HEUREUSE ANNEE

“HAPPY NEW YEAR”

Unknown Publisher

Produced in France

NOVELTY BOOKLET STYLED EMBOSSED DESIGN

(Embossed Four-Leaf Clover design)

There are several things to like about this novelty postcard, firstly the nice embossed front to the white area, which shows a four-leaf clover (considered a lucky charm in many areas), and the embossed pattern around the purple coloured card edging. Secondly, the delightful patterned edging around the card, something which I always find attractive on these older cards. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, you can open-up the white section on the front of this card – see below.

You cannot beat a free postcard, especially one related to your home town and one which is unique to my home town as well. ‘Teddy Station’ is a shop which specialises is teddy bears and other stuffed animals, as can be seen by some of the animals displayed in the cabinets as I can see pandas, rabbits, a monkey and a kangaroo. I can see a couple of minions as well, which could, at a push, place this in a film collection, but what about my ‘Television’ themed collection? Well, I can fit this into it via the addition of the ‘Snowman’ stuffed toy in the cabinet in the picture bottom left, as this was a made for TV animated Christmas film. So, not bad for a free card, and although, as I have recently stated, teddy bears as a theme is not as collectible as it once was, I think this one will do very nicely for my collection.

I have depicted in the past some American packs of party invitation cards and ‘Thank You’ postcards, but I have been bemoaning the lack of such items here in the UK. Well, these are not quite what I want but they are shaped invite cards, not true postcards, despite what is written on the packets of the cards shown here, where they are called POSTCARDS, despite not truly being as such, but as these all have a television connection, I like to include these invite shaped card packs in my collection. These packs shown here were found in a UK store called ‘THE FACTORY SHOP’. They are £2.99 each and contain eight shaped invitation cards (not the folded greetings styled cards, but a single piece of shaped card, the distinction is important to me, for some reason – I suspect because this is nearer to a traditional postcard I suppose).

I have a dedicated collection of Thomas the Tank engine postcards and am always happy to add to it. What I also like is these are different to the cards I picked up in the US, obviously as the American ones are true ‘Thank You’ postcards (it’s the same with the BLAZE and JUSTICE LEAGUE ones which I also picked up in the US).

Jerrod Maruyama

This is one of the Disney ‘Wonderground’ Star Wars themed postcards that I applied some of the 2015 royal mail Star Wars stamps to and had cancelled first day of issue. The stamps are the Princess Leia, Darth Vader and Yoda 1st class character stamps and a 1st class Tie Fighters space ships stamp from the miniature space ship stamp sheet. They have all been cancelled with the special ‘SHUTTLEWOOD, CHESTERFIELD – STAR WARS - 20-10-2015’ Millennium Falcon hand stamp. All the characters on the stamps appear in this piece of artwork, and there are also some Tie Fighter outlines amongst the other little images, so I thought it was an appropriate card for these stamps. I was pleased with the placement of stamps and how the hand stamp centre applied the four special cancels as that also made the card look impressive. This usage is almost certainly unique, and the card was lovely before all the stamp’s, but I think I have enhanced it with all these additions.

When the centenary of the Picture Postcard arrived in 1994 it was such a big anniversary for us that I knew that, along with many, many others, that I had to produce and issue my own postcard to celebrate it. At the time, 1994, Richard Blake was a well known modern postcard artist and it seemed to me, at the time, that he was the best choice to paint a design for me. Gladly, Richard agreed, and he came up with a superb personal design for me which clearly, because of who I was, had to be police related. I wanted a limited-edition release, so I restricted it to just 500 cards, all of which I hand numbered myself. I also was delighted that Richard kindly signed a small number for me, if I remember correctly he signed 20, so signed copies are far harder to source (I only have two left in my own collection!)

This set of three postcards was always going into my collection. Although they were originally free I had to buy my copies from a dealer as they did not appear in my area, as far as I saw. The reason why I wanted these was twofold, firstly I do collect military themed postcards, especially modern conflicts and battles. Secondly, my youngest son was in the army and went to Afghanistan. He was not there too long before he was caught by an I.E.D. (improvised explosive device) whilst out on patrol. Unfortunately, he was injured, fortunately, although bad enough that he was flown back to the UK, not bad enough that he did not make a full physical recovery. I can never fully understand what occurred that day, beyond the obvious, and this has drawn my interest into this period of long running internal conflict in Afghanistan. Few postcards seem to deal with this military campaign, which has been a long one, so I was delighted to find these related and very good postcards.

