LADYBIRD BOOK COVER POSTCARDS

From the boxed set of 100 Ladybird Book Covers

Used on the front with a Royal Mail ‘Ladybird Books’ Stamp 2017

Cancelled with a special AUTUMN STAMPEX 2017 special hand stamp.

This is another selection of the postcards which I had a ladybird stamp applied to and cancelled first day of issue at the STAMPEX show last year. I had a number of these done and I think these are quite attractive and made for some great souvenirs.

This particular postcard was very suitable because the book cover does feature on the stamp that has been applied. This adds a little extra connection between the stamp and this postcard.

This is another of the postcards which depicts a cover which also is depicted on the applied stamp. Not all of the book covers appeared on postcards from this box set, but it was a bonus where they did.

This is another of the postcards which depicts a cover which also is depicted on the applied stamp, the card above does as well. All four of these ladybird books depicted on these four postcards were aimed at the younger aged children.

There is a light brown image printed in the background on this card of a volcano (I collect Volcano’s as a theme on postcard and this would be an unusual addition to that collection). I do think these early postal stationery cards from this area of the world are beautifully printed and I do enjoy seeking them out.

LOOKING FOR WORK

EVERYONE’S LOOKING FOR SOMETHING

Anonymous Publisher / Printer

This postcard has all the feel and look of a 1980’s issue, although very little detail is recorded on the actual card itself. Is it just an art card or is it, as I think, a political comment card? I picked this up last week at the Woking postcard fair and it was the image that caught my eye. It is also an example of how the lack of descriptive text on a postcard can leave its original source or reason for publication unknown to future collectors like me. I may never know why exactly this card was issued, but there is the chance that someone out there who bought the card upon its release does know – if that is you then let me know.

Another postcard in the massive output by this producer – these can be found in most museums, tourist sites and specialist shops all over the UK – Robert has all but cornered the ‘Modern’ postcard sales market, something Robert will, and should be remembered for

Ref: 01NS02

This is a superb piece of poster art and from a period I collect, WWII. I know have mentioned it many times, but Robert Opie does seem to find some very interesting images from his epic collection of advertising material. This card would fit into several collecting themes, Posters, Military, Medical and Advertising.

TOPPAN 3D postcards have been very collectible for some years now mostly due to the quality of their production and the many different topic they covered. Walt Disney themed ones are obviously going to be collected by both novelty card collectors and the many thousands of ‘Disney’ postcard collectors out there. I am a collector of both so when I saw this card on eBay recently I placed a bid and it eventually became mine.

MARGOT KIDDER …. RIP

Margaret Ruth Kidder

17th October 1948 – 13th May 2018

Canadian American actress best known for playing Lois Lane in the Christopher Reeve starring ‘Superman’ films but who also starred in Brian De Palma’s cult thriller ‘Sisters’ (1973) and the slasher movie ‘Black Christmas’ (1974). She also played the girlfriend of the main character in ‘The Great Waldo Pepper’ (1975) opposite Robert Redford. Another of her better-known appearances was as Kathy Lutz in the extremely successful horror movie ‘The Amityville Horror’ (1979).

SUPERMAN

THE MOVIE

You’ll believe a man can fly”

Anonymous Publisher / Printer

(the reverse postcard layout is very similar to that of postcards published/printed by ‘The Vintage Magazine Company’ and I suspect they had an involvement in this cards production if they were not responsible anonymously for its issue)

The Superman film came out in 1978 and I remember visiting the cinema to watch it. At the time it has special effects which were revolutionary, and as the adverts said: ‘You’ll believe a man can fly’. Margot Kidder was a superb Lois Lane and she went on to appear in the other movies as well, although due to some outspoken comments around the director of the second movie she only had a brief appearance in the third movie, returning for a better slot in the fourth (see below).

The news of the death of Margot Kidder slipped under the net with me and I have only just found out so this posting is a few days late, but as I was such a fan of the Superman movies (the IV one being an exception), and her part in these films I wanted to do my normal celebration of a life by depicting some related postcards.

This company produced a wide range of film poster postcards throughout the 1980’s and are remembered for the fact that they did all their reverse side printing in blue.

Superman IV was released in 1987 and had the main character stars from the previous films reprising their original roles; Christopher Reeve as Superman/Clark Kent, Margot Kidder as Lois Lane and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. Despite the original actors returning I suspect most people would agree that this is not the best of the Superman movies, and that description is probably being kind. Well, the movie might not have been great, but this film poster is superb.

