ROYAL MAIL PHQ STAMP CARD SET

LONDON AQUATICS CENTRE
Ref: PHQ 431 (1) 7.17
Stamp issued 13 July 2017
Sometimes when a set is publicised I look at it and the set does not appeal. Sometimes this remains the case when I see the actual stamps and the cards. Initially I was unimpressed with this set. I thought it a bit bland and not of interest to me. But, later when I researched some of the images some of the cards/stamps actually fit well into some of my collections. I have a London Olympics 2012 collection and this card depicts the building in which the Olympic Swimming pool events were held. Therefore, it becomes a nice Olympics 2012 addition. So, at least one interesting card image.

I will accept that this is an interesting looking building, and for anyone living in Birmingham it will have extra interest. Perhaps if I had seen this building it would register with me more (well, OK, interesting to me then).

SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT, EDINBURGH
Ref: PHQ 431 (4) 7.17

I should probably mention that all of the stamps issued in this set are 1st class valued stamps. The images are of buildings across Great Britain and these two have been chosen to represent Scotland
TOP
GIANT’S CAUSEWAY VISITOR CENTRE
Ref: PHQ 431 (5) 7.17
Stamp issued 13 July 2017
This is the Northern Ireland entry in the stamp set and represents this part of Great Britain. I have yet visit Northern Ireland but if I do I would very much like to visit the Giant’s Causeway as I do already have a number of postcards depicting it.
BOTTOM
CYNULLIAD CENEDLAETHOL CYMRU, CAERDYDD
NATIONAL ASSEMBLY FOR WALES, CARDIFF
Ref: PHQ 431 (6) 7.17
Stamp issued 13 July 2017
I suppose if you pick the Scottish Parliament structure then you really should also include the Welsh National Assembly, so Royal Mail have. It does look impressive, but as with the other card images, excepting the London Olympic Games connected first one, this holds no interest beyond being an attractive photograph.
TOP
EDEN PROJECT, ST AUSTELL
Ref: PHQ 431 (7) 7.17
Stamp issued 13 July 2017
This is now a well-known location and has been used in movies and television programmes with the James Bond film Die Another Day being possibly the most memorable. The location was finished in 2000 and opened in 2001 so is a few years old now.
BOTTOM
EVERYMAN THEATRE, LIVERPOOL

Stamp issued 13 July 2017
Another location which I had not heard of but which I suspect is well known locally
TOP
IWM (IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM) NORTH, MANCHESTER
Ref: PHQ 431 (9) 7.17
Stamp issued 13 July 2017
I am a frequent visitor to the Imperial War Museum in London but I have never been to Manchester so know nothing about this building and what it holds. It might be enough to lure me north to have a look.
BOTTOM
SWITCH HOUSE, TATE MODERN, LONDON
Ref: PHQ 431 (10) 7.17
Stamp issued 13 July 2017
This is a location that I do know well
So, I suspect in the regions and areas where the separate structures are located these cards would hold much more interest. But, as a set it does not greatly appeal. This is not an issue though as I do not believe that Royal Mail should only issues stamps on themes and depicting things that I am interested in. Stamps from any country are for everyone and themes should be varied. This is still not a set for me though.

MARVEL LEGACY #1
LAUNCH PARTY!
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27TH
AT YOUR PARTICIPATING RETAIL STORE
This is an advert postcard for a new comic release. I found this on the counter at a smashing comic book shop I found in a retail outlet area in Florida (my wife and daughter were looking at shoes, trainers actually, I think! – I was wandering around and found this huge comic book sci-fi store). Unfortunately, the store had no postcards on sale but it did have this freebie. For anyone who collects Superhero themed postcards this is a cracker. The majority of ‘The Avengers’ are depicted, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Black Widow, the Scarlet Witch and Iron Man, but you also have Ant-Man (technically in the comic books he is also an Avenger), the Black Panther, Dr Strange, Daredevil, Storm (from the X-Men), Spider-Man (he was in the last Captain America film – Civil War – as a sort of Avenger), Wasp, Ms Marvel and Lockjaw (if you have not yet heard of Lockjaw he is the massive dog in the bottom right corner – you will be hearing and seeing more of him in the new upcoming ‘Inhumans’ television series as he is a character in that series, which is based in the lesser known ‘Inhumans’ comic books). What an amazing line up for one image (and I suspect it may also be the image used on the advertised comics double gatefold cover by Joe Quesada…)