TALLIBOB FENCE, YEAH!

I liked the top two postcards because they are different photographs to what you normally find from a war zone (not that I believe they call it a war zone), although the signpost thing does seem to be a military base staple, although tis one seems to give directions to more important in-base locations, but still with the well-known staple of a sign to somewhere back at home, this time Windsor at 5544 km.

This is a single postcard from what was a large set of science fiction (with some horror) artwork pieces from some well-known artists from this arena. The postcards were released before I was collecting anything other than wildlife themed cards, so I got into collecting them when I found a load of them on sale in Ipswich in early 1988. Since then I have been trying to complete my set. I’m not there yet, but I only have a couple to go. They originally, in Ipswich, cost me just 5p each, but now you can expect to pay anything between £2.50 to £5 each for these.

What I always liked about the Camden Graphics postcards is that the content of their postcards changed constantly with every set or individual card they released. The designs were so well produced and interesting that many collectors specialise in this company’s output. I have a quite large collection myself, but I am not a fanatic like some collectors I know. So, it helps greatly that the company numbered their postcards in numeric order (although there was one little oddity which involves the first dozen or so issues which came under a different numbering system, one which I will explain through the depiction of one of these in the near-future). This card here is number 897, but the company reached well into the 1000’s. This cute picture coincided with a collecting trend from the 1980’s/1990’s for Teddy Bear related postcards. That craze/fad has long gone, but you never know, it may return in the future.

This game was a by-product of the success of the 2002 issued live-action ‘Spider-Man’ movie, starring Toby Maguire. This fact therefore dates this card to probably that year, or very soon after (but I suspect 2002 – 2003 at the latest). For anyone who collects super-hero postcards this is a smashing one, which was of course originally a free one as well.

There have been two more Spider-Man actors since Toby Maguire portrayed him in three films, the latest of which is Tom Holland who appears as Spider-Man in the new film ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, which I saw Monday night – it’s great and I can not wait for the next one.

I bought these in France last month from the antiques shop I visited. Three of these are clearly depicting the same couple, with a green background, whilst the fourth, see below, has a different couple and a purple background. These all have a rough-cut edge, not really a deckle-edge, more of a torn edging effect. I have always liked these artificial coloured cards, where a photograph image has been used to make an overlay painting and then the photograph almost entirely removed leaving this strange smooth rounded edged image.

Official, but very long postcard issued for the Life-Boat week event held in Lyme Regis, Dorset. The card was designed to have a stamp applied and to have this cancelled with a special event post mark – ‘LIFE – BOAT WEEK 1978 / 22 JUL 1978 / LYME REGIS, DORSET’. The shape of this card puts some collectors off, but I like unusual postcards, and this one also has some philatelic interest as well, so I like it.

I do understand people’s fascination with the seaside, and how it can bring back fond holiday memories. Things though, are a bit different for me because I have always lived in a seaside town, or, excepting a couple of years, near to a beach. So, for me the beach has always been there, but regardless of this, or perhaps partially because of it, I have always loved beach towns and cities and areas, also beach art. The postcard format has always been a superb format for beach art and there is a long history of such like postcard issues. This one here is a modern one which I bought only last week in my own town.

In the last couple of days I have received through the post two postcards from postcard friends of mine. These cards show the benefits of having friends in the hobby who send you interesting cards from around the world either on trips or because they live in other countries. This one here is from David and Pat Rye who are in Texas visiting their son. This card depicts an historic day in modern American history. This is President Kennedy in his motorcade a little while before he was assassinated in Dallas.

David and Pat have used the cactus plant ‘Forever - Global’ circular shaped self-adhesive postage stamp to post this to me. I love these circular ones and have been collecting them on postcards for a few years now. As with all of this companies Disney themed cards, many of which have appeared on the website previously, the reverse side has also been made to look interesting, here by use of a grey fade of the front image across the entire reverse side.

