SIZI was the nickname for the late postcard published Jean Claude Sizler, known far better by this nickname ‘Sizi’. Besides being the artist for this postcard design he was also the postcard s publisher as the company ‘Edition Des Escargophiles’ was his own. Under this company a ‘large-number’ of French artists had their images published in what was often, as is the case here, a very low print run. This card was issued in a numbered edition of one hundred and fifty. Throughout the 1980’s, 1990’s and through to this current day (although it has lessened off over the last 6 – 8 years) there has been a strong tradition of publishing individual artist promotional postcards for postcard fairs (salons) and exhibitions. This is one of these cards.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

The postcards published by SIZI under his company ‘Edition des Escargophiles’ all have standard backs, which changed a little over the years, but kept the main components like the snail SIZI logo, bottom centre and the same limited-edition text bottom left. The stamp box pictorial image was used throughout the 1980’s.

This postcard went straight into my television themed collection. As a kid, and to be honest as an adult as well, I have always liked ‘The Muppets’, even the film versions. I have a large Muppets postcard collection and it never ceases to amaze me just how many there are out there. This Miss Piggy one is a good example of a more unusual issue. This was originally a free rack postcard in America. The company ‘Max Racks’ are one of America’s best known and much collected free rack card publisher.

I grew up as a kid under the threat of a nuclear war, and the history around the Atomic Bombs and their creation and use was historically of interest to me from a very young age. As a result, like so much of my collection, my interest has rolled over into collecting any related postcards, both depictions of atomic explosions and their story and those relating to the anti-nuclear protest groups that grew up in the post war years. So, it was the front image that caught my eye here, but the cards image has been chosen to represent an image connected to the world of drug abuse via word association. The card seems to have been issued to alert people, parents and guardians mostly I suspect, that drugs are referred to by different names, and to educate them on what to listen out for. This is an interesting use of a free postcard advertising card.

O…. “BERSAGLIERI”

Published by

CECAMI

Printed in Italy

Ref: 1284

A nice Italian army cartoon, although the exact comic reference is not clear to me yet. The Bersaglieri, which is what I believe this cartoon refers to is a corps of the Italian army that was created in 1836.

The notice on the card, to the left of the woman reads ‘TIRO AL BERSAGLIO’ which means ‘TARGET SHOOTING’, so maybe this is just about the attractiveness of the female and the lure to take a shot. Unfortunately, I do not have a date for the issue and the hand stamp date is unclear, but this was posted after 1967 (because one of the stamps used was issued that year, I think this was posted in the early 1970's, although the card itself could be from the late 1960's). This makes a nice addition to my ‘Military’ collection.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This is the type of postcard I really enjoy obtaining as it has loads of postal interest here. There are three definitive Italian stamps and a 1967 issued ‘Umberto Giordano’ commemorative stamp, all cancelled with ‘S. MARGHERITA’ date stamps (date unclear). It would appear to have been slightly underpaid postage wise as there is a printed letter ‘T’ with a hand written 60/90 which indicated that a fee was due for underpayment, possibly because this was an EXPRESS mail item as indicated by the lovely red ‘ESPRESSO (EXPRESS)’ label that was also applied. Just to finish up on all the interest here there is also an applied hotel cachet top left: HOTEL REGINA ELENA – S. MARGHERITA LIG. The postcard was posted to England so maybe the sender did not work out the postage correctly, but, the result does make for a fascinating reverse side, especially as the message is so short!

POSTCARD ISSUED IN RUSSIA

MOSCOW 1982

It is not often I am unable to give you any information about a postcard in my collection, but this is the case here. This is because all the text on this card, understandably considering the country of source, is in Russian, which I have no ability to translate (although from other cards in my collection I am aware that ‘Mockba’ is the spelling for Moscow).

Lack of knowledge about the image does not detract from my appreciation of it.

This is a British postcard issue released in the UK, so, I am guessing that it was produced to coincide with the Pope’s visit to the UK, which was in 1982, but this is a guess and not confirmed. I have mentioned several times that religion as a theme is little collected unless the card has some philatelic additions, which fortunately this one has – see below

As this hand stamp is related to the 1982 visit it again makes me believe the postcard, which was obviously around at this time, was prepared for the visit. The special hand stamp adds some value to this card, but to be honest it is still no more than £1, but I like special hand stamps, especially on postcards.

(Text from reverse side of Postcard)

The V & A museum has a special ongoing offer on postcards of any five for £3, which gives you one free as they are individually 75p each. When I visit I always buy postcards in bundles of groups of five different every time. This sometimes leads to me buying postcards I like but which I might not have bought individually. This was such a card, added to four others I had chosen to make it a free postcard. I like it, and it is unusual, but it does not really fit into any of my standard themes, but I didn’t mind.

