The Prime Minister has had a hard-old week what with cancelling the vote re the Brexit deal, then facing the vote of no-confidence, which she won, but at the loss of more time she needed to work on the Brexit plan with the Europeans. I bet there are not many that would want to be working here at-the-moment. What with all the news and broadcasts wrapped around UK politics this week I thought this would be an appropriate postcard to be posting.

These slightly larger postcards were a great freebie from any visit to a Stampex exhibition. The earlier ones like this with an unadopted stamp design on the front were the best. More recently the free cards have been smaller (more normal postcard sized) and have depicted the advertising poster design for the event(s), but these have not been so good. This ocean liner design is one of my favourites.

Visitors to Stampex have often taken their free postcard and applied the special Stampex Show exclusive stamp items to it and had the card cancelled with a special Stampex hand stamp. I also used to do this.

This one here has the following items applied:

1) Post & Go – 1^st Class – Puffin (Birds Series 4) – this was obtained from the Stampex Post & Go machine. These stamps with the 2012 date are very collectible and if I am right were only available at this specific Stampex show and nowhere else (they are very collectible for this reason).

2) Two of the RMS Titanic Stampex Show ‘Smilers’ sheet stamps with attached labels. Both have the small Union Jack 1^ST class stamp and an attached pictorial label, one showing the grand staircase and another the front of the ship at the bottom of the ocean.

3) 1^st Class and 1^st Large Machin Queens Head Post & Go stamps with the Stampex exclusive additional print ‘Diamond Jubilee – 1952-2012’ print. Both obtained from the Stampex Post & Go machine.

All the stamps and Post & Go stamps have been cancelled with the special ‘SPRING STAMPEX – 22^ND FEB 2012 – LONDON N1’ stamp shaped hand stamp. The 22^nd of February 2012 was the first day of that years Spring Stampex, which means that this was also the first day of issue for all the items attached to this card (including the Puffin post & go which had been first issued in 2011, but here at this Stampex was the first, and I believe only time it was available with a 2012 date, so this was the first day of issue of this dated version).

This card was my personal souvenir of my visit to this Stampex.

REVERSE SIDE OF YET ANOTHER COPY OF THE ABOVE POSTCARD

I visited the 2012 Spring Stampex again on the 24^th February (the last but one day – the 25^th being the last day). On this trip I again produced a souvenir for myself.

1) Another two of the RMS Titanic Stampex Show ‘Smilers’ sheet stamps with attached labels. Both have the small Union Jack 1^ST class stamp and an attached pictorial label, one showing the captain of the Titanic, Edward Smith and another showing the memorial in Southampton.

2) 1^st Class and Worldwide up to 40g Machin Queens Head Post & Go stamps with the Stampex exclusive additional print ‘Diamond Jubilee – 1952-2012’ print. Both obtained from the Stampex Post & Go machine.

3) 1^st Class (Welsh Mountain Badger Face) and Worldwide up to 40g (Dalesbred) post & go sheep stamps.

All the stamps and Post & Go stamps have been cancelled with the special ‘SPRING STAMPEX – 24th FEB 2012 – LONDON N1’ stamp shaped hand stamp. The 24th of February 2012 was the first day of issue for the Post & go sheep stamps, so for these two stamps this is a first day of issue item.

So, here you have two unusual items from my collection which probably are unique, although other collectors will have prepared similar looking items with perhaps a different selection of the items available. I really like these.

A lovely railway history postcard issued on the 150^th anniversary of this famous railway. Postcards like this one which are connected to a specific anniversary or date tend to be less common than standard issue postcards which clearly have a longer shelf life. This card here I have rarely seen in amongst dealer’s stock (not that this adds any great value though).

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This card has been used to receive the 1975 issued 7p 150^th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington railway stamp that depicts the same train engine as depicted on the front of the postcard, Stephenson’s Rocket. This stamp has been cancelled with a special first day of issue railway ticket shaped special hand stamp: SHILDON, CO(UNTY) DURHAM – FIRST DAY OF ISSUE – 13 AUG 1975.

Not a very complementary police themed postcard, but one from the 1980’s which became even more topical in the late 2000’s when there was all the talk of the inherent racism within the Metropolitan police. This cartoon does follow the belief in this racism and the fact that a cartoon like this could be produced indicates that there was a belief behind the stories of the time.

No date on this postcard, but it’s a deckle-edged issue so is probably 1950’s – 1960s. The bathing suits shout 1950’s to me, but as stated before that dates the photograph and not when the photograph was produced as this postcard (there is nothing to say that they were concurrent). Nice card though and one which cost me just 50p.

There is little to no information to help the postcard historian with the printed aspects of this card, except the card quality and the matt printing. This one was used, but either no stamp was applied, or more likely looking at it the stamp may have been removed, but the hand-written message shows that this card was from someone in Varena (which is now in Lithuania) to Praha (Prague – now in the Czech Republic but was in Czechoslovakia. The cancellation is from Prague and is dated the 22^nd December in what was either 1943 or 1945 (I think it’s 1943, but it’s not clear). So, either this posted during the war (WWII) or after the war but still within that final year. Personally, I like the idea of someone still sending a Christmas postcard whilst the fighting was still going on.

