I also like the fact that an image of the Tower of Refuge has been added in black as well. The combination of all of this is attractive and eye catching in my mind. The card has also been signed by the Coxswain of the Douglas isle of Man lifeboat as well, an additional bonus.

The thing which really catches the eye is the applied stamp, the Isle of Man 10p ‘150^th Anniversary of Royal National Lifeboat Institution’ (SG 45), the top value in the set. The stamp has been cancelled first day of issue – 4^th March 1974 – with a PORT ERIN, ISLE-OF-MAN circular date stamp.

I don’t think I have shown this one before, I bought it at the same time as buying a wooden Raven related postcard which I know I have depicted. Still, it’s a lovely card and if I have shown it before it is one worth a second look, and if not, it is a cracking card which deserves to be shown.

I bought this one a couple of years ago on a visit to the gift shop for the Tower of London.

The Imperial War Museum has an amazing collection of posters, many of which have rarely or never appeared on postcard before being published by the Imperial War Museum. This one here is a lovely design and is one that I have not previously seen on any postcard or any of the WW1 era books I have read.

With Armistice day, and its 100^th anniversary, coming up in just a few days I have a few postcards from this era or relating to it which I shall be posting between now and then.

This card has a Jersey 3 ½ p PORTELET BAY definitive stamp (SG 48), part of the definitive set issued in 1970. This stamp has been cancelled with a nice 14^th September 1974 JERSEY – BATTLE OF BRITAIN special hand stamp. It was this combination of spitfire postcard and Battle of Britain cancel which appealed to me.

This postcard is from the Disneyland theme park in California, which I have not visited, but many of the characters and pirate animatronics are the same here and in the attraction of the same name at Walt Disney World in Florida. This pirate depicted here certainly can be found at both attractions.

This postcard depicts one of the many original sketches used in creating the original Disneyland attraction. It is one postcard from what is quite a large set, as you will see below, although I do not have a complete set myself (yet).

I have decided to start of this posting selection with this specific postcard for a specific reason, and that is that I recently had the great pleasure of seeing the original hand drawn and coloured sketch which is depicted on this card. On the 24^th October I was in San Francisco for my last day of the recent trip across America. To end our holiday Jo and I visited ‘The Walt Disney Family Museum’ located in an area of Presidio Park. On our visit we got to see a special exhibition titled ‘NINE OLD MEN – WALT DISNEY’S MASTERS OF ANIMATION’. In this exhibit they had the original of this picture on display. I recognised it immediately and was delighted to see it for real.

Untitled but this one shows the iconic animatronic scene of the pirate prisoners trying to coax the gaoler’s dog to bring the cell keys to them. This scene was so iconic of the ride that it appears in the first Pirates of the Caribbean feature film.

If I am right the wide eager eyes on these pirates are here because they are watching the auction of the captive ladies (the scene with the red-haired lady in red which was changed last year because it was deemed sexist – they changed the red haired and red dressed lady into a pirate lady taking part in the events from the other side)

The SS Medic was launched on 15^th December 1898 and entered service in August 1899 as one of five ‘Jubilee Class’ ocean liners built specifically to service the Liverpool - Cape Town – Sydney route. She carried up to 320 third class passenger but was mainly a cargo ship as she had seven cargo holds which could handle substantial amounts of cargo including Australian meat which was carried in refrigerated holds, which most on board holds were.

The ships name was from the ancient Persian region of Media. She had a long service with White Star but was sold in 1928 to a Norway based company for £35,000. She was then turned into a whale factory ship and renamed the ‘HEKTORIA’. She had a ramp installed in the stern and was fitted out with 18 large cargo tanks for the whale oil.

In 1932 the ship returned to the British register, but she remained involved in the whaling trade. At the start of World War II she was requisitioned by the Ministry of War Transport to be used as an oil tanker. On the 12^th September 1942 she was torpedoed and sunk by the German U-Boat U-608. Only one crew member lost his life. The other 76 crew members, 8 gunners and the master were picked up by the Canadian corvette HMCS ARVIDA.

This is an Italian art card which I think was probably either a free hotel postcard, or possibly, although less likely, a postcard which could be bought at the hotel for sending. I think the hotel would have liked the free publicity of such a card being sent out, so I suspect the postcard was originally free to those who were staying here. This has a superb picture on it whatever.

