Royal Decree of 7th November 1876 (Official Gazette No. 192)

OFFICIAL FREE MAYORAL USED FREE CARD

I found this in a box at a fair and its size initially intrigued me as its not far off A5 sized. I then saw the date of use on the cancellations, which is 1888, which is old. I could then see that there were no pre-printed postage marks or stamps and no actual postage stamps applied to cover the postage cost. I had no idea which language this was, although I suspected it was from the Netherlands, which was confirmed once I translated the printed text (back at home). So, I bought it to do some work on it. With the help of some contacts on facebook (some of the pages here have very knowledgeable members from all over the world and as long as you are not asking obvious, or stupid questions, everyone loves to help each other out) I now know this is an official office postal card used by Mayor’s of different areas to communicate with each other, and possibly other official offices and organisations. So, it is an official office card of Holland. the Royal Decree which is printed on the card is the authorisation under which the free postage usage was allowed.

Official Postal Stationery Post Card

Reference No: 305
An attractive World War II period German issued postal stationery Post Card. Issued in 1942 for a European Postal Conference, which I assume was controlled and run, if not up front then I suspect most certainly from behind the scenes, by the Nazi’s. Interestingly though, this cards design does not incorporate any Nazi emblems or paraphernalia which surprised me a bit when I saw the date and the location.

Issued 1909 to commemorate the dedication of the U.P.U. monument in Bern
This is a lovely postal stationery post card which was issued in Switzerland with a pre-printed stamp on the reverse side. It appears in two of my major catalogue collections, the Michel (from Germany) and the ‘Higgins & Gage’ (see references in main heading). It is a good example of why this type of extensive catalogue are so valuable to collectors.

OFFICIAL POSTAL STATIONERY POST CARD

This is another copy of the same postal stationery post card as depicted above only postally used this time. The sender seems to have written messages on both side of the card. The one on the front here is dated 16th October 1909, the year of this cards issue. This would seem to coincide nicely with the date on the cancellation on the front here which is a receiving mark, cancelled here in the UK where the card was addressed to (London in fact). The receiving mark is for ‘CRICKLEWOOD S.O. [Sorting Office] N. W.’ and is dated 18th October 1909.

The pre-printed postage stamp top right has been cancelled with a ‘GENEVE [Geneva], EXP. LETT [possibly this stands for ‘Express Letter’ but this is not confirmed]’ cancellation dated 17 X 09 [17TH October 1909]. It is nice to have both a mint and a used copy of the same card.

This arrived in the post today. It is a card I have been seeking for a while, but for some reason I just could not find a copy. I wanted it for my television collection because it relates directly to a programme called BEAT THE CLOCK which was an American television programme game show. The programme ran for 18 seasons, originally appearing on the CBS network between 1950 and 1958 (with further updated programmes between 1979 and 1980), then continuing on the ABC network between 1958 and 1961.
Here in the UK there was a BEAT THE CLOCK segment on the TV show ‘SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM which appeared between 1955 and 1967, and it is theses TV appearances that this postcard design is mimicking. It was very popular and had some amazing presenters:
Tommy Trinder (1955 – 1958)
Bruce Forsyth (1958 – 1960)
Don Arrol (1960 – 1961)
Norman Vaughan (1962 – 1965)
Jimmy Tarbuck (1965 – 1967)
This postcard will fit very nicely into my television collection and I am delighted to finally get my hands on a copy.

I bought this postcard for the building you can see in the distance up on the hill. This is Alexandra Palace and I collect postcards that depict it because it was from here that the BBC originally transmitted their early television programmes from. They had a studio inside this building and a transmission tower on one of the end towers, which is obviously not shown here as this image pre-dates the television era. I suppose would be interested in the sport that is going on in the foreground, and I think those interested in local history would appreciate the image.

We visited here towards the end of last summer, and if the current circumstances change, we will go back again this year. We took the campervan and stayed a ‘little ways’ outside of Cromer and could travel into the seaside town via a small train. This is one of the postcards I bought on that visit.

THE POST OF FINLAND PHILATELIC CENTRE (HELSINKI, FINLAND)
This special exhibition postcard has a Finland definitive attached top right which has been cancelled with the Finland Post exhibition stands exclusive cachet/cancel. The card was probably sold exclusively at the stand at the exhibition itself. It would have been sold as a philatelic exhibition souvenir of the International event.
There was of course going to be another one of these to have been held next month. This one has of course been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic (something which I have mentioned quite often recently, but which is probably not a surprise as it most definitely is on most people’s minds). If the event had run (its been put off until 2022 now) there would have been similar souvenirs sold at this one – I will have to wait a couple of years now to obtain them.

The Butlin’s Holiday Camp postcards are collected by a dedicated band of fans who I suspect have fond memories of holidays in one or other of the camps. Personally, all my memories are tied up in the Butlin’s camp at Minehead. We had three childhood holidays at this camp and each one was a joy. So, I know why I collect these cards, and why I concentrate on the Minehead Camp.

