EXHIBITION TRADE IN MIDI-PYRENNES

This is an interesting issue which is collectible because it features the Concorde, which is how I came across it. It also comes in different versions. There is this front, which has less text on it than the one shown below, and the one shown below which has additional text on the front. So far, I have only come across this one here with one reverse type layout, as shown immediately below. But the other version I have with four different reverse sides (see below).

If you compare this image with the one depicted above you will see that this has additional white text on the front, although the pictures and basic background design is the same. The additional text reads:

So far, I have found this design with four different reverse layouts. And, this is a perfect example of where a collector should check the reverse side of any postcard and never assume you already have the card just from the front design alone. Below I will depict all four different reverse types:

This last one, in my collection, is an invite card for two persons. Details would have been written on the cards that were sent out. This is a mint copy which was probably made available to collectors to complete their postcard selection.

I suspect, looking at the numbering, that I am missing a few examples of these myself but I doubt I will come across any more quickly, but this is part of the joy of collecting, looking out for cards to complete or increase set collections.

Paperchase

LLAMA

SHAPED POSTCARD

Ref: FSC C104990

I came across this shaped postcard in March in London. I like shaped postcards and all novelty styled postcards. With this one there is a bonus as the pink tasselled edging to the saddle, or rug across its back, is made of real material and has been applied to the postcard. If you look closely at the scan you might be able to see that this is real. If you like this one then check out any ‘paperchase’ shops that you might come across as this one is out there now.

DAVID

David Attenborough

Published by

BOOMERANG MEDIA

This is one card from a set of three which I found in my local Odeon Cinema ‘Boomerang’ Postcard rack in late March. Each of the three cards depicts a face from the world of television, both in-front and behind the camera’s.

Each of the card just gives the persons first name. This one here is David and this is quite clearly David Attenborough, who is a hero of mine. This, and the other two images are drawn by the artist Julia Scheele. They advertise something called ‘The Network’ which gives a free intensive introduction into the television industry. It states that if you want to make iconic TV shows then there are 60 places to be earned and those successful will spend four days at the Edinburgh TV Festival developing practical skills and learning from top programme makers.

LOUIS

Louis Theroux

Published by

BOOMERANG MEDIA

Louis is of course an iconic documentary maker and has produced television programmes about some of the more unusual people and institutions both here in the UK and around the world. His programme where he followed Jimmy Saville before his death has resonated onwards after the true story of his behaviour came to light. It makes even more chilling watching in hindsight.

SHONDA

Shonda Rhimes

Published by

BOOMERANG MEDIA

Don’t worry if this name does not immediately bring recognition to you. I did not know who this was and spent some time on the internet finding out who she was as the cards only give the persons first name on both the front and back of the card. Shonda is an American screenwriter and author and producer, who has worked on series such as ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Scandal’ and ‘How to get away with Murder’. As she has worked behind the cameras on these programmes it is probably no surprise that I did not immediately recognise her. But her inclusion here means that I have added someone new to my television collection.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

This is the ‘Shonda’ postcard but other than the use of the depicted persons first name all three cards have the same reverse layout.

SPRING STAMPEX

2017

PART 4

Yes, I still have not told you everything I came across and obtained two months ago, so here is what I suspect will be my last entry for the Spring STAMPEX show, but then there is another in September, the Autumn STAMPEX.

HAPPY POSTCROSSING

GUERNSEY

This was a postcard sold on the Guernsey Post stand and the postcard reproduces a stamp issued to celebrate the world of ‘postcrossing’ where people exchange postcards with others from around the world. This postcard has a copy of the stamp applied top right and cancelled with the first day of issue hand stamp – 14th July 2016 (the card and stamp were issued last year but the first I knew about the card was seeing it on the stand at Stampex this year)

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

On the Guernsey Post stand they had a special exclusive cachet which you could ask to have applied to any of their items. The cachet can be seen here top left corner. The cachet looks good and is quite big and was well placed here by the person on the stand.

HAPPY POSTCROSSING

This is the same postcard as above but without the stamp applied to the front

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

On this card, the stamp has been applied to the reverse side and here it has been cancelled with a simple ‘Guernsey Post Office’ circular entwinned lines hand stamp dated 14th July 2016, as previously stated, the first day of issue for this stamp. I also had the Guernsey Post Office’s special show cachet applied as well.

