It is time for me to apologise again for confronting you with my terrifying visage! I have previously posted some of my ‘Photocards’ from previous visits to Wat Disney World in Florida. These are obtained through use of a ‘photo-booth’ style box, located in the exit area of the ‘Figment’ Imagination ride in the Epcot theme park. Each photocard is $5, although this year for the first time I received two of each ‘picture’ for my $5 (something which I suspect was a machine error, although this is not confirmed). I usually obtain the special unique dated design for the year of my visit, although this year I found several different year designs thus forcing me to inflict on you more than one photograph of my features (further apologies are offered for subjecting you to this).  Jo says I should try and smile! But I am not sure that helps any (he says, laughing).

All three of the designs I picked appealed to me greatly and I was very impressed with the 2018 designs.

I did try and smile on this one! I think these make a superb personal souvenir of a visit to the theme park and as a bonus you can have these added to your photograph package at no extra cost (although this package may need to be bought if you do not get it for free with your holiday package). You have four pictures taken each time you use the booth and then you choose one of these for your photocard. The other three which you discard are included, with the full boarder, as part of your photo package (which comes free as part of your holiday package for us UK visitors, but it can also be bought by others attending the parks – the package is called ‘Memory Maker’).

This is a good example of the eclectic range of people who are depicted on this Galleries excellent postcard issues. This one was an interesting one for me as I have always been interested in modern football related postcards, but, although Rio Ferdinand was a top-level football player here in the UK he is now better known, I think, as a television sports pundit, one whose experience is sought for after game discussions. So, which collection do I put this card into? Sport/Football or Television? Or does it even matter?

This card was picked up on my most recent visit to the galleries shop. It is not one I had seen there before.

Unknown Printed Personal Photograph Postcard

I wonder who this sailor was. There are no details recorded on this postcard and from this I assume that this was a photographic option employed by a local printer (or a more ‘wide spread’ photographic company – but I don’t think so). The sailor depicted would have gone into a photographic studio and had his photograph taken which was then printed within this boarder of text and military images (possibly chosen from a selection of such like options). The postcards would then be printed and given to the buyer, the sailor (although this would have taken a little while, it was not the instant process we have these days). When I saw this, I had to have it for my collection. Judging from the tank shape bottom left this is a WWII era printed card, so this sailor was possibly involved in that period of fighting. There are more questions than answers with this card, but I love it.

JAPANESE POSTAL STATIONERY POST CARDS

I have posted some of these before, some baseball ones I seem to remember, but as with the previous posting(s) I do not know anything about these issues. I can surmise certain things from the images, but exact reasons for release are not known to me (after all you can-not know everything, collecting would be boring if you did!) So, what are these cards all about then? This one here depicts fisherman, traditional ones who use trained cormorants to catch their fish. The cormorants have a piece of thin rope tied around their necks which prevents them from swallowing the fish the catch in their beaks. The fisherman then removes the fish (traditionally the cormorant always receives one of the ‘caught fish’ at the end of the trip as their reward. As the image depicts fisherman I wonder if the bottle depicted on the left is a bottle of fish sauce. I suspect it is. I nice card for those who collect ‘fishing’ as their theme.

The two cards depicted below show, on the left (far left) a cartoon hot air balloon, in an old-fashioned balloon shape, which appears to have a whole family in it (I like cartoons). The card on the right (near left) is a lovely bird themed card, a subject I have always liked. I picked up all three of these at STAMPEX on Wednesday this week.

This lovely early art postcard was found yesterday at the STAMPEX INTERNATIONAL show in London. It was in a box full of ship related postcards which had all been reduced to just £1 each. I bought 25 postcards, some of which were originally priced at £6 and £8, although this one here was a much cheaper one, but still a nice card image.

Although the PHQ Stamp Card was printed and published by ROYAL MAIL,

I do not know who is producing these coin embedded versions  

This are appearing on eBay currently, with several different versions being offered with the cheaper ones being around £5, but other designs being nearer £10 (the BB8 card with coin is £10). Basically, someone has laminated a PHQ Stamp Card and then cut the circular hole on one side and then encapsulated a Star Wars coin shaped medallion (this is not a legal tender coin) inside. It is an unusual item, one which uses a postcard but transforms it into a different type of collectible. As a Star Wars collector, I wanted one of these as an example in my collection. From what I can see, different medallions have been used on different PHQ Cards. This one has a General Grievous medallion, who has nothing to do with K-2SO, but I don’t think that matters too much to me or it seems whoever is producing these.  The person doing these has also applied an actual stamp to the front of the card as well, before laminating the card. If you are interested, then check out eBay as these are doing the rounds right now.

I was at the Autumn STAMPEX show, now called STAMPEX INTERNATIONAL, yesterday and picked up my free show postcard. Now, I am not a big fan of the last few issues, which moved away from depicting specific philatelic items and moved on to advertising styled designs. I am not saying this is a bad design, its actually-quite attractive, it’s just that I preferred the earlier issues which held some philatelic interest.

