Avoca is where the BBC television series ‘Ballykissangel’ was filmed so I was keen to pay it a visit and it was only an hour away from where my mate has his property. Unfortunately, I was surprised to find that I was only able to buy one postcard which depicted the village and had any connection with the TV programme (but I did visit on a bank holiday and the Post Office was closed and this may be a further source of cards – this just means I have a reason to come back next time). Despite this single multi-view postcard being my only find I loved the village itself and it was nice to see the pub (bottom left corner) which has been made famous by the programme. The countryside around this village is lovely and as a bird watcher I was pleased to see several Red Kites flying overhead.

BARACK OBAMA

IRELAND

Published by

USEFUL GIFTS LTD

The American President visited Ireland in 2011 and gave a speech in Dublin on 23rd May. This image here is a famous one of him drinking a pint of Guinness although the name has been covered with a clover leaf. Obama is one of many, many Americans who has been found to have an Irish descendant somewhere in his past.

This particular postcard, which is a large sized card, was everywhere I went and could be found in all the major tourist area shops. It seemed to be a very popular postcard but then Ireland is a very popular holiday spot for Americans and this card seemed to be aimed at them.

As an Irish person I was disgusted at the likes of Obama being depicted as a stage Irishman. When he came to Fermanagh a couple of years ago for what was a G7 summit or something he had barbed wire put around the venue. How dare he?

QUAYS IRISH RESTAURANT

TEMPLE BAR, DUBLIN

We ate here twice and had two cracking meals and we were delighted with the food and the atmosphere. They were busy both times but this just showed that it was definitely a good place to eat. I recommend the BBQ Chicken wing starter (superb – I saw lots of people eating these on our first visit so tried them on our second) and Jo said the Guinness stew was well worth trying. When the bill came there was a free advert postcard in one side of the folder to take as a souvenir. Here is that very postcard.

BUTLIN’S MINEHEAD

Ref - M14

Fountain and Monorail

When we were children me and my brother, Andy, used to be taken on holiday by our parents to the Butlin’s holiday camp in Minehead. I loved it there and I have very fond memories of my several holidays there. I still have some of the postcards I bought on these holidays although at the time I was only buying ‘Animal’ related postcards so I never bought any featuring the actual Butlin’s Camp. This is probably a shame as Butlin’s postcards are highly sought after and can sell for several pounds each. As a result of this I have had to go back and buy postcards like this many years later.

I remember riding in these monorails many, many times and I also stood on the displayed fountain.

For me it is the nostalgia aspect of really enjoyable times that makes me buy these, and I wonder if this is not the reason lots of other people do to and is why they are still extremely popular.

BUTLIN’S MINEHEAD

Panorama – Beach and Camp

This copy was posted in June 1971

This photograph is looking down on the Butlin’s camp and shows it in full although little of real substance can be defined as the photograph was taken from some distance away from the hill that juts out into the sea to one side of Minehead. The one slightly interesting thing to see is the rows of cabins which people stayed in which is identified by all of the brown coloured areas as the roof of these chalets (as they were properly called) were brown. This is a view of the camp which I never saw as we never went to the area from which this photograph was taken.

8th April 2016

Yesterday (on the 7th) I attended my Military History Club for a talk and display by ex-Wing Commander Chris Finn. He spoke about the history of the ‘Buccaneer’ bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. He gave a superb and highly entertaining talk about the aircrafts initial days through to its end when it became a little too long in the tooth to continue. For me the most interesting bit was when he mentioned the use of the Buccaneer in the first Gulf War in 1991 (but more about this later). At the end of it I found myself wanting to head home and look through my postcards and see how many I had which displayed this fascinating aircraft.

RAF at RAF Brize Norton, Sept 1991

During yesterday’s talk Chris talked about the Buccaneer and it’s work during the first Gulf War in 1991 and showed film of bridges which were blown up by this low level bomber which had its first official war usage during this campaign. When Chris mentioned this it immediately brought to mind two postcards which I obtained not long after the war ended on a stall at a Steam Rally in Southend. This was the first, and subsequently only, time that I came across postcards published in a series called ENTHUSIATS (this is the correct spelling) MILITARY COLOUR SLIDES and which were published by EMCS QUALITY POSTCARDS.

This image, and the one on the postcard below, were both taken during the Gulf War and show the planes decked in desert paintwork. I collected Gulf War postcards and had added these two to my collection. After yesterday’s talk I am now even more pleased that I did.

Chris talked about how the Buccaneer bombers were brought in to work alongside the Tornado aircraft and that the Buccaneers were an important part of the initial tactical plans around the bombing of bridges and airports (something which the Buccaneer crews were specially trained in). As a result I thought I would also post this Tornado related postcard, as it seemed relevant and was also obtained at the same time as the two postcards above, and with the one depicted below.

