FALKLANDS WAR

PHILATELIC RELATED BOOKS AND MONOGRAPHS

I have a specialised collection of Falklands War related material. I also have a large part of this mounted on sheets for display (see tab 'FALKLANDS WAR PHILATELIC DISPLAY' for this complete exhibition display). To obtain all the related information to write these sheets up I have obtained a selection of reference works. Shown below are the books I have so far managed to find.

A CATALOGUE OF FALKLAND ISLANDS POSTCARDS 1950 - 1982

Monograph No. 9

Issued September 2008

By

MARGERY WHARTON

An interesting and fully illustrated book (softcover) which covers postcards sold on the Islands right up until the commencement of the war. Some Argentinian collectors used some of the later postcards to obtain occupation related cancels.

AIRMAIL

Monograph No. 4

June 1996

Published by

THE FALKLAND ISLANDS PHILATELIC STUDY GROUP

This thin volume, or monograph, from the study group covers the pre war airmail service between the Falkland Islands and the Mainland. This is an interesting era that came before the Argentine invasion and propaganda wise is directly connected to the lead up to the conflict. I collect some of this material so when I saw this for just £1 I had to have it.

THE FALKLAND ISLANDS PHILATELIC STUDY GROUP

This is a nice addition to the information contained in the book posted immediately below. This one is in full colour and gives some major updates that have been ascertained since the publication of the earlier publication below.

THE FORCES POSTAL HISTORY OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS & THE TASK FORCE

By

J. A. DAYNES

For anyone who collects the mail related to the ships involved in the Task Force sent down to the Falkland Islands after the Argentine Invasion then this is the book you need. It lists all the ships and shows all the ships cachets and marks used during this period. It also lists and displays the cachets and marks for all of the army, RAF and other military units involved.

Pages from the above release - this is an interesting section as I collect HMS ENDURANCE mail from around the period before during and after the war.

WAR IN THE FALKLANDS

Philatelic Magazine Supplement

Published as a supplement to the PHILATELIC MAGAZINE, London - November 1983

Produced only a year after the war this has some timely notes and details from the military postal history from the conflict.

Although only a supplement this is packed with some useful information spread over several articles.

Two pages from the above special magazine supplement

CONFLICT: THE FLAKLAND ISLANDS POSTAL SERVICE - 30TH MARCH - 14TH JUNE 1982.

MONOGRAPH No. 16

Published by

THE FALKLAND ISLANDS PHILATELIC STUDY GROUP.

Issued January 2015

An essential book for anyone collecting the mail from this period from the occupation period.

What I liked about this publication is the number of interesting posted items that are depicted, which does included one or two postcards.

The images here are all in colour (where colour is appropriate, there are some photographs taken at the time in black and white). This has some superb images and has the benefit of using items from a number of collections.

Page from the above book. You may be interested to know that a postcard used like the one depicted at the top of this page will now cost you in excess of £100 (possibly quite a bit more)

THE UPLAND GOOSE - JOURNAL OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS PHILATELIC STUDY GROUP - FALKLANDS WAR ISSUE

This may well have been the first published book(let) related to the philatelic material from the war and the story around all postal matters during this period. All the information contained in here is useful although some of it has been updated since after more information came to light, but this also contains information which has not been subsequently printed in more recent publications. This is now a very hard to source publication.

Post War stamps and some cancellations which were used in the area before and during the conflict.

A page depicting a range of cancellations used on the ilsands and the task force ships used during and just after the war. Information like this is essential to a collector like me.

THE FALKLANDS WAR - POSTAL HISTORY AND STAMPS OF THE ARGENTINE OCCUPATION 1982

By

J. D. DAVIS

This was the very first book related to the philatelic side of the war that I obtained. I got my copy direct from the author who kindly signed my copy for me. This is an important book because the author travelled to the Falkland Islands immediately after the liberation and worked in the post office there. He was also the first person to supply me with non-postcard related philatelic material for my collection.