Then, after buying this card, I was walking around the main museum and I came across the staircase depicted in the ink and pen picture on the postcard. What an amazing staircase. It is really-beautiful. I would probably have looked appreciatively at it as I walked past it anyway, but haven seen the postcard depicting artwork of it beforehand it gave me an added interest and lead to me taking some photographs of it (see below)

GIANT GROUND SLOTH (MEGATHERIUM AMERICANUM) SKELETON

Official museum postcard release

LARGE SQUARE SHAPED POSTCARD

“The giant ground sloth lived in South America around 10,000 years ago. Weighing up to 4,000 kilogrammes and measuring up to 6 metres in length, it was as big as modern elephants”

(Text from reverse side of Postcard)

Another of the museums great skeleton collection and one of my all-time favourites. On my visits I always make my way to where this ‘massive’ skeleton currently stands, in one corner of a long hallway filled with dinosaur and other extinct animal skeletons. The giant sloth was not a dinosaur of course but a later mammal that became extinct during the time of early man and many cite the human hunters of the time as being the reason for its extinction, although the reduction of suitable habitat has also been cited as contributing factor.

If you look the giant ground sloth up on ‘Wikipedia’ there is a photograph of this museum skeleton depicted as the main articles image.

Official museum postcard release

“The 5.6-metre-long Stegosaurus skeleton, known affectionally as Sophie, is 85 per cent intact; making it the most complete fossil specimen of Stegosaurus in the world. The specimen, found in Wyoming in the United States, was unveiled at the Natural History Museum, London in December 2014”

(Text from reverse side of Postcard)

This is a simple postcard image, but it shows a very important fossil skeleton from the Museum’s collection as this is, as mentioned in the descriptive text on the reverse side of the postcard, the most intact Stegosaurus skeleton so far discovered. Although an important skeleton it is one often missed by visitors to the museum because of its location. If you enter via the main massive and elaborate front facing entrance that most people use you may not get around to seeing this skeleton because it is around the back of the museum in a separate section which is often missed out, but, if you go in through the side entrance to the museum in Exhibition Road then you will be confronted by this skeleton which has pride of place just inside this entrance.

PHOTOGRAPH

Taken 14th May 2018

This is a photograph I took of this skeleton when I entered the museum via the Exhibition Road entrance. I took this before I saw the above postcard, but the two go together nicely.

This is a lovely series of paintings from a company based in the UK which is well known amongst modern postcard collectors. There cards from the 1950’s and 1960’s are particularly collected and are more sought after than the later issues, but this of course depends on what is depicted. Flowers are not a highly collected theme, despite how pretty some of these can look. So, this card, and others from this series should not cost more than £2 at most, probably nearer £1.

Angel Heart was a film that came out in 1987 starring a much younger better looking (pre-plastic surgery/Botox or whatever it was that has affected his face) Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro in what is described as an American neo-noir horror film adaptation of a novel by William Hjortsberg called ‘Falling Angel’. I have only seen this film once and although it was alright it is not really my type of thing, but, having said that I think this film poster for it is superb. Artwork film posters have always been my favourite over those which are photographic in content.

MESSAGE SIDE

(Technically the FRONT side of this folded item)

Every so often you get the opportunity to buy something really-unusual and potentially quite scarce. As you will have realised by now I collect Disney themed postcards and, to be fair, some other Disney items as well. A fortnight ago I was offered this strange item here. It is from 1974 and was available in both the Florida Walt Disney World theme park and the original Disneyland park in California.

I had to have this, mostly because it is possibly I will never be offered another one again, especially one I can afford. Disney merchandise, especially early theme park material. This item would be sought after by those who collect novelty postal items and by the many Disney collectors out there who collect anything ‘Disney’ themed.

POSTAL DETAILS SIDE

(Technically the REVERSE side of this folded item)

Here you can see the side which appealed to me so much, and which allowed me to add this to my collection. It is not a postcard, but this side here has the basic layout of a postcard back, stamp box, address lines and a block of lines for the sender’s address (listed here as RETURN ADDRESS).

This also has a lovely little illustration of early Mickey Mouse pendant flags, being held by a different selection of arms and hands, one of which appears to be Mickey’s own arm and hand.

THE RIGHT SIDE IS PARTIALLY OBSCURED BY THE SEE-THROUGH PLASTIC ‘RECORD’ DISC THAT THIS FOLDER CONTAINS.