TREASURES OF TUTANKHAMUN:-
STATUETTE OF THE KING UPON A LEOPARD
Published by the BRITISH MUSEUM
Printed by
GEORGE RAINBIRD LIMITED
The exhibition ‘Treasures of Tutankhamun’ came to England in 1972 with 50 pieces being chosen by the directors of the British Museum and the Cairo Museum. The exhibition was officially opened by the Queen on 29th March 1972. The exhibitions last day was on the 31st December 1972, and during its run 1.6 million visitors had seen it. I was one of those visitors, although back then I was only collecting pure wildlife postcards, so I did not buy any of the postcards being sold alongside the exhibition. I have since sourced an entire set of these postcards. This is one of those official postcards.
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
The sender of this postcard posted it to receive the special hand stamp: ‘TREASURES OF TUTANKHAMUN EXHIBITION, LONDON WC’ dated 25 SEP 1972. What also appealed to me is the use of the 3p Tutankhamun discovery 1922 UK royal mail postage stamp. This makes for a nice combination. It might not be a neat usage, but this is a genuine used postcard, which in some ways appeals to me more.

This large sized postcard reminds me of holidays past, especially at this time when no one anywhere is having a holiday, but things will return to some form of normal at some future point. In the meantime, at least we have our hobbies to give us something to do. I have enjoyed keeping this webpage up and running and building up the FALKLANDS WAR PHILATELIC DISPLAY tab additions. There are now 12 pages under this heading, but then it is one of my favourite areas of collecting and I have included some artwork, a print, newspapers and other paper ephemera related to the Falklands War and its commemoration.

HONOR BLACKMAN ….. RIP
22ND August 1925 – 6th April 2020
British actress of Film, Theatre and Television who is best known for her parts in The Avengers, as Cathy Gale and the James Bond film ‘Goldfinger’ where she had the notorious name of Pussy Galore (she was probably the only person who could have gotten away with that name so successfully and not having it detract from her excellent acting in the film). I also remember her well from her regular appearances in the TV sit-com ‘The Upper Hand’ where she played the character Laura West (a part almost made for her). Honor Blackman had too many appearances in both film and TV to list fully here, but some well known ones include: Casualty (2013 – TV), New Tricks (2005 – TV), Bridget Jones Diary (2001 – Film), Dr Who (1986 – TV), Minder on the Orient Express (1985 – TV), To the Devil a Daughter (1976 – Film), Columbo (Dagger of the mind – 1972 – TV), Jason and the Argonauts (1963 – Film), The Saint (1962 – TV), The Glass Cage (1955 – Film), Green Grow the Rushes (1951 – Film) and Conspirator (1949 – Film). Honor’s first film appearance was in the 1947 film ‘Fame is the Spur’ in an uncredited part.

Tonight, I have placed images of 186 Falklands War and Falkland Islands themed FAGA postcards on the webpage under two new sub tabs under the main FALKLANDS WAR PHILATELIC DISPLAY tab. He styled himself as Viscount Weymouth between 1946 and 1992, had a political career and was both an artist and a writer, but is best remembered for his flamboyant attire and his home at Longleat. The Marquess was admitted to hospital last month and tested positive for coronavirus which has sadly been stated as the cause of his death.

SOUTHEND AIRPORT
Unrecorded Publisher
Ref: PT8359
I recently had the luck of winning this postcard on an eBay auction. This is the old control tower at Southend airport, my local towns airport (currently all but shut down of course as all passenger flights have been stopped due to the coronavirus outbreak). I have flown out of Southend Airport a couple of times, once whilst this was the control tower in use, but they have a much bigger and better one now which cost £3 million and which became operational in 2011. Therefore, this postcard image shows another piece of history which is no longer in use. You also get the bonus of all those aeroplanes depicted on the tarmac.

POSTAL OSCARCOLOR
Printed in Spain
Ref: 451
Before becoming James Bond, which is perhaps his best-known role, Roger Moore had become famous across the world as the Saint, a character in a very popular television series based on the books by Leslie Charteris. The TV series ran from the 4th October 1962 to the 9th February 1969 with 118 episodes being filmed. Postcards showing Moore as the Saint are far less common than his James Bond postcard appearances, but there still a few. This one was issued in Europe on the mainland and has a scene from one of the episodes along with The Saint stickman logo top left.

This was a cracking set of 10 postcards which both promoted this animated feature film, released in 2018, and the MBE parcel company. The cards are interesting because they have great front images and nice greyed out different reverse images on every card.
This animated film was well received and went onto win the 2019 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, the BAFTA Award for Best Animated film and the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Animated Film. Not bad for a Super-Hero movie. I’ve watched the film and it is a good one.

Whoever originally bought this postcard very kindly wrote in pencil on the reverse side the date that they did so, this was the 28th May 1913. It was many years later in 2020, in February to be precise that I visited this same museum and saw this very piece. I was impressed with seeing it but saddened that there was no postcard showing it. Imagine my subsequent delight then when I found this one on eBay once I had got back home. Clearly, I had to have it.