If the postcard issues have not been as interesting, then the show itself seems to be following this trait. This recent show, still on until Saturday (when I shall be returning to take part in a club meeting), seems to have less stalls than usual and less show souvenirs. Royal Mail have also reduced their stand considerably and for the last two shows have not had any ‘Post & Go’ machines there, so some of the most popular show collectibles have been removed. But, it is still an event that you can find some interesting postcards at, and although I bought less than I have in the past, I still added one or two very nice items to my collection. So, for the moment, and the near future, I will continue to attend this event.

I have only just discovered that Liz Frazer passed away on the 6^th September. I had the pleasure of meeting Liz many years ago when I was helping-out on a postcard stall at a Memorabilia show. Liz was on the same stall signing postcards of her ‘Carry On’ film posters which had been published by the London Postcard Company. As a result, I spent an entire day sat beside her helping-out with collecting money and sorting out the stock to be signed, which also included some lovely large photographs. Liz kindly signed a range of postcards for me, which I do not have time to dig out of storage, but when I next come across them I will post them here, and a large black and white photograph. We spent some time chatting and it amazing to listen to her stories about Sid James and other actors she had performed beside. At the end of the day, Liz very kindly gave me, a signed exclusive picture from her display, one which was not available to anyone else. She was a lovely person to spend time with, forthright and honest, which I think some found to be a fault, but we got on really-well and when I saw her at future signing events she always said hello and took time out to speak to me and invite me round to her side of the stall.

I bought this unusual card from a postcard dealer who unfortunately did not know the cards source. It could possibly be an official release, but it just does not feel good enough, but then did it need to be any better! As a collector of TV postcards, I always buy anything like this that I see as there is always the chance, if not probability, that I will never see another example. The South Bank Show was an iconic programme, but one which rarely appears on postcard.

This one is in my TV collection because of the obvious MTV connection. I have wondered for a few years now if anyone out there collects MTV as a theme. If they do there are plenty of postcards available.

I had never heard of Spyro either, but if you had I assume you like computer games, as this seems to be what this character comes from. I liked this postcard because the dragons are all depicted on individual removable stickers. The computer game came out in October 2005, so I assume this card also dates from that year, or very soon after.

What I really liked about this side of this postcard is the mention of the old shop company ‘Woolworths’, with their logo top left. It was a sad day when this company closed-down. There was a Woolworths in the High Street of my home town through out my youth and well into my adulthood. I had a girlfriend who used to work behind the sweet counter there, fond memories.

I knew about the existence of a ‘MUPPETS POSTCARD BOOK’ for many years, but could I find one? Well, no, not for a long time anyway. Finally, I found one and managed to obtain it through eBay. The English version was published by Magna Books, Leicester and contained 30 postcards (I have just checked on eBay and there is one there going for $94.95 + $22.75 postage, I really hope no one pays that for it as it is way, way too much!) But, I do not know who issued the European (outside of Britain – although soon with Brexit that will be the case the anyway!) version of this postcard book, but this postcard here is from the Europe Edition. I believe, but it needs to be confirmed, that the images used in the UK book and the Europe Edition were the same.

Den Hague is The Hague in the Netherlands, so it comes as no surprise to find this copy, removed from the book (it has a perforated edge down the left side), has been used with a Netherland (Nederland) postage stamp, if I am right this was posted in 1994.

There was a time in the 1990’s, and 2000’s when everyone was going to Thought Factory to have their postcards printed. I myself used them several times to print postcards I produced (a couple anyway). This was all before the digital printing processes made the production of postcards so much easier. So, when ever I see a postcard with a Thought Factory reverse it brings back fond memories of a certain postcard period.

As an aside, I wonder if the Cooper Gallery is still going? Does anyone know?

Even without the company’s name down the centre I would have recognised this as a Thought Factory printed postcard. When you go through modern postcard stock from the 1990’s it is amazing how many people used them for their postcard output.

WESTMINSTER BRIDGE

I found this postcard whilst visiting the below mentioned stamp shop on the Cayman Islands. Quite why a mint postcard depicting Westminster Bridge was on sale here I can only surmise, but it was not alone. This one depicts a London I recently read about in a book about the history of the London fog. I am not sure if it is just the quality of the image, the quality of the printing, fading over time or just that, as it often was at the turn of the last century, just very foggy. Whatever the actual reason for it, you can barely see the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, as it is known. The image appealed to me as it was not long ago that I read that book I mentioned and I was thus interested in the idea that it could have been the fog that was the issue here.

I always thought this image was a bit gruesome for a children’s programme, but then each of the images depicts Captain Scarlet being killed in some way or another, although of course he was indestructible, so could not die!

The original series of Captain Scarlet commenced on the 29^th September 1967 and ran until the 14^th May 1968. There was only one series of the original programme, although there was a more recent animated version as well. In all there were 32 original episodes, a number which shows that this was aimed at the US market as well as you needed this sort of number to make something a success at that time.