This postcard has come from a fairly-new contact and fellow postcard collector from America, Frank Roche, otherwise known as ‘The Postcardist’ on his podcasts. Frank recently had the mad idea of interviewing me for one of his podcasts which he has released out their into the ether… all this modern technology goes above my head, but doing the interview was fun and Frank must have liked it as he has decided to call it ‘Postcardist Master Class’ (the title was his idea …not mine, I hasten to add, he says with a smile, but it is nice that Frank seems to feel that I know what I am talking about!)

The podcast is Postcardist Episode 12 and can be found at:

http://thepostcardist.com/postcardist-episode-12-postcardist-master-class/

Or you can find it by searching for ‘Postcardist’ where ever you normally seek your podcasts.

Frank has since sent me this delightful artwork postcard which has immediately gone into my collection.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Frank has used a moon ‘Forever - Global’ circular shaped self-adhesive postage stamp to post his card to me, along with a Chinese Lunar new year ‘Year of the Dog’ Forever value stamp (I will quickly explain what I mean by ‘Forever’ stamp as some people may not know. The ‘American postal authority’ sell stamps marked up as ‘Forever’ as their value, and as the word nicely explains these can be used forever, but what it also means is that if the cost of postage increases the stamps can still be used but if bought after the increase will cost the buyer more. This system also helps the postal service as they do not need to print new valued stamps for every price increase – the one interesting aspect of this is that just before an announced price increase people buy up quantities of stamps to use in the future thus saving some money). The combination of a Lunar New Year stamp alongside a stamp depicting the Moon appeals to me and make a nice stamp connection.

There are also eight Jersey stamps applied across the top – 5p St Mary’s Church issue from 1976 (SG 139) – cancelled 15th November 2000. In the bottom left corner there is an Austrian stamp issued in 1999 – 13s World Heritage Site, Schonbrunn Palace, Vienna (SG 2528) – which has been cancelled with a special pictorial ‘LAUDA AIR 2000 – 2001, year of the Dragon into the year of the Snake (Chinese Astrological years) hand stamp dated 31st December 2000 (New Years Eve of course – I wonder if this cancel was for a special overnight year change flight?). It is an unusual usage, probably passed around for a collector, but it only cost me £1, although looking at other prices on it euro 10 and euro 3.50 it looks like others have paid more for it in the past.

This is one of the many French produced maxi-card styled issues. This one is for the 1966 stamp issue which depicts this stained-glass window (stamp issued 22 Oct 1966). The stamp has been applied at the bottom and has been cancelled first day of issue with a special related pictorial hand stamp. My favourite thing about this card is that the main picture at the top has been printed on a sheet of plastic which makes it look like a real stained glass window, or at least the effect of one, a very clever little addition to the cards design and one which I really liked, although the real look of this is somewhat muted by the scanned image (the plastic sheet the window design is printed on shines in the light when you turn the card in any light – a very clever aspect)

This style of postcard, with large block letters which name a location and in which of each is an individual picture of a landmark or location, is an American postcard tradition. The type of ‘linen’ card used here is also an American postcard type not found anywhere else, that I know of. If you look closely at the surface of the card you will see a type of texture to it, almost like a piece of cloth or linen, from where the card type’s name originates from (I believe – please tell if this is otherwise). During the 1940’s these linen printed cards were very popular, and I have seen adverts by American collectors asking for this specific type of card. This card here therefore covers two of Americas major postcard conventions. It is also a very nice card.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

I have a friend who collects ‘Disabled/Handicapped/Diversity’ themed philatelic items (please note I am aware that ‘Handicapped’ is no longer accepted, quite rightly, as a descriptive term – but it is an historically used term and my friend collects it in all its use, both bad and inappropriate, even then, but especially in its historic use). She would very much like to own this card because of the cancellation used on it. It fit very nicely into her exhibit, which I have seen and enjoyed. The cancellation reads as:

PITTSBURGH, PA 4

“HIRE THE HANDICAPPED

ITS GOOD BUISNESS”

