Today is not only the first day of a new year it is also the birthday of this webpage, which commenced on the 1st January 2016. So, this is our third birthday! I hope you have enjoyed all the postings and will continue to do so as we continue into this new year.

I came across this range of Marilyn Monroe ‘Birthday’ related postcard designs (and one ‘Christmas’ one which I posted on Christmas Day) whilst in Nuremberg in early December of last year (seems strange saying this as it was only last month, but today is the first day of a new year!) With today being what it is I thought these postcards would look great here today.

They have used a great photograph with this one, one I had not seen on postcard before (although I would not be surprised to find that it has appeared on one before).

I only found the one Elvis related postcard from this company, but it was in the rack alongside the above Monroe designs, and where postcards are concerned, I think Monroe has always been more popular, I’m not saying better, I’m just saying that Monroe postcards seem to be published more often. Having said this, I still think this one is great card, but this image has definitely-appeared on postcard before.
All these postcards were bought whilst on a trip, as were a number of other postcards depicted over 2018, both new modern issues and old cards bought at fairs and antique shops etc. Travel always enhances a collection and I hope further trips in 2019 will do the same thing, and more interesting and unusual cards will appear here.

VOTES FOR WOMEN
BELVA A. LOCKWOOD, LL. D
Privately produced campaign Postcard
UNITED STATES
Belva Ann Bennett Lockwood was born in New York in 1830 (24th Oct) and died on 17th May 1917. She was an American attorney, politician, educator and author. As this postcard shows she was also active in the women’s rights movement including the women’s suffrage. She was a member of the National Equal Rights Party and as a teacher and principal she campaigned for equal pay for women in education. She was also a proponent of the Temperance movement. Lockwood graduated from Law School in Washington D.C. and became one of the first female lawyers in the United States. In 1879 she successfully petitioned Congress to be allowed to practice before the United States Supreme Court. She was the first woman attorney to be given this privilege. Lockwood ran for president in 1884 and 1888 on the ticket of the National Equal Rights Party and through this was the first woman to appear on official ballots for this post (before any American historians get in contact, I am aware that there is some dispute over Lockwood being first and some people state that a Victoria Woodhull was the first woman to run for President).
All the above was unknown to me when I came across this postcard in an antiques shop in Flagstaff, Arizona, but I knew that 2018 was a big anniversary year in the UK for the votes for women movement, so when I saw the main heading, I knew I was going to be buying this card. Having done so, and returned to the UK, I looked up Lockwood on the internet. I discovered the fascinating and important history of this amazing woman. This is what I love about old postcards, and this one has-to-be pre-1917, the way they open- up history and can lead you to discover amazing people and their stories, ones you would otherwise have never come across. Not bad for $4, and to think about it, I think this might have been quite cheap to be honest.

THE WALT DISNEY FAMILY MUSEUM
The postcards available in the gift shop of this fantastic house museum depict some Disney related images which I have not seen on postcards before, and as they are exclusive to the museum, they are hard to source other than by paying a visit here. I was fortunate to do just this in October, and it was an expensive trip once I reached the gift shop. These really are great postcards.

As 2018 comes to an end, the year of the ‘#MeToo’ phenomenon and all the sexual politics and equal pay disputes, I think this piece of artwork, a poster styled piece, is quite indicative of the mood of the year. I bought this one earlier this year, but it has been on sale in the Tate Modern gift shop for a while now, certainly more than this year. I have thought this was an interesting design since I first saw it.

(One of the two numbers above could a reference number, or they are both part of the address)
This postcard has been in my collection for many years and I came across it whilst looking through a box of older postcards recently. This was after my visit to Nuremberg in early December this year (or last year if your reading this in the morning or later…he says with a grin). The scene on the card, which was posted in 1909, looked familiar, so I went back through my photographs taken on my break. If you look below you will see one of my photographs and you will realise why it rang a bell!
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
This postcard was posted from Nuremberg and the applied stamp has received the NURNBERG 2 B. A. circular date stamp dated 15th October 1909. The card was addressed to the UK to a Windsor address. The card was sent by Hermione (great name, and this shows that the name was around long before Harry Potter!)

(Centre) NEW PROMENADE AND BANDSTAND
(Bottom Left) CARLISLE PARADE, LOOKING EAST – (Bottom Right) WHITE ROCK GARDENS
Unknown Publisher
(But this looks like it must have been locally produced)
This is a nice multi-view postcard of scenes of Hastings in East Sussex. It has that ‘local’ printed look, you know what I mean, not as sharp, or as professional as a big publisher would have produced, but as a result I think it is a more interesting postcard.
REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD
Posted from Watford locally to another Watford address. Nothing particularly unusual about the card being used in another UK area (Watford is of course a town northwest of London), but I find it interesting that historically, and to this day, there has been a train line between Watford and Hastings. Did the sender, or a friend or family member of the sender, travel to Hastings by train on a trip and pick up this postcard and return to Watford with it.
The stamp, a George V definitive 1 penny red, has been cancelled with a WATFORD wavy line machine cancellation dated 1st December 1924 (Christmas is mentioned in the message)

This is a smashing film poster for this 1944 American technicolor [sic] musical made by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The film was based on the 1942 novel of the same name by Sally Benson.
Judy Garland was a bit of a tragic star really when you look at her private life, but on the screen she shined and became hugely popular.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS
LARGE SIZED MULTI-SIGNED CARD
First Day of Issue Card
This was a very large card (not really a postcard, although it was used with a set of comedy stars stamps which have been cancelled first day of issue). It has been signed by Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Jane Horrocks, Julia Sawalha and June Whitfield. Produced by the stamp cover company called ‘Benham’, who produced a few of these large stamped signed cards. This one was selling for around £75, but I expect it will increase now that the sad news of June Whitfield’s death has been announced.

The stamp sheet was too long to appear on a single PHQ card, so two were required with the stamp sheet cut into two and placed across the two cards. Both cards appear here. I think this was a delight. I like postal history, and post boxes anyway, but these designs, and the sheet boarder, are superbly painted and the end-result is one worth looking at and enjoying.
