HOW TO WALK SILLY

German Issued Modern Postcard

This clearly depicts John Cleese in the famous ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus’ sketch which is best known as the ‘Ministry of Silly Walks’ sketch. This is a superb postcard and anything Monty Python based is collectible to a whole range of fans. This is the only copy of this ‘particular’ postcard that I have seen but I really would love to obtain another because whoever had this posted it to the UK but stuck a piece of paper down across the entire reverse side, which means I cannot obtain any details of publisher or why this postcard was released (see image below). Despite this damage to the reverse side I still bought this postcard from a dealer, this is because there is every likelihood that I will never see another one.

Here you can see the damage mentioned above

(this postcard might be an advert for a tee-shirt judging from some of the text which can be seen)

NETHERLANDS

Novelty ‘Applied’ Postcard

Untitled

‘Boy and Windmill’

Unknown Dutch Publisher

This is an interesting postcard (also appropriate considering the previous postings subject matter!). The image, in blue, depicts a windmill, cottages and trees. All of this has been embossed, i.e. it has been pushed upwards into a raised image. The little Dutch boy is ‘actually’ a small metal (possibly tin) embossed piece which has been stuck down on the front of the postcard. The addition of this little applied boy, and the embossed background image, make this a novelty item for my novelty collection.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This was posted to England but unfortunately the postmark did not apply very well and no date can be seen. The stamp used is a 7 ½ c value (SG 178) from the Netherlands 1898 stamp issue. But, although the stamp is from before the year 1900, it was certainly posted some years after the turn of the new century as the card has a divided back which was not used until 1902.

NETHERLANDS

Novelty ‘Applied’ Postcard

Untitled

‘Girl, Canal Barge and Windmill’

Unknown Dutch Publisher

As with the postcard depicting the boy this one, depicting a Dutch girl, also has an embossed raised blue background, which again includes a windmill although this time it is a canal vessel, I believe a sail barge, which is the main theme of the background. The little Dutch girl is again a small metal piece which has been stuck down onto the front of the postcards image. This is clearly a partner card to the one above featuring a boy. I found them together on a stall at a local Stamp & Postcard fair in my home town. It seemed logically to me to keep these two together, so I bought them both.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Again, posted to the UK, and with the same stamp as used on the ‘Boy’ postcard above, this also again has a handstamp which cannot be read. So, I do not know when or where this was posted. This is a shame but not enough to stop these being of interest.

I have always liked windmills, and, for that matter, watermills as well, so, I approached this stamp set with some enthusiasm when it was announced. Thankfully, I was impressed with the photographs used although I still do not know why exactly Royal Mail decided to produce this set as there seems to be no specific anniversary or commemoration.

As always, my cards have the actual stamp applied to the front and cancelled first day of issue with a special hand stamp.

THE PRINCES’ QUEST

IN CINEMAS FEBRUARY 2008

Official Publicity Postcard

“Once upon a time there were two children, on of noble blood and one not. Raised as brothers, their favourite childhood story is about the Djinn fairy waiting to be released from captivity by a heroic prince. Fate cruelly separates them until many years later when they become rivals in a quest to free the fairy they have dreamed about for so long”

(Text on reverse side of postcard)

I have not seen this film but have read up on it and now know that this is an animated (3D CGI animated) film which was originally a French-Spanish-Belgium- Italian film released in 2006, although this postcard seems to indicate that the film did not arrive here in the UK until 2008. The descriptive text on the reverse side seems to describe the film story quite well

A YOUNG POLICEMAN FAILS TO KEEP ORDER AS BRAZIL’S PELE IS SWAMPED BY AUTOGRAPH HUNTERS OUTSIDE THE TEAM’S HOTEL, 1966

Published by

PRESS ASSOCIATION

There are a number of these Press Association postcards and they are worth a look as many depict unusual images not seen on postcard before and the ones I have seen either have a sport or political themed content, but I would not be surprised if other subjects are also covered.

This one would fit into three of my different collections, the first being my ‘Police’ collection, and at first look this is the most obvious one. But, then you have ‘Sport’ as the footballer ‘Pele’ is also depicted, and in what I consider to be quite an unusual photograph. Lastly, I also have a collection around the 1966 Football World Cup and this photograph was taken during this tournament. It definitely makes for an unusual addition to this collection.

THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 15

ASPECT OF THE BASSEE

Almost certainly it can be said that this type of postcard, depicting a shelled or bombed area of France, either a town or city, is the most common type of World War 1 postcard. This one here depicts a street where the road has been covered with bricks and other wreckage. The location is a commune in the Nord department in Northern France – La Bassee.

TELEVISION LAUNCH FOR BRITAIN’S

NATIONAL LOTTERY

19 NOVEMBER 1994

Published by

PH TOPICS

Ref: No 22

Design by

WILLIAM DUTTON-SMITH

Issued in a Limited Edition of 500

I had forgotten how long the National Lottery has been running here in the UK. The design allows this to be collected by those who like political postcards, as it features the then Prime Minister, and television collectors, like me because this was televised live. With only 500 copies issued this is often now quite an expensive postcard and seems to sell at around £2.50 on eBay in mint condition. This superb comic postcard was produced and issued before the launch day which meant that it was available for hand-stamping on the actual day.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

As you can see here, my copy was posted on the actual first day of the National Lottery – 19th November 1994. Only a small number were cancelled, the general estimation is about 10 cards, and as a result these hand-stamped postcards are scarce and can be expected to cost quite a bit when, and to be honest it is more likely an ‘if’, one turns up. This is quite a special card.

QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA

ONE PENNY POSTAL STATIONERY POST CARD

The message written on the reverse side of this postal stationery post card is dated 3rd April 1891, and was addressed to a place called GYMPIE, which is a regional city in the Wide Bay-Burnett region of Queensland, Australia, which is about 100 miles north of the state capital of Brisbane, from where this postal stationery post card was posted. So, this postcard travelled around 100 miles. The red one penny pre-printed Queen Victoria stamp was cancelled with a BRISBANE cancellation dated the 3rd of April 1891. On the reverse-side there is a receiving mark, a cancellation, for GYMPIE, QUEENSLAND, dated the 4th April 1891.

This is the first of the six free postcards and it is a cracker. I collect super-hero themed postcards and this is probably the postcard that caused me to buy this magazine. This was the only depicted subject that I had prior knowledge of before buying this package (thanks to Robert). This is a really addition to my collection but, it did not end up being the best postcard in the set (and, I should let you know that these cards are not numbered or described beyond the name os the computer game from which the image depicted has been taken.

For Americans, for whom this postcard may well be extremely hard to obtain, this would be a highly sought-after example. This one really makes this selection worth seeking out (check eBay as I would be surprised if copies do not appear here soon)

£10 HIGH VALUE DIFINITIVE

(BRITANNIA)

Reproduced from a stamp designed by

Roundel Design

And issued by Royal Mail on 2nd March 1993

Published by

ROYAL MAIL

When this £10 stamp was issued in 1993 Royal Mail also released this postcard depicting the stamps design, well, actually, it was depicting a very similar design. The stamp image on the card is actually slightly different. This was because Royal Mail were worried about fraud and copying of the enlarged image to print fake stamps. Some of the differences are:

The prongs on top of the fork held in Britannia’s hand (on the card they only have one tip edge)

On the card Britannia is wearing a bracelet on the arm holding the fork – this is not on the stamp itself

There is a neck piece with rings around Britannia’s neck on the card – this is not on the stamp itself

There are others, apparently, but these three are the ones I remember and which are the most obvious.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

I wanted to have my copy of the postcard used first day of issue with a copy of the £10 stamp. I then discovered that the ident number strip, which appeared in the top margin area around the stamps went across the top of two stamps, so, I asked for a strip of two of the stamps with the complete ident number strip. This was then applied by someone who used to make up my first day of issue cards for me, and was cancelled with a special ‘DOVER, KENT 2/3/93’ hand stamp. This made for a very special and unusual addition to my collection (I have also often wondered if anyone else did the same thing – if not there is also the possibility that this could be a unique usage).

The card mint is quite collectible and valued at several pounds. Copies used with one £10 stamp cancelled first day of issue are catalogued at £30. I therefore wonder what the value of this one is.

