POLICE RANGE ROVER

Publisher – Printer unknown

Presumed to be a private publication

I have an interest in police vehicle postcards (I even published two myself some years back). This is a range rover. Essex Police did have one or two of these, but this is definitely- not an Essex vehicle (but, can-not make out the badge on the side). A nice, and possibly quite hard card to source.

This company have issued some superb archive sketches and images from Disney animated films, many of which have not appeared on postcard before. This is a cracking and unusual image from the design work for the film ‘The Aristocats’, which I saw in the cinema as a kid when it first came out. These cards were at the top end of cost when originally released but can now be found on dealer’s stalls for around 50p (upwards to £1 depending on image – but, at the moment, they mostly seem to be around the 50p mark)

This is the second J. K. Rowling portrait issued on postcard by this gallery, the other one being a painting, this one is clearly a photographic portrait. This one is a recent issue I believe as I first saw it last month on my previous visit, when I picked it up, but it is still on sale as I saw it again in the gallery shop yesterday. This would make an unusual addition to any ‘Harry Potter’ themed collection (which is another topic/theme which I collect in both postcards and stamps).

There is also a fair run at Norwich by the same people and I am left to assume this was one of the cards for one of those fairs. No date or details on this card to indicate which year this is from, but what a cracking image by John Pulham.

I am currently in London sitting in my hotel room waiting to go out to Chinatown for dinner. My hotel is literally just 3 to 4 minutes- walk away from Downing Street, in fact I think if I could stand on the roof of my hotel I might even be able to see the entrance to Downing Street, probably not, but it’s that close.

So, it seemed logical to post this card on the webpage today to celebrate our two-night stay in our nations capital city, good old London Town. We arrived just after 1200hrs and I have already bought 20 postcards! I have found a superb Prince Harry and Meghan related design which I will post on the webpage at the weekend when we get back.

These have a been a bit like buses recently, none for ages and then the last three sets all received together. So, I have a bit of catching up to do. This set came out two months ago, but it is a nice set. I like the RAF aircraft paintings and then you have the Red Arrow stamps in the miniature stamp sheet, which also means there is a card for the stamp sheet as well (well, two here as the sheet has been cut in half and attached to two copies to receive first day cancels.

WEST QUAY

Published by

STENGEL & Co.,

LONDON EC (39 REDCROSS STREET)

Printed at works in Dresden

Ref: 17802

This is a nice black and white photograph which has been slightly colour tinted, which is best shown by the funnel of the steamer boat included in the image. The inclusion of the boat adds collectability to this card, although the vessel is not named. It looks like what we now have as tourist ferry boats, although here it would have been a fully working vessel. This was another superb 50p bargain from STAMPEX last year (from the same box as the two Edinburgh postcards depicted below)

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This was posted from Greenock to Palermo in Italy on the 8th October 1904. The King Edward VII one penny red stamp has been cancelled with a nice strike of the Greenock circular cancel with double arcs either side of a cross at the centre bottom of the cancel. There is also a boxed circle Palermo cancel dated 10th October. The creation of the divided back occurred in 1902 in the UK, but some countries took a while to take up this design and it looks like the sender was unaware of how to use one as they have still written their message on the front of the postcard and only placed the address on the back. This card was therefore caught between the invention of the divided back and the knowledge and use of this card as a universal design.

EDINBURGH, HOLYROOD FROM CALTON HILL

Small sized postcards by unknown publisher /printer

Posted from Edinburgh in 1898

I came across these much smaller than normal sized postcards in a sale box at a STAMPEX show last year. They cost me just 50p each and were one of those bargains that you just can’t believe you have come across when you see them. The cards are superb and are now 120 years old, which is old for any postcard let alone photographic ones.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARDS

These were both posted to different persons, but at the same address in Austria Hungary (as it was back then – the location itself has an historic touch as this was broken up after the first world war into different countries). Both postcards have nice clean usage and clear cancels with two black arcs either side of the number 11 at the bottom. These were worth every penny of 50p each!!