HAPPY POSTCROSSING

GUERNSEY

This is the second of the two postcards in this set depicting the second stamp in the ‘Postcrossing’ issue. This postcard has a copy of the stamp applied top right and cancelled with the first day of issue hand stamp – 14th July 2016.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

THE TOILERS OF THE SEA

BY VICTOR HUGO

150TH ANNIVERSARY

GUERNSEY POST OFFICE

I also saw this postcard on the same stand. It depicts all six of the stamps issued by the Guernsey Post Office for the 150th anniversary of the writing of the story ‘The Toilers of the Sea’ by Victor Hugo on the island of Guernsey.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

I decided to pick one of the stamps and have it applied to the postcard. I decided on the only one with a wildlife/animal content, the 70 value stamp which has the tentacles on it. I then had the stamp cancelled with the ‘Guernsey Post Office’ cancel dated for the day of my trip to Stampex (if a countries Post Office travels to an exhibition outside of their country, like Guernsey do at Stampex, their stand becomes an authorised post office, in its own right, and they can cancel mail directly at the stand – which is what happened here). I also had the show special cachet applied as well to make this an extra special personal souvenir.

TURKEY POST OFFICE

EXCLUSIVE SHOW CACHET

GALLIPOLI CAMPAIGN COMMEMORATIVE POSTCARDS

I also bought three postal stationery post cards on the Turkey post office stand at Stampex. The three cards each depict an enlarged image of one of three stamps with the appropriate stamp applied top right (so these are not postal stationery cards as they are not printed with a stamp print on them). I think the three cards and stamps commemorate Turkey’s first world war involvement and are especially related to Gallipoli, as I believe in Turkey the Gallipoli campaign is known as the Battle of Canakkale, which appears on the stamps. The stamps were issued in 2015 on 18th March and they have been cancelled first day of issue.

I bought the three postcards so that I could also obtain the special Stampex cachet which was exclusively available on their stand. All three postcards received the cachet. These were lovely cards and really cheap as well as I think they were a £1 for all three, and the cachet is applied free.

McDONALD’S

Non-Postcard Item

SMURFS – THE LOST VILLAGE

Saturday 15th April 2017

12pm – 6pm

At: McDonald’s Southchurch, 266 Eastern Avenue,

Southchurch SS2 4BN

This is not a postcard, but is of the same size and card type. I found this in my local McDonald’s and because The Smurfs have a strong television connection I picked up a couple for my collection. The thing I found interesting was that the address of my local McDonald’s, where I found this card, was printed on the card. So, this leads me to wonder if other branches have this same card but with their address on it. I am not sure I will be able to find out as the date of the event advertised is today – 15th April, unless of course other McDonald’s are having events on other dates (but I doubt it).

So, not a postcard. But, an interesting ‘Card’.

WALT DISNEY WORLD

FLORIDA

“A SWEET CELEBRATION”

“The Magic Kingdom celebrated its 25th Anniversary on October 1, 1996 with the largest anniversary confection ever. Cinderella Castle transformed for the occasion and served as a backdrop and most memorable icon of the 12-month gala at Walt Disney World Resort”

(Text from reverse side of Postcard)

I have been after a copy of this postcard for some years now since I learned of its existence. Copies do appear on eBay but they are far too expensive. There is one on there today which with postage included is £16, and this is one of the cheaper ones that has appeared over the last few years, £20+, including postage, is not unusual. So, imagine my joy when this one here turned up in a selection of Disney Cards I bought from a charity unseen this week (the Jungle Book ‘Athena’ card posted on the webpage yesterday was also amongst this large bundle).

The Castle was transformed into this massive cake for the 1st October 1996 anniversary. The castle was returned to its former glory on 31st January 1998. So, it was a relatively short lived, in Disney World terms, transformation so I suspect the postcards of it in this set up are less common than all the other versions (although ‘less common’ is set against the likelihood that thousands were still produced and sold – but they are very difficult to come across here in the UK).

This copy was posted to the UK in September 1997, during the anniversary period of celebrations, which ran for just over a year. There is a nice message on the reverse side of this postcard written by the sender:

Hello Mum, As you can see Cinderella’s Castle is a birthday cake as its 25th Anniversary of Disney Kingdom”

DOCTOR WHO

The new series commences tonight at 19:20hrs on BBC1. Peter Capaldi returns as the Doctor for what we now know will be the last time, but, he will have new assistant by the name of Bill Potts, who is played by Pearl Mackie. I will admit that I have liked Peter Calpaldi as the Doctor but the last couple of series have not been the best of the new seasons run and I will admit that I shall be watching tonight with some trepidation. I am also not too sure about the new assistant, but I have been here before and you never know until you let them settle in a bit. But, in an attempt to build up my enthusiasm, I have already obtained, in expectation of today, a postcard signed by Pearl Mackie, who plays the new assistant. So, to celebrate the return of Doctor Who I have chosen to post these two very relevant postcards:

Both the cards have the same reverse layout – not true postcards but they are always advertised as ‘Postcards’ when sold and by the BBC who issue these out. To any Dr Who collector these are much sought after items.