There can be little doubt that that the film star that appears on more postcard issues than any other is Marilyn Monroe (however her name is spelt on the specific card!) I have a plan to do a little, or possibly large, single posting of Marilyn related postcards. She has appeared on both photographic and art design postcards and she remains a popular actress for postcard releases.

Film Poster Postcard

ANONYMOUS PUBLISHER / PRINTER

No Reference Number and no text details at all on reverse side

(This card just has a stamp box and a centre parting line – no other printing)

There was a period during the late 1980’s, and throughout the 1990’s when there were many postcards issued and printed by unknown people, nearly always without copyright permission and totally without permission of any authorised owners of the images. This is one of these postcards. These have become quite collectible, mainly I suspect because the images used rarely, and sometimes have never, appeared on postcard before, or since. So, to get these images into your collection you need to obtain these, to all intense and purposes, illegal postcards.

There was no postcard given out at the most recent Woking Postcard Fair last week, which I thought was a bit of a shame. So, this was the last card issued for the bi-annual event. I missed this event because I was away, so I did not get to pick up a copy of this card. Therefore, I was pleased to grab a copy from a dealer at this year’s event. I was especially pleased because I think this is a beautiful design.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALICE!

COLLAGE

By

BRIAN PARTRIDGE

APRIL 1990

I have always liked Brian’s work, and I am aware that he is a big fan of the Alice in Wonderland stories. Brian often incorporates Alice references in his artwork, or he produces artwork like this which fully references the theme. Sometimes Brian produced cards himself in very small print runs and despite the number fact that the number printed has not been recorded here I do think that this will have been quite a small run.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This has a very basic reverse layout but has the added bonus of being signed by Brian Partridge, the artist. Brian quite often signs in pencil, as he has done here.

HAND-MADE ‘PERSONAL’ SOUVENIR

GERMAN PRISONER OF WAR

WORLD WAR I

IN MEMORY OF MY TIME AS A

GERMAN P.O.W. AT

SUTTON VENY, WILTSHIRE

This is a photograph of six World War I German prisoners of war with a family that I assume are a British farm family to whom the soldiers were attached to perform farm labour work. I know that it was the case that P.O.W. soldiers were used on British farms and were needed as there was a shortage of male labour as people were away fighting, even more so as the war progressed into further years.

The photograph has been attached to the card by the person cutting slots at each corner and making little strips which hold the photo to the card.

A message in German has been written underneath. Thanks to the efforts of someone else I have information that the message, at the least the initial part, reads as “In memory of my time as a German POW [prisoner?] at Sutton Veny [although the person who translated this thought it was Sutton Verney – but it is definitely VENY]. Sutton Veny is located in Wiltshire county, and it was a WWI army training camp as well as a POW Camp and was used as such during both WWI and WWII. So, there is a strong military history at this location. After this on the card there is what I believe is the soldier’s name – it is difficult to make out as I have no knowledge of German at all, but it could be something like ‘E. Wuisberg’ or ‘E. Weisberg’. Then comes what I suspect was the soldiers home location, which seems to be a very long word beginning with an ‘R’ [any help with what this could be would be appreciated]. The next line is a single word which seems to be FRIEDRICHSTRZ or could this be FriedrichstraBe, which is how Friedrichstrasse is written in German, but to honest I am mostly guessing here.

Whatever this mans name was he produced what I believe is a unique card, and I am wondering if he produced it for the family depicted in the photograph. Perhaps this is why the card is still here, in the UK, because it was given as a gift to the depicted family? It is known that many of the German P. O. W’s grew attached to the families they worked with and judging from this photograph the group seem to at least be accepting each other, especially the children sat at the soldier’s feet.

I bought this card at the recent Woking postcard fair and it is a superb example of the type of military history related card that I like. I think this is more a piece of military and social history, and local history, rather than just a simple postcard – a unique handmade item, which just happens to have used a postcard as its format.

If you can help with any of the front hand-written text, then please do make-contact with us via the contact details above – many thanks

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Here you can where a previous person has written a partial translation (with wrong spelling for ‘Veny’)

Was this worth £5? I certainly think so.

VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM

OCEAN LINERS: SPEED AND STYLE EXHIBITION

Official Postcards

This is the exhibition we visited on Monday (14/05/18). I thought it was superb but then I am a big Ocean Liner fan, that is I am a fan of the old-style liners from the pre and post war years up until the passing of the Canberra and the slow decline of the Queen Elizabeth II. I am not a fan of the massive tower block cruise ships that you see these days, to me they just look like massive shopping centres at sea. So, here are the postcards from the exhibition and some photographs which I took whilst there which complement the postcard images.