This is an interesting postcard and one which turns up more often than you might think, although its value does fluctuate as I have seen it at £4 and at £19, so shopping around dealers is recommended for this one. This is, as mentioned before, the Pier in my home town. Over its long lifespan it has suffered a number of disasters including this one in 1908, which thanks to my local history book collection I know was as a result of the Pier being hit by the Thames conservancy hulk ‘Marlborough’. I think this is a cracking photograph and a superb example of local history on postcard.

This is a companion card to the one I depicted yesterday. It depicts a different part of the Tower and a specific part of the installation from 2014. As stated yesterday I did visit this 2014 installation and thought it was superb, so good in fact that I ended up buying one of the ceramic poppies (and I was glad that I bought mine so early on as they sold out much quicker than I anticipated).

I have posted this one because, again as stated yesterday, I returned to the Tower last night for this year’s commemoration of the Armistice installation called ‘Beyond the Deepening Shadow’. This time they have 10,000 torches which are lit and illuminate the moat. It is an impressive sight, perhaps not quite as visually stunning as the 2014 poppies, as depicted here, but still something worthy of this commemoration and an impressive sight.

Another of my photographs, which as with the one above was taken whilst I was down in the moat area. The Towers Beefeaters were in attendance and stood amongst the lit torches. I have seen Beefeaters before, but this was the first time I had seen so many of them. They are of course the Yeoman Wardens of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, otherwise more commonly known as the Beefeaters, the guardians of the Tower of London.

Although the area of the moat was a great place to see the installation up close (this area was ticketed) you could also see the installation from the walkway beside the Tower up onto Tower Bridge and this was a great place to take photographs from and is from where this one was taken.

I am visiting the Tower of London again today, I did visit in 2014 and saw the excellent and moving exhibition of ceramic poppies which are depicted on this postcard. Tonight, I am visiting to see the new 2018 Armistice exhibit which involves the lighting of 10,000 torches which are again scattered around the Castles moat area. We have special tickets to enter the moat so will be up close to the torches and getting a ringside view. This postcard here seemed an obvious choice for today’s posting before I leave.

This one is from Denmark and the poster cartoon was used to promote the Postal Cheque Account, back when cheques were much more common, before the days of paypal and internet bank transfer options. This is a nice piece of modern postal history.

There is no date on this postcard, and no descriptive text or title which could help us to accurately date this postcard. Therefore, we are left with the style of the swimsuit which to me looks 1950’s. or maybe late 1940’s, but of course this does not mean that this is not a later issued postcard depicting an earlier photograph. This is still a nice card though whenever it was issued.

I cannot resist any postcard which has a police theme. This large postcard is a very simple one consisting of a boxed cartoon placed on a colour photograph of Tower Bridge, London. This would have been a cheap postcard for tourists to the city to send home to friends and relatives.

I have not been to Paris (it is on my ‘must do’ list), but if I ever do get to visit, I would want to visit and at least see the outside of this famous theatre. This image here is, I assume, from the year 1900 and depicts a lovely rustic looking old scene of this famous windmill topped structure. This photographic postcard was another of my ‘Cheap Box’ finds.

This is clearly another card in the same series as the above postcard. This one has a lot of transport interest contained within it. There is a lovely line of old trams, or trolley buses. It is a delightful picture, which I again have to assume was taken in the year 1900.

It is the statue in the centre of this photograph which is called ‘Bavaria’. It was by Ludwig Schwanthaler. The Ruhmeshalle (which means ‘Hall of Fame) is the impressive columned building across the back of this picture. This was designed by Leon Von Klenze for Ludwig I of Bavaria.

This was a recent find, although I can’t remember exactly where I sourced this from but having said that I do know why I bought it. Like many of the view postcards in my collection (but by no means all) this was bought because it is something which I have seen for real. Jo and I visited Munich some years ago, certainly over ten years (possibly it was 2006) and on one day we visited the world famous ‘Octoberfest’ which is laid out in massive building size tents around the area which fronts this depicted building. The Octoberfest is a great event and we enjoyed it emensely, especially Jo, as she does drink.... and did, but as someone who does not drink I still had a great time here and I got to have a walk around and see this great building and statue.