RAINFOREST CAFÉ
NOVELTY “FRIDGE MAGNET POSTCARD”
Official Issued Postcard
This is a round edged postcard which is made from that material which is quite heavy and which is used to make what is normally much smaller fridge magnets. When I first picked this up I thought the white smudge like marks top centre and bottom left around the edges of the Lion head were dust marks or some other sort of powder which needed to be brushed off. I was wrong. Which I found out when I tried to remove it and failed. I also realised when I looked at other cards and saw it was on them all! Despite this rather unusual looking boarder I did like the central lion head. This card cost me $3 and I picked it up at the Rainforest Café shop attached to the restaurant located in Disney Springs in Walt Disney World, Florida.

HARD ROCK HOTEL
UNIVERSAL ORLANDO
“………..WAS THE SONG OF OUR STAY”
MAKING HISTORY SINCE 1971
“LOVE ALL. SERVE ALL – HARD ROCK HOTEL”
Not all postcards are especially attractive. Some are purely functional and designed for a specific usage. This postcard is a free postcard which is found in each room at the Hard Rock Hotel, which is immediately next to the Universal Studios Theme Park. This is where we stayed on the first week of our holiday before moving onto the Disney fortnight. If you ever stay at the Hard Rock Hotel then have a look in the magazine and stationery rack which is on the desk. Each room contains two copies of this postcard and it is designed to be filled in and sent out by those staying here. It may not be the best postcard I have ever added to my collection, but, it does make for a nice souvenir of my stay and it was free. I grabbed both from our room and the two in our kids adjoining room.

DISNEY’S PORT ORLEANS RESORT
FRENCH QUARTER
Official Resort Postcard
“Revel in the romance and pageantry of Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter, where cobblestone streets, gas lamps, wrought-iron balconies and fragrant magnolia blossoms evoke the Antebellum era and colorful Mardi Gras characters and jazz keep things lively”
(Text from the reverse side of above postcards)
As of yesterday, we are back in the UK and so, I have been able to scan in some of the postcards I bought whilst away, so, bare with me as it is possible that over the next week or so some of these will find their way onto the webpage (because, like most collectors, it is the most recent acquisitions which are at the forefront of my interest…they are also the cards I will look at the most over the coming weeks).
To start me off I depict a postcard of the Disney World resort in which we have stayed the past two weeks. It was our first time here (we stayed in its sister resort – the Port Orleans Riverside Resort – last year). Port Orleans – French Quarter is one of the smallest of the Disney World Resorts but it is a popular one with returning Disney World visitors, especially older couples and those with young children (the later because of the interesting swimming pool area, the former because the smaller area means shorter journeys to the counter service restaurant and the main shop and reception area).
We enjoyed staying here very much (but, if I am honest, I preferred ‘Riverside’)

AUSTRALIA
QUEEN ELIZABETH II
LETTERCARDS
5 cent Lettercard
Modern lettercards like these are quite cheap, although not always easy to get if you are looking for them. I recently came across the three depicted here in a cheap box at Stampex. The designs are the same in format although the postage value of the pre-printed stamps is different on each item. This 5c value lettercard actually cost 6 cents to buy, I expect the added cent was to cover the cost of the card used. When Lettercards were originally released, and postal stationery postcards for that matter, they cost just the value of the pre-printed stamp upon them. But, over time this changed to include some cost towards the materials used alongside the cost of the postage.
I have opened-up this 5c value lettercard so that you can see both sides of the item (when stamp collectors display items like this in exhibits they refer to it being an ‘Expanded View’.

TOP
6 cent Lettercard
BOTTOM
10 cent Lettercard
I have not bothered to show these as expanded views because although there are slight differences they are minimal. The obvious difference here is that you can see that the 6 cent lettercard has its text printed in black whilst the 10 cent lettercard (and the 5 cent lettercard depicted above) has this printed in green. This is a more specialised style of collecting, obtaining examples of different postage valued items which are otherwise very similar, but I like these, and their like and there is some entertainment seeking out additions to his type of collection.

