Although not clear the hand stamp cancel used on the reverse side appears to be for 1903. There is little doubt that the Victorians, and the post-victorians (many of the same people of course) loved their animals and as a result just about every living creature then known to the Victorians and Edwardians appeared on postcard. Although exotic foreign animals were interesting there was a real love in picturing the well known domestic and farm animals on cards. This early goat image is quite typical of what was so popular in the early days after the turn of the century.

The Stephansplatz is an extremely well known square and tourist location at the centre of Vienna. Pictured here on this postcard is the most prominent building after which the square is named, the Stephansdom, the cathedral, Vienna’s Cathedral, one of the tallest churches in the world. We had the pleasure of visiting here for a couple of days back in 2019 and Jo attended a mass here on the Sunday. This was our first, and so far, only, visit to this historic city but I was able to pick up a number of postcards here as we toured around the cities many landmarks. Because the cathedral has such an impressive exterior and interior, I wanted to buy a few postcards depicting it but when I looked around, I found the most interesting ones to be artist images rather than photographic. I shall depict here the ones I picked up.

A different image to the one depicted above but it has its similarities. I did like the fact that this card names the cathedral rather than the square. The reverse side of this card also has a greyed-out image like the one above although this is much lighter on this card.

Below is the text I wrote on the 14th Jan whilst sat in my hotel room in Florida with the intention of this being my first Florida posting for 2023 – Unfortunately, I could not access my website for some reason, so I saved it to my computer laptop and post it now almost two weeks later – I have not changed any of the text so you can read what I had in tended you to read back then.

A GOOFY ROUND OF GOLF

“Mickey Mouse and his best pal play one of two PGA Championship golf courses at the Golf Resort Hotel, truly a golfer’s paradise”.

Official WALT DISNEY WORLD postcard

I have just got up on what is my third full day in the sunny state of Florida (yesterday it was definitely not sunny, it was a bit rainy and overcast and very, very windy, but I have checked through my sixth-floor window and the skies are clear today and the sun is almost fully up, but it is still a tadge windy). Now, I must admit, and I am sorry to all those who love it, but I am not a fan of golf, but who could resist another Mickey Mouse and Goofy postcard, even with a golf connection.

This one is a used example which was posted to the UK from Florida in 1988 and this one has not been available here for many years now.

Well, time to go out, and today we are going to explore International Drive. Maybe I will find a postcard or two, who knows.

I fly out tomorrow morning but not on one of these aeroplanes as these are no longer in use as aeroplane design has moved on many times since the Douglas DC-7C was in use here. I am not sure what type of plane we will be on, often in the past it was the famous Jumbo Jet commercial planes, but these are now no longer used by Virgin airline.

This postcard is from a series of at least five, I have five different, but many Salmon sets were of six cards so I would not be surprised to hear that I am missing one.

This is a great early multi-view postcard of the area that I live, Shoeburyness. I believe that all the separate images depicted were also available as full postcards. I certainly have the army camp image as a postcard and have posted it here before on the webpage. The image that interests me most is the one at the top which is labelled as ‘Pond Beach Road’. I am interested because there does not seem to be any such road any longer. I am looking forward to finding out where this road was and what is there now.

Tomorrow I shall be driving to Heathrow for an overnight hotel stay before flying out of Heathrow Airport on Wednesday. This will be my first flight post pandemic and I am looking forward to it. Unlike some people I do enjoy airports and I like the whole experience of flying and for me the holiday starts from the moment I leave home and not when I arrive at the holiday destination. Having said that, I would love to travel back in time to the early days of commercial flight when you would walk out to the aeroplane (I have done this a couple of times) sometimes across grass fields. I think the 1950’s and 1960’s was an amazing time for commercial flight, although many could not afford such things back then, and postcard images catch these periods of early passenger flights well. This is a lovely art card showing the casual way people would be attired for their flights and as depicted here also travelling with their pet dog. This card was posted from Maastricht in the Netherlands in 1954.

In a weeks’ time, exactly as I am typing this, I shall be on a plane (fingers crossed) to the US. No prizes for guessing where, as this postcard quite clearly gives that fact away. I have not flown anywhere since February 2020 and other than a couple of weeks in France to sort out the house we own there and set up its sale we have not been abroad since the pandemic hit. I am looking forward to both a bit of travel and that sense of the explorer you get when you are in a foreign country, even if it is one that you know quite well or have visited before.

A lot has changed since I last visited Florida and I am looking forward to discovering what these changes are and seeing what postcards I can find.

If you look up Brabant on the internet it says that it was a former duchy of West Europe which was divided when Belgium became independent in 1830. The south formed the Belgian province of Antwerp and Brabant whilst the north formed the province of North Brabant in the Netherlands. This postcard is from the Netherlands ‘Brabant’. This delightful multi-view postcard has a special postmark on the reverse side dated 1956, which means this card is either from, or pre-dates this year. This format where the local village and country costumes are depicted alongside the simple countryside lifestyle were very popular and examples can be found from all around this area over the history of picture postcard production. The earlier examples are clearly worth more, but this mid-century example is still nice, especially with its nice usage.

Christmas is now less than a week away so its probably time to start depicting some festive themed postcards (in the past years I have often started long before this late a date in December). I have picked a snowman themed one because, despite the total lack of it in my home town, much of the country had snow falling at some points of last week. This great card, which I bought in Germany back in 2019, has touches of shininess added to it (which do not appear too well in this scan but which make the card even better to look at in reality), these are mainly on the hats, scarves, bow tie, stars and the bottom line of presents.