This long image depicts one of the early parades, titled as the Cavalcade of Characters along Main Street. Here some of the Disney characters can be seen, including the iconic Mickey Mouse himself. The interesting one for me is the Winnie the Pooh character as they no longer have him with the ‘Hunny’ pot on his head. This one here, with this pot on his head, nicely dates this image to the early years of the Walt Disney World park, although the copyright date of 1974 does prove this (Walt Disney World opened in October 1971). Although I keep mentioning Walt Disney World it seems this item here was available at Disneyland as well as both parks are mentioned on the message side.

Before I mention the swans just let me give you some details about this location. This is Lake Annecy in the Bornes Massif in Haute-Savoie region in France and the ‘Tournette’ mentioned in the title is ‘La Tournette’ the mountain in the background which is the highest mountain surrounding the lake.

Right, back to the swans… I mean, what the hell! Really? They are painted on? This seems even more unbelievable when you realise the island you can see is called ‘Swans Island’! Could they not find any swans? Could they not find a better painter to put them into the picture? They don’t even look real (at least the swans on the previous posting look right, way too small, but they look like swans otherwise). What is it with swans and postcards, especially this one. More importantly is it sad that I bought this postcard because the swans were so awfully applied to the image?

The postcard was posted from Annecy in 1934 with the French postage stamp applied to the front which was a common thing with French postcards from the earlier periods.

OK, these are either two of the ‘Biggest’ people ever, or the swans have shrunk, a lot! The composition of this postcard design is all out of proportion to real sizes! This is because what you have here is a photograph of a couple cut out and placed into a piece of artwork of swans in a garden lake. In my mind this makes for a very comical image, but I wonder if buyers realised at the time. It is clear that at least one was bought and posted as this copy here was sent internally in Nottingham in what I believe was 1912. Interestingly, I think I like it more because of its errors, it is certainly why I bought it.

(Printed and Published by the Sole Concessionaires)

I was saddened when these famous twin towers were lost to us when they were demolished in 2003 to make way for a new stadium that was built here. I was not alone as this demolition upset many people here and abroad as the twin towers were a football icon. Their loss has lead to an interest in postcards which depict them, even the older ones like this. The stadium, and the twin towers were built for the 1924 (and subsequent 1925) British Empire Exhibition, so this postcard is from the beginning of the stadiums story. I was fortunate to see the twin towers several times and even took the behind the scenes Wembley Stadium tour once and went into the changing rooms and other areas which the general-public could only access via this tour, I even bought some postcards on it I remember. I also saw the rock band ‘Queen’ play live here on their ‘It’s a Kind of Magic’ tour, and that was a fantastic day. I proposed to my wife on this day whilst we were standing on the field in front of the stage, so the location was important to us… so I think they should have kept the towers.

Why anyone would want to buy a postcard of a young couple like this I don’t really know, but what I can say is that for a while back in the 1960’s this type of postcard was very popular, and I suppose at the time, trendy. Examples now can be considered as part of the historic modern postcard story, unfortunately, not a very valuable part of it.

Military History and the postcards connected with conflict have always been of interest to me because the subject itself is a passion of mine. This postcard was a birthday present from my late mother, who passed away in 1996, so this was over 25 years ago. She had seen me looking at this on a dealer’s stand at a stamp & postcard fair in Southend, but at £12 I could not afford that much back then (£12 was a lot back in the early 1990’s). So, my mother, without my knowledge moved in and spoke with the dealer and identified the card I had spent ages looking at and bought it for me. Some postcards I may well pass on or sell in the future, but this card I will always keep because of the connection with my mother (although how she felt about buying a Third Reich postcard depicting Hitler I hate to think!)

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

The stamp used here is a 1929 issued ‘National Arms’ 20h vermilion stamp from Czechoslovakia (originally SG 288) overprinted in 1938 with a swastika and ‘WIR SIND FREI’ [WE ARE FREE].

As the Czech authorities evacuated the Sudetenland in September 1938 the German authorities moved in and started to change the stamp issues. Initially in some areas, Reichenberg-Maffersdorf and Rumburg, a range of Czechoslovakian stamps were overprinted ‘Wir Sind Frei, although similar overprints were also used for Mahrisch-Ostrau in Bohemia in 1939. The 22nd September may well be the first day of issue/usage of this overprinted stamp as the Czechoslovakian government capitulated to the German occupation of this area on the 21st September, just the day before.

The stamp applied here has been cancelled with a special hand stamp ‘Schludeman [although I have been unable to find this location – I have put an image of this cancel out on a German Stamp collectors facebook page I am a member of too see if anyone can help, but so far the only thing we agree on is that it looks like ‘Schludeman’!) - Heil Hitler – Tag Der Befreiung [Day of Liberation] – 22.9.38, again this date and the ‘Day of Liberation’ text within the hand stamp lead me to believe this is the first day of use, although I suspect the stamps were possibly overprinted in advance for use on this date.

