PHILCO (‘PHILCO’ SERIES)

The comic designs around the concept of receiving a ‘Line’ of writing from someone have appeared on many old postcards. The items which could be seen as being a ‘Line’ sometimes changed across different designs, but the idea remained the same.

As can be seen here the current problem with mail items not being cancelled is not a new issue. The stamp has not been cancelled, so we do not know the exact year of posting.

Published by

Unnamed Publisher – but probably Colourmaster

Ref: PLC2066

Colour artwork of children have always been popular on postcards, so it seemed logical that when the multi-view cards were looking for something different, but popular, to place in the middle that children were chosen by some companies. Many used art-work that had previously appeared on postcards in full, as I suspect was the case this with this one.

I said late in 2017 and early on in 2018 that ‘Unicorns’ would be a major theme of 2018, and I was right, not just about the postcard aspect either as just before Christmas 2018 I saw loads of unicorn mugs, teapots, cuddly toys and other items. This postcard here was a new addition to the postcard collection very late in 2018 (it seemed to come out with the Christmas 2018 postcards).

A ‘NORMAN’ POST CARD

This is appropriately one of the cards I bought from the stamp shop I visited in Brighton on Saturday. I do like these multi-view postcards with a central animal motif, here a black cat, one of the popular additions to this type of postcard.

This is an unusual item I picked up on Saturday. The company have taken a birthday postcard and stuck this down on the front of a folded greetings card, the inside of which you can see depicted below where I have shown it opened- up. I shall place this unusual item in my novelty collection

A VALENTINE’S SERIES

Another of the postcards bought from the ‘Gustamps’ stamp shop in Brighton this past Saturday. It is a nice appealing postcard, but I think it ended up in my collection because the reason why we were in Brighton on Saturday was to celebrate my daughter’s birthday with a day out. So, a card which was issued to be used on a daughter’s birthday seemed appropriate. I therefore bought it.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This was used on the 18th February 1921, appropriately enough it was posted locally in the Brighton area. The stamp has been cancelled with a Brighton wavy line roller machine cancel.

Unknown Publisher (although I suspect ‘Colourmaster’)

These have no titles, beyond the text on the front, and have no reference numbers

The artist is not named either

I picked up these postcards from a shop I visited in Brighton on Saturday called ‘Gustamps’. It was nice to find so many cards from one series. I liked these a lot. Looking at the reverse side I suspect these are from the early 1970’s.

The novelty cards with these ‘moving eye’, often called ‘Google Eyes’, were popular for a while. Because the plastic cups used for the eyes stick out upwards from the card these are often found damaged and squashed down. But here the eyes still work and are pretty much undamaged, which is not bad when you consider this one was posted out of Spain in 1958.

There are some Disney film characters which do not appear on postcard as much as others, and some which are quite hard to find. Here you have the main characters from the 1977 Disney animated film ‘The Rescuers’ riding on the seagull from the film. The mouse characters were called Miss Bianca and Bernard, whilst the seagull was called Orville (the seagull’s brother, Wilbur, appears in the sequel).

I TRAVELED THE

WORLD

SHOWCASE AT EPCOT!

Official Disney postcard presented by ZIPLOC

If you go back and check out a posting I did on the 27th November 2016, you will see an entry related to the EPCOT WORLD SHOWCASE PASSPORT AND POSTCARD PACK package. Back then the package included a passport book, a large pin badge, sheets of stickers and a pack of postcards. When we visited last summer (2018) we bought packages for our two grandchildren and discovered that the package no longer includes the postcard pack. Everything else is still there. You can still take the passport and go around the world showcase and stop at each country and complete a page of the passport and collect a unique sticker from each passport post as well. Once you have all the stickers and have completed your passport you can take the completed book to any of the passport posts and upon production of your completed collection, they will give you a special and exclusive postcard, which can only be obtained in this way. This both my grandchildren succeeded to do and obtained their postcard.

Leo, my grandson, does not collect postcards, but he does collect pressed pennies and coins, for which he needed more money. So, we came to an arrangement and I now own one of these exclusive postcards. As you do quite a lot of work to collect one of these postcards those who get them seem to tend to keep them, so they are very hard to obtain. Other than the one I now own, and the one my Granddaughter now has I have not seen any others anywhere (except in the hands of those – mainly, in fact almost exclusively – children who were picking them up after completing their passports).

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

The scheme around obtaining this postcard via the collecting of the stickers etc is sponsored by ‘Ziploc’ who therefore have their name on this postcard. As part of the package, when you sign up to do the sticker collecting etc you also receive, at the start, an exclusive Ziploc bag to put everything in.

HOGWARTS EXPRESS

Official Warner Bros Studio Tour Postcard

This is one of the postcards which I bought whilst visiting the Harry Potter studio tour just outside central London. It is one of my favourites from the last visit.