This is now quite an old postcard, 42 years old in-fact. The age may be the reason why it is a black and white image rather than a full colour one, black and white being easier to produce in smaller numbers back then. The image depicts a stamp cover from the 1921 Philatelic Congress which was also held in Harrogate with two stamps cancelled with the event hand stamp and the cinderella 8^th Philatelic Congress, Harrogate label. Although it would have been nice in colour I still think this black and white version is worth looking out for. My copy only cost me 30p.

As far as Hovercraft postcards go his is an absolute cracker. This is also a postcard I have not seen before and I like hovercraft postcards and do seek them out. This one was posted in 1962. If you can find one of these expect to pay anywhere between £3 and £6 for a copy, possibly even more on eBay.

Posted on the 7^th September 1962 the ‘Wilding’ Queen Elizabeth II definitive stamp has been cancelled with a ‘EASTBOURNE SUSSEX’ wavy line machine cancellation. The hand-written message has a neat ending as it states that this card was bought in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight and that it was ‘very up-to-date’.

This is a great poster collection on a cracking photograph.

I collect all Marilyn Monroe postcards, even ones titled as ‘MARYLIN’ [I don’t know if this is a printing error by the company or just an unusual title used by the artist – either way, it’s the wrong spelling]. The drawing depicted in the book on this piece of artwork is a copy of a really-early photograph of a young Marilyn Monroe (then still using her real given name of Norma Jean Mortenson). This would ‘definitely’ class as an unusual Monroe postcard and, also, a great art postcard.

I have mentioned before my childhood holidays in Minehead and our family visits to Lynmouth. These holidays have led to my interest in the area and when I see older modern postcards like this one, I always pick them up. This one was posted in 1961.

I do like postcards that are posted from the area they depict, or as in this case nearby as Lynton is immediately above Lynmouth, literally as you can take a cliff-lift from Lynmouth up to Lynton (which I did many times as a kid). This card has the stamp cancelled with a LYNTON - DEVON wavy line machine cancellation dated 15^th August 1961.

This is the type of postcard we will miss now that J. Salmon have ceased to produce any new postcards, in fact ANY postcards, but hopefully the remaining stock will still be available in some shops for at least a little while. When past companies have ceased postcard production it has not been unusual to still find some of their cards in shops for ages afterwards, sometimes for decades (depending on the popularity of the cards and the images depicted on them, and of course how many the shops had ordered up in advance before the company stopped printing). So, hopefully you will see copies of this cracking war planes one in shops for a few years yet… but hurry.

I bought this smashing postcard at the Tate Modern in London. The card depicts a boat which was painted by Peter Blake in commemoration of the war time ‘Dazzle Ships’, ships painted with unusual patterns across them to break up their outlines when viewed from the sea. This was a camouflage technique used to protect against German U-Boats. The designs on the original ships were, I believe in black and white, but this use of colour here is a modern artistic interpretation. The original geometric patterns did not make the ships invisible to the U-Boats, they broke up the outlines making it much harder for the U-Boats to discern the ships speed, distance and direction. Although this is clearly and art card it still manages to have a connection with my military history collection.

THE STRAND AND NANNY MOORE’S BRIDGE, BUDE

The name o this postcard was one of the things that intrigued me. What was the story behind ‘Nanny Moore’s Bridge!” Well, apparently, it’s a listed Grade II structure (listed in 1985 – 9^th Sep) which was originally named the Bude Bridge but was renamed in the nineteenth century. Once it was used by packhorses and carts, but nowadays it is just a footbridge. The unusual current name comes from a ‘Dipper’ from the 19^th century, a dipper being a bathing machine attendant. They escorted ladies who wished to bathe in the sea and Nanny Moore was a dipper who lived in a cottage nearby. What is so fascinating is that it is apparently not known exactly why the bridge was renamed after her. I find this fact fascinating. What was so great about her that they ended up naming the bridge after her? For what was a simple looking and fairly-uninteresting photo I discovered a great back story.

My actual reason for buying this postcard was the great company logo at the top centre of this side. The front did nothing for me (initially), but when I turned the card over, I immediately loved the old sail ship logo (which is probably a sign of just how mad my postcard collecting is!), it is a great logo though.

This is a nice early Harry Potter movie related postcard, one which came out between the first two movies (which seems like a long time ago now!). Anyway, I am depicting this card today because I am shortly leaving to drive to the ‘HARRY POTTER WARNER BROS STUDIO TOUR’ where Jo and I intend to get another ‘Potter’ fix. We have been before, twice, but we have not seen the new additions of the Hogwarts Express train and the Forbidden Forrest section and I really want to see the giant Acromantula (and fans of the books and movies will know what this is).

I have bought postcards from here before, but I will be looking to see if there are any new ones today which I can add to my collection. I will hopefully add some photographs to the facebook page so check it out later this evening.

This card is so typical of those that became popular during the 1970’s with tourists. It is a multi-view montage card with the required burst of bright, almost gawdy colour, in this case the bright red top to this postcard. For some reason gawdy colouring was a common factor of this period. Perhaps it was deemed necessary to catch the eye of the passing tourists.

1992 seems so long ago now, but I remember attending this postcard fair (I remember more the partial drive home when my car blew a head gasket and had to go into a garage leaving me to find my way home by train!) Everyone who attended this fair received a free postcard, this one, although this card can be found with two different reverse printings (the front being identical on both versions).