Plain backed Private Issue Postal Stationery Post Card

4d Value

This smashing post card has a pre-printed 4d Machin Queens Head but beside it has been printed a purple coloured (as was the first Queen Victoria stamp printed on the very first UK postal Stationery Post card issued in 1870) Queen Victoria stamp head with the dates 1870 – 1970 printed underneath the head.

The 4d Machin pre-printed stamp has been cancelled with a special hand stamp that reads;

“CENTENARY OF BRITISH POSTCARD – EXHIBITION PROUD BAILEY PHILATELIC GALLERIES – OCT 1ST – 1870 – 1970 BRIGHTON”.

This date was the exact 100th anniversary date as the very first UK Postal Stationery Post Card was released on the 1st October 1870. This hand stamp was the official hand stamp to go with this card issue.

This is a nice postcard which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first UK Post Card.

JU 88A’s

ONE OF A FORMATION OF JU 88A’s

According to the original German caption, the bombers are flying just above a cloud layer in which they could seek cover in the event of fighter attack”

Published by

AFTER THE BATTLE

Ref: P379

There was no posting last night because I was at the cinema watching the new film called ‘DUNKIRK’. I have an interest in military history and have visited Dunkirk. The film is not an historical record of the events of Dunkirk but, rather, an emotional view of Dunkirk through the eyes of a range of characters.

One of these is a Spitfire pilot played by the actor Tom Hardy, this character takes on bombers just like the one depicted here.

If you get the chance to see the film it is one which I would recommend regardless of any interest in war films because, as stated before, this is about the people rather than just about the fighting and the killing.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Appropriately, considering the inclusion of Spitfires in the film DUNKIRK, and I don’t think the Spitfire has been better framed or filmed as here in this film, this postcard has an 18p Jersey ‘50th Anniversary Battle of Britain’ Spitfire stamp (SG 531) applied and cancelled first day of issue, in 1990, with a special hand stamp which also features the outline of a Spitfire.

The card has also received a special blue cachet which reads ‘50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN – R.A.F. ASSOCIATION, SOUVENIR CENTRE, LONDON 1990’.

The Battle of Britain was of course the next struggle that the UK went through after the retreat at Dunkirk.

THE ‘PEDESTAL’ CONVOY TO MALTA

Conflict at Sea, 1939 - 1945

Paintings by John Hamilton displayed on HMS Belfast

Two of the merchantman under repeated Luftwaffe attack were the SS Brisbane Star and SS Rochester Castle”

Published by the

IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM

Ref: 46

The ‘Pedestal’ convoy to Malta was in August 1942. It was organised to carry supplies to the heavily under siege island. Only five of the 14 Merchantman vessels involved in the convoy made it into the harbour at Malta, but, because one of these was the tanker SS Ohio, an American ship with a British crew that allowed for this convoy to be considered a success.

I do not have any postcards, probably understandably, depicting ships being bombed and strafed during the evacuation at Dunkirk, but this did happen frequently and is shown several times during the film. This postcard here, from a much later incident during the second world war, does depict the type of assault that the destroyers transporting soldiers away from Dunkirk underwent, although the vessels depicted here are merchantmen and not battleships.

GILES – ONE OF THE FAMILY EXHIBITION

AT THE

I am a big fan of cartoons and over the years I have read a number of the annual ‘Giles’ cartoon books. His family of characters always made me laugh and Grandma was my favourite, and, I think it was the fact that she is depicted here creating a work of art that lead to me buying this card from a dealer at a postcard fair.

Ronald ‘Carl’ Giles (29th September 1916 – 27th August 1995) was well known for his work for the newspaper the ‘Daily Express’, which consisted of single, highly detailed panels where often loads of things were going on in the background. The famous ‘Giles Family’ first appeared in a cartoon on the 5th August 1945. Grandma first appeared in November 1947 and went on to become the favourite of many readers.

These postcards, from the First World War, depict a badly damaged ambulance which was used here, on this postcard, to raise money on behalf of the British Ambulance Committee, to be used to maintain and supply ambulances for use on the French front line. Verdun was a French battle, and a German campaign where the German army tried to bleed the French army dry by slaughtering them whilst they fought hard to prevent the German army from capturing the city of Verdun.