The other piece I wanted to see was the fragment of an overdoor panel from the first-class lounge of the Titanic. This was found floating on the surface of the sea after the sinking of the Titanic. Sir Peter Scott was a famous naturalist and founder of the Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust (he was also the son of the famous Antarctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott who famously died along with his entire party on an Antarctic expedition in 1912). Peter Scott was a well-known television presenter in early wildlife programmes, but he was also an accomplished artist and designed the panda logo for the World Wildlife Fund. Royle Publications issued a range of postcards depicting his paintings, mostly depicting his much-loved wildfowl, ducks and geese to you and me.

Published by

THE ART GROUP LIMITED

Ref: 9289

This is a postcard from what was a reasonable sized series of images taken from the famous Tom & Jerry animated short films. As a child I grew up with Tom & Jerry cartoons being played on the television on what felt like every weekend, and some evenings midweek as well. I thus became a huge fan and now have several compilation DVD box-sets of them. They seem to have gone out of favour recently, probably, or so I have heard, because of the violence contained in the stories. It’s a shame, as the violence is unreal, comical in its interpretation and no character ever really suffers any permanent physical damage, but we seem to live in a more perceived and enforced ‘sensitive’ time, but I hope we don’t lose access to the Tom & Jerry cartoons because above all they were fun to watch.

FALKLAND ISLANDS

Photograph by

Stephen Whitley (Falkland Islands)

Printed by

ARCH PRESS (LONDON) LTD

For the past two months now I have been preparing a display I am going to be doing later in the year. This display is 160 sheets of mounted material on the ‘Falklands War 1982’. As a result of all the research I have been doing and checking of details around items in my collection (postcards, stamps, covers, propaganda leaflets and other paper related memorabilia) I am currently very much tied up in this group of islands. I have some postcards which are from the actual islands, all printed in the UK as there are no facilities to print them on the islands. They are designed to be sold to the tourists who come to the islands on the Antarctic cruise ships, so many of them are kept as personal souvenirs. I do have some which were posted by British soldiers posted to the islands, but to be honest modern view postcards of the Islands are quite hard to source, or are expensive for modern issues, often priced around £5, which is quite steep for a view postcard from the last thirty years or so. This one is a good example, mint unused but still cost me £3, not including postage and packing. It does fit nicely into my collection but came along too late to fit into my display though, sadly.

ARCTIC TREASURE

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

By

SERGEY GORSHKOV (Russia)

Animal Portraits Finalist 2017

Official Museum Postcard

Ref: 16563

“Carrying its trophy from a raid on a snow goose nest, an Arctic Fox heads for a suitable burial spot to store it for later. Vast numbers of snow geese breed on Wrangel Island in the Russian Far East. Though they actively defend their nests, a fox may steal up to 40 eggs a day”

(Text from reverse side of above postcard)

This is clearly a square shaped postcard, a shape of card which has been popular with the Natural History Museum for several years now, although I noticed that the Victoria & Albert Museum also had some postcards on sale this size and shape and well on my visit yesterday, especially a number of David Bowie ones from a recent museum exhibition there. This is a popular size I believe because it is different and catches the eye. In the past these slightly larger square cards were a little bit more expensive, but yesterday I found them all to be the same price as the standard sized postcards, something which I thought came as a bonus. I shall be posting some more square shaped cards in the very near future.

THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

LONDON

AN ORIGINAL DRAWING OF THE MUSEUM

By the Architect

ALFRED WATERHOUSE (1830 – 1905)

I visited here yesterday as well, where I bought this postcard and another 14 postcards as well (not including a bundle I bought in the Geological Society shop which is also located in this museum, in an area which used to be the Geology Museum, before this was amalgamated with the Natural History Museum some years back). I often give out a singular piece of advice for when visiting any location with a view to collecting the postcards of that location, and this advice especially relates to big museums (and, funnily enough, Walt Disney Theme Parks, where I myself realised this fact). This is the fact that many of these locations have more than one shop or sales area and that it is good practice to visit each - and - every one of them and to search inside them all for postcards, in racks and these days also often on display surfaces with related books, notebooks and other sales items which may have the same image used on them as on a postcard sold alongside them. The postcard I am going to post above is of an Arctic Fox and it was found amongst a display of items which had this image on the front, but most importantly it was found in just one of the three shops located (again not including the Geological Society shop which makes a fourth shop) inside the museum selling Natural History Museum merchandise. Also, it was found in the shop furthest away from the main front entrance, right at the back of the museum, sort of out of the way, I only came across it because I went in through a side entrance opposite the new side entrance to the V&A Museum, otherwise I too would have missed this shop and therefore missed out on this postcard.

