HER MAJESTY
QUEEN ELIZABETH
THE QUEEN MOTHER
My interest in the Queen Mother came about from the fact that she was, at the time of her death, the only direct member of the royal family I had not seen. I am not a royalist, as major fans are called, but through my work I met Princess Diana, and because I obtained the Queens Scout Award and the Duke of Edinburgh gold award when I was younger this meant that I got to meet the Queen and Prince Phillip. But I never got to meet or see the Queen Mother.
When the Queen Mother passed away in 2002 a range of postcards were issued and there was a special stamp set issued. With these items I decided to combine some of them and produce some commemorative souvenirs for my collection. I may have gone a bit overboard!
HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER’S
80TH BIRTHDAY

I have a number of copies of this postcard in my collection. This one has the depicted stamp applied to the front and cancelled with a simple BASILDON First Day of Issue standard circular cancellation, dated 4th August 1980. It was then, and still is a cheap postcard. Because this card had little real value, and I had more than one I was able to add another postal aspect to it.
When the news announced the death of the Queen Mother on the 30th March 2002 I got a hold of a royalty themed stamp (depicting the Queen) and applied this to the top left corner of the card and had this cancelled with the standard ROYAL MAIL WINDSOR [which I thought was an appropriate location] pictorial cancel dated 30th March 2002, the date the Queen Mother passed away. A possibly unique addition to my collection.

On the 2nd of August 1990 the Royal Mail issued a four-stamp set celebrating the 90th birthday of the Queen Mother. PHQ Stamp cards were also issued for all four designs. This is the card for the 20p value design.
After the Queen Mother passed away in 2002 the royal mail issued a set to commemorate her life and cover her death philatelically. There was not enough time to produce new images, so they used the same four basic images as used for the 90th birthday celebration set but added a black boarder, where the original stamps had a silver boarder. In this black boarder they added different text. Although stamps were printed and issued there was not enough time for representative Stamp Cards to be issued, so this is one stamp set that did not have any stamp cards issued for it. Therefore, I used the original 90th birthday stamp cards, already cancelled for that celebration, to receive the then new death of the Queen Mother stamps.
This copy has been used First Day of issue on the front with:

We have a 80th birthday and some 90th birthday related postcards depicted above so I thought I would add in this 100th birthday postcard issued by one of my favourite UK artists, the late Rosalind Wicks. The image also has connection with a card depicted below as well.

This has the 27p Queen Mother stamp from the 100th birthday special stamp sheet applied. This has been cancelled first day of issue with a nice silver coloured special hand stamp dated 4th August 2000. With the addition of the artists signature as well, this is a nice item.

This is the first, and in my mind the best of the ‘in memoriam’ postcard issues which were released. This one was released quite quickly and to achieve this the artist used the same image of the Queen Mother as she had drawn for the post card she issued for the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday, but the design is no less impressive for this.
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
I produced this used card by applying the two royal stamps and obtaining two different special hand stamps:
9th APRIL 2020 – ROYAL MAIL LONDON SW (Buckingham Palace) – This was the date of the funeral of the Queen Mother.
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
To this card I also applied a royal themed stamp which was cancelled:
30 MARCH 2002 – ROYAL MAIL, WINDSOR – This was the date, as mentioned above, that the Queen Mother passed away.
REVERSE SIDE OF ANOTHER COPY OF THE ABOVE POSTCARD
This has been used with the 20p Royal Mail 90th Birthday stamp which has been cancelled with a special first day of issue – 4th August 1990 – hand stamp (different to the one used on the above copy).
To this card I also applied a royal themed stamp (E value) which was cancelled:
REVERSE SIDE OF ANOTHER COPY OF THE ABOVE POSTCARD
This was a card I bought from a dealer – C.A. Boylett – who had applied the 20p 90th birthday stamp and had this cancelled first day of issue. This was number 50 of 100 copies produced.
I applied the 1st class stamp top left, and this cancelled 30 MARCH 2002 – ROYAL MAIL, WINDSOR – This was the date, as mentioned above, that the Queen Mother passed away.
REVERSE SIDE OF ANOTHER COPY OF THE ABOVE POSTCARD
This was a card I bought from a dealer – C.A. Boylett – who had applied the 20p 90th birthday stamp and had this cancelled first day of issue. This was number 34 of 100 copies produced.
I applied the 1st class stamp top left, and this cancelled 30 MARCH 2002 – ROYAL MAIL, WINDSOR – This was the date, as mentioned above, that the Queen Mother passed away.

Limited Edition of 500 copies
Probably my least favourite of the postcard issues for the death of the Queen Mother, but this does not mean that it is an unattractive design, far from it. There is also the fact that as only 500 copies were printed it can be a hard card to find now.

This was the card which related to the funeral and one which I only managed to get one copy of, but there was one special cancellation which was announced quite late, and after I had posted off all of the above cards, so I had this final special handstamp applied to this card, in fact I had two stamps applied and two cancels obtained.