I am sitting in front of the TV at this very moment adding cards to the webpage and watching the 2015 film ‘Jurassic World’. So I can-not imagine why I thought of this particular postcard!!

Avantcard have a reputation for printing artwork on their postcards for free. Artists just have to apply to have their artwork included. This 2015 issued postcard came about as a result of this system.

Avantcard Number #18319

2015 was the year of the sheep and who can resist a sheep made out of what look to be potatoes? I am not sure I have heard of a vegetable artist before but I am open to different art ideas and approaches and to be fair it does look like a sheep.

Another design printed under the Avantcard artist free printing offer.

QSL RADIO CARDS

These are cards which were sent out by private radio enthusiasts to confirm receipt of a radio message from another enthusiast. Often these radio messages were received from all around the world and private radio users would build up a collection of these cards. These are not always postcard backed but many were. Literally millions of these were sent out and they vary in quality from just the radio receivers call sign number being on the front right through simple home drawn and made cards up to high quality images and designs.

Fifteen years ago, before the height of eBay and intense collecting these QSL cards were almost valueless and you could pick up boxes of them few just a few pounds. Those days are over now though and thematic and topical (Topical is the American version of Thematic) collectors now seek out unusual QSL cards which fit into their themes. Over the years I had picked up some cheap bundles for my basic collection but now I hunt down any with a Television connection.

TESLA

CZECHOSLOVAKIA

This one is a real cracker (and an eBay buy) but then how could I resist such a lovely looking TV set depicted on a postcard. This one is not a true postcard backed card but who would care?

CAT DESIGN

VENEZUELA

This card was sent by a Dr Enrique Jose Berrizbeitia to a radio operator in Canada in 1959. I saw this on eBay and thought that I had to have it. The adult cat depicted is a female and a number kittens are shown on the overhead radio cable wires, or electrical cables. Now, is it me or are these depicted cats basically based on the Tom cat character from the cartoon ‘Tom & Jerry’ animated shorts? I think it is obvious that they are and as such this nicely fitted into my television series. It is a lovely image and one I think shows off what can be found in any good QSL selection.

100 YEARS OF ANZAC – THE SPIRIT LIVES 2014 – 2018”

DOWNLOAD THE APP AT – www.dva.gov.au/gtfd

This postcard is an official release which advertises the app for this special commemoration. The image shows someone holding an iPad which has an image from the app images. Gallipoli was of course the WWI assault in the Dardanelles which involved so many Australian soldiers. An interesting card and one which appears to be connected to an official programme of events under the heading of ‘100 Years of Anzac – The Spirit Lives 2014 -2018’.

‘LAUNCHYCAT STUDIO’

I met Lee at a Memorabilia fair at the NEC Birmingham in 2014. He had a stand in the artist’s area. I liked his designs and was pleased that he had postcard size prints available for sale. I also liked the fact that some of these had a Doctor Who connection.

This first design shows a dragon on top of a Gold Dalek. The dragon is actually from the animated film ‘How to train Your Dragon’ (a 2010 computer animated film by Dreamworks Animation). The dragon in the film is called ‘Toothless’.

When I met Lee he very kindly signed my copy of this card. Although plain backed they are postcard size and are smashing little items.

YORK MINSTER

“THE ‘BLUE PETER’ BOSSES COMPETITION 1986”

‘Three of the six bosses children from the United Kingdom designed for the new south transept vault following the fire in 1984. ‘The raising of the Mary Rose’ by Joanna Biggs; ‘The Rose Window survives the flames’ by Laura Smith; ‘Hand cupping a starving child’ by Tim Hutchinson’

‘Text from reverse side’

OFFICIAL YORK MINSTER POSTCARD

The 1984 fire at York Minster was a major news story and a number of postcards were issued showing the Minster on fire and subsequent damage images. The postcards were extremely popular and were highly sought after at the time. I put together a collection of them myself as I was always interested in modern disaster postcards.

This postcard here is connected to the fire as it shows three of the winning designs for replacement bosses in the Minster. The card is doubly special to me as it is also connected to Television through the competition being run through the television programme Blue Peter.

(There was a second postcard showing the other three bosses which made up the total of six winning designs. I do have a copy of this second card but need to dig it out before I can depict it – when found it will appear here)

GUATEMALA

UN CENTAVO – Black and red lilac on white stock

Issued 1897

This postal stationery issue was one of a series issued for the Central American Exhibition. The cards were valid from 1st January 1897 until 30th March 1898 and during this time no other cards were to be used in the country. The stamp design was the same on all the cards of this issue but the headings and views were different. This is the lowest value card issued, Un Centavo (1 centavo), and the image on the top left is of a steam train making this an interesting card for those who collect train postcards.

I paid £6 for this card which I think is a fair price.