Most people remember the series just as being called ‘Captain Scarlet’, but its proper full title was ‘Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons’. I was always a big fan and I have the complete series on DVD (I also have the animated recent series on DVD as well, both are in my children’s TV programme collection).

Although I love this set there are some images which have not been included in it. There was one with Captain Scarlet falling from a skyscraper, one with him about to be squashed by a tank, one of him about to be crushed by falling wooden cases (possibly in a warehouse or similar) and one of him falling from a moving car. It would be nice if these last four were also produced on postcard (I will have to keep checking).

This is a lovely postcard view and one I hope to be seeing myself in just a few weeks-time as I will be flying out to New York in October for my first ever visit to this city. It is from here that I commence my ‘across-America’ holiday. I also hope to pick up a few New York themed postcards myself whilst I tour the city for the couple of days I am there. Frank Roche, otherwise known as the ‘Postcardist’, has excelled himself this time with his latest postcard sending. On the 7^th September four different John Lennon postage stamps were issued in America. Frank has kindly applied one of each of the four different coloured designs on this postcard and had it posted and cancelled on that date, thus making this a first day of issue usage. What a lovely card. When this arrived this morning I was delighted, so, thank you very much Frank, much appreciated.

THE ART OF VINATGE DC COMICS

This is the second postcard from this boxed set that I have received, which indicates what a popular box set it is. There are some well-known Justice League characters here: Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Green Lantern and The Flash. I wonder how many of the cards from this box I shall receive over time? I did after all put down Superheroes as one of my topics. This has four nice stamps on it as well.

Four USA stamps have been used to post this postcard to me in the UK. The stamp which interests me the most here is the Sally Ride one. She was an American astronaut, physicist and engineer. She joined NASA in 1978. She was the first American woman in space in 1983, two Russian female cosmonauts beat her into space, Valentina Tereshkova (1963) and Svetlana Savitskaya (1982). She flew on the Space Shuttle ‘Challenger’ twice and was on the investigation team that looked-into the disaster when the Challenger blew up after take-off. She also took part in the investigation into the Columbia disaster as well and was the only person to be on both investigation teams. Sadly, she passed away in 2012 from pancreatic cancer. I think she deserved to be remembered on a stamp issue.

A classic tourist view postcard, one from New Zealand. I do have some view postcards from New Zealand, but I have never been there.

This postcard was sent to me by Lachlan, who is aged just 10 years, so, ‘postcrossing’ really is used by people of all ages. One thing I will say is that the stamp used here is a really smashing one. It is a $2.40 value circular Kiwi stamp within a square outer boarder area. It is nice that the whole thing has been stuck down as I suspect some would have removed the outer boarder section.

GREAT RAIL JOURNEYS LIMITED

Next month Jo and I will be going on another holiday. This is one which I have been planning on taking for well over ten years now after I saw an advert for it in a copy of the Radio Times. This holiday is one of many which is run by the holiday company ‘Great Rail Journeys’. This one starts in New York and then travels across the US by various railway system through Washington, Chicago, Denver, Falstaff, Los Angeles and then finishes up in San Francisco. This trip is going to put a tick into many of my ‘bucket list’ locations.

Yesterday we received the travel documents through the post. Included was our luggage labels and itinerary book with, I was delighted to see, four exclusive postcards, and these were very nice designs as well. It never ceases to amaze me where some of my postcards originate from and this is a good example of postcards coming out of an unusual source, which I was previously unaware of.

What a superb, and original, poster design. I know that poster designs are a popular theme, and this one has the added-bonus of being railway themed thus hitting one of the most popular of the many different transport themes. As you need to be travelling on a holiday with this company to obtain these postcards I believe they are going to be very hard to source by others.

The last of the four postcards, and a cracker. Although it is not stated on the postcard anywhere this image was taken at St Pancras Station in London and the statue you can see is of the Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman.

What a cracking set of postcards, and such a nice addition to be sent out to people who have booked holidays with them. I love the fact that they have included postcards with their sending as this goes nicely as an old form of correspondence alongside an old form of transport.

“POSTCARD GALLERY” series

Today is the anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. I remember that day only too well, as do many others and it would be fair to say that we have lived in a different world since, one changed by that day’s events.

This postcard harks back to better days and the sender’s message stated that they were going to be visiting the following locations on that day: “Statue of Liberty, Statton [sic -the correct spelling is Staten] Island, World Trade Building and a boat trip”.

One incident can change the whole approach to certain postcards. Before the attack you could pick up postcards depicting the World Trade Center buildings for just a few pence. To be fair they were numerous and considered near valueless at the time. Clearly the attack was going to change that as the buildings were to be etched on the psyche of an entire generation. Now images like this on postcard are highly collectible. It is just sad that something so terrible had to happen to make it so.

The message seems so innocuous and so indicative of a holiday postcard message. It is only now, years on and after the towers coming down that we look at this message and see something compelling about its content.