CINDERELLA CASTLE
WALT DISNEY WORLD
MAGIC KINGDOM
Official Park Postcard
Today is my last full day in Disney World. Tomorrow we have a partial day before driving to the airport and flying back overnight to the UK. As it happens we will be visiting the Magic Kingdom today and getting our last look at Cinderella’s Castle. This postcard is one I picked up here on a previous visit a couple of years back. It is no longer on sale here but I doubt very much it would be hard to find as I suspect many thousands, if not millions were sold over the years it was available. It is a simple postcard image but one which will bring back memories for hundreds of thousands of Disney World visitors.
I suspect this will be my last posting before my return on Friday morning. I will post something on Friday but wil not get the opportunity tomorrow (as will need to pack and the computer will go away). Hopefully I will come across something to place on the facebook page so please do check that out (quite a bit has gone on here over my holiday).

MICHELIN AND THE TYRE MAN
“LEPNEU MICHELIN “JUMELE2””
BIBENDUM COLLECTON
Published by
EDITIONS DU DESASTRE
Ref: BI 039
A nice Michelin tyre advert which is from a collection of modern postcards in this series which depict Michelin adverts. I have already placed one card from this series on the webpage that one did depict the well-known Michelin Man whilst this one does not, but that is what I liked about this one.

NIESEN – BAHN 2367 m. u. M
Balmhorn Altels Rinderhorn
A very simple photographic postcard of a mountain with no front text or adornments (although I was intrigued by the fingerprint top right which I assume was where someone touched the original negative for this photograph (this is actually printed, and was not something that has happened to this particular postcard alone).
The text on the reverse side (which is shown above as the title) means NIESEN – TRAIN. This is the Niesen Funicular railway which is in the canton of Bern, Switzerland and links the village of Mulenen with the summit of the mountain called Niesen, which I assume is what is depicted here. The railway was opened in 1910 (It took four years to build). The postcard is not very dramatic but then it was the reverse side which attracted me.
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
The reverse side of this postcard is far more interesting. You have the printed postcard marks and text in blue, including a nice boxed image of someone looking out over the mountain in the area where the stamp box would be. The sender has very nicely applied the stamp beside this so that you can still see this printed boxed image (very thoughtful).
The card also has a purple two-line cachet applied under the printed blue title:
Hotel = Restaurant Niesen = Kulm
(2367 m Q. M.)
This is a cachet for the Hotel-restaurant at the top of the Niesen mountain, the Niesen – Kulm. This was built in 1856, fifty years before the railway made access to it much easier! So, this postcard was probably obtained from the hotel and may even have been posted there as the stamp has been cancelled with a double ring cancellation for NIESEN KULM 2367m (which I assume is the height of the mountain). The cancel is dated 1st November 1928. The postcard image itself may be plain but its usage is anything but. A good example why it is always worth checking the back of a postcard as well as the front.
PHOTOGRAPH
Old Image of the Niesen Kulm, hotel and restaurant
If I am right this shows the Post Office where I assume my postcard was bought and posted from - it looks like it could have been the building on the far right of this photograph, with a queue of people outside possibly looking at postcards and deciding which one(s) to buy and post from this unusual location.

PHILATELIC SOCIETY ANNIVERSARY 1969
SPECIAL HANDSTAMP CARD
Published by
LINDUM STAMPS, LINCOLN
Ref: Mic SP2
Special Handstamp
“Stamp Exhibition, Peterborough – 12 April 1969”
This is a plain backed card which depicts artwork for the ‘Postal Union Congress, London 1929 £1 stamp. This is a very philatelic card which would probably be collected by a postal history or stamp collector rather than a postcard collector. It is my interest in stamps which leads me to buy this sort of item.