Now, I have some advice about this card and the one depicted below. There is a massive (and I do mean Huge) gift shop at the end of the tour. This is well worth a visit and you will find some very interesting and exclusive tour postcards here… BUT, and this is the important thing, you will not find this card, or the one below in this shop. Halfway around the tour you will walk into a large area in which is located the Hogwarts Express, as depicted here on this postcard.

Opposite the train is a separate gift shop which sells items related to the Hogwarts Express and the railway aspects of the stories and films. This postcard here, and the one below is exclusive to this one gift shop, so if you do not pick these up here you can not do so later at the main gift shop.

Two early Oxford college undivided back postcards sent by the same person to the same address in 1902. Both the cards have space left around the image, to the right side on the top card and along the bottom on the bottom card, for the sender to write a message. This was because before the invention of the divided back postcard (which interestingly occurred the very year these cards were posted - 1902) only the address was allowed on the reverse side. I do love the quality of the printing on these early photographic postcards printed in Germany. I have said before that Germany was the centre of printing quality in the world, and as a result, postcards from many countries, especially the UK and the USA, were printed here. With these two images here, I think you can tell the quality by the definition obtained.

REVERSE SIDES OF THE ABOVE TWO POSTCARDS

(TOP)

Posted the 6th June 1902 from Oxford to Brighton with the King Edward VII half-penny green definitive stamp (letter postage was 1p, whilst postcard postage was ½p – which was one of the reasons postcards took off so much during this period) being cancelled with an OXFORD 1 circular date stamp.

(BOTTOM)

Posted the 24th May 1902 from Oxford to Brighton with the King Edward VII half-penny green definitive stamp being cancelled with an OXFORD 3 circular date stamp.

It is pure coincidence that these cards were posted to Brighton and the fact that I spent yesterday in Brighton, this did not occur to me until I typed out the addressed location above.

These are two nice clean early postcards which I bought last year sometime for not a lot. I like these, despite the colleges at Oxford not being a very collectible theme.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

I do not often see this companies cards with black printing on the reverse side, mostly these are blue printed. So, if you see a black print version they are from the older cards.

Published by

VALENTINE & SONS. LTD (DUNDEE & LONDON)

“COLLO COLOUR” POSTCARD

Ref: A8218

One of the things often said about stamp collecting is that it introduces people to different places around the world. I think postcard collecting is even better as this can introduce you to places you have never heard of before in your own country! There are some location names here on this multi-view postcard which were entirely new to me, like ‘Minnigaff’, which I now know is a village in Scotland. Minnigaff is a civil parish in the county of Kirkcudbrightshire in Dumfries and Galloway.

The main place listed on this card is Newtown-Stewart which is a town on the River Cree (also mentioned and depicted on this card) in the same area as Minnigaff. As one of their main industries seems to be tourism, I should not be surprised that this postcard was issued. Newtown Stewart lies on the southern edge of the Galloway Forrest Park, an area which supplies a large amount of work for the residents, forestry being another top industry for the location.

This unusual card, more a card than a postcard, despite the Post Card heading on the reverse side, was a free card issued out to promote the opening of the pub after a restoration, one described as stepping back 200 years.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

Some would argue, not necessarily incorrectly, that this is not a true postcard, but I don’t care, as this could possibly sit in my ‘Novelty’ collection as something different, or perhaps more correctly it would fit in my advertising collection.

It is a lovely postcard, but like many official Disney postcards it was not a cheap one. Peter Tatchell is a British human rights campaigner who was born in Australia in 1952, but who took up British citizenship from 1989. With time spent in politics, especially as a campaigner for gay rights working for the Labour party (1978 – 2000), as an Independent (2000 – 2004) and the Green Party since 2004.

This photograph is more a piece of art photograph rather than a historical photograph because Tatchell was not arrested at this time, although he was prosecuted for an offence related to a speech he gave during a protest at the Easter sermon by the Archbishop of Canterbury. As an aside, Tatchell was arrested, or at least detained, in Russia last year where he was protesting-against the treatment against gays in that country.

This postcard was on sale earlier last year but was another one which was not still available by the end of the year.

Official Promotional Postcard

BIG BEAR FILMS

As a specialist [I have to be a specialist in something I suppose] collector of television related postcards this is the type of postcard I like to find. As an official promotional postcard, you would not have been able to buy this card. The best way to have gotten a copy was to write to either the programme itself or one of the actors asking for an autograph.

‘My Hero’ ran for six series between 2000 and 2006. It was a comedy based around a rather dim-witted superhero called ‘Thermoman’ (Ardal O’Hanlon) from the planet Ultron who marries an earth woman called Janet (Emily Joyce).

I watched the first few series when it was originally on, but I have recently caught a few repeats in the ‘GOLD’ channel, and although a little ridiculous at times I had forgotten how much I had enjoyed it. So, when I came across this card on eBay for a couple of pounds, I picked it up.