08/06/2018

UPDATE:

The members of the German stamp facebook page I am a member of have been doing some research into the place name across the top of the cancel on this postcard. The current feeling, backed with some logic is that this is a place in the Czech Republic called Sluknov, which the Germans called Schluckenau. As this was the centre of the Nazi party in this area, before and after the invasion in 1938 this seems a good indicator that this could be correct. Its location, importance to the Nazi party and the closeness of the spelling (allowing for local adjustment of exact spelling) makes this feel correct.

My thanks to everyone who helped with research into this one.

Art postcards are by far the most common themed postcards issued (there are more photographic view postcards issued but these are rarely collected on mass as a topic – people tend to collect certain areas, individual towns, villages, cities or counties, and in the U.S it is similar except their states are much bigger and some people try and collect cards from each of the states – something I am unaware of being done here in the UK with counties). So, anyone collecting art as a theme has the widest choice of postcards to choose from. I tend to go for art cards when the images appeal to me rather than any single style or artist, and when the card has some usage which interests me.

Clearly my card has a usage which does not come into this period, for a start it’s the following year; 1993, but it seems that many post offices regarded this slogan as a ‘Filler’ slogan to use when no other slogan was planned. This is probably how it came to be used here in 1993, although it has been seen used through to 1994.

This is a real photograph of the ‘galleries’ in Vittel, France. Vittel is a commune in the Vosges department in Grand Est in North Eastern France. Vittel is probably most well known for the bottled ‘Vittel’ branded mineral water that comes from this area. From 1917 (November) to 1919 (February) there was a U.S. Army Base Hospital (No 36) placed here in Vittel. During WWII served as an internment camp for enemy aliens of the German Reich, hundreds of American and British families were interned here between September 1942 and 10th September 1944 when the US Army liberated the area. So, this part of France has some interesting military history.

The Galleries pictured here are still here and look little different from ho they look on this postcard (see photographs below). Judging from the people and their placement in the photograph I think many, if not most, or all, of the people here were put here by the photographer. It was not unusual for photographers to use friends and models to populate their images. Some of the people here look posed to me.

The artwork piece depicted here was used on the cover of the book for its initial issue. It was this artwork which caught my eye when I found this card in a box of postcards in a book shop in London (3 x £1, so this cost me 33 and a bit pence). I have previously mentioned that ‘Television’ postcards are my favourite collectible, so it will be no surprise that it was the minor television content in this image that made me buy it. This connection is the photograph of Diana Rigg, bottom left, which is taken from her portrayal of Emma Peel in the television series ‘The Avengers’. I love adding unusual TV cards to my collection and this one is a cracker. There is also a ‘The Beatles’ connection as well as the guitar she is playing is a John Lennon ‘The Beatles’ guitar shaped badge. This card was worth every penny in my mind.

Does this ring a bell? That would be because I have posted this same design, but with a white background previously (see posting under ‘January 2018 Blog 2’ accessed via the ‘January Blogs 2018’ Tab – images posted on 20/01/2018). When I saw this blue background issue on my visit to London last week I had to buy it to add to my collection. The previous card had a plain back but with a sticker applied with sales details. This blue background issue does have a type of postcard back (see further down)

I know, I know, its another royal wedding related postcard and I have posted so many on the previous webpage page, but this is a new page and the topicality of these issues is still a relevant point. Judging from the text which is printed on the reverse side of this card it looks like this design was issued prior to the wedding date, so it may well be the very first wedding issue released here in the UK (or anywhere for that matter).

I have posted designs by Sabi Koz before for Prince William and Catherine and Lady Diana (see posting under ‘January 2018 Blog 2’ accessed via the ‘January Blogs 2018’ Tab – images posted on 20/01/2018).

I like her distinctive artwork style and think her cards are going to be collectible. The previously posted cards all had a plain back with sales details shown on an applied sticker, but this new Harry & Meghan release has a full postcard back which is a great improvement. As with the previous cards these are £2 each if found for sale in a London shop (I have so far only found them on sale in the ‘We Built This City’ shop in Carnaby St – see posting on 02/06/2018 – under the ‘June Blogs 2018’ Tab and go to the ‘Trooping the Colour’ art card posting to see a photograph of this shop), but they are also available via the artists website although I believe they are little more if bought from there, but they are great cards and worth adding to your collection.

This is a painting by C. T. Howard whose artwork regularly appeared on postcards and which I have much admired and collected for many years. My introduction to Howard’s work was through the many animal paintings released, many for and depicting animals in London Zoo. This one is a nice steam train design which was posted in 1936. As I have stated before railway postcards, especially steam trains (and early photographs of railway stations, especially the smaller branch line ones), have always been highly collected.