Paperchase
My only reason for buying this one was because I liked the design, and I cannot resist any postcard which uses images of animals in unusual ways. This is simple, difficult to place in any theme except one for animals or wildlife, but still an attractive card.
This one is currently available in branches of paperchase as it was a recent purchase just before my holiday (I think I bought it whilst waiting for the recent Stampex show to open, so it was mid September)

DAS DEUTSCHE GOLDSCHMIEDEHAUS DER STADT HANAU A/M
“The German Goldschmiedehaus [House of Goldsmiths] of the city of Hanau”
German Postal Stationery Post Card
(Probably from the 1930’s, mid to late era)
Hanau is famous for being the birth place of the Brothers Grimm, famous for their fairy tales but the building depicted here on the postal stationery post card is the ‘House of Goldsmiths’. I did find it interesting that a guide for the city states that it is mainly an industrial city so visitors will come across some “ugly” areas! But, clearly, they have some scenic spots as well as this building still looks fantastic.

Dublin Series No 7
“The partial enclosing structure of the balcony cars was later extended over the platform area to provide Dublin’s first all enclosed trams. These became the workhorse of the Dublin United Tramway fleet and were the most ubiquitious. As the balcony cars, the “Standards”, as they were called, first appeared in the 20’s and survived until the closure. They were built at the Dublin United Tramway works at Spa Road in Dublin”
(Text from reverse side of postcard)
This is the type of card that specialists like because the text gives you all the information you initially need without having to resort to specialist books, or more likely these days, the internet.
This type of vehicle art card, where the vehicle, be it a car, tram or train, is depicted against a plain white background is a well-used format type which has been popular for many years.

TEDDY EDWARD AND JASMINE WITH THE SWANS
Published by
J. ARTHUR DIXON
Ref: CP 6445
I have previously posted a Teddy Edward postcard, but there are quite a few in the series. My interest is, as previously stated, the fact that there was a television series from which these images were taken. More information can be found on my previous posting (you will have to hunt it down though as I can-not remember when I made that posting – but at least there will be lots of postcards to look at during your search)

Two nights ago, I was in Hollywood Studios watching the Star Wars light and firework show. It has been two very busy days and I am only getting a quick moment to post a card today between a morning and afternoon at Typhoon Lagoon water park and rushing to Epcot for a meal and then to stay there for tonight’s 2200hrs firework shows (Epcot has a superb firework show). So, as I had a very Star Wars like day on Wednesday I thought I would depict a Star Wars Disney issued postcard, one in the Wonder ground series which I bought last year, and which is no longer on sale this year. It is a rather attractive one with a heavy black boarder and a plethora of main characters from the goodies and baddies down through the Star Wars years.

FUNCOAST WORLD
SKEGNESS
LINCOLNSHIRE
(BUTLIN’S HOLIDAY WORLDS)
Printed by
FINCOM HOLDINGS LTD
Ref: BS 0035
I am not sure Butlin’s comes even close to Disney World but as a kid Butlin’s was my favourite place (I have always, it seems, being a holiday park type of person – I blame my parents!!). We had three Butlins holidays as children and remember them all with great fondness, not so much the stag weekend one I spent at Skegness at Butlins a few years back (it’s an age thing I am sure, and it was not my sort of weekend to be fair, I had fun, even bought some postcards [never give up an option to obtain new postcards], but it was not a patch on my childhood memories of Butlins)
Older Butlins postcards are highly collected, but I wonder if anyone is currently collecting the more modern ones, like this one here, which does not even mention Butlin’s on the front (it does on the back). This copy here was posted in 1992 but not from the Butlins ‘Funcoast’ park area. It was sent as a competition entry so I assume it was a card someone had but did not use so entered a competition with it instead, so it may have been around for a while before it was used.

THE COUNTY BEAR JAMBOREE
WALT DISNEY WORLD
Ref: 0111-0357
“A real foot-stomping’ hoe down featuring the five Bear Rugs, greets visitors to Frontierland’s COUNTRY BEAR JAMBOREE”
(Text from reverse side of Postcard)
I will be spending most of today at the Magic Kingdom park where we are spending the afternoon on the rides and then having a meal at the Beauty and the Beast Dining Hall celebrating my son’s partners birthday. Then we are staying on in the park for the ‘Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party’ which goes on until midnight.
Whilst here in the afternoon I will probably pay another visit to this animatronic show. It is one of the oldest surviving attractions here in Florida and remains popular despite its age. This postcard depicts the bear band who are part of the show.