DACHAU CONCENTRATION CAMP

DACHAU, GERMANY

I have an interest in World War II history and collect all related postcards but even I found it strange that postcards were sold depicting the ovens at Dachau. I am not sure exactly how old these two postcards are but I strongly suspect they are from the 1950’s. I actually bought these two cards last week in a fantastically tatty old antique junk shop in Kilkenny in Ireland. He had a box of postcards on the counter and when I asked him he said they were 1 euro each. To be fair 98% of the box was of no interest to me at all but I did find six cards, which included these two.

The centre line of text on the reverse side reads:

‘Foto Augustin, Dachau, Sudetenlandstr. 1, Telefon 482’

The top postcard has one image of the monument and two of the crematorium ovens. The bottom postcard depicts the line of huts and another memorial. The huts were of course mostly destroyed later with just a couple kept for visitors to see when they visit here. I myself paid a visit here some years ago when I visited the Munich area. Personally I am a firm believer that people should visit here to see and learn the horrendous things that occurred here and hopefully learn from this so that this never happens again.

AVANTCard

“AUSTRALIA”

This unusual piece of work by Tegan Iversen is a drawing with digital colouring titled ‘Soy Sauce 2014’. This is an Avantcard issue from 2015 which has the individual issue number #18977.

I like unusual and for reasons that I can-not explain fully this one caught my eye. Mind you I do like Soy sauce and have seen and used those little Soy filled plastic fish shaped bottles.

AVANTCard

Avantcard is the Australian equivalent of our ‘Boomerang’ Rack cards in the UK and ‘Max Racks’ in the US. All these companies produce free advertising postcards which are placed out in spinners or flat racks. These type of cards have now been issued since the early 1990’s, I believe Avantcard started in 1992. As a result of this there is now, and has been for some years, competition to produce more unusual items to place in the racks to make people take them (if the design is basic then often the cards stay put and static for some time – in my local cinema where there is a Boomerang rack there has been times when the same design(s) have stayed put for months). Therefore, anything unusual tends to grab the interest. Over the last few years in both Australia and especially in the Orient and Asian areas of production the back of these cards have become less postcard like. Sometimes they are information backed and sometimes there is even a picture on both sides. The important thing to collectors of these cards is that they all have the Avantcard Logo and have the appropriate number (all the Avantcard issues have a separate issue number).

This item here has the Avantcard logo on the back and is card number #19067 (and was issued in 2015):

“TAKE A REFRESHING DRIVE TO THE SOUTHERN FORESTS REGION”

EXPERIENCE EXTRAORDINARY WESTERN AUSTRALIA

NORTHCLIFFE, SOUTHERN FORESTS REGION

AIR FRESHENER

Sealed in a cellophane bag this is a thick card which has a die cut, tree shaped, car air freshener which can be pushed out and hung in your vehicle, it even has the string loop with which to do this with attached via a punched hole top centre (see below image for reverse side where the string can be seen).

Is this a postcard? Err…emmm… not truly, but I’m keeping it anyway as an unusual ‘Avantcard’ issue.

REVERSE SIDE

MAGIC POST – A – BOOK

“DIDDY MEN – AND THE MAGIC BOX”

This cracking little item arrived today (5th April 2016) all the way from Australia and was kindly sent to me by Willy Allan. This is both a fantastic item and an unusual one. Is it a postcard? Not in the true sense but in my mind it is a novelty ‘Postcard’ like item and with its television connections as well it is a joy to be able to have this in my collection.

The ‘Diddy Men’ were of course characters connected to the comedian Ken Dodd and they appeared in his television series and in his theatre shows. As such there is an interest in connected items as these characters have not been seen for many years now. Interestingly these characters were not created by Ken Dodd, contrary to belief, but had existed in local mythology and had even been mentioned previously by comedian Arthur Askey.

Ken Dodd came from the area where these were known and used them initially as an unseen joke in his stage appearances but later puppets did make an appearance and from this they also made an appearance in his television programme in the 1960’s.

This item was published in Great Britain by ‘World Distributors (Manchester) Limited’ but unfortunately no date is given so it is a little difficult to age this item beyond the fact that it is old (my personal opinion is that this is from either the late 1960’s or, possibly more likely, the early 1970’s).

But who cares how old it actually is or for that matter what it is worth as it is a cracking item (its value is another good question and as I have never seen one before and there is currently none on eBay or on the Amazon book site I am going to say that the price is speculative … maybe £5 to £10?)

Many Thanks Willy, this is a cracking item

Magic Post-a-Book

This is the back cover of this unusual item and it is here where the postcard connection can clearly be seen as the layout is definitely that of a basic postcard. You can also see the TEAR HERE which appear top right. This is beside the perforated inner line which goes from the top down and across the bottom and back up the left side (you can just about see the perforated line if you look closely). Once sealed and posted the receiver could tear along these lines and have a basic little book.

