I got to parade inside the grounds of Windsor Castle, and our group was inspected by Her Majesty the Queen herself and was fortunate to have a conversation with her. So, for me Windsor Castle holds fond memories and this postcard set has added interest for this very reason.

As always, my copies have the depicted stamp applied to the front and cancelled with a first day of issue special hand stamp.

This one here is of course the official and regular issue of this sheet.

“NO JEST”

IT’S NATIONAL POST CARD WEEK

MAY 4 – 10, 1986

Published by

Larry & Liz Nordhoff

Hand Numbered Limited Edition of 200 copies

In America, the ‘National Postcard Week’ has survived and is still an event each year to this day. It also existed in the UK for some years, but it never really took off here that it has done in the US. In America, lots of people, even more back in the earlier days, especially in the 1980’s, publish their own postcards and then exchange them with other collectors for their ‘National Postcard Week’ postcard designs.

This one here is kept in a see-through plastic bag because it has ‘glitter’ applied to the front design. If you look closely you can see the little bits that have come away from the postcard and which have collected along the inside edges of the bag in which it resides.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

The card has been signed by the Nordoff’s, or at least one of them signing on behalf of them both, and has been hand numbered along the bottom left hand corner. My copy here is number 48 of 200. The reverse side of American postcards are often more elaborate than those in the UK and Europe, and this is a great example of this, red print and a fancy bird and ink-well top design. This one here only cost me 50p, but I feel it is worth more than this.

Again you can see the little flecks of glitter along the bottom where they have gathered in the plastic bag, and some across the back of the card where they have agsin gathered.

AN ORIGINAL STORY SKETCH

FROM THE FILM “THE ARISTOCATS” 1970

WALT DISNEY

Published by

THE ART GROUP LIMITED

In their:

‘DISNEY – THE ARCHIVE COLLECTION’

Ref: 9307

I remember going to the cinema with my Mother and Brother to see this film when it came out in the UK. It is perhaps not one of the best remembered, or for that matter one of the best, Disney animated films but I have fond memories of my childhood visit to see it. There are quite a few postcards issued in this ‘DISNEY – THE ARCHIVE COLLECTION’ and it includes some interesting early sketches and pencil drawings which are different and well worth seeking out.

TRAVEL POSTCARD

CARTE POSTALE DE VOYAGE’

POSTCARD + 14 STICKERS

“A POSTCARD FOR EVERY TRIP”

Published by

SUCK UK LIMITED (London, England)

This is a clever idea, it is a package which contains a relatively bland, but not entirely unattractive postcard image, depicting a map of the world. What you also receive inside the cellophane outer package is a sheet of self-adhesive stickers, on a strip which is wrapped around the postcard (this also has the bar code and other descriptive text along with the postcards title in French).

Depicted here is the front of the postcard as seen when removed from the packaging.

FULL UNOPENED PACKAGE

FRONT

This is as seen from the front with the front of the postcard visible but with the sticker and information strip across the front. This strip has the postcards title and four little removable stickers across the top. There is a central image box which shows what can be done with these stickers, three of which are from those depicted across the top of the strip. Here the sender is shown as placing the stickers on to indicate a plane trip from North America to Australia.

FULL UNOPENED PACKAGE

REVERSE

Here another ten self-adhesive stickers can be seen on the strip which is wrapped around the postcard. There is also some information on the bottom of the strip which tells you that this was made in China for a London based company. There is also the obligatory bar code so that the item can be scanned for price at any cash tills. The stickers are simple in design but I still expect some people could have fun constructing their own postcard to send to friends and relatives. I do wonder how many have been used correctly and if any will ever turn up in dealer’s stock, and if they do if anyone will realise what they are.

Clearly this is a novelty item and such will fit nicely into me collection of the unusual and weird.

REVERSE SIDE OF POSTCARD

Removed from package and the sticker strip taken away

This is a ‘fairly’ standard, but well-conceived and properly laid out postcard reverse. I like the use of red printing as I believe any colour, other than black, makes a postcard stand out. Although this is an attractive item, which is clearly designed to be a ‘Fun Item’, I do think the company could have looked at having a more attractive company name…

(Text from reverse side of above postcard)

To my untrained eye this is a Traction Engine or a ‘Steam Engine’. I have, over the years, attended many steam days and country fairs where these large machines move around a field and give a display to all the visitors. I will openly admit that I know next to nothing about these vehicles but, this does not lesson my enthusiasm and fondness for seeing them. This one depicted here looks like a smashing one.

I have always been fascinated by space travel and I have collected postcards that relate to both the Russian and American space programs.

This postcard here is a 3D postcard, but it is an early one so the quality is not as good as those issued in more recent years. A postcard like this would also be sought by a collector of ‘Novelty’ related postcards as well, so it is a bonus that I collect both themes.

Posters on postcard is perhaps one of the themes which still attracts a large number collectors. This is a nice example.

Visitors to the webpage may well be aware that we have been having issues since the start with the system for leaving messages on the site. Thankfully we have now managed to change the system for something much more simple.

Hopefully now more of you will be able to respond to the posts and leave messages, ask questions and start discussions on what has been illustrated. I look forward to the site being more user friendly now and hope more of you can take part.

At each, and every STAMPEX show they issue a free exclusive postcard for every visitor. Both of course depict characters from the Mr Men and Little Miss book series.

STAMPEX POSTCARD 2017

POST & GO Overpirnt stamp

Another STAMPEX regular is the overprinted ‘Post & Go’ stamps. For the last few years I have been placing one of these on the front of the official postcard and having this cancelled with the special Stampex Show hand stamp. On this occasion the overprint read:

Machin Anniversary

1967 – 2017

Depicted here is my personal souvenir, the postcard with the Post & Go stamp applied. The cancel is the standard ‘Magnifying Glass’ special hand stamp with the date contained in a stamp like perforated box.

The cancel is dated for the first day of the show – 15th February 2017.

STAMPEX SMILERS STAMP SHEET

MR MEN and LITTLE MISS

As you can see here, the image at the base of this stamp sheet is, as previously mentioned above, the same as they printed on the free show postcard (see above). When I bought one of these sheets I realised that some of the characters in the image on the postcard were same as individually depicted on the labels attached to the stamps on this sheet. So, I had the idea that I would apply these to the postcards and produce some more unusual souvenirs.

ORDER OF THE GARTER

Official ‘SPRING STAMPEX 15 – 18 FEBRUARY 2017’

Overprinted stamp sheet

One of the exclusive items on sale at this show was an individually numbered and overprinted Royal Mail stamp sheet which has been produced in a limited edition of 6000, with any unsold sheets left after the end of the show being destroyed.

This special sheet was, in my opinion, just crying out to be placed on one of the official ‘Mr Men & Little Miss’ postcards. Clearly because of its size, it needed to be applied to the reverse side of the card. So, that is what I did. I had the sheet cancelled with a special ‘SPRING STAMPEX – WINDSOR CASTLE – FIRST DAY OF ISSUE – 15TH FEBRUARY 2017’ hand stamp. I think this is a lovely item and as I write this on eBay there are some first day covers for this sheet which are all priced over £20 (the original sheet is being sold at £6.95), so what is the value of my postcard?