This was one of the postcards I bought from my visit to the V&A Museum yesterday. This is a superb museum and it has so many varied artefacts in its collection that they can constantly issue new postcards depicting a whole range of different items fitting into all sorts of themes. They also issue special exhibition exclusive postcards which are often only on sale for a restricted period, often the duration of the exhibition and a short time afterwards.

Yester day I picked up postcards from three separate exhibitions, including the one which I visited to see, ‘Ocean Liners: Speed and Style’. I came away with the following numbers of cards:

OCEAN LINERS: SPEED & STYLE – 10 cards

DAVID BOWIE – 12 cards

WINNIE THE POOH – 8 cards

BASIC MUSEUM ISSUES – 19 cards, including this one here.

Over the coming weeks I will show you some of these postcards and you will see for yourselves what an eclectic display they produce.

We have been back in London all day today, thus this rather late posting. We have been to the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Natural History Museum and obtained many postcards from both locations. These I will post on the webpage in future posts, probably over a few weeks seeing how many I have bought! This postcard nicely encapsulates our day as we had several rides on London Underground trains, especially the long one from Tower Hill to South Kensington (where the museums are located). This long trip was on the Circle Line, but today we also travelled on the Piccadilly Line and the Bakerloo line, quite a day. Check out our facebook page where I placed lots of images of the postcard racks at these museums and some images from the superb ‘Ocean Liners: Speed and Style’ exhibition we visited at the V&A. Please take a look at the facebook page and like it to receive all the updates that appear here as many extra images and much information is placed here which does not go onto the webpage.

Helicopters are a popular postcard theme, but they appear on cards far less than their more common aeroplane cousins. This one I suspect was a free advertising postcard, or possibly a card given out free as a publicity souvenir to those who travelled in one of these helicopters on what I also suspect were tourist flights, possibly to oversee the superb mountains that are shown here in the background. If it was free, as I suspect, it was a superb freebie.

This lovely postcard was sent to me by my friends David and Pat Rye. It depicts an old advertising poster published by the ‘Mumbles Railway’ company, the cards from whom I have collected for many years. This one depicts an old police officer and I suspect this was partially the reason the card was sent to me, although what has been applied to the reverse side does make this a very interesting and unusual addition to my collection – see below.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Here the official police station cachet has been applied – DYFED-POWYS POLICE / 12 FEB 2018 / CHIEF SUPERINTENDENT PEMBS DIVISION – this is from the area where David and Pat live. Somehow, I assume through a contact or friend, they have got the officers on duty at this station to all sign this card, including the Inspector and one of the CSI’s (Crime Scene Investigator). The addition of these signatures makes this a very unusual card, which I was delighted to receive, so my thanks go out to David and Pat yet again.

CUNARD R.M.S. “QUEEN ELIZABETH”

Tomorrow I am back in London and visiting the Victoria & Albert Museum to see their current special exhibition on Ocean Liners titled ‘OCEAN LINERS: SPEED & STYLE’. I have always been fascinated by the old ocean liners, and not just the Titanic upon which I have often referred. As a result of my interest I have collected modern ocean liner postcards, especially those from the post WWII era. This card has an image of the Queen Elizabeth, although one which has some marks upon it, but then I bought this one for what is on the other side.

R.M.S. QUEEN ELIZABETH

Across the bottom of this sticker the cachet ‘POSTED ON BOARD’ has been applied in blue. Under this there is a purple coloured cachet reading:

QUEEN ELIZABETH 2

HIGH SEA MAIL

PAQUEBOT

There is also the 1988 26p value Royal Mail ‘Queen Elizabeth’ stamp applied top right which has been cancelled with a ‘50TH ANNIVERSARY YEARS RMS QUEEN ELIZABETH / SOUTHAMPTON / 10 MAY 1988’.

The combination of cachets, stamp and cancel make this a very nice collectable, and one which I was amazed to pick up for just 50p at the Woking postcard fair on Friday, a real bargain I thought.