JUNGLE BOOK

DISNEY

Published by

ATHENA INTERNATIONAL

Ref: E2204396

I was a big collector of ‘Athena’ postcards when they were being issued and I built up a very large collection. Despite constantly looking at their racks, in their own Athena shops, and through dealer’s stock I was completely unaware of this postcard until it arrived this week in a bundle of ‘Disney’ related postcards. I wonder how I missed it! It is a smashing card and one I would have snapped up eagerly if I had seen it. Still, I have a copy now and I am delighted to find that I can still be surprised by Athena cards even now, years after the company ceased to be.

DAVID BOWIE

Stamp Issue – 14th March 2017

ROYAL MAIL

PHQ STAMP CARD ISSUE

I have been waiting for this set to arrive, it took some time because it was a very popular stamp set, but here it is. Bowie passed away last year (a Bowie postcard was placed on the webpage at the time).

As a fan of Bowie, I looked forward to this set and although some of the album covers are quite bland they are all interesting musically. As always, my cards have the respective stamp applied to the front and cancelled with a first day of issue special hand-stamp. The set was made up of six individual stamps, featuring album covers, and a stamp miniature sheet with four stamps depicting photographs from tours.

There is no stamp featuring Bowie’s most famous album cover, Ziggy Stardust and the spiders from Mars’, because this cover appeared on a stamp in the 2010 ‘Classic Album Covers’ set.

THE FIG TREE, WATFORD

Unknown Publisher – Probably locally produced

“THE FIG TREE, WATFORD is famous on account of the legend of the lady buried in the vault, who was an atheist, and on her death-bed is reported to have expressed a wish that if there were a God a fig tree might grow from her heart”

I do like unusual postcard images and when I saw this one I thought I would pick it up, especially as it was only a few pence. I also like doing research into postcards like this as often the background stories can be quite interesting, or sometimes fascinating.

This one shows what was a popular Victorian tourist attraction, thus the postcards I suppose, but it does seem people did come to visit this tomb and they also apparently took twigs from it as souvenirs. The basic legend, or story if you like, is contained in the text on the front of the postcard, see above at head of this section where I have reproduced this.

The fig tree, when it grew, dislodged the lid of the tomb and grew and grew by the looks of the picture. Sadly, or possibly not as it was someone’s tomb, the fig tree has now gone and the tomb has been renovated. I cannot find out exactly when the fig tree died, or was removed, but it seems it was here right up until at least the 1960’s.

Interestingly, as it is with many legends, there are more than one story as to who was ‘actually’ buried here. The postcard text says it was a Lady. But one popular one says it was a Naval Officer by the name of Ben Wangford, but there seems to be no evidence confirming this (i.e. no one seems to be able to find a naval officer of this name in naval records – not that this seems to have stopped this still being one of the stories!)

For those who want to be logical about this there is also a story that the fig tree was as a result of the vicar, who had a preference for eating figs, spitting the pips out as he walked past this spot. There is another issue around the buried person being an atheist as well as the tomb is a very impressive one built of Portland stone and was of an elaborate design. Would an atheist have occupied such an impressive tomb?

Despite these logical suggestions, I do like a good story, and especially one which sounds good. As I have said above, unfortunately, the fig tree is no more but at least postcards like this exist to show what the tree looked like and to remind people it was there.

This is an image of the tomb being renovated – no more Fig Tree

75TH ANNIVERSARIO DELLA RADIO VATICANA

Published by

TIPOGRAFIA VATICANA

75TH ANNIVERSARY OF VATICAN RADIO

This is an interesting Vatican City official postcard which celebrates 75 years of the Vatican Radio. As the Pope is the person who is most heard over this radio system it seems logical that this anniversary should be represented on this postcard with an image of past Popes and the then current Pope.