This postcard was posted from Munich to England in 1907, there is a hand-written date on the front of the card which is 05/06/07. The stamp applied here has been cancelled with a double-ring MUNCHEN cancellation which is dated 5 (then I assume JUNE, but this part of the cancel is not clear) 07.

I came across these postcards last week in a local Greetings cards shop in one of the shopping centres here in Southend-on-Sea where I live. Now, these are probably only going to appeal to those either interested in local history, local landmarks and, or, who collect Southend themed postcards. They would also possibly appeal to tourists to the town as well, but I doubt many would come across them here in this card shop as it is a little out of the way for a tourist visit.

This Pier Train one is my favourite of the three, and the only one which could possibly have a wider interest because of the train theme connection.

Being a local and a collector I loved these and was delighted to be have come across them and to add them to my collection.

Although I don’t collect stamps in the same way as I collect Postcards (life would be very expensive if I also collected all the stamps I liked! I do buy some stamps, anything TV related and odd bits and pieces as souvenirs of trips, holidays and stamp exhibitions) I do still have an interest in stamps and like to look out for anything that illustrates stamps on postcard. So, it was the stamps incorporated into this piece of artwork that appealed to me when I first saw it.

Official Exposition 1915 Postcard

This was one of my Mount Dora flea (antique) market buys earlier this summer. I like these exhibition/exposition poster design postcards and prefer them to the more traditional photographic postcards which depict the structures put up for these events.

This exposition (also more commonly known as a ‘World’s Fair’) was held in San Francisco from 20^th February to the 4^th December 1915. It was set up to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal, but according to some of the websites I have read it was widely seen in the city as being an opportunity to show how the city had recovered from the 1906 earthquake. The exposition clearly ran for many months and it had, apparently, 18,876,438 visitors (that’s a very precise number!)

On most, if not all, as I believe, Disney cruises the ships Captain has one onboard signing session, which is normally around half an hour and during which passengers can have items signed. I have been on two Disney cruises and on the first I had a postcard signed by that captain, so on this latest cruise I wanted to get at least one other card signed (I ended up getting two). The Captain onboard this recent trip was Captain Marco. This is one of my two signed cards.

Sometimes you do not have to be on the actual Disney ship to pick up a Disney Cruise Line ship postcard. This year I was on the Fantasy, but later when I was in Orlando I visited one of the Disney outlet shops and found this postcard on sale inside for the bargain price of $2.99, which gives you a good idea of just how expensive the cards are when sold on board, normally $5+ (which is a lot, but normally your best opportunity to pick a copy up). This has the same reverse side as the above two cards (identical except for the numbers underneath the barcode).

I bought This plain backed postcard sized art card in Orlando, Florida, in a special shop located in the ‘City Walk’ area of the Universal Studios Theme Park complex way back in July of this year on my first US holiday of 2018. At the time it was only the second image on a card that I had found of the new Doctor, who was still nearly three months from making her first TV appearance in this guise. Both the first postcard (although again plain backed), posted on the webpage prior to obtaining this card, and the second postcard (or if you want to be more precise, the first actual real postcard), already posted to the webpage previously but obtained and posted after buying this card here, had been found before the first new episode aired. When I saw this beautiful, and original image I knew, despite the high (very high!) cost, that I had to have it. I have now caught up with the new episodes (there is another one tonight, as I am typing this) since my holiday, I missed the first three episodes. So, I thought it was about time this appeared on the webpage (I posted it on the sites facebook page when I bought it).

If anyone knows who the artist was I would love to know.

Although the copyright is shown as Disney, on both sides, there is no other informative text on this postcard.

I would love to find out the source of this postcard. The title of ‘Le Roi Lion’ is the French title of the Disney film so immediately you are led to believe this is a French issue. What surprises me is the uses of a piece of artwork on the left side with two costumed characters from what I take to be the musical version of the films story. Therefore, I am going to guess that this card was sold, or given away (unlikely I think), as either a promotional item or a souvenir of seeing the musical whilst it was playing in France. A nice and unusual Disney Themed Postcard