This privately produced postcard, which was probably printed in a quite low number, depicts artwork for a Concorde stamp that was not used. I like the more unusual postcards like this and I also have an interest in stamps as well, so, this card covers two interests.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

Free Odeon Cinema Exclusive

Character Cards

Set of 4

Tonight, I saw the new Star Wars film; ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’. Was it good? Well, it was OK. It was not the best Star Wars film but thankfully it was also not the worse by far. I enjoyed it for what it was, and it was certainly watchable and had some good actors in it and some little nods and references to Star Wars history which were fun to watch out for. I also really liked the robot character L3-37 (but no character card for her, which was a shame as she was my favourite character in the film).

At my Odeon cinema they had four Odeon exclusive character cards which people attending this film could pick up – each visitor could have one set each. As stated above these are not postcards, but that does not make them any less collectible. The character cards are shaped like the playing cards used in the game Solo plays against Lando in the film – the game is called Sabacc.

I really like these, and they made great souvenirs of my visit to watch the film – I expect copies will turn up on eBay if you want one, or you can check out the film at your own local Odeon cinema and see if they have copies of the cards (it would be interesting to know if these are a UK exclusive, or not).

TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN

WEDNESDAY 11TH AUGUST 1999

THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH

We travelled down to Cornwall in 1999 to see the eclipse and camped just outside Mevagissey. The eclipse was an amazing experience and one which we all enjoyed, and it was well worth the trip down and the horrendous queues of traffic leaving Cornwall later that same day!

Because we saw the eclipse I went out of my way to obtain as many related postcards as I could find and buy, and there were quite a few. This one here I bought from a cheap box, the dealer having placed it there I suspect because it has been used, but I suspect he never read the message!

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Interestingly the sender travelled down to Cornwall to see the eclipse as well, and they stayed in a campsite just outside Mevagissey, so I wonder if they were in the same campsite as us? It s more than probable as the campsite we were in appeared to be the main one outside the town. They probably came here for the same reason we did which was that Mevagissey was in the centre of the band of area which would receive the complete eclipse. The message on this postcard made it more interesting for me as I like used postcards which have a connected message. This was sent to Norway so has a nice 30p machin head definitive stamp applied.

This is a famous image, and one which was reproduced recently on an Irish stamp, one which caused some controversary although it became an award-winning stamp and was extremely popular with the general public.

This postcard was published by a company that I have mentioned many times before because they have published many of the Disney World related postcards which are on sale outside of the theme parks. I have depicted a wide number of these on past pages, many depicting the princesses and ‘Frozen’ characters. This one goes to show that they issue far more than just Disney themed cards.

There is a quite good little biography of Che Guevara on the reverse side which I will show below.

Card is slightly larger than the normal size which is the norm for this companies cards.

HOLOGRAFIX POST CARD

The scan of this card does not do it justice. The image of the carved faces at Mount Rushmore are printed on what was at the time revolutionary holographic shiny surfaced card. This is made up of lots of diamonds which reflect light from different angles which means as you tilt the card light is refracted across it making it seem to change light and shape as you do this. I remember when this type of card was first being used, which was not very often as initially, and for many years this was an expensive type of card to produce, so, inevitably the postcards were expensive to buy. Early examples like this should be far more collectible than they probably are as they mark an interesting time of experimentation with card types, materials and printing processes.

POLICE

Highest number of officers in our history.

“Despite all that has been achieved, the best is yet to come”

Ken Livingstone

Mayor of London

Official joint London Mayor and Metropolitan Police Postcard

This postcard was released prior to March 2007, so over eleven years ago. Oh, how things change! The horrendous cuts imposed by Teressa May when she was Home Secretary over a number of years now means that the Metropolitan police force probably has less officers in it then it did in the 1990’s! I bet many would like to have this 2007 position back. This postcard is now an historic postcard documenting a different time for the police, one I fear that has now long gone. Ken Livingstone's quote was to prove to be very, very wrong...