Clearly this is a piece of artwork based on the extremely popular animated film ‘Frozen’. The film was so popular that in the Epcot theme park they changed a ride in the Norway segment of the World Showcase from a trip around the history of Norway, called ‘Maelstrom’, to a ‘Frozen’ ride attraction. This attraction has regular long queue’s and wait lines. It is a major attraction in the Epcot theme park.
I was at Epcot today for a special event where the park celebrated its 35th birthday. Everyone attending received a free exclusive dated badge. There was also exclusive merchandise to be bought, T-Shirts, baseball cap and a special one-day exclusive Disney pin (I ended up with one of each, after a queue which lasted for one hour and forty-five minutes!!). It was a fantastic day to be in the park and we only found out about it by chance as we did not plan to be here for this special date, it was just a bonus for us to be able to attend.

This is an early American advertising postcard for a company which specialised in camp photographs, I assume of the type which appear on the front of this postcard. My reason for buying this was the depiction of an early television styled camera in the centre. Any postcards which depict early television equipment, especially cameras and studios are very collectible, although they are few and far between in the UK, so it is from America that I obtain most of mine. A card like this in America could easily cost you the equivalent of £6 to £10.

Last night I visited the Universal Studio’s ‘HALLOWEEN HORROR NIGHT’. I thought of this postcard because one of the areas we walked through, twice, was full of scary looking chainsaw welding clowns. I am fairly sure this ladybird book did not have a chapter on scary chainsaw welding clowns, but how cool would it have been if it had?
This is another of the souvenir items that I made for myself at the last STAMPEX show.

NEW YORK CITY
Published by

Published for
H. FINKELSTEIN & SON
Ref: R - 43956
These ‘By Night’ postcards were popular in America for many years from before the First World War right through until the 1970’s, although the printing processes would obviously change. Quite often the image used was a daytime photograph coloured over blue, to represent night, and then the windows of the building, or buildings depicted were coloured in yellow, as if the lights had been switched on. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between a painted over photograph and a painting, but in many cases, it is a combination of the two, which I suspect is the case here.
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
This postcard here was posted in 1914 and the 1 cent USA postage stamp has been cancelled with a superb ‘HOBOKEN N. J.’ machine applied wavy line cancel with an ‘I’ and a ‘c’ marked up within the wavy lines on the left side (possibly a machine reference number to indicate which machine or area/post office machine had been used). The cancel is dated 8th July 1914, Europe was about to engage in a fierce war and this postcard was intended for Holland so was making its way there. There is also an interesting oval mark/cachet with ‘B 30’ inside it. My knowledge is not good enough for me to know what this is but it was an official mark applied by the post office either in the US before departure or upon arrival in Holland.

HARTELIJK GEFELICITEERD
(“Congratulations”)
Unknown Dutch Publisher
A nice ‘Congratulations’ postcard artwork design which depicts a young child (popular and often used on postcard designs during the inter-war years). Here the young child is flying an aeroplane and appears to have dropped a sealed envelope which can be seen in the design. A nice simple attractive postcard image.
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
This has nice usage. A 1 ½ cent definitive stamp issue cancelled with a Haarlem slogan cancellation:
‘POSTZEGELS S-RECHTS – BOVEN IN DEN HOEK! – VLUGGER VERZENDING’
(“POST STEPS S-RIGHT INTO THE HOOK! FLIGHTS SHIPPING”)
The Haarlem cancel is dated 30th Oct 1937 (30 – X – 1937) and is a nice clean and clear example of this cancellation.

SWEDEN
Postal Stationery Post Card
1978
This is a very simple but lovely postcard which has pre-printed postage in the form of what I believe is a postman using a sledge to make his way on his rounds. This postage has been cancelled with what I believe to be a first day of issue cancellation dated 8/3/1978 from Stockholm. This is the type of postal history related post card item that I like to collect. These are mainly collected by stamp and postal history collectors rather than true postcard collectors which I think is a shame as some are really nice, maybe simple in design, but still attractive items.