INSIDE THE POST-BOOK

Information re copyright and publishing can be seen on the inside cover on the left side. On the right side is the first page of the book enclosed within this unusual post item.

THE NEW DUNBRODY IRISH EMIGRANT EXPERIENCE

NEW ROSS, COUNTY WEXFORD, IRELAND

The ‘Dunbrody Famine Ship’ is a reproduction of an 1840’s emigrant vessel with an attached experience which tells the story of those Irish emigrants who left Ireland for America and Canada. When you actually board the reproduction ship itself you are told the history behind such ships which transported people with often very little space and food. In-fact there was a common situation where a 20% death rate was not uncommon (one scare story relates to a 50% death rate) and this why these ships were nicknamed ‘Coffin Ships’. When you go below decks actors portray actual known passengers who tell you their story and the steerage passengers story is not a happy one. The journey would take around six weeks, possibly longer with bad weather, and with only sea water to wash with and buckets for toilets, which were used by groups of people it is probably no surprise that people did die. One fact which the tour narrator is glad to pass on is that the actual Dunbrody (the real ship this copy is based on – the real one ran aground in Newfoundland and was not recovered) had a very good survival rate and in fact very few died on board this particular ship during its many sailings.

Entry to the experience is 10 euros for an adult and the ticket you receive is a reproduction of an actual PASSENGERS’ CONTRACT TICKET which makes for a nice souvenir of a visit here. My ticket is shown here.

DUNBRODY FAMINE SHIP

NEW ROSS

There is a nice little souvenir shop attached to this attraction (and a nice café upstairs where I had a nice slice of chocolate fudge cake) which sells postcards of the local area and those with an Irish touch. They also sell three exclusive postcards which depict the Dunbrody.

All three of these depict the ship in photographs taken by Dagnis Abols and are shown as being published by the ‘Dunbrody Famine Ship, New Ross, Co Wexford, Ireland’.

This one depicted here shows the ship in the morning mist and is a lovely atmospheric image which almost catches that era of the early sailings

DUNBRODY FAMINE SHIP

NEW ROSS, IRELAND

This image depicts the Dunbrody at night all lit up with its gang plank visible and the area of quay with its street lights. This area was from where these ships actually set sail and the quay itself is circa 1849, so has a history behind it as well

THE EMIGRANT FLAME, NEW ROSS

This globe of the world has an actual flame within it which I assume is kept alight all day (it was alight when I passed by it and took my photographs). This is just outside the entrance to the Dunbrody Experience and the masts of the ship (the only part of the ship which was not reproduced exactly as the originals were wood whereas here they are metal because of health and safety rules re climbing up them) can be seen behind the globe set up. This image was clearly taken during the evening and the reduced light does make this look very attractive.

If you ever find yourself in this area of Ireland (about 15mins drive from Waterford which is a tourist location) then I recommend a visit to this attraction.

‘FUNTIME’

“A Collection from the range of the World’s finest hand painted PVC Character Figurines from the figurines specialists ‘Funtime’ P.O. BOX 99 Wembley HA9 8XT UK”

This unusual advertising postcard covers several themes but mainly Television, Film and Disney. So this fits nicely into my collection and it also has characters from my favourite Disney Animated film ‘Robin Hood’. Also depicted are characters from Snow White and the seven dwarfs, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Minnie and Pluto, Dumbo, Bambi, Pinocchio, Lady & the Tramp, Winnie the Pooh and friends and characters from the Jungle Book. Non Disney characters include Yogi Bear, Scooby Doo, Top Cat, The Flintstones and four little Paddington Bears.

This is the type of postcard I love coming across and am always happy to buy.

H. B., Ltd

ENTIRE BRITISH PRODUCTION

No. 6087

“Inspector! I’ve ‘ad a bit of luck! – I’ve got ‘Slippery Sam’ here!”

This one was a ‘Must Have’ postcard for me as it nicely fits into two of my collecting themes, one of which is my main theme, but more about that one later. Firstly, this depicts an early police officer, who in fact is the main component of the design. I particularly like the long raincoat he is wearing as I was given one of these when I first joined but they ceased being issued very soon afterwards (and to be fair no-one was wearing these when I first went out anyway – they remained in most people’s lockers, normally folded up at the bottom. I think they are almost considered as collector’s items now days).

The other theme connection is a bit more tenuous but I’ll explain. There is a Police Box included in the image and in non Dr Who postcards these are actually quite rare. Although clearly used here in its correct form almost everyone now days knows that the Doctor’s time machine is shaped like a police box. In-fact the Metropolitan Police did try and copyright the police box but lost their application because it was stated that more people now recognize this as being the TARDIS (Dr Who’s time machine) than know anything about its original use. We now see this as a TARDIS rather than anything else – this just goes to show the affect a TV programme can have. And thus this can now fit into my ‘Television’ themed collection.