On Saturday (yesterday, although it feels like longer ago as today has been a very busy day) I attended the Bury St Edmunds Postcard Fair. This here is the postcard that every visitor to the fair received with their programme. It does not really count as a free postcard as the entry to the fair is £1.50 per person, so this is kind of included with the admission fee, but it is worth remembering that many fairs charge and entry fee (not all, I know) with no special postcard included. I do like a postcard fair special postcard and John Pulham has designed some of the best of the recent ones I have seen.

Ref: 721[or possibly another 7]53

A superb turn of the last century foreign street view photographic postcard from South Africa. Adderley Street is a famous location and is now the main street of the central business district (downtown) of Cape Town. It was originally named ‘Heerengacht’ but it was changed to Adderley Street by Mayor Hercules Jarvis in 1850 in honour of British politician Charles Bowyer Adderley who fought successfully against the British Governments plan to turn Cape Town into a penal colony.

‘One of at least 10 depictions of a dodo by Savery, this painting is often called Edwards’s dodo, as it was once owned by the ornithologist George Edwards. It has since become an iconic image of the extinct bird’

Since my childhood I have been fascinated by extinct creatures, especially those made extinct by man or through the presence of man throughout history. This was the theme of my History ‘O’ Level project at school and the interest has remained with me throughout my life. This is a smashing square shaped postcard image (we discussed the museums use of square shapes on the previous NHM postcard posting – an Arctic Fox if I remember correctly). The thing about the dodo which I find most amazing is that there are no fully original stuffed examples of this bird in existence! We have reconstructions, the NHM museum itself has a great reproduced example, but other than bones and skulls there are no full skinned and feathered examples remaining. So, really, it is images like this which really tell us what the original birds truly looked like. Images are history and are often the only representations of long extinct creatures and demolished structures. Thankfully many have been recorded on postcard.

(Text from reverse side of Postcard)

I remember well being a schoolboy when Space Dust first came out and how popular it was with me and my fellow class mates. So, the descriptive text from the reverse side of this postcard could well relate directly to me. The pack depicted here is a strawberry flavour one, but my favourite flavour was orange, although I also seem to remember there was also a lemon flavour one, but I seem to remember that flavour was really-sharp and made you cringe a bit as you ate it. This postcard brought back so many memories from my school playground days I just had to buy it. I think this is why Robert’s postcards sell so well, they bring back memories, especially the ones showing items from the 1960’s to the 1990’s when many of us had our childhoods, at some point or other. These days this stuff is more often called 'Popping Candy' and it is something which is so popular that even the chef Heston Blumenthal has used it in his dessert recipes.

This is an early issue from Opie and one which I liked because of the artwork that appears on this tin. I am a birdwatcher as well and have always, since my very first days of postcard collecting hunted down any postcards that feature images of bird life. This would have gone into my collection whenever I had found it although I admit it was a recent find at a postcard fair.

I have also mentioned before that my Grandfather was a pigeon breeder, and as a result of this family connection, I have always been interested in these birds and this is a great early image of them.

This appears to be a promotional postcard for a stamp exhibition or show titled ‘Naples 58’ which I assume was held in Naples in 1958.

This is a nice example of a philatelic event publicity postcard, but what I found hard to fathom is that someone used this in 1988 as a delivery confirmation postcard! This seems to me to be a strange thing to do with something which is such an old and unusual postcard (which I assume has at least a little value in the stamp/postcard world).

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

As you can see this was posted in 1988 (according to the hand-written information) using two royal mail postage stamps. It seems a shame this was used in such a way, but the good side of this is that I found this in a cheap box and I suspect it was there because of its usage.

A knowledge of the history of the scandals attached to the presidency of Bill Clinton would be needed to understand the meaning of this postcard image and title as no descriptive details or historical facts (or alleged facts and rumours) are given, but then when this postcard was released, which was at the actual time, no one would have needed any explanation! Political humour has always been a standard in postcard publications and this is a modern example of a long-standing tradition. In any democracy it is the right of the people to mock their leader if they desire to do so, and someone nearly always does! If you are too young to know what this image relates to or just don’t remember it then I recommend you look up the ‘Clinton -Lewinsky scandal’ on the internet.