1952

The sender has used two 1c George Washington definitive stamps, first issued 25/04/1939, but these two here have imperforate bottoms (no perforations across the bottom of the stamps), and this indicates to me that they are booklet stamps and the booklets for this issue were not issued until 27/01/1939 (information obtained from my ‘The Postal Service Guide to U.S. Stamps – 28th Edition – this is illustrated in my Books section under ‘BOOK LISTING’ then BOOKS 1)

This simple postcard was designed for this specific stamp and coin show, held in De Gracia, Barcelona. It is in fact, as stated on the front of the card, an official edition. A Spanish stamp has been applied and cancelled with the events special hand stamp dated for the first day of the show – 12 August 1951. I normally find that this type of postcard design often has a plain back (as everything required is on the front anyway), but this one does have a postcard back and what appears to be an individual printed number, which I suspect was added after the card was printed – the number on this card is 001051, which seems to indicate that quite a few were produced.

Can any other place on earth be so filled with hope as Lourdes, in France? It is a much-visited location, with many hoping for a cure to their ailments, as per the legend (I use the word legend here with no intention to cause offence to those whose beliefs are that this location is connected to a true historic event). Because of this massive influx of visitors, it should come as no surprise to hear that there have been many postcards issued here as souvenirs for these thousands. This one here was posted from Lourdes in 1964 and is a nice photographic image of the Grotto. Over the years, through buying small collections of cards and through finding the odd nice single card, I have obtained a handful of postcards of this location (they are common after all) and I find the illustrations fascinating.

Published by

BROWNLEE NINETEEN-FORTY-TWO

(Printed and Published in England)

Ref: 2

I thought it had to be time for another Walt Disney related postcard, but I decided it should be one of the more unusual ones I have recently bought. This one came from a charity selection I received last month, but the postcard is far older.

This is a group of carton characters from the feature film ‘The Three Caballeros’ (the postcard misses out the ‘THE’ at the start of the films title for some reason) which was a mix of animation and live action film. It is an unusual film, and one which, although a pioneer in its content at the time, now seems a little weird and is not one of the companies classics, although the characters are still quite well known, especially Donald Duck of course. The curious thing is that I really enjoy this film and have it on DVD. The film came out in 1944, and was filmed during the second world war, although the film in no way has any connection to this period. Disney filmed this in Mexico and South America because this area was not affected by the war and it was somewhere to go and film without any interference and restrictions. I also think that this postcard is from around the time this film came out or certainly not long after, so the mid to late 1940’s (possibly the 1950’s but I have my reservations about it being that late). It is a collectible Disney card because of how unusual it is. On eBay I would not be surprised if this rated a price of £10+, but from a postcard dealer probably nearer £5 - £7.

Number unknown (left side) because the stamp has been stuck over the reference number – and 485/7 which is beside it.

So, clearly there were more to this series. Even though I am missing some I was pleased to get this many together in one shop. The story here appears to circulate around the stork bringing this lady some dolls, which I assume are to represent babies, possibly, although she does not seem too pleased to have received them! Again, this set was bought recently, at the same time and place as the series shown below, and for the amazingly cheap price of just under £1, ‘definitely’ worth every penny in my mind.

I have always liked postcards which come in a series, although here the ladies dress does change colour from blue to pink, although again these colours are artificially applied to the negatives, so they are not the real colours. Clearly these are the same people in the same studio with the same backdrop image. This series is from France, where this style of card and series idea seems to have been most prevalent.

There are five cards here but even that may not have been all the postcards issued as part of this series or set. These were a recent acquisition whilst I was last in France and these five cards cost me less than £1, which I considered to be an amazing bargain.

I have mentioned before my fascination as a youth in the early Egyptian history, brought on by an early visit to the British Museum and seeing the Tutankhamun exhibition. I later as an adult visited the valley of the Kings and went into his tomb, and the tombs of other pharaohs. As a result, I often pick up any postcards I find which depict Egyptian artefacts as I still find the shape and style of these appealing. This is a cheap card I found in a dealer’s box somewhere. It comes from the museum in Turin and it also goes to show just how many of the Egyptian pieces are now still to be found in museums outside of Egypt.