Allied Forces including 5 Australian Divisions

Allied Casualties: 44,000 killed or wounded

German Empire Casualties: 75,000 killed or wounded and 50,000 captured

My reason for posting this card today is that I am close to finishing a book which I am reading which has made mention of this particular battle. The book is called ‘HAIG’S COMMAND A REASSESSMENT’ written by Denis Winter and published in 1991. The books aim is to try and expose what the author believes were historical frauds in the recording of facts around the records of the command team and its leader, Haig, during and especially after WW1. The book is basically a character assassination of Haig and is a very one-sided version of what the author believes. Historical research is about drawing conclusions but when a book is very one-sided like this one you get a feeling that there is a lack of open mindedness where what you really want is an unprejudiced approach where you are given facts and allowed to access your own opinion based on what the author informs you about. This book leaves you in no doubt about what the author believes and as a result is not as good a read as it could be. I would say it is an interesting read but needs approaching with a very open mind (let’s say 2 ½ out of 5 on my score table).

STOP TERROR

CORONAVIRUS THEMED ‘BAT’ IMAGE

Unknown Chinese Publisher

Issued 2020

I have received my copy of the 2023 Picture Postcard Annual in which is published my latest article on collecting the postcards of the Covid-19 Pandemic. I wrote this back in the summer, but this is the first time I have seen it with all the postcards illustrated and I am very pleased with how it looks.

This postcard here was not included in the article but it is one I quite like. The idea being portrayed here is not to be held in terror over the pandemic and not to consider the bat as being a death penalty on people. The bat of course was considered to have been the source of the coronavirus, something later confirmed as the most likely origin of this strain of coronavirus. The design is simple but very effective.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This postcard has some great usage with a tiger themed Cinderella label attached to a postage stamp and cancelled on the 11th May 2020 (the UK was still in its first period of lockdown at this time). There is also a red coloured Covid-19 themed chop (the mark that looks like a cancellation and has been applied top left). Bottom left there is an applied ‘Disinfected Mail’ sticker applied to show that this card received a disinfection wipe at the postal office. These Disinfected Mail labels (stickers if you like) are very collectible, and a range of different versions were used during this period by different postal locations. Copies rarely turn up for sale now and when they do they can cost quite a bit now.

This is the type of postcard which appeals to a whole range of different collectors. You have your animal theme postcard collectors, obviously, but there are also Maxi-card collectors who like this sort of item where the applied stamp relates to the postcard image (although to be a true maxi-card the cancellation also needs to be of the same theme, so this is technically more of a ‘First Day Of Issue’ used card, but I am not as fussy as some collectors) and there are many stamp collectors who don’t mind adding a nicely used postcard to their collections. I think this is a lovely item.

Can there be any doubt that kittens and puppies are amongst the most popular of postcard themes. Images like this one, from the 1950’s, have appeared on postcards throughout the history of the humble postcard. Sadly, the artist for this image is not named on the postcard, but that is not unusual for the cards of this era where they were only interested in getting the images out these and not adding too much text to the reverse side, which saved printing costs and design element expenses.

It is interesting how many things Irene Cara appeared in, there’s ‘Kojak’ (1976), ‘Roots: The Next Generation’ (1979) and ‘Hearts Are Wild’ (1992), all television programmes. There were also a number of films but after 1989 these were mainly voice rolls, but she will be remembered for ‘Fame’ best, although I also remember her appearing in the 1984 film ‘City Heat’ which I saw in the cinema (a film which brought Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds together – it was perhaps not a great film, and it rarely gets an airing on TV these days but I have fond memories of it).

This postcard is from a series of music groups and solo artists that appeared on these Weetabix ‘Top Trax’ postcards, which were given away free at the time with this cereal in the UK. The postcards were produced in ‘golden age’ size, so slightly smaller than the modern cards of the time.

Hovercraft postcards have always been collectible, perhaps even more so now that most of the big ones like the one depicted here have gone. I believe there is a nostalgia behind much of the collecting of these postcards although for me it’s a fascination in how these craft looked. I never travelled on a hovercraft but do remember seeing them at sea and in port when I was travelling on ferries in the English Channel. I have always collected these postcards and there are many different cards to hunt down as they often appeared on multi-view cards sold in and around d Kent, not to mention some other locations, especially the Isle of Wight, but it is the Kent cards which I like as they seem to picture these larger hovercrafts.

This card here was bought this year and cost me £1, which I think was a good price for such a great card. Also, I should probably let you know, if you did not already know, that the castle depicted in the top area of the card is Dover Castle. I have visited this castle a few times and I really enjoy the mix of old and more recent (WWII) history that the castle is connected with.

Sometimes I buy a card because it is reasonably priced (i.e. cheap), other times its because the image appeals, and most often it is because the card fits into one of my collecting themes. But sometimes I don’t really know why I have bought a particular card, which is the case with this one. It is in my collection, obviously, and I think I bought it sometime over the past year or two, but my exact reason(s) for acquiring this card elude me.

Looking at it now though I do notice that the building, the Town Hall I assume from the title, looks almost as if it has been drawn rather than photographed, it just does not look real! Perhaps this unusual looking aspect is what caught my eye. Clearly the foreground is photographic and there seems to be no reason for the building not to be part of the photograph so I must assume it is just the quality and style of the negative from which the image was printed. This does make it an interesting card for me.

Now, I am not sure how I feel about this current competition as it appears to have been mired by politics and the way the country is run and how these games are motivated by money rather than by sport, and I am not sure that I don’t agree with many of the issues that have been raised. Having said all that, the games are running and there is no doubt that football has a massive following and large numbers of people will be supporting their national team.

This depicted card is a simple one and it is the cancellation which has the relevance to have it posted here today.