I have previously stated that religious themed postcards are not highly collected and I rarely see the theme listed in dealer’s stocks at fairs or on lists. But, this one here also has a radio connection which gives it a second theme, and radio is a much-collected topic. As a result, this postcard does have more collectability than most religious themed cards (I am not saying this I how it should be, in respect of religious themed postcards, I am just saying that this is how it is – I do have a religious based collection, but no-one shows much interest in it. This is a shame as the subject does produce some lovely art cards).

ROGER WILLIAMS PARK

DYER MEMORIAL

PROVIDENCE R. I (Rhode Island)

Published by

THE METROPOLITAN NEWS Co (Boston)

Ref: No. 6995

The Roger Williams Park is an impressive landscaped park which is 427 acres large. As the postcard title states, this park is in Providence, on Rhode Island. The park is named after the founder of Providence, Roger Williams, who was also one of the founders of the state of Rhode Island.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

The postal usage of this postcard is a little difficult to fully work out as some of the strikes are not too clear but it looks like the postcard was originally posted on 26th February 1907 and initially received ‘RUTLAND VT’ American flag slogan postmark. I believe the sender failed to apply a postage stamp when it was first posted. So, it received a straight- line purple instruction mark:

HELD FOR POSTAGE

Alongside this was placed a dated mark which was also applied in purple in and which is shown as:

FEB 27, 1907

The postcard was clearly then held for a little while whilst the matter of postage was sorted out. This has clearly been done as the card has a 1903 issued ‘Washington’ 2 cents (imperf across top) postage stamp (SG 326). There is also a second RUTLAND VT cancel, this time a duplex cancel, dated 2nd March 1907 so I assume the stamp was obtained and applied around, or just prior to this date. The postcard then resumed its journey on this date to New Haven where it received yet another cancel, this time a receiving mark for NEW HAVEN dated 2nd March and timed at 07:30PM. All these marks are overlaid across each other across the top of the postcard. Still, it makes for an interesting item in this respect.

FABIAN OF SCOTLAND YARD

FABIAN OF THE YARD”

Autographed on the front by

ROBERT FABIAN

‘Fabian of the Yard’ was a British police television series which was a procedural series based on the real-life story of Scotland Yard detective Robert Fabian. The series was run between November 1954 and February 1956. In all they made 36 episodes, each running for 30 minutes and with the first thirty episodes being run consecutively every Saturday between the 13th November 1954 and 22nd June 1955 (excluding Christmas Day and New Year’s Day). The remaining six episodes were played much later, and spread out intermittingly, between November 1955 and February 1956.

This series is, considered to be, the earliest British made police procedural programme, with the American series ‘Dragnet’ being the world’s first police procedural, although Fabian of the Yard has a number similarities with the American series.

Although called ‘Fabian of the Yard’ in the UK the series was called ‘Fabian of Scotland Yard’ in the US.

This card here has the autograph of Robert (Bob) Fabian on the front. It is a nice, and unusual police themed card.

PARC ASTERIX

SERIE PARC ASTERIX

“ASTERIX ET OBELIX AU VILLAGE”

The ‘ASTERIX PARK’ is in Northern France, and although I have driven past it several times I have never actually visited it. It is a large theme park based on the famous cartoon characters that appear around the main featured character of the Gaul named ‘Asterix’. This postcard here is an official park postcard which features an image of the two main characters being depicted as they appear around the park. This particular copy, of the postcard, was posted in 1995, see below.

REVERSE SIDE OF ABOVE POSTCARD

I collect Asterix postcards as part of my television collection, mainly because of all the animated cartoon versions which have appeared on the box. So, I would probably have picked this one up for the front image alone, but, there was a smashing little extra which can be seen here. This is the parc’s (parks) official red pre-paid slogan meter-mark. This also features an image of Asterix and because of the way this card was written, it also received a nice, clear applied print of the meter mark. The meter mark is dated 27th July 1995, so we also have a nice piece of dating material as well which shows that this postcard is at least 20 years old now.

Published by

THE ROYAL NATIONAL THEATRE

LYTTELTON THEATRE 2001

Ref: NT131

For me of course this postcard fits nicely into my Television collection as Martine McCutcheon played the character Tiffany Mitchell (also Raymond) in the BBC 1 award winning soap opera ‘Eastenders’. The character was in the series between 1995 and 1998. Here, on this postcard, she appears as Eliza Doolittle in the character from the musical play, based on the film, ‘My Fair Lady’, which is of course itself based on the book ‘Pygmalion’, by Bernard Shaw (I remember doing this book in ‘English’ classes at school).

This card here was not one of those but was one I obtained later (If I come across my little bundle of signed bits and pieces I will put some of them on the webpage).
